Irish Army Model 1927 "Vickers" Helmet Lot #60 (Sale Order 61 of 252) In 1926 it was decided to equip the Irish Army with a steel helmet due to the lessons learned in the Great War. Rather than adopt the British helmet which would have had bad memories for many people in Ireland as it had only been 4 years since the War Of Independance, it was decided to go for something different. The Ministry of Defence decided to use something similar to the German-style helmet of WWI shown to be vastly superior protection to other helmets. Due to the restrictions imposed by the Versailles treaty, the contract was given to produce helmets to the Vickers company of Great Britain, with 10,021 helmets produced. The 'Vickers' or M1927 helmet remained in service until 1940 when it was replaced by the MkII British helmet. In 1940, after the outbreak of WW2, several thousand helmets were painted white and issued to the civil authorities. More recently, the Irish army crushed and bulldozed about 4,000 helmets into the ground during a construction project.
The Vickers helmet is now quite scarce and many worldwide helmet collectors are trying to obtain them. This helmet is complete with Irish made liner and chinstrap, and though a little rough in places is in overall very good condition. Recent examples have brought over $1000!

Confederate Civil War Austrian Lorenz .58 Caliber Battlefield Relic Musket & Bayonet Lot #109 (Sale Order 110 of 252) This possibly Confederate used Civil War era Austrian import Lorenz .58 Caliber Musket & Bayonet was reportedly picked up off one of the battlefields outside Suffolk, Va after the war. It is in reasonably good condition considering it lay on the ground for a couple of years after the war - one side is rougher than the other. We have not tried to remove the bayonet, as it has been on the rifle since it was dropped so long ago. We think is is Confederate as the South carried these longarms during the Gen Longstreet's Seige of Suffolk. A nice piece of history from nearly 150 years ago.
