Raised in a creative New York household, Cadmus trained at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. His breakthrough came with The Fleet’s In! (1934), a provocative painting that scandalized the U.S. Navy and cemented his reputation as a fearless artist. Throughout his career, Cadmus explored queer identity, masculinity, and morality, often using his lovers and friends—especially longtime partner Jon Anderson—as muses.
