Edward Albert Prince of Wales CDV Photo Lot #5 (Sale Order 5 of 1029) Unknown Photographer. Edward VII was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 22 January 1901 until his death in 1910. The second child and eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Edward, was related to royalty throughout Europe. He was Prince of Wales and heir apparent to the British throne for almost 60 years. He married Princess Alexandra of Denmark in 1863, and the couple had six children. As Prince of Wales, Edward travelled throughout Britain performing ceremonial public duties and represented Britain on visits abroad. His tours of North America in 1860 and of the Indian subcontinent in 1875 proved popular successes. Despite the approval of the public, his reputation as a playboy prince soured his relationship with his mother. Edward inherited the throne upon his mother's death in 1901. He played a role in the modernisation of the British Home Fleet and the reorganisation of the British Army after the Second Boer War of 1899–1902. He re-instituted traditional ceremonies as public displays and broadened the range of people with whom royalty socialised. He fostered good relations between Britain and other European countries, especially France, for which he was popularly called "Peacemaker". The Edwardian era, which covered Edward's reign and was named after him, coincided with the start of a new century and heralded significant changes in technology and society, including steam turbine propulsion and the rise of socialism. Edward died in 1910 in the midst of a constitutional crisis that was resolved the following year by the Parliament Act 1911, which restricted the power of the unelected House of Lords. Edward was succeeded by his only surviving son, George V.

Prince Joseph Charles Napoleon CDV Photo Lot #7 (Sale Order 7 of 1029) Published by E. Anthony. From Brady's National Portrait Gallery. Prince Napoléon Joseph Charles Paul Bonaparte, usually called Napoléon-Jérôme Bonaparte or Jérôme Bonaparte, was the second son of Jérôme, King of Westphalia, youngest brother of Napoleon I, and his second wife Catharina of Württemberg. Following the death of his cousin Louis-Napoléon, Prince Imperial in 1879, he claimed headship of the House of Bonaparte until his death in 1891. An outspoken liberal however, he was passed over as heir in his cousin's final will, which instead chose his elder son Victor, who was favored by most Bonapartists. From the 1880s onwards, he was one of the stronger supporters of General Georges Boulanger, together with other monarchist forces. As well as bearing the title of Prince Napoléon, given to him by his cousin Emperor Napoleon III in 1852, he was also 2nd Prince of Montfort, 1st Count of Meudon and Count of Moncalieri, following his marriage with Maria Clotilde of Savoy in 1859. His popular nickname, Plon-Plon, stemmed from his difficulty in pronouncing his own name while still a child, although other notable historians and contemporary letters by his nephew Colonel Jérôme Bonaparte claim it was because he ran in cowardice during battle when the bombs fell. Another nickname, "Craint-Plomb" ("Afraid-of-Lead",) was given to him by the army due to his absence from the Battle of Solferino.

Queen Alexandra of Denmark CDV Photo Lot #12 (Sale Order 12 of 1029) Unknown Photographer. Alexandra of Denmark ( December 1844 – 20 November 1925) was Queen of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Empress of India, from January of 1901 to May of 1910 as the wife of Edward VII. Alexandra's family had been relatively obscure until 1852, when her father, Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, was chosen with the consent of the major European powers to succeed his second cousin Frederick VII as King of Denmark. At the age of sixteen, Alexandra was chosen as the future wife of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, the son and heir apparent of Queen Victoria. The couple married eighteen months later in 1863, the year in which her father became king of Denmark as Christian IX and her brother William was appointed king of Greece as George I. Alexandra was Princess of Wales from 1863 to 1901, the longest anyone has ever held that title, and became generally popular; her style of dress and bearing were copied by fashion-conscious women. Largely excluded from wielding any political power, she unsuccessfully attempted to sway the opinion of British ministers and her husband's family to favour Greek and Danish interests. Her public duties were restricted to uncontroversial involvement in charitable work. On the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, Albert Edward became King-Emperor as Edward VII, with Alexandra as queen-empress. She became queen mother on Edward VII's death in 1910, at which point their son George V acceded to the throne. Alexandra died aged 80 in 1925.

General Nathaniel P. Banks Civil War CDV Photo Lot #18 (Sale Order 18 of 1029) Published by E. Anthony of Brady's National Portrait Gallery. Nathaniel Prentice Banks (January1816 – September 1894) was an American politician from Massachusetts and a Union general during the Civil War. Initially a member of the Democratic Party, Banks's abolitionist views drew him to the nascent Republican Party, through which he won election to the United States House of Representatives and as Governor of Massachusetts in the 1850s. At the start of the 34th Congress, he was elected Speaker of the House in an election that spanned a record 133 ballots taken over the course of two months. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln appointed Banks as one of the first political major generals, over the heads of West Point regulars, who initially resented him, but came to acknowledge his influence on the administration of the war. After suffering a series of inglorious setbacks in the Shenandoah River Valley at the hands of Stonewall Jackson, Banks replaced Benjamin Butler at New Orleans as commander of the Department of the Gulf, charged with the administration of Louisiana and gaining control of the Mississippi River. He failed to reinforce Grant at Vicksburg, and badly handled the Siege of Port Hudson, taking its surrender only after Vicksburg had fallen. He then launched the Red River Campaign, a failed attempt to occupy northern Louisiana and eastern Texas that prompted his recall. Banks was regularly criticized for the failures of his campaigns, notably in tactically important tasks, including reconnaissance. Banks was also instrumental in early reconstruction efforts in Louisiana, intended by Lincoln as a model for later such activities. After the war, Banks returned to the Massachusetts political scene, serving in Congress, where he supported Manifest Destiny, influenced the Alaska Purchase legislation, and supported women's suffrage. In his later years, he adopted more liberal progressive causes, and served as a United States marshal for Massachusetts before suffering a decline in his mental faculties.

Scott was the Whig Party's presidential nominee in the 1852 election but was defeated by Democrat Franklin Pierce. He was known as "Old Fuss and Feathers" for his insistence on proper military etiquette and the "Grand Old Man of the Army" for his many years of service. In contrast to the Salish, Kootenai, and Pend'Oreille photographs, Boos' Flathead, Mission, and Missoula valleys series is a mix of broad landscape images, community events, and portraits. This series primarily contains photographs of the Flathead and Missoula valleys; however, it also includes a few photographs from the Mission valley as well as one from near Frenchtown, MT, looking east towards Missoula. The landscape photographs in this series offer a significant record of topography and general vegetative matrices during the early stages of community expansion into the foothills of the Missoula and Flathead valleys. The series also records some common leisure activities among western Montanans at the turn of the 20th Century, as well as glimpses of Missoula community events. The Victoria, B.C. series contains photographs from an undated vacation.

Powder River Jack Signed Photo Lot #106 (Sale Order 106 of 1029) Photo by Crandall Grand Teton National Park. 8" by 10" Born Jackson Martin on the first of October, 1874, Jack H. Lee was counted among the eldest of the more authentic tradition of cowboy singers to cut records in the days before Hollywood Autry's and Roger's took center stage (though the extent of that authenticity has been called into question). Purportedly after joining Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show around 1893, Jack met his future wife Kitty Miller, a native Illinoisan six years his senior, and the two began a long career singing genuine cowboy songs on vaudeville and in rodeos. Claiming to hail from Montana, they dubbed themselves Powder River Jack and Pretty Kitty Lee and were performing together at least as early as 1898. Ultimately, the duo became one of the most popular early cowboy acts, though their recorded legacy leaves little evidence of that success. The Lees were recorded for the first time in November of 1930, with a session for the RCA Victor Company in Hollywood. The date produced four titles, all of which were released to limited success as the nation plunged into the Great Depression. They returned to the studio six years later, waxing two sides for Decca in Chicago, which have never been released. An additional three recordings were made of Jack performing at the National Folk Festival in Washington, D.C., in May of 1938. Powder River Jack also published several books of cowboy lore and song folios during the 1930s which demonstrated his penchant for misappropriating authorship of traditional cowboy poetry (even going so far as to claim "Red River Valley" as his own). Jack Lee died in a car accident on February 24, 1946, in Chandler, Arizona; he was survived for nine years by Kitty, and both are interred side-by-side in the City Cemetery in Mesa, Arizona. Because of Jack’s tendency to plagiarize, the duo’s merit as cowboy performers has been challenged. While indeed neither Jack nor Kitty were likely ever working cowhands and much of their backstory was probably fabricated, they did perform and preserve genuine western folk music—even if they wrongfully attributed its origins—and, with that caveat, are no less deserving of recognition than their contemporary early cowboy recording artists.

Anaconda Bluewater Uranium Mill Photo New Mexico Lot #114 (Sale Order 114 of 1029) 26" by 32" framed. The Bluewater mill was originally constructed by the Anaconda Copper Company as a carbonate-leach mill in 1953 to process uranium ore that was mined nearby. In 1957, an acid-leach mill was constructed to process sandstone uranium ore from the Jackpile-Paguate mine, north of Laguna Pueblo. The carbonate-leach mill closed, and the acid-leach mill reduced production due to economic conditions in 1959, but the acid-leach mill resumed full operations again in 1967. As of 1978, the acid-leach mill’s capacity increased to 6,000 tons of ore per day. In 1977, the Anaconda Copper Company became a subsidiary of the Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO). The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Legacy Management (DOE-LM) currently manages the site under Title II of the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act of 1978 (UMTRCA). Title II of UMTRCA authorized the regulation of commercial uranium mills operating on or after 1978.
