Condition: generally excellent. Comments: for the French trade, circa 1882, the little mignonettes were presented as "poupees de poche" (pocket dolls). Value Points: fabulous original costume of magenta silk with lace trim and wide satin sash, lace-edged undergarments, woven wide-brimmed bonnet with feathers and flowers, and with especially beautiful face.

Standing at the keyboard of an elegant rosewood and ebony upright piano is a bisque-head doll with bisque shoulder plate, brown glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, lushly-painted lashes and brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, papier-mache hands, elegant silk costume. When wound, she glides her fingers across the keys, pauses, "plays", while turning her head in a realistic manner as though in time to the music. Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well. Marks: Depose E. 6 J (doll). The original paper tune label on the back lists four tunes: Marche des Volontaires, Si L'Amour sur ma Route, Valse #1, and Je Ne Veux Pas. Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1885 the luxury automaton appeared in their catalog as Bebe Piano, with two tunes or, this, the luxury model in a larger size with four tunes. Value Points: rare and elegant automata, its luxury quality attested to by fine cabinetwork of piano, bronze mounts, Sevres porcelain vase, ivory keys, portrait-quality bebe in superb costume, and four tunes of a quality music box.

A bisque-head lady with swivel head and bisque shoulder plate, cobalt blue glass eyes, dark eyeliner, delicately-painted lashes and brows, closed mouth with curved center accent line that projects a gentle smile, ears pierced into head, blonde mohair wig in ornate braided chignon over cork pate, carton torso attached to tin cone-shaped base, metal hands, is costumed in original mauve and ivory silk gown with gilt metallic braid and lace trim, and is connected with a bisque-headed gentleman of equally-refined features, elongated face with aquiline nose, blonde mohair wig. The cone "skirt" hides an internal mechanism, which when wound, causes the dolls to twirl, glide and "waltz" in a realistic manner, while music plays. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Marks: Brevete SGDG Theroude Paris (metal plate on base). Comments: Alexandre Nicolas Theroude, Paris, circa 1865, this automata is shown in Faszinierende Welt der Automaten by Annette Beyer (1983), ex-Marianne Bodmer collection before its acquisition by Candy and Aaron Spelling. Value Points: superb and rare early automata whose elegant movements are rivaled by stunningly beautiful faces and original elaborate costumes, with provenance.

Oil Painting on Canvas, "Doll in Flowered Dress" by Ritta Boemm, Circa 1915 2000/3000

24" x 19" framed. The richly-textured oil painting features an early period character doll by Kathe Kruse, posed semi-profile, with flowered dress, coral shoes and bonnet decorated with large flower at the side. Signed "Boemm Ritta". Excellent condition. The Hungarian-born artist Ritta Boemm (1868-1948) worked in water-color, gouache, and oils, exhibited "Village Street" and "Peasant Farm" at Dresden in 1892, and was noted for her richly-textured still life paintings of cozy scenes in the family home. About 1915 she came across a character doll by Kathe Kruse, and noting that their style complemented her painting genre, created a small series of paintings centering on the dolls. Excellent condition, framed. Ritta Boemm, circa 1915.

Important German Bisque Art Character Doll, 106, by Kammer and Reinhardt 120,000/160,000

21" (53 cm.) Bisque socket head with deeply-sculpted facial features, pale blue upper-glancing painted eyes with dark iris outlined, painted upper eyeliner enhancing the heavy eyelids, one stroke brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with very full outlined lips, impressed dimple at chin, lower cheeks and lip corners, original soft curly blonde mohair wig, composition and wooden ball-jointed body. Condition: generally excellent, one tiny rub on left cheek. Marks: K*R 106 53. Comments: Kammer and Reinhardt, circa 1909, from their art character reform series introduced in 1908 with the goal of presenting dolls representing realistic faces and expressions of children. The sculptor of three of the art character dolls, models, 100, 102, and 107, has been known to be the renowned German artist, Arthur Lewin-Funcke based upon comparison to two of his known sculptures. It is now also believed that this very doll, the model 106, was also created by his hand, based upon close resemblance to the medallion bust that he sculpted of his son, Andreas. Value Points: extremely rare doll, of which only a scant few are known to exist, with extraordinary artistry of both sculpting and painting, is preserved in superb condition, wearing fine antique Scottish plaids of wool and velvet with undergarments, accessories, black leather shoes.

Early French Musical Automaton, Elegant Lady with Guitar by Theroude, Provenance 7500/12,000

A lady of great refinement with wax-over-papier-mache head, slender face, cobalt blue eyes, closed mouth with tiny painted teeth, original brunette wig in extended-length braids that are elaborately woven with beads and feathers, carton torso, wire upper arms, metal hands, tin cone-shaped form under the skirt that contains mechanism. When she is wound, music plays, and she glides and turns, whilst strumming the decorated wooden guitar she holds. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Comments: Alexandre Theroude, circa 1860, the unique cone-skirt protects the hidden mechanism yet still allows the doll to be costumed in a most luxurious manner. Value Points: superb original silk costume with embroidery and applique gilt designs enhanced by lace, tiny pearls and fine craftsmanship of guitar on the rare early piece; this particular piece is photographed in Faszinierende Welt des Automata by Annette Beyer (1983), and is ex-collection Marianne Bodmer before its acquisition by Candy and Aaron Spelling.

A heavy papier-mache figure Polichinelle with socket head and wire-jointed arms and legs has sculpted and painted facial features, jester cap, costume with traditional front and back humps, and pointy-toe shoes with pom-poms, with decorations continued on the back. Condition: generally excellent, original finish. Comments: French, mid-19th century, possibly Malet-Noret of Paris, circa 1856, the firm specialized in "all sizes of Polichinelles, dressed talking pantins, luxury marottes and actors and marionettes for puppet theatres". Value Points: rare and well-preserved early Polichinelle, along with an early wooden throne chair with original cream and gilt paint.

Extremely Rare French Musical Automaton "Kneeling Egyptian Harpist" by Vichy 30,000/45,000

A papier-mache lady with slender face and refined features, brown glass eyes with articulated eyelids, long brunette flowing hair, has papier-mache body posed in kneeling manner on a wooden three-stepped platform with marbleized finish and carpet, alongside a wooden string harp with elegant shape ornamented with a figural head of an Egyptian lady. She is wearing ivory silk crepe de chine gown with tulle veil, jewelry and head dress, and has painted sandals. When wound, she elegantly plucks the harp, her right arm moving laterally to the instrument as her right jointed wrist bends to "pluck" the strings. Then her left arm rises and falls vertically in an arc. Meanwhile her head turns and nods as though gazing at the strings and then at her audience, her breastplate heaves slowly in a breathing motion, and her eyelids open and close. There are two tunes. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Comments: Gustav Vichy, circa 1890, from his deposed luxury series, this being model 661 described as "Egyptian a genoux". Value Points: the rarity of the wonderful automaton is rivaled by its superb presentation and luxury quality of music and movements; few are known to exist.

Outstanding Luxury French Musical Automaton "Lady at the Harp" by Vichy 35,000/55,000

32" (80 cm.) An elegant lady with oil-painted papier-mache features, brown glass eyes with movable eyelids, closed mouth with hint of teeth and smile, long flowing brunette human hair, carton torso with lady shape, articulated wrists, long slender legs posed to balance on one while the other is stepped back and balanced on tiptoe, wearing a superb sienna crepe de chine gown with metallic lace and trim, and with jewelry hiding the wrist articulation, and painted sandals, is standing upon a beautifully-crafted circular rosewood and velvet base with carpeted floor below the harp. When wound, she gracefully turns her head side-to-side, blinking her eyelids and periodically gazing upward at her audience, and then down to watch her hands glide across the harp strings in a realistic plucking motion; in addition, her wrists move independently of her arms, and her breastplate moves up and down as though breathing. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Comments: Vichy, Paris, circa 1895, their luxury deposed model #486, which appeared in their catalog as "Merveilleuse Jouant de la Cythare". Value Points: extremely rare and prestige automaton with a stunning detail of quality production ranging from the cabinetry of the base, to the superb arch-shaped diatonic harp known as a "cythare" with elaborately carved figurehead of Bacchus to the elegant costuming designed to enhance the gliding movement of the harpist. Ex-Merrick Collection, this piece was demonstrated at the founding meeting of Musical Box Society. Few examples are known to exist.

Felt swivel head with pressed and painted facial features, flirty brown glass googly eyes, brown painted curly upper lashes, brows, rounded nose, "O" shaped mouth with shaded lips, black mohair wig with topknot captured in black felt coiffe and braided silk ribbon, muslin torso, jointed felt arms and legs. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Lenci (two paper and cloth labels). Comments: Lenci, the glass googly model was introduced in 1936 and made for three years only, this model has pencil label "Fobello", indicating that it represents a child from Fobello, a region north of Turin, Italy. Value Points: rare and delightful googly with vibrant crisp colors, lovely cheek blush, wearing fresh original felt costume with wonderful matching embroidery and pom-poms on the apron and boots.

Of ebony-black felt with pressed and painted facial features, swivel head, narrow side-glancing brown eyes, accented nostrils, red stitched and padded red lips, black curly mohair wig wrapped in a lime green felt turban decorated with embroidery and "jewels", slender black felt torso, jointed long slender black felt arms, and very elongated long black felt legs with jointed knees. Condition: near mint. Marks: Lenci (two original paper labels, one pencil noted "260"). Comments: Lenci, a standing version of the same model appeared in the 1924 catalog, also identified as model 260, and named "Sam", described as "The Sultan's Moorish Guard"; the 260 model was likely made for one or two years only. Value Points: the rarity of the model is rivaled by its pristine condition, and the extraordinary detail of costume, with vibrant appliques and embroidery on the green felt vest, sash, pants, slippers, and gloves, and with one original gilt-painted wooden earring, and a hand-carved wooden figural necklace.

A beautiful black-complexioned papier-mache lady with brown glass eyes, mohair lashes, painted brows, open mouth with two rows of teeth, dark mohair wig arranged under turban, carton torso and legs with bare feet, defined toes, wire upper arms, papier-mache hands, wearing her original elaborate silk and brocade costume with lace sleeves and elaborate embroidery, appears to be holding a large woven basket filled with garden wares, notably three large colorful flowers. The basket is actually attached to the mechanism in her torso. When wound, she turns and nods her head in a realistic manner as though calling out to passers-by, while her eyes blink open and closed. Then the basket reveals, in sequence, its three surprises. One-by-one, a "flower" opens to reveal, in turn, a papier-mache monkey with blinking glass eyes and chattering mouth, a bisque girl who dances and twirls about, and a papier-mache mouse which runs in circles over and over again. Two tunes play. Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well. Comments: Gustav Vichy, circa 1885. Value Points: an outstanding example of the intricate automaton with 11 different animations, perfectly-preserved original finish, original costume, rare mohair lashes, and wonderful surprises.

30" (76 cm.) Two vivacious papier-mache clowns are posed upon a wooden stage with red velvet draperies and five front steps, ready to begin their performance. Each has oil-painted white complexion and dramatic clown decorations, piercingly-brilliant blue glass eyes, articulated eyelids, white mohair clown wig and silk costume embroidered with musical symbols. One clown has a well-defined frowning expression and the other a wide beaming smile with painted teeth. Their musical "instruments" are whimsical confections, one wrought of a saucepan and the other carved of wood. When wound, they begin their performance: turning their heads from side-to-side, blinking their eyes, and side-stepping in unison while strumming their instruments. Suddenly, the sullen clown, in an apparent attack of jealousy, attempts to kick the cheerful clown off the stage. The cheerful clown is blissfully indifferent, and just turns in the other direction and kicks out of sequence. Music accompanies their performance and a large Vichy-style motor drives the movements from six cams. Condition: generally excellent, music and movements function well. Comments: Vichy, circa 1910 during Triboulet era, the theme plays upon the popular French legends of "Jean qui rire et Jean qui pleure" (John who laughs, John who cries). Condition: generally excellent. Comments: the model was patented by Robert Clay of The Automatic Toy Works in 1871 under the unusual title "The Creeping Doll"; when wound, the doll "crawls" forward in an amusing and realistic manner. During its decade-long existence the firm issued 14 or more clockwork toy designs. Value Points: rare early American mechanical doll in wonderfully-preserved condition, great character expression of young child obviously delighted at its ability to "crawl" and with unusually well-executed detail of sculpting.

Standing upon a velvet-covered wooden platform is a paper-mache head with gentle blue glass eyes, ruddy nose, open mouth with movable tongue, brunette mohair wig, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, papier-mache hands, wearing a blue silk jacket and velvet striped pants, shirt, vest, bow tie, wooden shoes and woven tall hat. He holds a wine bottle in his right hand, and a pink piglet tucked in the crook of his left arm. When wound, music plays, he nods his head back and forth and side-to-side and, moving his arm, offers a drink to the piglet who jumps forward in delight. Condition: generally excellent, light face scuffs, right hand worn, mechanism and music function well; re-costumed in antique fabrics and with original costume included. Comments: Roullet & Decamps, circa 1880, shown in their catalog as model 295 "Paysan et son Cochon". Value Points: rare and amusing automaton with delightful activity, the piglet with his original plaid blanket.

Seated upon a wooden bench is a papier-mache boy with highly-characterized scowling expression, glass eyes, closed mouth modeled as though open with painted teeth, dark brown mohair wig, carton torso and legs in seated position with jointed left knee, bisque hands, wearing striped velvet pants, silk shirt, silk vest, handkerchief, knit shirt, knit striped stockings, and black laced shoes, and a dunce cap on his head. He is holding a book, and a basket labeled "John" is at his side. When wound, two tunes play and the movements begin: he turns his head from side-to-side as though reading his book, then gazes upward, lifting his arm as though to wipe away tears and finally covering his face in shame, while his dunce cap ears flap up and down and he taps the bench with his foot. Condition: generally excellent, music and motion function well. Comments: Vichy, circa 1900. Value Points: the amusing automaton, which appeared in the Vichy catalog as #467 "modele depose" played upon the popular French legend of "Jean qui pleure", a mischievous boy who was constantly in trouble.

A heavy cast bronze Mandarin magician with elaborately-sculpted costume in traditional style and having impressed designs, earrings, moustache, and cap is standing behind a gilt bronze table with star and fringe accents. Music and movements are wound separately, and the music can be elected to play alternate tunes, repeat, or can be played separately without the movements. When wound, the Mandarin nods his head, and in a series of movements lifts both magic domes atop his table or only one; meanwhile the secrets under the domes are alternately revealed: cups, dice, cones and such, or, sometimes, nothing. The table cover can be removed by two screws at the back to reveal the spring barrel automaton movement. The automaton is resting upon an inlay rosewood base which contains the music box. Condition: generally excellent as shown, music and motion function well, the automaton originally rested atop a bronze clock, but here, instead, the automaton is resting atop the inlaid musical base. Comments: J.F. Houdin, Paris, circa 1836. Value Points: extremely rare and early automaton of luxury production and superb state of preservation, very elaborate movement with 16 hidden surprises that are alternately revealed.

Standing upon a wooden platform as though waiting for the theatre curtain to rise, is a man with highly-characterized papier-mache face highlighted by a kindly smile, with oil-painted complexion featuring rosy make-up on nose, cheeks, ears and chin, brown glass eyes, articulated eyelids, closed mouth, sculpted details of forehead wrinkles, brown human hair wig, carton torso, hands posed to be able to hold his hat, over-sized feet with painted black shoes, and wearing a green woolen suit with purple lapels and red buttons, silk vest with double row of brass buttons, white shirt and silk tie. When wound, he seems to come to life from his standing pose, then alternately taps his very-oversized feet, first one, then the other, then blinks his eyes, bends far forward in an amazing feat of balance while simultaneously lifting his right arm and thus extending his hat to the audience. He, then, slowly raises himself while drawing his hat back to his body and, finally, stands, open-hatted, satisfied with his performance. Music plays throughout. Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanisms function well. Comments: Roullet & Decamps, circa 1910, inspired by the English stage performer, Henry Relph, billed as "Little Tich", and indeed, the face of this automaton aptly resembles photographs of Relph, as does the action; Relph's unique performance was based upon wearing shoes that were "half as long as he is tall". The "Little Tich" automaton was exhibited at the 1908 International Exhibition of which one juror, Serre Telmon, wrote "its elegance is equaled by its ingenuity...Little Tich accompanies his dancing, his gesture and his legendary poses with blinking of the eyes". Value Points: the well-preserved state of the automaton, along with its wonderful movements, are rivaled only by its rarity for few examples are known to exist.

The bust is mounted upon a well-crafted wooden plinth, and holds a wooden banjo in his arms. When wound, the man turns his head from side-to-side, blinks his eyes, and teasingly sticks out his tongue, while playing his banjo; suddenly, when the music ends, he lifts his right arm triumphantly in the air as though to signal the end of the performance. Condition: generally excellent, music and movements function well. Comments: Gustav Vichy, circa 1890. Comments: Lenci, circa 1925, the doll was shown as model #554 in their 1925 catalog, named simply "Josephine", and is one of the very few Lenci dolls to actually bear a celebrity name. He has painted white clown complexion and painted clown decorations including one diamond-edged eye and a rosy nose tip, brown glass eyes, articulated eyelids, open mouth with painted teeth, wiry two-color clown hair, and wears his original diamond-patterned silk clown costume over carton torso, papier-mache legs and lower arms. When wound, he nods his head in a circular motion, then turns to the left while gesturing with his left hand as though to draw the attention of onlookers. Then, turning to the right, he performs his juggling act, moving his right arm side-to-side while the ball appears to move up and down on the stick. Throughout music plays, his tongue moves in and out in a whimsical happy manner, and his eyelids blink. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. The amusing pair of mechanical clown toys depict mischievous antics, each on identically-styled tinplate stage with pierced holes for emanation of musical sound, and with hidden wind-up mechanism below. One depicts a clown with trombone riding on the back of another clown who has cymbals attached to the toes of his clown shoes, and the other depicts a fiddle-playing clown on a chair seated alongside a clown on a barrel. When wound, they each perform amusing actions while tinkling music plays. A bellows action allows the trombone clown and the barrel clown to bounce up and down, for example. Condition: the finish is completely original, albeit well worn, mechanism and music function well on both. Comments: circa, 1890. Value Points: the rarity of the two early toys is rivaled only by their charming actions, music, and unusual complicated mechanisms.

There are lake and country scenes, sheep-herder, and a church whose tower retains the original porcelain clock face whose dial is in exact scale with the tower, and which is an actual working clock with 2-train clockwork movement, silk thread suspension and gong chiming on the hour and the half-hour, just as the village clock would chime. The painting is arranged within a decoratively-carved wooden frame with gilded finish. Excellent condition of mechanism and beautifully-detailed painting with children-at-play themes. An old woman with highly-characterized head of papier-mache, is seated on a wooden chair, having glass eyes, sharp nose, open mouth with missing teeth, red age lines on face, grey mohair wig under Charlotte cap, carton torso with mechanism, papier-mache hands and lower legs. She is dressed in a burgundy gown with green cotton apron, black fringed shawl with embroidered flowers, beads, woolen stockings, black shoes, and holds a knitting bag on her lap and knitting work and needles in her curled fingers. When wound, she nods her head back and forth as though intently watching her handiwork, and her hands move to and fro in a realistic knitting manner, while music plays. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and movement function well. Comments: Roullet et Decamps, the automaton appeared in their catalog as #265, "Vielle Tricoleuse" (old lady knitting), circa 1890. Two Kathe Kruse dolls, boy and girl, are posed shyly as they watch a long-beaked duck and four little yellow chicks at their feet; a vase is posed nearby suggesting that the scene takes place on a table top. The girl is holding up her skirt hem as though worried that the duck is about to nip her. The painting is signed Ritta Boemm. The Hungarian-born artist (1868-1948) was noted for her genre still-life paintings of homey scenes, and discovering the Kathe Kruse dolls sometime about 1910, she realized how fittingly they could be incorporated into her own art, creating a life-like sense into an otherwise still life. A small series of the paintings was created by the artist about 1915. This is in excellent original condition, framed.

When wound, she turns her head from side-to-side and nodding in a complicated manner, while strumming the mandolin, and periodically tapping her foot to the music that is playing. Comments: Leopold Lambert, a variation of #49 featuring a clown with guitar that was shown in an early catalog of the company; although both pieces showed the identical distinctive stool, and were described as having a "rich costume of silks and laces", with same pose and leg movement, the clown differed by having a papier-mache head which allowed tongue and eye movement, and appeal to a different market, circa 1885. In her right hand she holds a ball and string toy, and scattered around the floor at her feet are a fur-covered white kitten, an all-bisque miniature doll, a jump rope, and a little basket. When wound, the doll turns her head from side-to-side, opening and closing her eyes and alternately lifting each hand, as though to tease the kitten with the ball and string; on occasion, she leans forward and kicks her foot up and down in delight, while the tune "Ta Ra Ra Buum" plays. Condition: generally excellent, silk dress has some frailness, mechanism and music function well. Marks: SH 1039 7 dep (doll head) L.B. Comments: Alexandre Theroude, circa 1860, the grand lady may have been exhibited at the International Exposition of London in 1862 where Theroude is known to have exhibited to the praise of the jury who noted that his display showed "incontestable superiority". When wound, the doll gracefully combines the skills of ballet dancing and tightrope walking, moving back and forth across the bar, on tiptoe, twirling and raising the garland up and down in a a graceful motion. When wound, she turns her head from side-to-side, lifts the tea pot she holds in her right hand to pour into the cup that she holds in her left hand, then offers the cup, music plays. Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1890; Lambert commissioned a special series of bisque heads from Jumeau that would highlight the theme of his automata; some of these heads were later created as bisque dolls by Jumeau (such as the 200 series), but others (including this one) were only used for the original commission purpose. A wicker basket suspends from her shoulders and appears to support another wicker basket with lid (the second basket actually is attached by hidden metal rods to her torso). When wound, she turns her head, nods, and lifts the berries she holds in her left hand; meanwhile, the lid of the basket slowly arises and the little feathered bird within lifts his head and awakens. Condition: costume and bisque are excellent, music and mechanism function well except bird's chirp is weak and nodding mechanism need adjustment. Marks: 9 (and artist checkmarks). Comments: Gustav Vichy, Paris, circa 1885, the model was marketed as "La Mascotte" in reference to the 1880 French operetta "La Mascotte"; this example, with earlier Jumeau head, is a variation of #36 in this book, with earlier bisque head. Comments: Dewees Cochran, circa 1960, the portrait model of little April Anne was created by the American artist on special commission, using her Angela Appleseed model of her Grow-Up Doll Series. Value Points: beautiful doll in well-preserved condition, wearing original artist-made costume, along with an added gold heart locket (with attached 1943 Valentine card noting that "tiny gold locket was given April on this Valentine day". Posed upon a velvet-covered wooden stage with flowered arbor forming a background scene, is a paper-mache moon-faced dandy with over-size head, movable glass eyes, movable thick brows, mouth with broadly-beaming smile and inserted pipe, brunette human hair curls under a gold-silk party hat, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, papier-mache hands. He is costumed in rich silks and velvets in an 18th-century style court costume. When wound, a wonderful series of events occur, while several different quality tunes are heard: he turns his head to and fro while simultaneously; his eyes "flirt", his brows move up and down and his hat moves up and down. He leans his head forward, and lifts the glass cane that he holds in his right hand, twirling it, and smokes pipe. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Comments: the "Moon-Faced Dandy" was designed and created by Michel Marcu of France, circa 1980 on special commission for Aaron and Candy Spelling.

Contemporary French Musical Automaton "The Dapper Monkey Smoker" 3000/5500

24" (61 cm.) Standing upon an elaborate velvet-covered wooden stage is a papier-mache monkey presented as an elegantly-dressed gentleman, with swivel head, brown glass eyes, flocked brown hair and beard, small hole in mouth, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, papier-mache hands. When wound, music plays, he turns his head, brings his right arm toward his face and takes a draw from the cigarette that he is holding; then turns his head in the other direction and exhales. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Comments: "The Dapper Monkey Smoker" was commissioned by Candy and Aaron Spelling from the French automaton artist, Michel Marcu, circa 1980. Value Points: artistic rendition of the 19th century classic favorite, the monkey wears elegantly-foppish costume of rich silks, lace and wool, with top hat and jewel-tipped walking stick.

Swiss Six-Tune Musical Automaton "The Bird Trainer" by Michel Bertrand 10,000/15,000

43" (109 cm.) Standing upon a velvet-covered wooden base is a papier-mache Mandarin with sienna-tinted papier-mache swivel head sculpted uniquely for this automaton, with very narrow glass eyes, articulated eyelids, and articulated lower lips, black mohair wig, goatee and Fu Manchu style moustache, carton and wood body with one-piece torso and legs, wire upper arms. He is costumed as a Renaissance-style minstrel with lavish velvet costume accented with gold fleur-de-lis designs which are repeated on his slippers and splendid feathered cap and red-lined cape; lace ruffles edge his sleeves and cap. When wound, a wonderful and intricate series of movements, sound, and music occur, in the theme of the minstrel teaching a red-feathered bird, perched on his finger, to sing. The Bird Trainer nods, turns his head, moves his lips as though talking, blinks his eyes, and brings the flute to his mouth. He "plays" the flute, his three articulated fingers moving in a realistic manner, to the melody that the hidden music box plays. Then, ending the flute playing he turns, bidding the bird to repeat the song. The bird then takes the stage, turning his head from side to side, and begins to sing his own bird song, occasionally pausing, then singing again, but always his own bird song, never the man-made melody. The extraordinary automaton has long-running spring movement, nine animations and six melodious tunes. Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well. Comments: Michel Bertrand, successor to Vichy firm, created "The Bird Trainer" at the end of the 20th century, inspired by the original Vichy 1890 automaton "Dresser d'Oiseau"; of the original model only two are known to exist, and it is believed that Bertrand created only two of this adapted version. Value Points: extraordinary work of art with complicated and wonderful motions and music, beautifully-preserved.
