Oliver Otis Howard (1830-1909) was born in Maine. He graduated 4th in his class at USMA in 1854. Howard got his first experience fighting Indians in Florida as chief ordnance officer under Gen. Harney in the Seminole Wars. He then taught mathematics at West Point, planning to retire and become a minister. His plans to preach were thwarted by the outbreak of the Civil War, and Howard’s position on slavery virtually guaranteed that he would remain in service. In 1872 Howard was sent to negotiate with Cochise in an effort to end the guerrilla war with the Chiricahua Apaches. Howard succeeded, establishing a reserve in Southeast Arizona, but many thought he gave Cochise too much land and too many concessions. The situation was different in 1877 when he was sent to persuade Joseph and his band of Nez Perce to leave the Wallowa Valley in Oregon to go to the reservation created for them in Lapwai, Idaho. Although Howard agreed with Joseph that his people had never given up their land by treaty, he informed Joseph that the Nez Perce could not live in Oregon any more, there were too many settlers and conflict was going to arise. When Nez Perce warriors killed several white settlers, Howard brought the full force of the U.S. Army to bear against the hold-outs, pursuing Joseph’s band through Idaho into Montana to nearly the Canadian border. After Joseph’s famous surrender, true to his morals, Howard continued to support the Nez Perce claim on their land, though it did little good. Condition: Some hide drops on bow case have become unattached; small breaks in fringe; practice arrow nearly broken. (EST $5,000-6,000) |

Attributed to George de Forest Brush (American, 1855-1941) Lot #181 (Sale Order 181 of 578) Chief (Samuel) Lone Bear
oil on canvas unsigned 19.25 in. x 23.25 in. George de Forest Brush is known for his classical portraits of Indians, which he painted from 1882-1890; in 1890, Brush abruptly stopped painting Indian portraits. This portrait, probably done in the early to mid-1880s, is typical of Brush's work, even if it is not signed. During the 1880s, Brush worked intermittently as an instructor at the Art Students League in New York. Perhaps Brush painted this as a demonstration for his students, which would explain the absence of a signature. Given the subject matter, handling of paint, and probable date, it seems highly likely that Brush painted this portrait of Chief Lone Bear. For information about Brush see Nancy K. Anderson, George de Forest Brush: The Indian Paintings, published by the National Gallery of Art in 2008, pages 196-205. Condition: Craquelure. (EST $3000 - 5000) |

Charlie Dye (American, 1906-1972) Lot #189 (Sale Order 189 of 578) Good Medicine for a Sick Horse
oil on canvas signed l.r. 39.25 in. x 29.5 in. Dye was part of the second generation of American Western painters and a member of the Cowboy Artists of America, a group of artists that focused on illustrating a waning Western lifestyle. He trained as an illustrator at the Chicago Art Institute and American Academy; in the 1920s he began drawing for magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post, Argosy, and American Weekly. By 1929, Dye, who had grown tired of the fast-paced New York city life, redirected his artistic skills to focus on Western subject matter, like that pictured here. With these works, Dye claimed "I try to paint the truth as I know it and remember it about a life I lived as a young man...such art records a time in history which interests many people, and among them are lots of old-timers who know which end of a cow eats, and I paint for that public." This portrait captures a vignette of Native American life during the middle of the 20th century and shows the juxtaposition between traditional life and consumerism. Here, a man dressed in traditional clothes, is repairing a tire with Bowes Seal Fast. PROVENANCE Illustrated in Arizona Highways, March 1972. Information obtained from Paul Weaver, "Charles Dye," Arizona Highways, November, 1971, p. 28-35. Bowes Seal Fast Corporation Collection Condition: Relined with wax. Darkened varnish and craquelure. Frank E. Schoonover (American, 1877-1972) Lot #190 (Sale Order 190 of 578) The Line Stretched for Miles As It Had Stretched Once Before
oil on canvas signed and dated 26 middle r. with personal inscription To / CH Dreshman / from his friend / the artist / Frank E. Schoonover / July 19, 1935 28 in. x 38 in. Frank E. Schoonover, an American illustrator, is well known for his magazine and book illustrations of eclectic material ranging from Western subjects to historical figures like Joan of Arc. Schoonover studied under the illustrator Howard Pyle (1853-1911). In 1903 Schoonover traveled to the West; the ideas for many of his Western works can be traced to the expedition. In this painting, the artist has depicted a specific historical event, the opening of the Cimarron Strip (Oklahoma). During the 1880s, the American government forced the Cherokees to leave Oklahoma and relinquish their native lands. In April 1989, this previously held Indian land was available for claim and resulted in a dramatic "run" for farms and town lots. Schoonover has captured the drama and excitement of the event by including a long line of eager frontiersman. Armed with caravans, packs, and horses, these men raced, at the sound of a gunshot, to claim unassigned lands. Schoonover's painterly finish at the bottom of the painting adds to the overall sense of drama and urgency. Like other paintings made by Schoonover, this was issued in Country Gentleman magazine in June 1926 and accompanied with a narrative. PROVENANCE Sold by artist to C.H. Eanger Irving Couse (American, 1866-1936) Lot #196 (Sale Order 196 of 578) Eanger Irving Couse is best known for his depictions of a peaceful Indian domestic life; his paintings helped elevate public opinion about Indians. Today, we know that Couse mixed fact with fiction in his romanticized compositions. For this oil painting Couse abandoned his tranquil scenes and painted the tragic massacre of Dr. Marcus Whitman’s family by Cayuse Indians on November 29, 1847 in Oregon. In his artwork Couse captures the drama and essence of the brutal event while retaining an outsider’s stance — merely observing the bloody scene.
Couse trained as an academic painter at the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design, Académie Julian, and Ecole des Beaux Arts. Academic painting regards historical scenes as the most significant type of subject matter. Couse, aware of this, selected the Whitman Massacre for his subject matter. Whitman, a Protestant missionary, had settled along the Walla Walla River in 1836 and hoped to Christianize the Indians, but they were not interested. Therefore Whitman directed his efforts toward the incoming settlers making their way west along the nearby Oregon Trail. The Indians knew that the white settlers and the federal government planned to establish the Oregon Territories and eventually force the Cayuse Indians and other tribes onto a reservation. Hence the Cayuse were highly suspicious and distraught — not only because they might lose their tribal lands, but also because they had suffered greatly during a widespread measles epidemic that seriously affected only Indians. As a result, Whitman, his wife and thirteen other settlers were murdered and several dozen settlers were taken hostage on that fateful day. For more information on Couse and the Whitman Massacre, please go to www.cowans.com. Condition: Minor spotty areas of inpainting on left side of painting. (EST $10,000 - 15,000) |

Plains Stone Club Collected by Major General O.O. Howard Lot #243 (Sale Order 242 of 578) Long wooden handle coated with red pigment; double-pointed stone head, length 32 in.
late 19th century Oliver Otis Howard (1830-1909) was born in Maine. He graduated 4th in his class at USMA in 1854 and became a 2nd Lieut. in the ordnance department. Condition: Wood holding head in place is broken; affixed with twine. (EST $800 - 1000) |

fourth quarter 19th century Oliver Otis Howard (1830-1909) was born in Maine. He graduated 4th in his class at USMA in 1854 and became a 2nd Lieut. in the ordnance department. Condition: Insignificant bead loss. Tonawanda Seneca False Face Staff Lot #287 (Sale Order 284 of 578) Finely carved with head of cane featuring a slightly closed hand holding a red painted false face maskette; body of cane is wrapped with two snakes, the smaller of the two eats a frog; engraved on the head of the larger snake is G.A.M. 1841, probably for George Moses, an important Seneca headman; large brass ferrule, total length 32.5 in.
ca 1841 In 1838, officers from the Ogden Land Company persuaded Six Nations chiefs to sign the Treaty of Buffalo Creek; the agreement sold the remaining Seneca lands (500,000 acres, the reservations of the Allegheny, Callarausus, Tonawanda, and Buffalo Creek) to the Company via the US Government. The Seneca were then moved west to Kansas to claim their 1.8 million acres which the government had set aside for them. According to Lewis Henry Morgan, the treaty was “carried out with a degree of wickedness hardly to be paralleled in the history of human avarice.” In response to this, the Seneca, with the help of Quaker missionaries petitioned the treaty. As a result, another treaty was drawn up in 1842, the Second Treaty of Buffalo Creek or the Compromise Treaty. This document saved the Allegheny and Cattaraugus reservations, but confirmed the sale of Buffalo Creek and the Tonawanda lands. The Seneca living at Tonawanda had not participated in these negotiations and refused to abide by this treaty as well. They separated themselves from the rest of the Seneca nation and became the Tonawanda Band of Seneca. The Chiefs at Tonawanda then began work on retaining title to their reservation. It is believed that this staff belonged to George Moses, a Seneca who lived on the Tonawanda reservation. George Moses, as a headman, signed these treaties and protests. Condition: Excellent. Provenance: Original owner purchased cane from the Moses family, Tonawanda Reservation (EST 6000-8000) |

Mohawk Carved Cradleboard Lot #288 (Sale Order 285 of 578) Probably from the St. Regis area, Quebec; deeply carved and painted in blue, yellow, red, and green; turned cleat supports carved hoop; beautifully carved with a flowering tree of life; four birds are integrated into the design, flying through and nestled within the branches; at the base are two bears, possibly clan totems. Underside of foot-board painted with floral design, length 31 in. x width 14.25 in.
mid 19th century There is much symbolism in the cradle's imagery of the flowering tree holding a mother bird feeding her young; the Iroquois believe that such a tree full of flowers, fruits, and bright lights, exists in the Sky World. Arches represent the Sky World and images of the celestial tree were sewn into the beaded skirts mothers wore.... the carver may add the clan animal of the mother - as that is also the clan of the child - or clan effigies of both parents which would sit at the base of the tree. Quote is on page 24 in Creation's Journey, a work edited by Tom Hill and Richard W. Hill, Sr. and published by the Smithsonian Institution Press in 1994. This style of carving has also been attributed to French Canadian folk artists. In the late 17th century, the Iroquois formed an alliance with the French when they settled in several Catholic villages around Montreal. Hence some of the missionary teachings and French-Canadian folk art influenced the Native Indian arts. For a good discussion of this, see page 57 in a book, Art of the North American Indians, edited by Gilbert T. Vincent, Sherry Brydon, and Ralph T. Coe, published in 2000. Other cradleboards which may have been carved by the same artist can be seen in the 1982 publication, Pleasing the Spirits, by Douglas C. Ewing, figure 451; the 1977 exhibition catalogue, Sacred Circles, figure 77a; and Sotheby's Fine American Indian Art, October 21, 1994, lot 124. Condition: Carved hoop replaced; some paint loss. fourth quarter 19th century Oliver Otis Howard (1830-1909) was born in Maine. He graduated 4th in his class at USMA in 1854 and became a 2nd Lieut. in the ordnance department. Condition: Some light bead loss. (EST $300-500) |
