Seated upon a wooden pedestal seat is a paper-mache headed clown or jester with glass inset eyes, white complexion with painted clown features, white fluffy mohair wig, carton torso, wire upper arms, bisque forearms, slender shaped legs bent at knees, one leg crossing the other, wearing silk and velvet jester costume, arranged on velvet covered wooden base with attached LB key and pull-lever. When wound, music (two tunes) plays and six movements occur: turning head side to side, nodding, then upper torso also bending, strumming of guitar, tongue moving in and out, and left leg moving up and down as though in time to the music. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Marks: LB (key). Comments: Leopold Lambert, the automaton appeared in the Lambert catalog as #43 "Clown a la Guitare", circa 1890. 27" (69 cm.) lady seated. 38" overall. Arranged upon a wooden platform is a paper mache headed lady seated at an elegant pianoforte. The lady has glass eyes, closed mouth with a row of painted teeth in gentle smiling expression, original white mohair wig, carton body w/separate chest form, paper mache hands w/elegantly posed fingers, modeled bent knees w/legs posed as though tapping foot pedals. The pianoforte w/harp has cream painted finish w/gilded decorations comprising a lyre-shaped foot-pedal frame, floral garlands & gilded ormulu mounts including 5 cherub figures & sprays of roses & berries. There is a music sheet rack w/antique miniature music sheet "Nous N'irons Plus au Bois", and foot pedals. The Vichy key pull-lever are at the side of the piano, & when wound, a succession of motions occur: the lady turns her head from side to side, nods, moves both hands across the keys in a realistic manner, & breathes (chest movement) as though delighted with her performance. Four tunes play. Condition: mechanism & movement function well & are entirely original, pianoforte has been repainted long ago, the woman's face has craquelure & some retouch (and would best be professionally restored), wig original, antique costume as shown in original Vichy catalog. Comments: Vichy, circa 1895, the automaton appeared in the Vichy catalog described as "Piano Watteau" and w/Vichy depose indication. Few examples of the model were ever made, & it is exceptionally rare. Some provenance of this piece is known: in the late 1930's a Frenchman, name unknown, escaped Paris, taking w/him some family treasures including Faberge spoons & the Piano Watteau automaton. He later sold the automaton to Mr. Sullivan, attache to General McArthur, as a gift for his wife Ruth, & by the end of WWII the Pianist was located in Honolulu. It remained in storage for more than four decades until sold at auction in 1984 to Adrian & Donna Mathes where it has remained until this time. Estimate: 18,000/30,000

A bisque-headed couple are posed in each others arms, in formal dance position, each with blue glass eyes, beautifully painted facial features, carton torso, paper mache legs and metal hands on man, bisque forearms on woman. Each doll has its original white mohair wig in very elaborate coiffure, and is wearing its original blue and ivory cream silk ballroom costume in the 1790 style, the woman with original pearl necklace and earrings, and silk floral arrangement in hair. The woman fits upon a metal cone "skirt" that contains mechanism, and is hidden by her silk skirt. When wound, the dolls twirl about, pause, reverse, repeat, and meanwhile the entire piece glides along on three wheeled-base. Excellent condition, mechanism functions well, bisque heads perfect, some restoration to woman's fingers. Two tune paper label is on base indicating "La Jolie Parfum" and "L'Espana Valse". A paper note, handwritten in 1959 and attached to the metal cone tells the provenance of the automaton, detailing that in 1880 "mon grand-pere Jules Boissier" brought some dolls from Paris to his six year old daughter Caroline, and notes that the piece had passed down in the family, to Isabelle, to Jules and to Noel until then. A gnarly wooden "tree" with green leaves is posed upon a moss-covered wood base, and playing in the tree are 20 German bisque Kewpies of various styles, sizes and activities including standing,Thinker, Huggers, Kewpie sweeper, Blunderboo, tumbling Kewpies, Kewpies with cats or chicks, and miniature Kewpies, and one in original silk bunting. The entire arrangement is preserved under a blown glass dome. Condition: two cats have broken tail tips, two others have minor flakes, all others excellent. Standing upon a velvet covered platform behind a cloth covered wooden table is a bisque-headed clown with highly characterized face, white complexion, and painted clown decorations of insects and butterflies, blue glass eyes, white mohair wig, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms and wearing original silk costume of rose and gold with ivory vest, leggings, silk shoes. He holds a wooden baton in his left hand and his right hand is balanced on a silver cone that sits on the table. When wound, the clown performs a series of movements: moving head from side to side as though seeking an audience, then nodding to begin the performance. He taps the cone three times with the baton, and lifts the cone with his right hand revealing a treasure beneath. He repeats the action, and each time a different treasure is revealed: a small pocket watch, a jeweled brooch, a silver trinket or a die. Meanwhile two tunes are played. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Marks: LB (on key). N (script letter on head). Comments: Leopold Lambert, a variation of his popular conjuror series, this being the only known version with decorated clown head in bisque. The clown has painted rosy face with clown decorations, blue glass eyes, blue and green mohair wig, carton torso and wire upper arms and legs, paper mache lower legs, bisque hands, and is wearing a blue and green silk acrobat/clown costume with sequin trim. He stands between the two chairs, and when wound he slowly raises himself to a perpendicular stage with the floor while the chairs slowly tip to sides, then continues the lift until he is upright, and finally until he appears to be turning completely before stopping and beginning his descent. Music plays throughout. The anticipation of action is enhanced by pauses at each stage. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Marks: Depose (impressed on platform at back). Comments: Vichy/Triboulet, circa 1910, the model was deposed by that firm. Attending the school is 5" all bisque teacher with swivel head, glass eyes, peg-jointed arms and legs, blonde mohair wig and silk dress, along with all-bisque students with swivel heads, painted features, blonde mohair wigs, original cotton dresses, peg-jointed limbs. French, circa 1890, an accompanying letter, dated 1934, bequeaths the toy to "ma cher Suzanne" describing the schoolroom as a "toy from my long-ago childhood". Comments: Gebruder Heubach, believed to be a portrait of "Princess Angeline", daughter of Native American Chief Seattle for whom that city was named. Princess Angeline, who lived out her aged life in Seattle, subsisting by digging clams, was one of the first Native American subjects photographed by famed photographed Edward Curtis. It is said that he paid her $1 for each photograph and Curtis recalled "that she preferred to spend her time having pictures taken to digging clams". Encased with a glass-sided wooden box with fancy turn screws at the back for opening is an elaborately constructed heavy pasteboard multi-storied building with alcoves and garret rooms and a wig-maker's shop at the front. Posed in the shop are two men that are engaged in creating a wig, holding wigs and combs in their hands, two mannequins along side. A woman stands in front of the shop to attract customers, and man points to a large decorated sigh. At the right is a soldier with drum, and nearby is a little dog. When activated by pouring stand in the tower, various actions occur: the wig-makers work on the wig, the woman and man bend up and down and wave sticks, the soldier beats drum, and the dog nods head up and down. Condition: excellent and wonderfully preserved. Comments: circa 1820, attributed to Pierre Landras, an early luxury toy maker located at Palais Royal at the beginning of the 19th century, a similar piece with makerÕs label was sold from the collection of Christian Bailly (#119). Value Points: superb state of preservation, outstanding artistry of the tiny figures and creative movements. Estimate: 6000/9000

20" (51 cm.) h. 19" base. Arranged upon an oval ebony base is a paper mache scene depicting a French village set against a coursing stream with brice bridge. The houses, of pasteboard with gesso and hand-painted architectural details, include multi-storied affairs and a windwill. There is a path with fence leading up the hillside to the windmill, a full-masted ship is centered in the rushing waters, and 15 soldiers on horseback, with bugle, flag or sabres, are posed upon the bridge as though entering the village. When strings activated at the sides, three actions occur: the soldiers march along, the ship moves up and down in the waves, and the windmill turns. Meanwhile music plays. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well, works and presentation are entirely original. Comments: in the manner of Tharin of Paris, circa 1860. Value Points: charming early piece whose handmade and painted scenery and wooden works construction is visible from the back side, under original glass dome with painted background to enhance the scene. Hollow paper mache form of horse's torso and head with painted features, harness, saddle, and man's legs along the side of horse;, hole in center of saddle when person's upper torso and head could emerge, while playing as though riding the horse. A decorative blanket disguises the real person's legs. The popular toy was a standard in French playrooms throughout much of the second half of the 19th century, and was created by several French firms specializing in paper mache novelties; this being an exceptionally large variation of the toy. A handsome paper mache man with brown complexion, brown glass eyes, painted facial features, painted teeth, hinged mouth, fleeced hair, carton torso and legs, metal upper arms, paper mache hands with pointing finger, is standing on original circular base sculpted to simulate cobblestone street, his back to a lamp pole; he is costumed in rich theatrical silks as though a performer, and he holds a sheet music in his hand. When wound, two tunes play, and six movements occur: he lifts and lowers right hand, and then his left hand, as though keeping time to music; his head nods in time to the music, his eyes blink open and closed, his lip moves open and closed as though singing, and the lamp pole revolves. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Gustav Vichy, an illustration of the rare automaton appears in Les Jouets by Leo Claretie.
