An imperial russian medal bar comprised of a 4th class order of st. George in enameled gold with st. Petersburg hallmark, a 3rd class order of st. Anne in enameled gold stamped with a cyrillic hallmark, and a russo-japanese war medal in dark bronze inscribed with cyrillic caption on the reverse. All are mounted together on an imperial period bar with folding clasp pin. Light oxidation to the reverse of the bar, else very fine.

Scarce imperial german colonial officers sword made by e. & f. Horster solingen. The straight double fullered plain blade is 1891 dated and double proof marked. Its worn gilded brass hand guard depicts the imperial prussian eagle as only used on such swords. The black fish skin grip still retains all grip wire and is set with a metal monogram depicting a crowned wr ii which stands for wilhelm rex the second. The scabbard is russet steel with some lightly scattered rust in places and is missing its scabbard throat fitting.

In comradely rememberance july 31, 1932 g. Welker sturmbannfuehrer this is the translation of the dedication found engraved upon the 800 silver marked plaque (small brad is missing from the l corner) applied to this early m33 sa dagger made by the firm of anton wingen solingen. This exceptional, and researchable dagger is mounted with early, uncleaned, nickel silver fittings and sheathed in its original anodized, very lightly scarred scabbard complete with hanger. Blade has only a couple of very light age speckles here and there that are so slight that they are mentioned purely for accuracies sake as seen in the photographs. Other than this the blade striations, sa motto, and makers mark, remain crisp, clean, and strongly visible. Also of note and as seen, here is a tiny brad missing in one corner of the dedication plaque but remains securely affixed. This is truly a one of a kind early, custom ordered, imperial japanese navy kai-gunto. Given the overall quality of the custom made swords same'gawa scabbard and the use of the very early alternating sun burst ray dai seppa for the tsuba it can almost be assured that the owner of this sword was of high rank and probably very wealthy. The nearly spotless blade has only a very minor, light area of darkening along the edge of the monouchi near its tip which is noted for accuracies sake. The tang is signed but not dated. This is an early imperial japanese army type 98 shingunto with a pierced tsuba that is signed and papered by the nthk. This old samurai blade dates to the kan-bun period (1661 to 1672). It is signed "higo no kami fujiwara hirotaka". The blade has no fatal flaws and all activity such as the surface grain pattern and tempering remain clearly visible. Hirotaka was an echizen province smith and this sword was given a relatively high 70 point rating. This is a desirable sword made by a sought after smith that has survived many wars, battles, and conflicts. Full length 40 inches blade length 27. 5 inches

The tachi mounts are completely comprised of brass plates embossed with the tokugawa era aoi mon. The sword is also accompanied with a quality shirasaya covered in sayagaki and recent nbthk papers. Seldom Encountered Wedge Shaped Armor Piercing Tanto With Nbthk Papers

Signed and peppered example of a most unusual shape and form of an armor piercing tanto. These thick, heavy, and uniquely wedge shaped blades are rarely encountered, especially signed. So unique in design the true name of this style shape is unknown. Having a cutting edge of 6 1/2" and a thickness of 1/2" at its widest point then tapers down a full 4"'s to it's very pointed tip. One can see what a formidable weapon this would be against padded cloth, leather, or steel plate and mail. This blade is in very good old original polish with an easily seen grain pattern and very defined temper. The temper of this blade is straight along the top to the tip, extending rearwards to the last 2 1/2 inches where it turns into 5 highly defined ridge which then disappear beneath its upper habaki. Unlike a few of the known examples of this type blade this one is signed kanechika and is complete papers attesting to its originality by japanese nihon bijutsu token hozon kyokai, aka the nbthk. Officially papered and in nearly mint condition this model 1886 imperial japanese army officers kyu-gunto has been attributed to the famous early muromachi period (1394/1428) swordsmith of kaga province iyetsugu. It rarely gets better than this folks! Here we have an incredible sword with everything already done for you. Absolutely nothing more is needed except to display it in your own tokonoma room. Mounted in pristine kyu-gunto mounts and perfectly polished, the sword comes complete with a high quality shirasaya completed with sayagaki. This had to have been a bitter pill for the japanese officer to surrender. The blade is in perfect polish, is ubu, has a long tip and gorgeous bohi that begins just above the silver foil habaki and tapers down to a point towards the tip. This ensemble will not disappoint, we're sure of it. Full length 36. 5 inches blade length 25 inches

Presented here is a very unusual old, interesting, and signed, japanese samurai sword mounted in imperial japanese army kyu gunto mounts with a field capture or surrender inscription engraved in cyrillic russian and dated december 7th 1904. With this date and a translation the sword should be fully researchable as to the battle in which it was taken and those involved. While the blade itself is clean and free of any real damage the scabbard is covered in a light surface rust needing a proper cleaning/restoration along with a light oiling which would benefit it greatly. The sword release button does still function. The blade fits the scabbard well which has probably been what helped preserve it. Included with the sword is a length of it hanger strapping. On offer is this grouping consisting of a scarce japanese 1899 pattern government official of formosa (taiwan) sword, the officials personal photo album, and assorted smoking implements. 1899 pattern formosa officials swords are very similar in appearance to imperial japanese navy parade sabers except for the diamond shaped lozenge attached to the handle back strap located mid section on both sides of the grip. This example has a graying blade with some dark spotting and fullers running the length of the blade. Still attached to this sword is it's original but heavily frayed sword knot. Although machine made this blade incorporates a habaki unlike some others. Included with this offering is the japanese officials personal photo album containing numerous black and white photographs along with a chinese style water pipe, a tobacco pipe along with its detached mouthpiece, and what appears to be a pipe pickling with one other unknown item. This is an unusually made and shaped wwii hand forged sword mounted in civilian mounts with army style menuki, dark green handle wrap, plain copper fittings, and a leather covered wood combat scabbard. This was most likely carried by a civilian working for the imperial japanese army that was required to carry a sword. The blade of this sword appears to be made by a novice swordsmith. It has some minor flaws here and there, none of which are fatal, and appears to be made using the sanmai or three layer technique. It is wide between cutting edge and spine and somewhat short. It is unsigned but adorned with horimono carving depicting a fern leaf and bud. The temper line is the shape of undulating waves. This is an interesting study piece. This highly unusual ken style double edged tanto of sankaku shape with a secondary side folding single edge blade located in its handle. While in deccut condition for it's age both blades are out of polish and age toned to gray with the folding blade showing deep brown age patina along its spine. The black lacquered koshirae is exaggerated in length with both handle and scabbard fitting made of russet iron. The guard is made of black horn. The scabbard is fit with utility knife type pockets on both sides which are wider in size than normal, and thought to have contained other specialty type items for use with whatever this unusual item was used or intended for. Edo period wakizashi in good original polish with easily seen surface grain and edge tempering this nicely preserved example retains its original silk bound handle wrapping and is mounted with both soft mixed metal as well as iron fittings. Of special note is that the habaki is made using silver foil. The black lacquer scabbard has a pocket for a kozuka side knife which is missing. Attached to the scabbard is an original silk sageo cord used to secure it to the obi/belt. Condition is good with no fatal flaws. Full length 18. 5 inches. Blade length 12 inches.

This pair of engraved smith & wesson revolvers were the personal property of well known whaling captain albert c. Sherman. He was a whaler originally based out of new bedford mass. He was born in westport mass. In 1849, first employed on whalers around 1870 and listed as "master" in 1884. We have a list of at least eight whaling ships that he captained beginning in the 1870's. His first two ships were the "hale" and the "george & mary" whose log book rests at the westport maritime museum in mass. Then there was the "hunter" 1882-83 with log book in new bedford, the "john carver" 1884-1885, the "beluga"- 1892, the "orca" steamer- 1893 with log book at mystic museum and the "beluga" steamer -1896. He captained the "orca" in 1897 when it was trapped in ice and destroyed, of which much is written. He piloted the "thrasher" a steamer that set sail from san francisco from 1897-1899 and retired back to new bedford around 1900. His exploits took him around the world through the bering straits, both poles and the arctic where he spent nearly half of his career. His second wife carolyn was with him and died in the arctic. His son "bertie jr" was with him on the beluga" bertie was the father of elizabeth ladner who wrote a several page handwritten letter on her husbands stationary where she details her grandfathers exploits and ownership of these two smith & wesson revolvers and how she inherited them upon her fathers death. There are copies of two photographs, one of the "beluga" whaler where a birthday party was held at herschel island for 5 year old bertie(albert moved his family to san francisco in 1894-95) along with a picture of bertie and albert around the same time. There is a smith & wesson letter dated may 3, 2002 to mr. Ladner stating the s&w . 44 double action first model serial 24521 was sold october 1891 and the . 38 safety hammerless 3rd model serial 63615 sold in november the same year. This is just an information letter and does not detail the guns as to finish, barrels, etc. This lot also includes a sea bag made from sailcloth that is stenciled "mrs a.C. Sherman new bedford mass". She was alfred's third wife. We surmise that her address is printed in case of albert's death. As to the revolvers, both exhibit nearly full coverage banknote scroll engraving that appears to be of the same style and shop as found on page 60 of the standard catalog of smith & wesson. The . 44 sports a 6" barrel, nickel plated, case color hammer & trigger, blue trigger guard and sporting pearl grips. (also comes with a period flap holster stamped . 44, s&w & 6" on back in excellent condition but does have some loose stitching 4" up from tip) the . 38 appears to be nearly identical in engraving pattern and sporting pearl grips with a gold wash cylinder as well. Condition: both function correctly with strong bores that show some abrasion. Both have wonderful grips, at least 90% nickel finish, crisp engraving, strong case colors and blue with 90% gold wash intact on small revolver. A once in a lifetime collection that will appeal to both admirers of high grade and condition engraved smith & wesson's as well as whaling historians & collectors. This m1850 staff and field officer sword comes beautifully etched and frosted with an ornately adorned scabbard. Etched with the miller and company of new york markers markings on the ricasso, the rest of the 32†blade shows no signs of use or damage and retains most of its original bright finish. A light gray patina has started to form near the hiltand tip and offers a nice character that showcases the sword’s age. The edge is fine with no marks or rolls. The intricate etchings on the blade include war trophies, cannon, floral spray, unfurled us flags, a proud federal eagle with shield, and a beautiful “us†separated by a patriotic shield. The overall length of the sword is approximately 38†without the scabbard. The handguard, hilt, and pommel are beautifully gilded, and show signs of minimal but typical wear from handling and use. The fish skin grips show some signs of drying but remain strongly affixed to the handle while the gilt wire wrapping is in excellent condition. The knurled quillon is intricately engraved and compliments the pierced handguard perfectly. The scabbard is in great structural condition with a strong and completely intact center stitch. The leather retains its rich black finish and shows no indications of creasing or cracking. The throat, middle band, and tip are engraved in detail with geometric and floral patterns with the tip showcasing two deep federal shields. Throat band is adorned with a beautiful “us†and a blank shield silhouette. Full length 39 inches. Blade length 32 inches.

Star To The Grand Cross Of The Iron Cross 1939

The star to the grand cross 1939 is the rarest award of nazi germany. Unlike all other awards of the third reich no mention of it's reinstitution date exists and it was never awarded yet two authentic prototypes were discovered by the u.S. Army in 1945 at the official nazi government depository for the storage of awards in schloss klessheim castle located in austria. One of the two known awards is on display in the museum at west point, new york. One example uses a godet/c.F. Zimmermann iron cross while the other uses a schinkel design. Both examples have differing starburst designs and reverse hardware. Given this information there are never the less a number of very well made and decades old vintage examples of the 1939 star that only rarely surface on the collectors market. Their exact histories are unknown but observed examples are all made of high quality materials and exhibit the craftsmanship that one would expect to see with such period made high awards. As with this one each of the known examples include the use of original 1939 convex iron crosses of the 1st class type made with frames by the firm of wachtler & lange and the iron cores of c.E. Juncker. War time l12 marked examples of screw back 1st class iron crosses made in collaboration with these two firms are well documented highly sought after and of the exact type as found here. The starburst of this and other observed examples are made from a heavy and quality gold plated fine zinc. Hinge, pin, and catch are neatly and expertly applied. The iron cross is affixed to the starburst with the use of a small diameter screw held firmly in place with a small disc which when seated was then perfectly peened over flush with the disc. Overall condition of this rarely encountered example is very good. When facing the award a small but tight and stable crack can be seen in the lower left leg of the starburst otherwise there is no other damage. This light damage is not overly distracting and will continue to display well for many years to come.
