Mixed-Media Painting on Board - Political Expressionism Mixed-Media Painting on Board - Political Expressionism

Mixed-Media Painting on Board - Political Expressionism

Lot #30 (Sale Order 30 of 78)

Mixed-media painting on board depicting Senator Joseph McCarthy; architect of 1950s McCarthyism and American political witch hunts. Rendered expressionistically in acrylic; ink; and marker with vibrant yellows; blues; reds; and whites. Figure emerges through semi-transparent paint passages; present yet elusive; visible yet fragmented.

Title Undocument and reference to R.E.M.s 1987 album Document (R.E.M. No. 5) create deliberate conceptual dialogue with the bands song Exhuming McCarthy. By depicting McCarthy himself; the artist excavates the genealogy of authoritarian control across American history.

McCarthy pioneered modern American political persecution: accusations without evidence; loyalty oaths; character assassination; forced confessions; professional destruction. His tactics created methodology deployed across subsequent decades. Reagan-era neo-conservatism revived McCarthyite persecution against Central American leftists and immigrants. Contemporary immigration enforcement continues this lineage: border militarization; ICE raids; DACA legal challenges; and anti-immigrant rhetoric represent McCarthyisms persistent ghost.

McCarthys legacy did not end with his 1954 censure or 1957 death. His methods were resurrected; refined; and deployed across subsequent American history. The undocumented immigrant occupies same persecuted position as McCarthys accused communist: invisible; criminalized; stripped of rights despite physical presence in nation.

By depicting McCarthy as undocumented - visible yet fragmented through expressionistic layering - artist creates paradox: McCarthy becomes what his victims were; present yet erased. Work positions McCarthy not as settled historical figure but as ongoing threat; his methods continuously recycled against persecuted populations.

INTENTIONALLY UNSIGNED: The artist deliberately chose not to sign this work as a conceptual statement about undocumentation; invisibility; and erasure. The unsigned status reinforces the works central philosophical argument. This is sophisticated artistic intention; not accident or loss of attribution. The form perfectly aligns with the content; demonstrating conceptual rigor characteristic of contemporary political art practice.

For collectors and institutions; this work offers fusion of historical genealogy; conceptual rigor; and immediate political urgency with profound relevance to 2024-2026 immigration policy debates; DACA challenges; and ICE enforcement escalation.

Artist: Unknown; deliberately unsigned.

CONDITION: Good. Very good condition with few signs of use. Frame is structurally sound.

DIMENSIONS: 24 x 20 in.

PROVENANCE: Private collection; Atlanta; Georgia.

Joan Miro Danseuse Creole Carborundum Etching 1978 Ed. 13/50 Joan Miro Danseuse Creole Carborundum Etching 1978 Ed. 13/50

Joan Miro Danseuse Creole Carborundum Etching 1978 Ed. 13/50

Lot #35 (Sale Order 35 of 78)

Joan Miro (Barcelona; 1893 - Palma de Mallorca; 1983). Danseuse creole (Creole Dancer); 1978. Carborundum etching and aquatint in colors on Arches paper. From the signed and numbered edition of 50 (this impression 13/50). Published by Maeght Editeur; Paris. This monumental work features a dancing figure drawn in brilliant red and outlined with bold black lines that seem to explode outward to create an exhilarating sense of movement and energy. Lively splatters of red flash from the head and spill over the edge of the pictorial plane. Black swirls around the eyes create a focus of intensity within the frenetic movement. Hints of green and yellow illuminate the lower portion; while a handprint motif on the left arm contrasts sharply with other elements; creating a dynamic between reality and abstraction. Inscribed Miro in pencil lower right; numbered 13/50 in pencil lower left. A sibling to Mambo (Dupin 1002); both created in 1978 as part of Miro's late-career exploration of the carborundum technique. Miro's large-scale carborundum etchings from this period are considered among the most important of his graphic artworks and are highly prized by collectors.

CONDITION: Good condition overall. Soft creases visible in raking light. Minor paper losses to margins; away from image. Colors remain vibrant with the distinctive raised texture characteristic of carborundum printing. Framed; not examined out of frame.

DIMENSIONS: Sheet: approximately 54 x 38 in. (137.2 x 96.5 cm); Frame: 63 x 43 in. (160 x 109.2 cm)

The composition features a woman in a white blouse on the left and a woman in a vibrant red garment on the right; both rendered with strong tonal modeling against a landscape background featuring a white building. Lot #37 (Sale Order 37 of 78)

Seated Nude (Circa 2001). Oil on canvas; signed and unframed. Oil on canvas board depicting a seated female figure viewed from behind. Executed in the tonalist-impressionist style characteristic of the Studio Incamminati tradition; the composition features rich impasto brushwork with warm peachy-orange flesh tones set against a vibrant turquoise-green background. Lot #38 (Sale Order 38 of 78)

Love Birds. Oil on canvas; signed and original frame. Oil on canvas titled Love Birds; depicting a classical still life arrangement featuring a decorative blue-gray pitcher adorned with pink and red bird motifs; a white and red patterned box; and red cherries arranged on draped fabric. Set against a rich; warm dark background with dramatic chiaroscuro lighting; the work demonstrates Halls command of color relationships and form. The painting showcases her training in the color theory lineage from Monet through Hensche; Hawthorne; and Chase to Nelson Shanks. Her training at Studio Incamminati under Nelson Shanks and the Art Students League in Manhattan developed the strong foundation for her art. The work exhibits confident brushwork with particular attention to the reflective surfaces of the ceramic pitcher and the luminous quality of the fruit. The warm golden-brown drapery provides tonal contrast to the cooler blues and crisp whites of the objects. Presented in a substantial gilt wood frame. Exhibited at the Atlanta Artists Center and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta.

CONDITION: The painting is in very good condition. The oil paint surface is clean and stable with no visible cracking, flaking, or paint loss. Brushwork is crisp and colors remain vibrant throughout. Lot #39 (Sale Order 39 of 78)

Ballerina (2001). Oil on canvas; signed and original frame. Oil on canvas depicting a young ballerina in profile; standing en pointe in a classical pose. The dancer wears a vibrant cobalt blue tutu and bodice; rendered with confident brushwork that captures the delicate texture and volume of the tulle skirt. Set against a dramatic red curtain or backdrop with cool gray architectural elements and flooring; the composition demonstrates Halls mastery of complementary color relationships - the blue costume luminous against the warm red background. The figure shows refined anatomical understanding and tonal modeling; with particular attention to the graceful line from head through torso to pointed foot. The painting exemplifies Halls Studio Incamminati training in working from life; with the color harmonies reflecting the Hensche-Hawthorne lineage she studied under Nelson Shanks and the Art Students League in Manhattan. The subject is the artists daughter; adding personal significance to this accomplished figurative work. Inscribed Anne E. Hall on verso. Presented in an elegant gilt wood frame with cream mat.

CONDITION: Very good overall. The oil paint surface is clean, fresh, and vibrant with no visible cracking, flaking, or paint loss. Brushwork is crisp throughout with rich, saturated color. Canvas is taut and properly tensioned on what appears to be the original stretcher. The linen liner or mat surrounding the canvas within the frame shows minor pencil marks and light scuffing but is generally clean. The gilt-finished frame with black outer molding shows moderate wear including surface scratches, areas of gilt loss exposing the dark underlayer — most notably a chip at the lower left corner — and general scuffing consistent with handling. The verso shows the stretcher bars in good condition with the artist's printed biographical label stapled to the upper stretcher bar. Hanging wire and D-ring hardware are present and functional.

Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz (Witkacy) - Portrait of a Woman With Blue Eyes

Lot #40 (Sale Order 40 of 78)

Portrait of a Woman with Blue Eyes. Pastel on paper; inscribed Witkacy; dated 1931; inscribed N P NTT in simple frame. Well-executed pastel portrait with striking blue eyes. Clear drug notations following Witkacys documented system. Prime period of portrait firm (1924-1939). Attributed to Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz (Witkacy). Currently under review for inclusion in the catalogue raisonne. Vintage Polish publications attached to the back of this painting.

CONDITION: The pastel surface appears well-preserved with strong, vivid color throughout — the blue eyes, auburn hair, and flesh tones remain vibrant and fresh. There are no visible tears, losses, or foxing apparent from the photographs. The paper shows slight overall softness consistent with the medium and age but no significant deterioration. The frame is a modest gold-painted wood construction showing wear, scratches, and minor losses to the gilded surface, particularly at the corners and along the upper rail. The verso is especially noteworthy: it is backed with Polish-language newspaper pages, including visible headlines such as "KWADRATURA KSIEZYCÓW" (Squaring of Moons) and a subtitle referencing "Od Hipokratesa do Leonarda da Vinci" (From Hippocrates to Leonardo da Vinci), along with period photographs. This Polish newspaper backing is consistent with the work's provenance and adds supporting context for its origin. The backing shows age-related yellowing, some water staining, and minor tears. A small triangle hook hanger is visible at the top center.

Polly Doyle (Fleisher) - Wisdom or Folly Polly Doyle (Fleisher) - Wisdom or Folly

Polly Doyle (Fleisher) - Wisdom or Folly

Lot #42 (Sale Order 42 of 78)

Wisdom or Folly. Oil on canvas in four panels; inscribed; with custom wooden frame. Monumental expressionistic figurative composition. The work presents abstracted nude figures rendered in muted tones of gray; blue; beige; coral-red; and touches of gold; with gestural brushwork characteristic of the Boston Figurative Expressionist movement. Each of the four equal quadrants creates a narrative sequence or simultaneous meditation on the human condition; with contorted; dynamic figures suggesting various states of existence and emotional intensity. The titles philosophical duality - wisdom versus folly - invites contemplation of human nature and life choices. This major work exemplifies Doyles mature figurative style at its most ambitious scale; demonstrating the influence of German Expressionism filtered through her training under Karl Zerbe; with bold color relationships and the exaggerated; expressive brushwork typical of Boston Expressionism. The work shows clear affinities to Henri Matisses Fauvist approach and the emotional intensity of Edvard Munch. Artists name and title inscribed on verso. #0137 Estate Inventory Number. Authenticated by John Curuby; President of The Boston Art Club. Certificate of Authentication available upon request.

CONDITION: The painting is in good overall condition consistent with its age. The paint surfaces across the four panels are generally stable with no significant cracking, flaking, or paint loss. The muted palette and thin paint application appear intentional and consistent across all panels. The seams where the four canvases meet are visible as thin horizontal and vertical lines running through the center of the composition, which is inherent to the quadriptych format. The walnut strip frame shows minor wear including small nicks and surface scuffing at the corners. The verso reveals the four individual stretchers joined together with white canvas overlap tacked in place; the artist's name "Polly Doyle" appears in red paint on the tacking margins of each panel, along with the title and date inscriptions in both graphite and red paint. One of the four canvases (lower left) shows moderate foxing or brown spotting on the reverse, suggesting some past exposure to moisture, though no corresponding damage is visible on the painted surface. Hanging wire is strung between eye hooks on the upper two panels. The work would benefit from a professional examination of the reverse canvas condition on the lower left panel.

DIMENSIONS: 44.5 x 44 3/4 in.

Polly Doyle (Fleisher) - Daddy was an Acrobat Polly Doyle (Fleisher) - Daddy was an Acrobat

Polly Doyle (Fleisher) - Daddy was an Acrobat

Lot #43 (Sale Order 43 of 78)

Daddy was an Acrobat. Oil on canvas; dated 1958; bears inscription consistent with the artist and unframed. Dynamic expressionistic composition of acrobatic figures in performance. The work features abstracted human forms rendered in luminous golden yellow and cool gray-blue tones against a richly textured dark gray-brown atmospheric background. Multiple figures are shown in mid-movement - some mounted on what appear to be horses or animals; others in acrobatic poses - creating a sense of circus performance energy and spectacle. The gestural brushwork and bold color contrasts are characteristic of the Boston Figurative Expressionist movement at its height in the late 1950s. The painting demonstrates strong influences from German Expressionism; particularly in the distorted figures and emotional intensity of the palette. The deeply personal title suggests a family narrative; fitting with Doyles practice of creating work with personal historical references. This early work shows the artist fully engaged with the Karl Zerbe-influenced style taught at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts; where she had completed her studies just three years prior. Inscribed and dated lower right P. Doyle 1958. Bears inscription consistent with the artist; date; and title on verso. Presented in a simple wood frame. #0032 Estate Inventory Number. Authenticated by John Curuby; President of The Boston Art Club. Certificate of Authentication available upon request.

CONDITION: Good overall condition with wear consistent with the work's age. The paint surface is generally stable with visible canvas texture throughout. Close examination of the upper right area reveals fine hairline cracking in the darker paint passages, particularly where thicker paint has been applied over thinner layers. A small puncture or indentation is visible in the lower right quadrant of the canvas near the signature area. Scattered minor surface scratches are present in the darker background areas. The gold-toned strip frame shows moderate wear including scuffing, small nicks, and areas where the gilt surface has worn through to reveal the underlying wood, particularly at corners and edges. The verso is clean with the artist's signature, date, and title inscription clearly legible in graphite on the canvas. Original stretcher bars appear sound. Hanging wire and eye hooks are present and functional.

Polly Doyle (Fleisher) - Rapid Transit Polly Doyle (Fleisher) - Rapid Transit

Polly Doyle (Fleisher) - Rapid Transit

Lot #44 (Sale Order 44 of 78)

Rapid Transit. Mixed media on circular canvas (tondo); inscribed and unframed. Ingeniously designed to replicate the iconic circular logo of the MBTA T - Bostons Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority subway system. The circular format of the painting itself represents the famous transit logo. At the compositions center; a luminous white and silver T emerges from a deep navy-black background with an atmospheric; almost ghostly quality created through layered brushwork and varied tonal passages. Bronze-brown vertical elements flanking the T suggest subway tracks or infrastructure columns; grounding the symbol in the physical reality of the underground transit environment. A subtle blue gradient at the bottom evokes the depths of the subway system. The textured; ethereal treatment of the white T creates a sense of movement and energy - the rapid quality referenced in the title. Within this iconic symbol; the artist has subtly concealed figurative elements depicting a family riding the subway; demonstrating her characteristic blending of geometric symbolism with humanist narrative. This conceptually sophisticated work exemplifies the Boston Figurative Expressionist commitment to depicting everyday urban experience and democratic public life through bold modernist form. Artists name; title; and Boston Mass inscribed on verso. #0029 Estate Inventory Number. Authenticated by John Curuby; President of The Boston Art Club. Certificate of Authentication available upon request.

CONDITION: The painting is in good condition overall with some wear consistent with its age. The paint surface is generally stable, though close inspection reveals scattered fine surface scratches in the dark charcoal areas, particularly in the lower right quadrant. There are a few small dark spots or paint splatter marks within the silver-toned areas that appear to be original to the artist's working process. The tacking edges at the top of the circular canvas show some fraying and minor tears where the canvas wraps over the circular stretcher/support, visible in the edge detail photos. The circular backing board or stretcher shows age-related wear. The canvas is mounted to a round hardboard support with the museum school benefit sale label and artist inscriptions in red paint well preserved on the verso. Hanging wire and hardware are present and functional.

After Pablo Picasso Bacchanal with Bull Color Linocut 1962 After Pablo Picasso Bacchanal with Bull Color Linocut 1962

After Pablo Picasso Bacchanal with Bull Color Linocut 1962

Lot #51 (Sale Order 51 of 78)

After Pablo Picasso (Spanish; 1881-1973). Bacchanal with Bull (Bacchanale au toro); 1962. Color linocut reproduction on paper. Unsigned; as issued. Not numbered. Accompanied by Regency Fine Art Certificate (Reg. # FA-00820-750-05/17/94) correctly identifying the work as By/After: Picasso; P. and Not Signed. Pablo Picasso created the original Bacchanal with Bull in 1959 at the age of 78; pioneering the innovative reduction method of linocut printing at the Arnera workshop in Vallauris; France. This technique involved progressively cutting away portions of a single linoleum block between color printings; creating remarkably complex multi-colored images from what was traditionally considered a simple medium. The composition depicts a mythological bacchanalia scene featuring revelers and a bull; themes that recurred throughout Picasso's oeuvre. The bull held particular significance for Picasso; symbolizing strength; virility; and the essence of Spanish culture. In 1962; authorized reproduction editions were issued by Cercle d'Art (Paris); Harry N. Abrams (New York); and Gerd Hatje (Stuttgart). These editions were printed at the Arnera workshops using new linoleum blocks created specifically for the reproductions; resulting in prints approximately 42% smaller than the originals. Unlike the original edition of 50 signed and numbered impressions published by Galerie Louise Leiris; these reproduction editions were issued unsigned and unnumbered; making the present example consistent with these authorized 1962 editions. The original 1959 linocut is recorded in Georges Bloch; Pablo Picasso: Catalogue de l'oeuvre grave et lithographie; and Brigitte Baer; Picasso Peintre-Graveur; no. 1264.

CONDITION: Good condition overall. Colors remain vibrant with no visible fading. The print appears clean with no foxing; tears; or creases visible. Housed in a gilt wood frame under glass. Not examined out of frame.

DIMENSIONS: Image: 11.5 x 13.34 in. (29.2 x 33.9 cm); Frame: 27 x 28 x 2 in. (68.6 x 71.1 x 5.1 cm)

This striking lithograph belongs to Lam's celebrated 1973 portfolio Le Regard Vertical; a suite of six color lithographs representing the culmination of his mature graphic work. The composition showcases his distinctive visual vocabulary: angular; elongated forms that merge human; animal; and vegetal elements -- a synthesis rooted in Santeria iconography and the artist's lifelong dialogue between European modernism and Caribbean spirituality. Lam (1902-1982) remains one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century; bridging the avant-garde movements of Europe with the rich visual traditions of the Caribbean. After studying in Madrid and Paris; where he formed close friendships with Picasso and the Surrealists; Lam returned to Cuba in 1941 and created his most iconic works. His graphic work; particularly the lithographs from the 1970s; continues to be highly sought after by collectors of modern masters.

CONDITION: Excellent condition overall. Colors remain vibrant with no fading. Paper is clean with no foxing; tears; or creases. Margins are full and intact. Framed; not examined out of frame.

DIMENSIONS: Sheet: 25.6 x 19.7 in. (65 x 50 cm)

PROVENANCE: Private Collection of Judy Clancey; Atlanta; GA.

1960s Redwood Live Edge Coffee Table; Manner of Nakashima

Lot #55 (Sale Order 55 of 78)

1960S REDWOOD LIVE EDGE COFFEE TABLE; MANNER OF NAKASHIMA American; Circa 1960s Redwood slab; lacquered surface; charred (shou sugi ban-style) edges and base A mid-century organic modern coffee table crafted from a dramatic redwood slab. The top surface is lacquered to a warm; rich sheen while the natural bark edges and stump base have been charred to a deep black in a technique reminiscent of the Japanese shou sugi ban tradition; creating a striking visual contrast between the glowing red-amber interior and the darkened organic perimeter. At 73 inches long; this is a substantial and commanding piece with strong sculptural presence. The organic; free-form silhouette and celebration of natural wood character place this work firmly in the tradition of George Nakashima and the American Craft movement.

DIMENSIONS: 16.5in. H x 73in. W x 38in. D

CONDITION: Good condition overall. Lacquered top surface in good condition with expected wear. Charred edges and base intact with dramatic visual contrast. Structurally sound. A detailed condition report with additional photographs is available upon request.

Portrait of a Young Man. Pastel on paper; inscribed Witkacy; NP NTT in simple frame. Expressionist portrait with characteristic Witkacy drug notation system (NP NTT = no smoking; no alcohol). Shows his documented portrait firm practice. Contemporary frame. Attributed to Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz (Witkacy). Currently under review for inclusion in the catalogue raisonne.

CONDITION: The paper shows notable creasing and wrinkling throughout, particularly visible in the lower half around the signature area and across the chest/collar region. These creases are consistent with past handling or improper storage of the unframed sheet. There is no apparent foxing, staining, or significant losses to the pastel surface visible from the photographs. The frame is in good condition. Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz (Witkacy) - Expressionist Portrait

Lot #64 (Sale Order 64 of 78)

Expressionist Portrait. Pastel on paper; inscribed Witkacy; dated 1929; drug notation visible; in contemporary frame. Portrait with wild hair and striking blue eyes showing psychological intensity. 1929 date places it five years after founding of portrait firm. Bold use of orange; blue; and black. Dramatic expressionist quality. Vintage Polish publications attached to the back of this painting. Attributed to Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz (Witkacy). Currently under review for inclusion in the catalogue raisonne.

CONDITION: The pastel surface is vibrant and well-preserved with rich, saturated color throughout — the blues of the eyes and background, the warm reds and oranges of the flesh, and the dark brown/black of the hair all read strongly. There are no visible tears, foxing, or major losses apparent from the photographs. The paper shows some slight wrinkling or undulation, particularly noticeable at the upper left, consistent with the sheet not being fully tensioned against a support. The frame shows minor wear to the lacquer finish with small scratches and nicks, and the gold inner lip shows some wear. The verso is particularly rich in provenance material: it is backed with Polish-language newspaper pages featuring visible headlines including "SZEWC I ARTYSCI" (Shoemaker and Artists), "WYSTRZEGAC SIE ROMANTYZMU" (Beware of Romanticism), "NIE DO WIARY: TRANSFUZJA KRWI" (Unbelievable: Blood Transfusion), "KONKURS Z R. 1929 I JEGO BLOGOSLAWIONE SKUTKI" (Competition from 1929 and Its Blessed Results), and "UJARZMIENIE ENERGII WÓD" (Harnessing Water Energy), along with period photographs and illustrations including what appears to be an article about the Tunguska meteorite with illustrations of meteor impacts. A crossbar support and wire hanging hardware are visible. The newspaper backing shows significant age-related yellowing, tears, and losses, particularly at the corners and along the edges, but remains largely intact and legible.

DIMENSIONS: 25 x 19 in.

PROVENANCE: Attributed to Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz (Witkacy). Currently under review for inclusion in the catalogue raisonne. Private collection.
