Condition: generally excellent, tiny paint rub high on forehead. Marks: Depose E. 11 J. (and artist checkmarks on head) Jumeau Medaille d'Or Paris (body). Comments: Emile Jumeau, his refined deposed model of signature bebe, circa 1884, made for one or two years only. Very Rare French Bisque Portrait Doll as Marquis by Van Rozen 6000/8500

15" (38 cm.) Bisque socket head with distinctive angular features, strong chin and nose, narrow brown glass deeply-inset eyes that give prominence to the modeling that surrounds the eyes, short painted fringed lashes, thickly-fringed arched brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth, accented lips, well-sculpted ears, blonde human hair wig, French composition and wooden fully-jointed body, silk Marquis costume and bicorn hat, stockings, leather shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Van Rozen France Depose (raised lettering). Comments: the Belgian-born Parisian sculptor, Jeanne Desboutin, whose works were created under the name Van Rozen and who, was most noted for her bronze sculptures of animals, created a small series of doll heads whose sculpting and texture is so distinctive that they appear to be actually hand-sculpted by the artist herself. Few examples are known to exist. Value Points: extremely rare and captivating doll with artist's signature, wonderful costume, this actual doll is shown in The Encyclopedia of French Dolls by Theimer, page 633.

French Wooden Chaise a Porteur with Rare Carving and Bronze Trim 1200/1800

An exceptional chaise, a porteur (sedan chair) of rich mahogany with rosewood trim and burled walnut veneers has bombe roof, rich carving around the windows, two lower drawers, and a front opening door for access to the velvet lined interior with bronze-edged shelves. There is elaborate carving overall, bronze carrying rods, and fancy bronze hardware. Excellent condition. Mid-19th century, superb quality.

Bisque head with flanged neck, elongated face with very plump cheeks, large blue glass sleep eyes with unusual eye mechanism. dark eyeliner, curly painted lashes, tinted brows, rounded nose, closed mouth with pertly-shaped accented lips, blonde curly mohair wig, muslin torso, composition lower arms and legs, pretty antique dress, undergarments, flowered bonnet. Condition: generally excellent, some craquelure on composition of arms and legs. Marks: Copr, by Grace C. Rockwell Germany 1392/40. Comments: Germany, circa 1925, from a series of American artist-designed dolls, commissioned by the Borgfeldt firm from German doll makers; the series included works by women artists including Drayton, Putnam, Averill, Helen Jensen and Orsini. The Rockwell doll was made with both sculpted and wigged hair, and is likely her model marketed as "Betty Jean" and later copyrighted as "Pretty Peggy". Value Points: very rare model with wonderful expression, rare original eyes, highest-quality of bisque and painting.

Bisque socket head with plump facial modeling, small blue glass sleep eyes, painted curly lashes, short feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, slightly-parted lips with tentative smile, outlined lips, four porcelain upper teeth, blonde mohair wig, five-piece toddler body, beautifully-costumed in pale yellow cotton dress with rows of lace trim and collar, undergarments, ruffled cap, shoes and socks. Condition: generally excellent. original body and body finish, one finger tip chipped. Marks: Porzellanfabrik Burggrub Princess Elizabeth 6 Made in Germany. Comments: portrait doll of Princess Elizabeth at the age of three, from an original design by sculptor, Caesar Schneider, commissioned by Schoneau and Hoffmeister for the task, and authorized by the British royal family. The doll was made in three sizes, this being the largest, but was sold for two years only, 1931-1933. The story is told in German Doll Studies by Cieslik, page 309. The cast metal frame with spiral-twist design forming an oval in which a pivoting fire-screen is enclosed, has a matching spiral-twist pedestal and four legs; the metal has gilded finish with aged patina, and the firescreen is of richly-embroidered padded velvet. The screen was designed to allow the insert to be turned side-to-side as needed, to offer control of the heat from the fireplace. French, from the illustrious firm of Huret, circa 1865.

37" (94 cm.) h. 22" base. Arranged upon a red velvet covered wooden base is an elegant lady seated at a piano-harp. She has a bisque portrait head with brown paperweight inset eyes, thick dark eyeliner, painted lashes, rose-blushed eye shadow, brush-stroked and feathered brows, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with beautifully-shaped outlined lips, separately-modeled pierced ears, paper mache shoulder plate designed to allow "breathing", carton torso and legs in seated pose with glued-on stockings and heeled shoes, bisque forearms with exquisite hands, wearing elaborate and elegant silk and lace costume with pearl jewelry. The piano-harp is painted pale yellow with gold-leaf painted carved borders and decorative painted colorful flowers, and has surmounting harp and sheet music rack. When the automaton is wound and lever released, the lady moves her hands across the top of the keyboard as though performing, turns her head, and "breathes" as though in awe of her own beautiful music. Four tunes play. Condition: generally excellent, early and fine restoration of painting and costume with antique fabrics and materials, mechanism and music function well. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau 10 (and artist checkmarks on head). Comments: Vichy, the model appeared in the firm's catalog described as "Piano Watteau", catalog number 466, and was designated as a deposed model by the firm, circa 1888. Value Points: extremely rare luxury quality automaton with splendid bisque portrait face, compelling presence and movements including breathing, very beautiful presentation.

French Barrel Organ with Monkey Marquis Violinist by Thibouville-Lamy 3000/5000

A fine walnut case with dove-tailed construction contains a barrel organ that operates by turning the crank at the back, causing music to play, and the monkey with hand-painted paper mache head, amber glass eyes, and hinged jaw, to "play". He moves his head in a realistic manner, finally nestling it into the violin as he begins to strum; meanwhile his eyes open very wide and then flutter closed, and while his jaw slightly opens and closes. The monkey is seated upon a velvet cushion, wearing a vintage costume of silk and velvet, holding his original violin and bow. His music stand is in front, and violin case and his Marquis hat are on the floor. Excellent condition, well-functioning. French, Thibouville-Lamy, circa 1875.

A woven basket with an exuberant arrangement of flowers constructed of hand-painted tiny seashells, with garland-trimmed handle, is preserved under its original glass dome on a wooden base. A wide variety of flowers are shown, each with remarkable verisimilitude. Excellent condition. French, circa 1880, wonderful creations of seashell art were created in fishing villages of Normandy and Brittany during the winter months; this example is especially artful.

Guillaume, the artist, was preeminent in poster art during the 1890 Belle Epoque, and like other artists of his era such as Poulbot and Marque, used his talents to design dolls that aided in the preservation of French culture. Arranged upon a velvet-covered base are two bisque-head figures, including the lady astronomer, and her little pupil, each with paperweight eyes, painted features, and closed mouth, She is holding a teaching rod in her hand, and he is standing in front of a wooden telescope. When wound, music plays and the astronomer alternately turns her head, instructs by moving the teaching wand, and then lifts her left hand up and down as though calling for the pupil's attention. Meanwhile, he leans forward and back as though peering into the telescope. Music plays. Condition: generally excellent, base of telescope has been re-attached, mechanism and music function well. Comments: Roullet et Decamps, the automaton appeared in the firms's catalog as #264 named "Astronome", circa 1890. Value Points: rare and delightful mechanical automaton, the dolls (one by Jumeau, one by Gaultier) are wearing luxurious silk costumes with rich gilt decorations.

When wound, if working, the scene becomes animated, the deserter moving back and forth, the priest praying, and so forth, while music plays. The scene is labeled "Court Martial" on the lower edge. Condition: generally excellent, chip at upper torso, but otherwise unplayed with and virtually mint. Comments: Japanese, the traditional play doll known as Ichimatsu, circa 1930s; the traditional of sending costumed dolls known as Friendship Dolls was initiated in the 1920s with a series of 32" dolls representing various Japanese regions; this example follows that tradition in a smaller size. Value Points: The doll is presented in her original wooden box with Japanese lettering, along with four beautifully-made kimonos and with various other handmade blankets, shoes, and toys. A paper signed included with the box reads "Work done by children 7 to 12 years of age, pupils of Fujisawa Grammar School Fujisawa, Japan".

16" (41 cm.) x 12". A shadowbox vignette with wooden and gilded frame presents a charming multi-dimensional scene of three dancing kittens posed alongside their violin-playing Papa cat. When wound, the kittens should dance about, while Papa's hinged arm plays the violin. The movement and music mechanisms are accessible from a sliding wooden lid at the back and the original store label of "Au Nain Bleu" appears there. Mechanisms appear intact, but need minor adjustment. Circa 1890, a delightful frivolity from the favored Parisian doll and toy boutique, known for its unique offerings throughout the 19th century.

Rare American Wooden "Kitten in Shoe" Toy Cart by S.A. Smith of Vermont 800/1300

12" (30 cm.) The wooden cart with die-cut sides in the shape of a wide-eyed kitten seated in a high-top shoe has chip-carved details and painted green and black trim, with two large green wooden spoked wheels at the sides and a cast iron brace. The underside is stamped "Made by the S.A. Smith Mfg. Co. Brattleboro Vt, U.S.A." Excellent condition. The wooden toy manufacturing firm was established in the late 19th century by Sanford Smith in Brattleboro, Vermont where wood supply and wood-working craftsman were in great supply. A wide variety of carts, wagons, toy animals and similar toys were made including one toy similar to this present example, being a "cat and mouse" wheelbarrow. The firm continued to make toys under the family name into the 1920s.

American Circus Toy "Clever Clowns" in Original Box 400/700

22" (56 cm.) l. x 16"d. x 31"h. assembled. The wooden base with grout finish to simulate circus saw dust has red and white striped canvas circus tent with banner name "Clever Clowns"; the tent is surmounted by three Clever Clown flags. Red support poles hold rings, balancing bars and acrobatic bars designed for play with the 15 cast metal clowns that are included. The clowns are ingeniously designed to link together or to attach to the acrobatic equipment. Excellent condition, original finish. The set is preserved in its original colorful box labeled Clever Clowns, with the name of the manufacturer, Greycraft of Mount Joy, Pa, and the words "Patent pending". Circa 1925, the Pennsylvania firm made a variety of cast iron toys including toy stoves and toy tool chest with tools, as well as this imaginative circus, inspired by the popular Schoenhut circus, but utilizing cast iron figures which were their specialty.

Each of six different hand puppets has hand-sculpted head with textured finish depicting a different character from Chinese theatre, with uniquely-sculpted features on each including hair, moustache, eye expression, and mouth, each with amber-tinted complexion, and each with its original cloth hand-puppet costume. Condition: generally excellent, costume worn away on one, original painting well preserved on all, costumes well-preserved on five. Marks: WPA Museum Extension Project (stamp on costumes of four). Comments: circa 1930s, created as an aspect of the Depression Era Works Progress from which some of America's most beautiful highways and bridges were built, and in which artists and writers were given projects to preserved American folk arts and customs; this set of perfectly-preserved hand puppets is one example of that work. The lithographed poster depicts 22 colorful scenes of Schoenhut clowns, donkeys and elephants in playful scenes, the aim being to show all the play possibilities that the simple wooden toys presented. The poster promised that the Humpty Dumpty circus offer "trained animals, continuous perfomance, 10,001 New Tricks". The poster is dated and copyrighted 1903. Excellent condition, vibrant colors, original 4 fold lines barely visible, frramed. Circa 1903, few examples of this beautiful poster are known to exist.

The blue-painted circus tent floor has red center ring, and blue poles that support a canvas center labeled Humpty-Dumpty Circus, with garlands of flags of all nations, back entry way with red cotton draperies, and suspended metal rings and bars for acrobatic performances. Performers include three clowns, lady acrobat, and lion tamer. Animals include poodle with carved cane, leopard, dappled horse, elephant, and brown horse with carved mane, all with painted eyes. Accessories include two ladders, two chairs, two balls, three barrels, five various colorful stools, whip, and hoop. Excellent condition, some wear to costumes. American, Schoenhut, circa1927. the smaller size circus, known as reduced size, was introduced in 1923, designed to accommodate the play of young toddlers; various animals were added to the line over the next several years.

Condition: generally excellent, some firing spots on shoulder plate, Comments: Simon and Halbig, circa 1900, the exhibition head was displayed in German health spas, alongside the following lot, #233, to demonstrate the look of a healthy woman after attending the spa. The red wooden racing car with black stenciled designs, black faux-headlights, yellow wheels, houses the wooden head and torso of Felix, with hinged arms, leather ears, painted features, who appears to be seated in the car, ready for racing. A simple bellows mechanism on the underside, causes Felix to bounce up and down when the car propels along. The front of the car is labeled "Speedy Felix", and a Pat Sullivan copyright 1924 label appears at the back. Very good/excellent condition, very play scuffs. Schoenhut, circa 1920s.

36" (91 cm.) handle, 8" figure. A finely-polished wooden handle supports a carved wooden figure of man in golfing costume, posed as though about to swing at the golf ball, golf club in his hands. When metal lever is the handle is pushed, it causes the man to swing at the ball (included). Excellent condition, original finish is well-preserved. Schoenhut, circa 1925, the toy was made for a few years only, patented 1922, according to the original silver Schoenhut brass plate on the handle, and the painting of features and costumes is particularly artistic and well-preserved on the early toy.
