Vintage, circa 1900, photo of several miners in a mine. Besides the drill rods leaning up against the side of the tunnel, three miners' candlesticks can be seen - lit! Lot of 2 Vintage Photographs of Humboldt County, CA

Lot #473 (Sale Order 123 of 323)

Lot of two photographs of Humboldt County views. One shows a group of men with a "J.B.I.U. of America / Local Union No. 421" banner, circa 1905. In the back ground on a wagon (probably part of a parade float) are two barbers with clients sitting in barber chairs. In pencil near the bottom of the image is written, "Eureka, Calif." The other is an unmounted print showing many automobiles in "downtown" Scotia (circa 1920?), the Pacific Lumber Company mill town south of Eureka and Fortuna. On the back is written, "This is a busy day on Scotia's Main St. The Elks were having some sort of a convention and spent Sat. morning in Scotia. They had a band and everything, so we got off work for about half an hour. What do you think of our wonderful moving picture show?" The Winema building can be seen to the left side of the image. The mount of the barbers' union photo has been trimmed to the edge of the image, 6" x 8 1/4" and there is a diagonal crease in the print, partially torn, at lower left. The Scotia photo measures 4 1/2" x 6 7/8". [LP-32]

Lot of 2 Stagecoach & Covered Wagon Photographs

Lot #493 (Sale Order 143 of 323)

Lot of two sepia toned, unmounted photographs (circa 1870s-1880s?). One shows a stagecoach being pulled by a team of eight mules (or horses). The stage is by an adobe type structure; a black man is holding the lead pair of horses. The second image shows several white women and a child watching oxen pulling a covered wagon through a stream. A black family stands in the background, perhaps with a waiting team going the other direction. The look of the terrain, the structure, and all the people in both photos suggest that these two photos may have been taken in Australia or, perhaps, Africa. Regardless of location, they are both great images in near fine condition. [LP-39]

S.S. Central America Wreck Recovered Gold Sample S.S. Central America Wreck Recovered Gold Sample

S.S. Central America Wreck Recovered Gold Sample

Lot #607 (Sale Order 257 of 323)

Ship wreck gold sample - S.S. Central America. This gold was recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Central America, a side wheel steamer that operated between Central America and the east coast of the United States during the 1850s. In September of 1857 she sank during a hurricane off the coast of the Carolinas. Now often referred to as the "Ship of Gold", she was transporting more than 10 tons of California gold and coinage to New York from Panama. The value of the gold in 1857 was estimated at $2 million. The wreckage was located in 1987 with a good amount of gold and artifacts recovered. At the time, the treasure brought up from the S.S. Central America was estimated at somewhere between $100-150 million. Gold coins minted in California, gold ingots, and gold samples recovered from the wreck have been sold over the years by the group that discovered the wreck. This lot is a part of that recovered treasure. It consists of one-half gram of gold sealed in a protective labels sample case. 1/8” X 1/8” X 1/16", .5 Grams.

World Famous Hamburg 8 - Handcuffs by Kayser World Famous Hamburg 8 - Handcuffs by Kayser

World Famous Hamburg 8 - Handcuffs by Kayser

Lot #667 (Sale Order 316 of 323)

This is a vintage pair of the world famous Hamburg 8 - handcuffs. Made by Kayser of Germany these handcuffs from the 1930s were very popular with the German police and also by escape artists worldwide, because it could be simply but ingeniously gimmicked for fast release. The restraint can be quickly snapped shut. To unlock the cuff the key must to be pushed into the keyhole to press down the locking bolt. These are surely not the safest handcuffs of the world, but if they are applied correctly, it is very difficult for the restrained person to unlock the cuff, even if he has the key. In completely folded condition the cuff is unlocked and always ready for action. Folded they are very small at 3 1/2" x 3 1/4". They come with the original key and work great! [GX-48]
