“Untitled” Mixed media on paper, 12” x 11” by Ania Gola-Kumor

Lot #7 (Sale Order 7 of 97)

Ania’s artist statement says that creating is a very personal and complicated process for her, related to her heart, brain, intuition, experiences and memory. It reflects her state of mind. She is painting out of the need to give form to her emotions, express issues that she is exploring and verify something that she never quite realizes until she is satisfied with the results of her work. Ania’s painting process is about balance between spontaneity and control, intended and serendipitous. In creating a good picture honesty is very important to feel vulnerable and bold at the same time. Ania is widely shown and publicized in Denver art scene and internationally. She is represented by Sandra Philips Gallery and has been a professor at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design for last 14 years. Go to http://rmcad.digication.com/ania/Welcome/published

"Charles" Oil, Charcoal and Conte on Canvas, 30” x 24” by Melinda Kern

Lot #10 (Sale Order 10 of 97)

Having recently moved to the US from Sussex in England, Melinda is currently studying at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and design, for her BFA. Her educational career, which encouraged the development of the individual, has had a profound influence on the work I am currently producing. As a result I am extremely interested in the idea of identity and the significance of relationships between individuals. On a larger scale, the experience of moving, and the distance created between the countries and cultures I am used to, has lead me to explore these relationships in connection to society. I seek to define the various perspectives and emotions that we come into contact with as a result of our different lifestyles, as well as the cultures, in which we chose to live. Melinda was a recipient of a Philip J. Steele Arts Education Foundation Scholarship Award during this past year.

“Overpass 12, 2004” Oil, charcoal and colored pencil on paper, 30"W x 22"H) by Kevin Oehler

Lot #18 (Sale Order 18 of 97)

My approach to art making has been nothing if not wildly eclectic. Educated in the U.S. and the U.K., I have been been affiliated with Robischon Gallery in Denver, Desson Saunders Gallery in Chicago, and Morely Gallery in London. I've created large public art installations, including "Jade Spire" and "Union Spire" in Denver, "Flood of '65" in Littleton, CO, and "Evansville Gateway" along the Ohio River. In the 90's I was a Production Designer in Los Angeles designing film sets for stage and location. More recently, I've been designing natural and cultural history experiences and exhibits for museums across the U.S. "Overpass 12" was selected from a series of 50 or so drawings made in Los Angeles from 2000 to 2004. Based on photographs of freeway overpasses taken at sunrise, these drawings imagine remnant, crumbling highway architecture as icons of man-made landscape, persisting into a dystopic future, and outlasting the culture that created them.

“7 8.8.11 “7 8.8.11

“7 8.8.11" Acrylic on Canvas with Sharpie Marker, 30” x 15” by Reid Palmer

Lot #22 (Sale Order 22 of 97)

Reid’s paintings tend to deal with more abstract ideas and emotions that are harder to describe and pinpoint. Although they are of "nothing" they are representations of the ideas and emotions that go into creating them. He injects thoughts and feelings into them during the creative process, most of which is painted over, and those ideas simply become part of the final piece. Usually while Reid is working on one of these abstract pieces he works on a cartoonish piece as well,. His aim for his painting is to create works that are aesthetically pleasing while perhaps raising some thought within the viewer based on the title of the piece, which tends to be the premise or idea from which the piece originated. Lot #23 (Sale Order 23 of 97)

Over the past three decades, this renowned Colorado metal sculptor has made his mark on the national and international art scene. With a unique style and consummate welding quality that have defined and differentiated his work, Kevin’s sculptures are not created according to a set plan. The placement of each element is an answer to a question of relationships, which he discovers as the work is in progress. His sculptures range from monumental, to garden size, and table top sized. Today, Kevin continues to create his magnificent works even after suffering a massive stroke in 2004. Although he has been challenged physically, his ideas remain free flowing and his commitment to quality is as high as ever – with a resolve that offers a physical testament to the dedication, expertise, and amazing recovery of this remarkable artist. His works can be seen at CODA Gallery, Palm Desert, CA; Janine’s Contemporary, Santa Fe, NM; Dean Day Gallery, Houston, TX; Kodner Gallery, St. Louis, MO. Go to www.kevinrobb.com

Johns images are examples of possibility within the realm of the impossible. He utilizes the psychology inherent in the photographic medium to attain a surreal world for the performance of his ideas. Allegorical story lines are established through the formal use of association, metaphor, symbol, icon and archtype that are to be found in the attributes and relationships of the visual elements. The formal structure in John’s work is of tantamount importance in presenting a proposition for the viewer to interpret. He uses aesthetics of classical beauty to seduce the viewer into places where they may not otherwise go. The computer enables him to materialize any fantasy and tweak any reality to be precisely as he envisions it. Although John’s work is surreal in nature, it is more correctly placed in the movement of “Magic Realism”, which is less coincidental and not a fantasy set in the unreal. Magic Realism is an artistic genre in which everyday elements appear magical in an otherwise realistic setting. In a fusion between physical and psychological states, mundane elements are endowed with deeper meaning while staying grounded in physical reality. John’s style relies on the psychological assumptions that are the inherent nature of photography - the assumption that photographic reality is a representation depicting what was in front of the camera and therefore true in some way. Art at its best does not simply please the eye but activates the thinking process to ponder, wonder, emote, relate and somehow cause an experience to take place effecting our constant state of flux and growth in some way as we progress on our journey through life. "Geometry" Acrylic on Clay Board, 9”x12” ,10"x13" framed by Richard Morhous

Lot #35 (Sale Order 35 of 97)

Richard was born in Yankton S. Dakota in 1945. After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Washington in 1970, he spent three years teaching art in Melbourne Australia. Originally influenced by the German Expressionists, by 1985 his color sense and style were uniquely his own. In the early 1990s he transitioned from oils and chalk pastels to water-based media, mainly acrylic, as well as watercolor and gouache. “His forceful, upbeat and playful (but utterly resolved) style utilizes some Expressionistic elements, but it is also couched in the same verve and ironic humor as the work of Philip Guston." -Ted Lindberg - Alaska Airlines Magazine Go to http://www.lisaharrisgallery.com/artists/morhous.php

“Untitled,” Acrylic Paint, 12” x 16” by Gregory Hayes “Untitled,” Acrylic Paint, 12” x 16” by Gregory Hayes

“Untitled,” Acrylic Paint, 12” x 16” by Gregory Hayes

Lot #36 (Sale Order 36 of 97)

Most of this is about the paint, about trying to control it. But paint has its properties, a life of its own. Trying to understand how it will behave becomes scientific; making an attempt is the only way to know. Through these attempts Gregory gains an understanding that he then tries to communicate. He is saying something with the paint. As a painter this is his voice. The piece “Untitled” was created by pouring acrylic paint on to a piece of glass in 12in x 1/4in lines of various colors; then peeled up once it is dry. From there Gregory wove together the strings of paint into a painting. Go to www.brooklynartproject.com

“Spring Sun” Mixed Media, 15” x 17” by Craig Steele

Lot #39 (Sale Order 39 of 97)

Embellished memories along with an old black and white photo filled in as the muses for this painting. A view from the back of the old frame house I lived in nearly forty years ago encouraged me to recall various sights and sounds along with pleasant odors ranging from the random splotch of sweet grass to that welcoming harbinger of spring, the lilac. Had it been possible to depict the sound of the dilapidated frame of the screen door I'd have done so. The manner in which the sun filtered its way thru the branches and leaves seemed to always be in a state of flux not unlike the way water and waves weave their way over rocks in a stream. Lot #40 (Sale Order 40 of 97)

With a penchant for using the most common materials in quasi-unadulterated ways, John has created a magnificent sculptural oeuvre full of art-historical reference points that take time to be revealed. Widely acknowledged as the extreme of contemporary thought, the artist has rapidly gained acceptance in the public sphere, his work inspiring both awe and applause in equal measures. In the past five years, John has realized five major public art commissions in Denver, including one of the focal installations at the Colorado Convention Center and an installation of multiple elements at the Omar D. Blair Charter School. Commissioned by the city of Denver, McEnroe installed one of the most visible and striking works in the city’s collection to date at the Highlands Bridge. "Surrender" Oil, 49” x 61” by Irene Delka McCray

Lot #41 (Sale Order 41 of 97)

Irene’s paintings and drawings have always been set in the psychic realm, foregrounded with various themes of emotional challenge and internal contradiction. Though it evolves and varies slightly, a continuous theme is the dual nature of humanity, the necessary pact we have between connection to the other and being lone persons, individualized and apart. The work has led to absorption in such subjects as death, actual and metaphorical, addictamania, dreams, sensuality, and fantasy, all experiences where ordinary human consciousness is altered. It is there in the nether reaches that we open to the immediacy of life and the truth of the nature of being. Her consideration of these concepts is in a spirit of compassion and awe for the fierce mysteries of human existence. Go to www.delkamccray.com

"Untitled" Bronze, 14” x3.5” x4”, Courtesy of Goodwin Fine Art in Denver, CO by Yoshitomo Saito

Lot #45 (Sale Order 45 of 97)

Yoshitomo produces quiet yet highly intelligent bronze objects. In the past two decades, Saito has made investigations over the image of skin through natural forms like tree barks and sea kelps, or man-made forms such as boxes, pillows, cardboard panels and painter’s canvases. His interest in skin however is not about presenting pretty surface textures but reexamining the meaning of surface appearance in natural as well as in our social economical cultural phenomena. Originally from Tokyo, Saito came to the US in 1983. His works are in numerous important public collections including the M.H. de Young Museum of San Francisco, the Oakland Museum of California, and the Hawaii State Foundation of Cultures & Arts. "Perpetual Perishing" Dimensional Drawing: Mixed Media, 8 3/4"h x 15 3/4"w x 1"d by Charles Parson

Lot #46 (Sale Order 46 of 97)

In the 60 plus one person exhibits that the artist has presented throughout the United States his work has always focused on Connections. In this particular series, Still and Centered Point the initial work is developed in sketches using sight observation of the panoramic vista sites of the southern Colorado region. This particular work takes this sight observation as a point of departure and transposes it into what the artist believes is a broader abstract visual language, also utilizing industrial/architectural materials in collage form. The circular rings address shifts in time and portrays generational placements. The focus is the central circular form, a lens of sorts. This circular framed space and time is a metaphor juxtaposed on the western horizon, hopefully connecting the viewer with the poetics of this particular moment. Go to www.charlesparson.com

"California 2" Graphite on Paper. 26" x 36" by Peter Reichardt

Lot #49 (Sale Order 49 of 97)

Peter is a native of central Texas and received his BFA from The Cleveland Institute of Art and MFA from Washington State University. His work has been exhibited across the United States, and he is the recipient of the 2010 Critics Table Art Award for Best Work of Art: Installation for his collaborative effort in the Ideas of Mountains exhibition at The Creative Research Lab in Austin, TX. He teaches in the Visual Arts Department at South Dakota State University, Brookings SD. California 2 is a graphite drawing on paper depicting the landscape in Yosemite National Park. The center of the source image has visual information removed creating a void within the landscape that overpowers the peaceful scene. The void shape has several functions: it serves as a compositional device in defiance with the traditions of landscape art, it acts as a formal device to subvert the illusion of pictorial space, and it conceptually stands in for the disconnect we experience in the landscape between reality and constructed knowledge. "Trabajando con la Azada" Pastel, 8” x 12” by Anthony Ortega

Lot #50 (Sale Order 50 of 97)

Anthony’s artwork reflects the Latino experience through individual slices of life of the community, family, and other sectors of urban and rural society. The collective is the primary focus in all his work. Individuals in his artwork are faceless because they are important only to the extent that they help define the group-the community interacting and participating in its many rituals, social settings, and group functions. Through his work, Anthony offers a multifaceted fiction that incorporates the traditions, history and culture of Latinos. In the postmodern age, his visual language speaks to the issue of international migration, focuses on shifting demographics, draws from pop culture and seeks to present truth at a more local, personal level. “Christopher Phelps” Acrylic on Canvas, 11” x 14", Image courtesy of PLUS Gallery

Lot #52 (Sale Order 52 of 97)

Few artists have made as immediate and forceful an impact in the visual arts as Colorado painter Xi Zhang. Zhang arrived in Denver in his late teens, with limited English but an extremely high proficiency in art, his father one of the top calligraphers in China, who immersed his son in the arts from day one. His painting quickly grew more bold and exciting, and he received resounding praise almost immediately upon entering the exhibition market in Denver: His premier 2008 debut solo exhibition, “12921,” garnering him the coveted “Emerging artist of the year” recognition by The Denver Post. He also acquired a wide fan-base amongst contemporary collectors in the city. The platform that Zhang’s work springs from is particularly relevant to someone from such a charged cultural context as China, the notoriety of contemporary art from the country vastly surpassing the actual freedom that is still limited by the government. Yet Xi’s work is so much about painting and the ability to formulate a stimulating concept through elaborate techniques. Go to www.xizhang.org

"Experiment at Work #1" Photograph, 8" x 10” by Justin Beard

Lot #54 (Sale Order 54 of 97)

Justin would consider himself a conceptual artist. Conceptual means idea. He first starts with an idea and tries to build the work around it. The tools that he has found best in dealing with this for him has been sculpture, installation, performance and video. His ideal work environment could be anywhere. He loves serendipitous discovery, meaning that he loves it when he just stumbles on things that spark ideas. In order for this to happen he needs to be out and about participating with the world. Not only does it help him get ideas but also it helps him find solutions to ideas. He is influenced by a lot of people. Some visual artists that come to mind are people like, Bruce Nauman, Chris Burden, Robert Rauschenberg, and Charles Ray. I love these people because they allowed themselves to work in such a wide variety of mediums. Go to www.illiteraremagazine.com/features/40

“Blossoms of Rebirth" Monotype, 16" x 20" framed by Catherine Dixon (#1 of 2)

Lot #57 (Sale Order 57 of 97)

Catherine's abstractions, both in paintings and in monotypes, reflect her fascination with the mystical and archetypal. As a philosopher, she has long been interested in Aesthetics, Art History, Jungian Psychology, and Spirituality. Her early art training was in landscape and still life, but Ms. Dixon is working now strictly with abstraction. She believes it is more challenging intellectually than portraying reality-based imagery. Abstract art also affords the viewer a more active role in the aesthetic experience. Each person brings something unique to their interpretation. Although primarily a painter, Ms. Dixon is an award winning printmaker as well. Go to http://www.CatherineDixonStudio.com

“Pikes” Black resin casts and fabric, each of 5 pieces is 80" H x 22" W x 9" D by Rebecca Vaughan

Lot #59 (Sale Order 59 of 97)

The primary inspirational source and content of Rebecca’s artwork has centered on gift economies and the cultural and biological methods by which we regulate and maintain our social relationships. Exploring as direct, as intimate a relationship to audience members as she can, she creates sculptural installations, conceptual performances and evolving relational projects. Often these include elements of gender-specific experiences. Rebecca’s intent is to explore the unique resonance between organisms and the manners in which they embody the concepts of distribution and networks. The flavor of the work is often manipulative and sentimental. Go to www.rebeccavaughan.com

“Autumn” Acrylic on canvas, 9" x 12" by Susan Koalenz

Lot #62 (Sale Order 62 of 97)

Susan grew up in a family of artists and started painting and drawing at a very young age. Her father, Phil Steele, was a well-established figure artist, illustrator, and teacher. The inspiration for Susan’s figurative works comes from impressions of everyday life, environment and personal experience. The works identify connections, whether they are obvious or subliminal. Her use of vivacious color, movement, and expression all play a role in conveying her image. Each person takes something a little different from the same picture and she is happy with that. “Blanket” Mixed Media, fabric, ink, pencil on paper by Sean Hudson

Lot #66 (Sale Order 66 of 97)

Currently, Sean is interested in the narrative of visual language. His work explores the use of pattern to create a distinct time and place. There is focus on the relationship of antique and modern. Sean’s process involves the interplay of expression and sensation. The concept is a starting point from which he can delve into the sensation of creating. Although he does not necessarily have a specific plan for what each piece will look like, he allows himself to absorb external information and he allows these thoughts to inform him during his process. Sean embraces spontaneity and intuition as much as the initial concept. Go to www.seanhudsonart.com

“Greed” Cast Aluminum, 6 “Greed” Cast Aluminum, 6

“Greed” Cast Aluminum, 6" x 6" x 3" by Jonathan Koalenz

Lot #73 (Sale Order 73 of 97)

Jonathan’s sculpture is cast aluminum that he recycled from an old bearing press. The hand and the rhino were cast separately using direct release techniques and lost wax methods. A specially mixed blend of plaster and silica was used for the investment and the polished finish was created with wet sanding and rubbing compounds and polishes. The title of the piece is a direct indictment of mankind's codependence with nature and the lack of responsibility we all share now.

“Note Cards” 13 Note Cards - blank, 12 different designs of original watercolors by Virginia Schick

Lot #74 (Sale Order 74 of 97)

Virginia was born in Lake Zurich, Illinois and moved to the foothills above Boulder 26 years ago. Her artwork sets her apart, as it captures her obvious love of life. She finds tremendous joy in experiencing both physical and emotional contact with life. She grew up, was educated, and went to work (like most of us.) However, life’s experiences and colors are brighter for Virginia. They’re intense. She more than sees things, she notices, focuses, and cares for details. Nothing in life is “ordinary” or dull for her. She is wild, free and as vividly alive as her art.

Lot #75 (Sale Order 75 of 97)

At the heart of Virginia’s work is the sensuality of nature. She sees and feels the world with incredible perception and depth. Through unrestrained use of vivid color, she expresses the essence of her own experiences. Her works exude a feeling of freedom to move, flow, and openly breathe with a passion for life. Her works embody the essence of the spirit. Both her figurative watercolors and her bird batiks combine pattern, pose, and rhythm in a voice, which releases the beauty in stillness, meditation, and instincts inside us: speaking to all who would listen.

“Summer Aspens” Ceramic, Acrylic, plexiglas, 18” x 11 ¼“ x 11 ¼” by Lisa Steele

Lot #80 (Sale Order 80 of 97)

Lisa’s work involves the sculptural interpretation of land forms. They are simplified and abstracted into fundamental shapes and elements to capture the essence and spirit of the place. Light and scale are emphasized in order to give the viewer a feeling of being dwarfed by the landscape. Both color and texture are important elements. Each piece is made by hand using a variety of methods of hand building. The clay is then fired and finished with a variety of mixed media and techniques. A major element of my work is the use of light and the way that the changing light affects the piece of sculpture, just as changing light affects the landscape itself. Lisa serves on the Board of the Philip J. Steele Arts Education Foundation.

“Synonomy” Mixed Media, 16 ¼ x 14 1/8 by Steve Steele

Lot #87 (Sale Order 87 of 97)

Steve’s art can be divided into three distinct areas: large-scale dimensional mixed-media works, large-scale installation projects, and small-scale mixed-media sculpture. The small mixed-media works represent a continuing exploration of meaning through the utilization of a wide array of dimensional media and objects. These include items ranging from natural materials to objects such as plastic toys and items which might ordinarily be thought of as trash. Additionally, individual works may incorporate visual, audio, tactile and olfactory phenomena or evoke memories of taste. The artist considers these works to be sensory experiments. The work attempts to alter the way we understand the meaning and context of the familiar, from coat hooks and electrical outlets to portraiture and historical subjects. Meanings are twisted, humor and puns may be prevalent, and irony and absurdity can be important aspects. Steve serves on the Board of the Philip J. Steele Arts Education Foundation. Stan worked most of his life as an architectural designer and illustrator and only took up watercolor painting in 2009 to keep himself busy. He painted a variety of subjects for a couple of years learning the medium and looking for what he wanted to paint. In the spring of 2011 he fell in love with Iris. For Stan they have become like transcendent luminous beings, but nevertheless sensual and earthly, a product of the magic inherent in this world.
