Standing upon a wooden platform with spoke wheels and simple mechanical arrangement hidden below, is a bisque head man with brown sculpted hair and beard, painted brown outlined eyes, accented nostrils, painted lashes and brows, closed mouth with center accent line, block torso, wire upper arms and legs, wooden lower limbs, painted boots, original costume of silk faille and velvet. The man is attached to the base by a metal rod and holds the leashes to two paper mache hunting dogs which are also posed on metal rods. When the toy is pulled along, the man nods his head up and down as though calling the dogs, tugs at their leashes, and the dogs jump up and down in an eager manner. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1870, the maker remains unknown of this series of uniquely made mechanical pull toys, this example being a very early example. Value Points: outstanding sculpting and rarity of the model of the gentleman enhance the mechanical toy which is, in itself, also very rare.

The wooden framed room is centered by a charming set-back sun room having especially high wainscoting, carved archway entrance and diamond-patterned carving of sun window panes. Waist-high wainscoting continues around the larger room, below original paper walls, and there is a large carved faux-door, original papered floor, and original fluted room frame. The room is furnished with a highly carved dining set that is original to the room, as well as a carpet, Christmas tree in the sun room, a large collection of antique pewter steins and dishes, and other accessories including moose head, prints, cross-bow, other hunting miniatures, and three stoneware jugs, one with a raised figural design of Kaiser Wilhelm. Excellent condition. Germany, circa 1895, Mey & Widmayer, the room and furnishings were illustrated in their 1894 catalog described as "deutscher Renaissance"in style.

She holds a miniature Parisian newspaper in one hand, and a pocket watch in the other. When wound, she turns and nods her head, her eyes "flirt"and she lifts her right hand to check the time, while impatiently tapping her feet as she waits for the train which seems to be delayed. Extremely Rare and Charming Swiss Musical Mechanical Carousel by August Lassueur 8000/15,000

Enclosed within a beautifully-crafted six-sided wooden cabinet with inlay, painted scenes and fancy ebony columns is a 19th-century carousel featuring galloping horses and curtained gondolas of decorated painted tin, with delighted riders on each; the carousel is covered by its original canopy with lavish decorations of lace, pearls and colored glass baubles on the inside roof. When wound, the carousel merrily revolves and the horses and riders move up and down in classic fashion, while six different tunes play in sequence. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well, original coin-operated mechanism revised to keywind, cabinetry well-preserved. Marks: August Lassueur 15 Fev [18]97 Ste.Croix, Suisse (original paper label on interior). Comments: August Lassueur, circa 1897, the carousel was created by the Swiss craftsman who specialized in "creations for public amusement"by fitting his carousel with Swiss music boxes. Each was, designed to be placed in the waiting room of a Swiss Railway station for the entertainment of passengers. Value Points: very rare and historically-fascinating automaton is well-functioning, has fine original cabinet, figures and accessories, and plays six different tunes which are listed on the tune label including tunes, such as the national anthems of Russia and France, that were designed to inspire longing and anticipation from the travelers who were presumably heading in those directions.

A sales clerk stands at the counter offering a selection of toys and dolls to a gentleman and lady and their two eager young children, while another clerk descends a stair case with still more toys in his arms. Architectural details in the background include shelves, columns, chandeliers, and draperies. Very good condition with some light paint wear, and needing remounting, unframed. French, circa 1880, a wonderfully detailed, animated and vibrant scene is accurately and charmingly depicted.

Polichinelle has blue glass eyes, painted features, closed mouth, blonde mohair wig, carton torso, hands and feet with painted jester shoes, humps at front and back torso, and is wearing an aqua and rose silk satin Polichelle costume with tunic, pants, and tall hat with lace and bells trim, and the horse has original harness. When pulled along, Polichinelle turns his head from side to side and waves the whip he holds in his hand. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: F.G. (in scroll) Comments: the doll by Gaultier, the maker of the classic pull-toy is unknown, circa 1890. Value Points: wonderful theme and fine state of preservation of the classic French Etrennes toy.

The tall drum-shaped box is covered with lithographed scenes of the royal court of Louis XVI, including "Trompette des Chevau Legers"and "Gendarme de la Garde", and hand-painted scenes of the royal crown, fleur-de-lis and other symbols on the reverse side. Cording with leather straps binds the drum, in drumlike style, and the top is removable for access to a paper lined interior which served originally as a receptable for luxury treats or toys. The trio of military hats are decorated authentically to represent particular units and branches of the military, with leather brims, cording, brass appliques and more. Included is Casquette d'Afrique 1835, Gendarmerie d'Afrique, 1839, and Infanterie de Ligne Officiende de Grenadiers, 1852-1856. The hats could be worn by gentleman doll about 16"-17".

A Rare Discovery of French Paper Mache "Sixteen-Surprise Magician" Automaton with Cruchet Signature

20" (51 cm.) overall. 14"man. 16" x 16" base. Arranged upon an ebony-wood base with faux-rosewood floor is a man with paper-mache head, black side-glancing eyes, artistically-painted features, fine white hair beard, moustache, sideburns and hair that is captured under an elaborately-wrapped silk turban, with carton torso and legs, paper mache hands, posed behind two bi-level wooden tables with velvet and metallic-fringe skirts. The upper table holds a green crystal ball and two cones which the magician is holding, and the lower table holds an assortment of magic symbols including wheels, cone, cards, die, magnet and balls, and more, whose only purpose is decorative. Within the base is an intricate arrangement of wooden and brass works, and a musical box; the mechanism and music are wound separately. When wound, the magician turns his head side to side, nodding, and then alternately lifts his hands revealing surprise after surprise, while music plays. There are sixteen surprises in all: jester head, carrot, bust of woman, gold ball, red ball, bell, glass vase, green ball, crystal ball with a feather, bust of a man, three balls, another bust of a man, hexagon ball and two dice. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well, the presentation and costume are perfectly preserved, having been in a glass vitrine for nearly 175 years. Comments: Marie Emmanuel Cruchet, French, the artist and inventor was written about in the landmark French toy histories Les Jouet de France by Leo Claretie and Les Jouets... by Nicolle, with refernce to his imaginative and delightful pieces, which appear to have been made one by one, by himself. This present Magician example was made, possibly as early as 1830, as he is known to have worked during the period of Restoration, but certainly no later than 1840. (See The Encyclopedia of French Dolls, Vol I, page 161-163). Yet few examples of his works have even been absolutely identified with his signature, making this an important discovery as well as a delightful musical work. When wound, the little girl turns her head from the side, nods, and then alternately lifts the feather-fan she holds in her right head, fanning herself, and lifts the book of Fables, with blue velvet and bone cover, as though to read, while music plays. When the handle at front is turned, the circular base revolves, twirling the couples in unison, and, in addition, each couple twirls separately. Meanwhile two children stand at the back, turning in time to the dance, while one plays the violin. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: attributed to Zinner and Sohne, circa 1890. Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulder plate with unique construction allowing for easy swiveling of head; a different face appears on each side of head allowing either a cheerful or crying face to be shown while the alternate face is covered by the pivoting wig. One face, with very plump cheeks and chin and delicate pale complexion has shaded-blue painted eyes with black outline and painted lashes, feathered brows, accented eye corners and nostrils of little upturned nose, closed mouth modeled as though open with a row of painted teeth; and the other face with rosy complexion from crying, has painted blue squinting eyes with heavy eyelids, small painted lashes, scowling painted brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth modeled as though open and crying, accented lips. The bebe is on her original kid bebe body with gusset-jointing of hips and knees and one-piece arms with bisque forearms. Condition: generally excellent, restoration to tip of left baby finger. Marks: Depose 1 (front shoulderplate) (original Bru paper label on torso). Comments: Leon Casimir Bru, who deposed a double-faced poupee in 1867, and then some years later, c. 1884, introduced (but never deposed) his double-faced bebe with a distinctively-constructed movable wig and two distinctive facial models used for this double-faced bebe only. An X-Ray of the unique internal construction is shown in The Bru Book by Theimer, page 97. Comments: Leon Casimir Bru, Bebe Modele was first mentioned in his 1879 advertising and appears to only have been made until 1883 at the latest, always in very limited exclusive numbers. The wooden-bodied bebe or child doll was a continuation of his deposed wooden-bodied poupee or lady doll, also a luxury model. This example, with Brevete face, is the earliest period model. There is an opening paneled door between the rooms which are furnished with rare Biederemeier pieces having gilt-stenciled accents and faux-bone edging, including drop-front desk, chest, pedestal table, large armoire marble-top table, various chairs, and a fitted sewing table. The room has a collection of eight different clocks, various ormolu pieces including album frame and easel, wall prints and mirrors, silver and porcelain accessories, beaded early candelabra, and various dollhouse people including a moustached gentleman who is likely the clock collector. An Outstanding French Musical Automaton "L'Homme Serpent" of Vichy Lineage 25,000/35,000

34" (86 cm.) l. base, 24" acrobat, 39" overall h. A wooden pedestal table with velvet cover is set center-stage on a tapestry-covered platform with nine-steps on either side. Posed upon the platform is an acrobatic contortionist, having staff/composition head, blue glass eyes, flocked brown hair and open mouth with teeth, dressed in an ivory satin costume with black stockings and satin shoes. Beginning his performance, the acrobat lies flat, head down, balanced upon his hands; the table swivels and he makes a scissor movement with his legs while nodding his head. He raises his legs. The table swivels again, he raises his head and lifts his stomach off the table, arching his back and raising his legs in an amazing contortionist manner. He repeats the scissoring movement, and then lowers himself, to repeat the performance. There are six musical tunes. Condition: generally excellent, all original, mechanism and music functions well. Comments: Michel Bertrand, successor to the original Vichy firm, with original parts from the Vichy workshop including the head with original paint, torso mechanism and six tune musical movement, the piece was assembled and completed in the late 20th century, based upon the Vichy model #622. The extraordinary movements are based upon the man's uniquely partitioned body consisting of wood block sections connected by multiple hinges. Value Points: an outstanding automaton with most intricate and astonishing movements, six tunes, great rarity and wonderful state of preservation.

Standing upon a velvet-covered platform with screen background is a clown with paper mache head and artistically-painted facial features, blue glass eyes, upper and lower mohair lashes, red-tipped nose, closed mouth with broad smile, teeth, tuft of hair at crown, paper mache body with posed legs and uniquely-sculpted hands, wearing his original silk costume with decorative silver paper stars, holding a large paper fan in front of his face, A gilt pedestal is at his side, upon which is resting a large lightwood die-cube. When wound, the clown nods to his audience, then raises the fan to cover his face. When the fan is lowered, his head has disappeared! Almost immediately the lid raises on the die-cube and a head (presumably the same, but a duplicate) emerges. Then that head lowers back and the lid closes, he lifts his fan and lowers it, and his head has re-appeared. Two tunes play. Condition: generally excellent, music and motion function well. Comments: Phalibois, circa 1890. Value Points: the delighted expression on the artfully-sculpted and painted clown enhances the endlessly amusing illusion of the well-preserved automaton with original costume and accessories.

Fabulous French Musical Automaton " On the Way to the Market, Attributed to Vichy 4000/6500

13" (33 cm.) h. 12" x 10". A beautifully-created country-side scene with textured-ground and painted finish depicting a path with bridge crossing a small stream. Standing upon the path is a paper mache donkey with painted features and harness, upon which is side-seated a bisque doll with cobalt blue eyes, painted features, closed mouth, blonde mohair wig, and superb original costume, alongside her woven basket with feathered silk flowers. The donkey is stalled at a wooden bridge, apparently frightened to cross it, especially since a little chenille dog is posed jumping at him from the other side. When wound, music plays, and the little girl nods his head forward and back, pulls the reins, and smacks the donkey's side, urging him forward. Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well and charmingly. Comments: Vichy, circa 1880. Value Points: beautifully-preserved automaton with gorgeous doll, amusing scene and action, very rare.

A rich oil painting on board depicts two fashionable young girls in a park-like setting with an arrangement of little houses and trees that they are arranging in a village scene; one tree has tipped over and one little girl is daintily holding her skirt as leans to right the tree. The tiny scene is remarkable for its detail of costumes, fabrics, facial expressions, and even architectural details of the toy houses. The artist, Luigi Loir, has lettered the name of his scene, "Un Village", in the lower corner. The French artist, Luigi Loir, whose genre paintings of Paris street scenes, earned him a Medaille d'Or at the 1889 Paris International Exposition, created a series of these superb miniature paintings of children with their toys and dolls.

A rounded wooden base designed to appear as though a street corners features a pole-mounted thermometer in front of which is standing a man with highly-characterized paper mache head, glass eyes, large nose, beaming smile with teeth, mohair wig, hat, original silk costume disguising the segmented torso and legs, bisque hands holding pince-nez and cane. When wound, and lever released, the man lifts his pince-nez to his uplifted face and stares in amazement at the thermometer as he watches the temperature rising (it actually does!). As the temperature continues to rise, so does he. First, his legs stretch, then his torso, and finally his head until he is twice his original size. Tapping his cane, he sees the temperature abruptly drop, and then, so does his height. Music accompanies the humorous scene. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Marks: Depose (base). Value Points: a most inventive and amusing automaton, with rare depose stamp indicating its importance to the maker, with intricate synchronized movements.

The shed is of lightwood with dark lacquered finish and applique slats and trim, and has three windmill blades, the whole arranged on a wooden platform is moss and flowers. The back of the windmill shed has an open top from which protrudes a silk candy bag with drawstring closure. Excellent condition, a curious but charming vignette of folk art quality, well-preserved. A heavy card stock presentation card has decorative paper-brick border to match the hearth brick, and offers an incredible display of paper mache foods and delicacies, along with a heard, wooden bin, pots and pans, wooden tools, and a bisque-head chef with painted facial features, closed mouth, brunette human hair wig, and five-piece paper mache body, wearing chef's uniform (the doll is marked "Masson, Lorraine A.L.&C0 No.0 Limoges" for Lanternier). In pristine unplayed with condition, the presentation displays were popular as Etrennes gifts during the early 20th century, and toy and department stores vied with each other in preparing the most dramatic and eye-catching examples. This rare set offers wonderful breads, desserts, tarts, quiches, ham loafs, and more, along with the bisque-head chef. Circa 1915.

He has cymbals in his hands, a cymbal at his back that clangs with a cymbal atop the drop, and a wooden ball clacker that is designed to beat against the drum on his back. A box-shaped miniature post office of heavy card stock has lithographed-paper cover to simulate wood and brick; when closed, there are two walls with posters advertising actual toys of the season (presumably, from the same firm which made the post office, signed N.K. on the posters) including a magic game and a construction set; and there are two mail slots. When opened, the "Poste" becomes a very busy and active scene with ability to send telegrams or letters and such. Additionally, the Poste serves as a kiosk for daily journals and included are several dozen miniature daily newspapers including such curiosities as "Les Poupees Parlante" which is actually a description of the new and miraculous talking bebe of Edison!. The set is preserved in remarkable original condition, including original cloth awnings. French, circa 1900, Nicolas and Keller.

Very Rare American Wooden Doll Furniture attributed to George LeClerc with Tynietoy Lineage 1200/160

17" (43 cm.) h. secretary desk. The nicely-made furnishings depicting various style including American colonial and Craftsman are in the style of Tynietoy, but twice their scale, suitably sized for display with dolls about 10". Each piece has original finish and fine details of craftsmanship; including secretary desk, Hepplewhite-style glass-top cabinet, wing chair with chintz upholstery, pedestal table, three different side chairs each with upholstered seats, dining table and a Craftsman-style set comprising settee and three chairs with leather seats and library table. The craftsman and furniture designer, George Henri LeClerc, had worked at, and presumably designed, many of the early Tynietoy dollhouse furnishings during the 1920s/1930s; after his departure from the firm in 1938 he continued creating nearly identical furniture models on his own, and, notably, created some models in this larger scale. The pieces are unsigned, excellent condition, and very rare to find.
