Retains Original Chain with Ring and Pin. Circa 1850s to 1880s, probably French.6.5” Long. Additonal info: During the nineteenth century the wearing of flowers was considered more suitable for young women than jewelry."
Victorians studied the language of flowers with passion. The "tussiemussie"
reached great popularity as a means for lovers to convey
secret messages of sentiment and affection in a prim Victorian society
during the Romantic Era. A nosegay, posey (or posy), flower bouquet or tussie-mussie is a small bunch of flowers, typically given as a gift. It is used as a sort of a vase. When a courter would give one to his sweetheart, in order to show her acceptance of him, she skewered the
flowers into the posy holder with a long pin and wore the holder to a ball. Attached to her hand by a chain and a ring, it swung free while
they danced. Tussie Mussies rose to popularity during the reign of Queen Victoria, from 1837 onwards, at which time the tussie-mussie became a popular fashion accessory. Typically, tussie-mussies include floral symbolism from the Language of flowers, and therefore may be used to send a message to the recipient. They were not only used by lovers. Since each flower had a different meaning, they were also worn by men and woman as a token of friendship. Proper Victorian
ladies showed up at fashionable social gatherings carrying their "tussie-mussies" and could have been subjected to criticism on their bouquet style.
Auction Estimate: $1000-2000.
