Spanish M-1891 Carbine 7.65 Loewe (ref#37) Lot #103 (Sale Order 107 of 343) Virtually impossible to find, early Spanish M.1891 Spanish Mauser saddle ring cavalry carbine! Made by Ludwig Loewe, Berlin in 1894, as indicated by markings on the receiver. Caliber: 7.65 mm x 53 Mauser. The carbine is virtually identical to the Argentinian M.1891 carbine, except for markings. The receiver displays early Spanish crest above the place and date of production, "Berlin 1894". The left side of the receiver displays the wording, "Manufactura Loewe, Berlin". Spain ordered 10,000 of M.1891 rifles and 5,000 of M.1891 carbines in 1893 (Spanish M. 1893 Mauser was not adopted yet, as it was still in trials). M.1891 rifles and carbines were shipped to Cuba after an earlier success in Africa, and were used during the Spanish-American War of 1898. There are only a few such carbines in collections in the USA. Virtually all of them were captured in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. US military records show that a small quantity of carbines captured (the carbine is described as a "Argentine model carbine" in the records). Only a few (less than 200) carbines of this pattern were offered for public sale in 1899. Obviously any existing versions of this carbine are extremely rare. s/n3958, bolt and magazine serial numbers do not match, 18” barrel. Faint, bright bore. Blade front sight and ladder type rear sight with folding leaf. “Star” proof marks on butt plate tang and on the side of the rear sight. The action operates crisply, light pitting on the barrel and receiver, the stock has a few relatively minor dents and scratches. A must for the serious Mauser collector.

Spanish Oveido Model 1893 Rifle, marked 1925 Lot #104 (Sale Order 108 of 343) MODEL 1893 SPANISH MAUSER (Possible armory prototype test rifle configuration as reportedly owned by Bob Ball, author of the text, "Military Mausers of the World", s/n 7064, 1303 on the stock, 2398 on the magazine floor plate, bolt not numbered. 25 ½” barrel with a moderate bore, 7 mm. Indications that this may be a test rifle are that the barrel length is shorter than normal, the bolt handle has been bent and the barrel is covered with an unusual shroud at the front of the barrel. We have information that a previous owner of the rifle had the headspace checked and it was OK. This rifle possesses what appears to be a military correct crown. Other interesting features to this rifle include the lack of a bayonet lug and the presence of a pressure relief hole on the left side of the receiver.Blade front sight and ladder style sight at the rear, the receiver ring marked with the Spanish Crown and “-------DE ARMES/-------/1925”. Good condition overall. (ref#40)
