Scarce Racing Pennant. 24" long.

Lot #1087 (Sale Order 1087 of 539)

Fairmount Park circa 1908-1911. For four years, early in the last century, the Fairmount Park Motor Races were run on an eight-mile course in Philadelphia’s West Fairmount Park. They drew half a million spectators the first year, butsurprisingly they have been overlooked as part of automobile racing history and as part of the history of Philadelphia. In contrast to other racing events, such as the Vanderbilt Cup, there were never any serious injuries and not a singledeath, but after four years of spectacular racing, the event was banned, with safety concerns cited. Indianapolis 500. Pennant-Banner.

Lot #1097 (Sale Order 1097 of 539)

This Pennant/Banner is attributed to the first Indy 500 Race in 1911 and according to the information received by the consignor from Clark; this hung from the Race Course for the first race. Green Gauze material is fragile and in partsmissing. The White Lettering says "IMS" in a winged emblem with the word "Speedway". Two metal grommets seem to verify that this was not a souvenir pennant but rather a hanging pennant made to hold through windy weather. Great piece ofRacing History. 45 1/2" length also indicates a functional piece rather than a souvenir. Any material from the First Indy Race is extremely desirable and scarce. This and other material in this sale was originally from the Long Islandmuseum. Indianapolis 500 First Race Worn Uniform

Lot #1098 (Sale Order 1098 of 539)

Attributed to Lewis Strang. the Case Lettered Uniform shows all the signs of wear and tear you would expect from a worn racing coverall. Label in uniform is from H. L. Sanders the Nation's most prosperous uniform maker. the case lettering has a pink tinge probably from washing with a red dyed item, quite possibly one of the two race caps that accompanies the uniform. A photographic image of strang wearing this uniform in a photo before the race almost perfectly matches the uniformlettering shapes, sizing and placement on the uniform. I say almost because the lettering appears to be a bit more elongated, again quite possibly from multiple washings. "The Indianapolis Motor Speedway received the first-ever entry forthe Indianapolis 500 on Oct. 22, 1910, a Case entered by the J.I. Case Threshing Machine Co. of Racine, Wis., to be driven by Lewis Strang. The entry fee for the inaugural race was $500, which equals about $11,600 at 2009 U.S. currency rates.Track official T.E. “Pop” Myers wrote Strang’s name into a ledger to signify the first entry, and history was made." The uniform is accompanied by it's original buttons with one replaced and two racing hats of
