Fine English Cased Set of Brass Barrel Flintlock Pistols by Probin

Lot #1 (Sale Order 1 of 332)

Fine antique cased set of silver mounted brass barrel flintlock pistols. Barrel is a .577 caliber running from octagonal to round with two crossed scepter proofs at breeches. Locks are elegantly engraved and marked "PROBIN". Very Fine Silver furniture made by Charles Freeth (Hallmarked "C F") and the Hallmark date letter "P" (1790). Butt caps and trigger guards with full sets of Hallmarks. Each pistol has fine silver wire inlay around the barrel tangs (100% intact) and silver side plates, one engraved "Angel" and the other "Tookie" which were probably the names the owner bestowed on these pistols. Cased in a 1709 in John Manton box which includes three way powder flask, pewter oil bottle, turn screw, vent pick, bullet mold, patches/wads, balls and ram-rod with cleaning jag/ball puller. Case with brass lid escutcheon is engraved "R Cranford, Esqre". Size case 18" L x 9" W x 2 3/4" H, pistol 13 1/2" L, barrel 8" L.. Condition: Wood loss at end of one barrel as pictured, small dent on pommel of one.

German Suit of Armour w/ Closed Helm

German full suit of plate armour with smooth German close helm. Skull one piece of hammered steel with a high comb. Visor with horizontal pierced mouth and eye slits. Heavy roped border to the lower section of the helm. Gorget with matching roping and hinged for opening. Matching arm defenses with right pauldron featuring a cut away section for the movement of the lance rest. Bulbous belly breastplate and gusset plates with large roped borders. Two piece Fauld with buckles attaching tassets all in matching roping. Chainmail section to the waist. Both leg defenses complete with matching decoration and components. Each sabaton well constructed and articulating with a vertical roped medial embossed section. Old wood base in oak. Exceptionally well made suit of armour. Overall Size 18" L x 18" W x 68" H, 20" Shoulder 14" Chest 28" Sleeve 30" Jacket Length. Condition: Hand hammered from the reverse and suit overall with a heavy gauge steel.. Rare 19th/20th century Mindanao highlands, Philippine Bagobo peoples hand made wooden shield. Impressive shields main body is one solid piece of wood with an added ledge piece at the top. Four sections of wood affixed to the face and reverse with rattan at the mid-section. Stained in natural pigments from fruits compounded and ground into a paint, red and black pigments in this case. Decorated to the exterior with animal hair tassels. Central raised circular section making space for the handle on verso which is worn and patinated from use. Size 37 1/2" H x 14" W. Condition: Good overall condition with loss to hair, minor surface scratches and wear. Tape residue to reverse upper right corner.

North America, Eastern Woodlands or Northeastern Woodlands probably Shawnee tribe circa 1760-1800s. Rare and early example of a well preserved Native American ball head war club. Exceptional form with a tapered shaft to a heavy ball head and featuring a carved effigy snake head pommel or handle. Cross hatched patterns stripped to the shaft base above the handle which is recessed slightly for grip. The remainder decorated in a three leaf (tobacco leaf) pattern to shaft. Sides of the ricasso carved with flat serration. Blade a straight single edge with a double edge forward section and rope engraved top section. Classic sail guard with turned edged and straight quillion, composed to blade with later grip and hand peened over in the 19th century. Size 20" L, blade 13" L. The profile of an emperor above surrounded by scrolling and foliate motifs. Reverse and additional depiction of the coat of arms with the double headed eagle and a deeply groove armourer mark of a split tail cross. Polearm head a double sided wide blade that tapers significantly before a set of opposing curved spikes at either side. Mounted on a shaft with steel straps at either side. 19th century Majapahit kris dagger from Java with a later 20th century decorated wood scabbard with metal casing and later red wrapped ribbon. Dagger itself comprised of a single hammered and shaped piece of Damascus steel with a Bulul like figure pommel. Size blade 8" L, size overall 10" L, weight 135g. Condition: Some areas of wear commensurate with age and use, scabbard with minor losses to the metal casing.

Indian Chilanum Dagger, 17th/18th C.

17th/18th century Indian Chilanum dagger with a recurved blade. Pair of fullers to the lower half of the blade converging at the forte which is decorated with silver koftgari flowers and foliage. Iron hilt extending to a pair of arms enclosing the forte. Grip with central bulbous sections for grip and extends to a large khanjarli pommel. Later added darkened wooden plates mounted to the khanjarli pommel affixed with three floral rivets. Size 15" L, blade 10" L. Condition: Some loss to forte silvering, later replaced wooden pommel.

Indian scissor Katar punch dagger carved with various engraving to the handle and blade. Squeezing the two handles together causes the outer blade to separate, revealing a second internal blade underneath as shown. Size 15 1/2" L, Blade 7 1/2" L.. Good U.S. Military model 1836 flintlock service pistol by R. Johnson, 1843 which was converted to percussion for the American Civil War (1860-1865). Round .54 caliber barrel is 8.5" L and stamped at the breech with inspector's mark (JH) over (P) with a brass blade front sight. The lock is stamped with (US) over (R. Johnson) over (Middn Conn) over (1843). Captive steel ramrod. Stock has remnants of (2) inspector's cartouche's stamped on the left side of the stock at the rear of the side plate, and the number (82). The stock is solid with scratches and dings from years of service. All steel parts have light areas of salt & pepper pitting which was cleaned and coated with a thin layer of old protective clear varnish. Deep olive brown glaze throughout with faded light brown around the exaggerated rim. Five monkey face lug handles protruding from the shoulder, with rippling ribbon banding beneath. Lovely iridescence to the glaze from age. Museum sticker to shoulder indicates the piece was certified at one point by the National Philippines Museum. Size 19 1/2" H x 13" W. Beautiful heavily detailed cinnabar Chinese snuff bottle with custom wood stand. Red background with white, cream, green and orange accent paint throughout. Stopper with spoon still attached. Alabaster "A Noble Chief" Navajo Sculpture by Gregory Johnson 1986

Large and beautiful prize winning Navajo sculpture by Gregory Johnson. This exact sculpture won the second prize red ribbon in 1986 Gallup Ceremonial. Carved with the corner featuring details to the chief and reverse with a soaring eagle in the feather headdress. Carved from a rainbow colored alabaster stone with hues of green to pink and red. Signed on the reverse to the lower right side. Size 26" H x 8 1/2" W x 5" L Gregory Johnson dominated the early years of alabaster sculpture by Navajo artists, taking Gallup ribbons in the late 1980's. This example, "A Noble Chief", is holding a peace pipe, and masterfully carved.. Condition: very good condition with no signs of breaks, chips, or wear.

Lovely Zuni handmade crushed turquoise fetish pot with a wide bulbous shaped body, narrow opening at the neck with a slightly rounded base. Covered all over in find crushed pieces of turquoise. Attributed to the late Teddy Weahkee 1890-1965 this is a more delicate and minimal fetish pot from other examples sold. Size 9" W. Condition: Perfect and well preserved condition.

Filipino Moro silver inlayed brass betel nut box from Mindanao island in the Philippines. The handcrafted box has intricately detailed panels of silver inlay to the outside as well as cover flaps. Piece still retains two handles to the sides. These boxes were used to store areca nut (betel nut) which was wrapped in a betel leaf with lime paste for chewing. Size 5 7/8" W x 3" H.
