11" (28 cm.) Sonneberg bisque doll resembling portrait Jumeau with wrap-around eyes 300/500

Lot #3 (Sale Order 3 of 275)

Bisque socket head with flattened solid dome, very large blue glass inset eyes known as "wrap-around", with spiral detail, rose blushed eye shadow, brush-stroked brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, brunette human hair, composition and wooden eight-loose-ball=jointed body, straight wrists, pretty antique dress. There is an old hairline at back neck socket to back of ear. Marks: 11. Sonneberg, circa 1882, in modeling and decoration the very rare doll perfectly emulated the French portrait bebe whose market it sought to capture.

Solid domed bisque head with flanged neck, light brown boyish hair, blue intaglio side-glancing eyes with white eyedots, closed mouth with tiny drilled hole for "whistling" when his bellows torso is squeezed, muslin torso and limbs, composition arms. Excellent condition, whistling works! Marks: 8774 Heubach (square) Germany 2. Gebruder Heubach, the wonderful facial model is perfectly apt for his whistling action, the doll was marketed as "Whistling Jim", circa 1912.

When wound, the clown tries to hammer closed the crate lid, but Polichinelle pushes it open and emerges, while music plays. Excellent condition, music and motion function well. Staffordshire trinket box depicting a baby with sculpted bonnet posed in a baby bed with ruffled and be-ribboned blanket and large pillow, holding a rattle in her hand; some early restoration. Carved wooden head with solid dome, swivel neck on wooden shoulder plate, fabric midriff (disguising a bellows crier), and upper arms and legs, carved wooden lower arms, lower legs and feet, and lower torso, rare glass enamel eyes. The doll was inspired by the Japanese Ichimatsu doll introduced at the London International Exposition of 1850, and various French and German doll makers rushed to present Western versions of the play doll in materials ranging from porcelain to bisque to paper mache to, this, very rare, wooden example. The finish is original albeit worn, nose tip rubbed. Rare doll with rare features including glass eyes and swivel neck. Germany, circa 1860.

Each has tin body enclosing wind-up mechanism that operates from keyhole at side torso. When wound, the bear does tumble-saults, and the mouse tosses the little mouse playfully in the air. Each is in fine unplayed with condition, functions well, and is presented in original box labeled "Marshall Field and Company 1833 Century of Progress 1933 Retail Toy Section" and the larger with original price sticker. Schuco, circa 1933.

The Monica Doll Studio was established in Hollywood in 1941 and presented dolls for the next decade only; the dolls were expensive at the time, and are rarely found today.
