Measuring 10 1/2 inches high by 15 1/2 inches wide, the scene is part of Koitsu's "Views of Tokyo (Tokyo fukei)" series, initially published in 1933. The print depicts the iconic Benkei Bridge at night, spanning the outer moat of Edo Castle in Tokyo, with cherry blossoms and illuminated lanterns enhancing the tranquil atmosphere. The bridge, named after the legendary monk-warrior Benkei, was relocated to its current site in 1889. Tsuchiya Koitsu, a celebrated artist of the Shin-hanga movement, was known for his evocative portrayals of landscapes and traditional Japanese scenes, utilizing light and shadow to great effect. Japanese Woodblock Print by Tsuchiya Koitsu titled Nijo Castle Kyoto, first produced in 1933. This post-war impression depicts a serene nighttime view of Nijo Castle, including its watchtower and moat, with moonlight reflecting on the water and illuminating the clouds. Dimensions measure 7 1/2 inches high by 15 1/2 inches wide including the mount. Reverse shows tape stains visible in the front margins. Nijo Castle, located in Kyoto, Japan, was built in 1603 as a residence for the Tokugawa shoguns, featuring two fortified rings of walls and moats. Artist Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870-1949) is renowned for his mastery of shin-hanga woodblock prints, blending traditional Japanese aesthetics with Western-style realism. Koitsu initially trained under Kobayashi Kiyochika and later became a noted contributor to the modern woodblock print movement, particularly celebrated for his evocative landscapes and cityscapes.. .
