Oil by Roger M. "Bud" Upton (dated on back - 1950)

Lot #1 (Sale Order 1 of 40)

The consignors family lived on Catalina Island and aquired this painting well over 40 years ago. Sharp Auctions is proud to present this outstanding painting for auction. Biography for Roger Upton from the Archives of AskART: Roger Upton was born in MA, and moved with his family to Pasadena, CA. as a baby. He went to Catalina for the first time with his parents in 1902, and was never far away after that, often spending his summers there. From his earliest childhood, Upton was interested in art. In his early twenties he became a sign painter, working for Foster & Kleiser. It was during this time that he met Hanson Puthuff (1875-1972) and Paul Lauritz (1889-1975), both well-established and well-known CA. plein-air painters who would become his lifelong friends. In 1932, Upton and his wife, moved to Avalon. As was the fate of many artists during those Great Depression years, Upton was unable to make a living exclusively as an easel painter, so he went into the sign business. He also painted murals, created decorations for tour buses, designed menus, and served as the all-around design and artistic consultant for many projects in the area. Upton painted in Avalon longer than any other artist to date. Through his paintings, he recorded the buildings and landmarks of his time, as well as the landscape, weather, and everyday life of Catalina. Through his entire career, Upton chose to paint in his studio rather than out-of-doors. He used photographs, carefully transferring them to his canvas by laying a graph over both canvas and photo and transcribing one to the other. He also painted from memory. Upton is especially well known for his depiction of Catalina's eucalyptus trees. Upton bragged that he had never had any formal art training but was largely self-taught. In 1958 Upton and a group of other Catalina artists formed the Catalina Art Association. In that first year, the group started an annual Catalina Festival of Art, which has been held since 1959.

"The Road to Fallin Timbers" Department of the Army Poster (DA 21-23)

Lot #3 (Sale Order 3 of 40)

The Road to Fallen Timbers DA Poster 21-38 Banks of the Maumee, Ohio, August 1794. Anthony Wayne commanded the Army, enlarged in 1792 and formed into the Legion (now 1st and 3d Infantry Regiments). He trained it into a tough combat team to beat the Indians of the Northwest who had twice whipped us. The Legion advanced into Indian country, feeling its way cautiously. On 20 August 1794 it tracked down the foe, routed him from behind a vast windfall, and destroyed his warriors. Thus the way cleared for the new nation to expand into the Ohio Valley. This was produced by the U.S. printing office in 1953 for the Department of the Army. It is in great condition and has the framing instructions along the bottom.

"Remagen bridgehead" Department of the Army Poster (DA 21-32)

Lot #4 (Sale Order 4 of 40)

Remagen Bridgehead DA Poster 21-32 Remagen Bridghead, 7 March 1945. Here, on the Ludendorf Bridge crossing the Rhine at Remagen, Combat Command B, 9th Armored Division -- headed by the 27th Armored Infantry Battalion -- with "superb skill, daring and esprit de corps" successfully effected the first bridgehead across Germany's formidable river barrier and so contributed decisively to the defeat of the enemy. The 27th Battalion reached Remagen, found the bridge intact but mined for demolition. Although its destruction was imminent, without hesitation and in face of heavy fire the infantrymen rushed across the structure, and with energy and skill seized the surrounding high ground. The entire episode illustrates that high degree of initiative, leadership and gallantry toward which all armies strive but too rarely attain, and won for the Combat Command the Distinguished Unit Citation. This print was produced by the Government Printing Office in 1950 and includes the framing insturctions along the bottom.

Merry Christmas 1776, Department of the Army Poster #21-37

Lot #26 (Sale Order 26 of 40)

Trenton, New Jersey, 26 December 1776. General Washington here matched surprise and endurance against the superior numbers and training of the British, and the Continental Army won its first victory in long months of painful striving. Trenton eliminated 1,000 Hessians and drove the British from their salient in New Jersey. It saved the flagging American cause and put new heart into Washinton's men. Alexander Hamilton's Company of New York Artillery (now D Battery*, 5th Field Artillery) opened the fight at dawn, blasting the bewildered Hessians as they tried to form ranks in the streets. While this may have been true when the caption for this painting was written, a reorganization and redesignation changed the unit's designation to 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery, which today carries the history of Alexander Hamilton's artillery company. Some slight tears around edges in framing area.

"Breakthrough at Chipyong-ni" Department of the Army poster 21-47

Lot #31 (Sale Order 31 of 40)

In February of 1951, the 23d Infantry Combat Team of the 2d Infantry Division, with attached French and Dutch units, while moving forward to attack in advance of the Eighth Army, was cut off and surrounded by overwhelming forces of Chinese Reds in the narrow Korean valley of Chipyong-ni. The Reds occupied the commanding ridges, while the American commander, Colonel Paul Freeman, isolated far in advance of the general battle line, used a ring of lower hills within the valley itself for his defensive perimeter. For more than three days in near freezing weather the defenders held these positions. The action pictured is on the fourth day when an American armored unit broke through from the south. At this time the valiant 23d Infantry Combat Team smashed out of the perimeter at the lower end of the valley to break the encirclement, and with its units and most of its equipment intact, rejoined the Eighth Army. General Matthew B. Ridgway in his official report to a Joint Session of Congress said of this action: "These American fighting men with their French comrades in arms measured up in every way to the battle conduct of the finest troops America or France has produced throughout their national existence."

"The Rock of the Marne" - Department of Army poster # 21-42

Lot #32 (Sale Order 32 of 40)

Near Mzy, France, July 1918. Here the German Army made its last great attack of World War I. It struck in the Marne River area along the road to Paris, and the weight of the blow fell on the 30th and 38th U.S. Infantry Regiments of the 3d Division. This was their first fight. Firing in three directions, blasted by artillery fire, taking all flesh and blood could stand, the regiments held on doggedly and threw the enemy back across the Marne. This defense checked the Germans' assault and made an Allied offensive possible. General Pershing called it "one of the most brilliant pages of our military annals."

"Remember your Regiment" - Department of Army poster # 21-40.

Lot #40 (Sale Order 40 of 40)

Resaca de la Palma, Texas, 9 May 1846. Here Captain Charles A. May's squadron of the 2d Dragoons (now 2d Armored Cavalry Regiment) slashed through the enemy lines in an attack that climaxed the opening campaigns of the Mexican War. Their bravery proved that the 2,500 American soldiers under Zachary Taylor had enough self-confidence and pluck to shatter the Mexican force of 6,000 and eject it forever from Texas. Thereafter throughout the war our Army never lacked daring. May's attack order was simple and effective: "Remember your regiment and follow your officers."
