A Wonderfully Preserved "Alabama Baby" by Ella Smith 800/1200 Lot #1 (Sale Order 1 of 306) 24" (61 cm.) All cloth doll with pressed and oil-painted facial features, brown painted short curly hair with golden highlights, painted blue eyes, richly painted lashes, upturned nose, closed mouth, plump blushed cheeks, stitched rounded seam at top of head, stitch-applied ears, stitch-jointed shoulders and hips, stitch-defined fingers with separate thumbs, bare feet with defined toes, wearing antique white baby gown with lace trim, undergarments. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: (illegible Smith stamp). Comments: Ella Smith's Alabama Baby, circa 1912, the doll, named "Lucky" by its present owner, Jacque Shafer; her purchase of the doll at a 1981 Theriault auction led to an acquaintance with the daughter of Ella Smith and subsequent publication of her book, "Ella Smith and Alabama Babies Scrapbook", a copy of which is included with this doll.

A wooden-framed presentation box with decorative paper wraps and engraving, hinges open to reveal well-fitted interior, comprising bisque doll with brown glass sleep eyes, painted facial features, open mouth, four teeth, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig, French composition and wooden fully-jointed body, and contents. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Dep 0. Comments: circa 1895, for the French market, the doll and trousseau were likely prepared for a luxury boutique Etrennes gift. Value Points: in unplayed with condition, the superb presentation includes six luxurious silk or woolen ensembles, each with dress or coat and bonnet (one being an unusual Pierrette costume and including a bisque-headed miniature marotte); a hidden lower level presents six undergarments, a porcelain wash set, and two glass-topped boxes with 12 miniature accessories including perfume, soap, brushes, fingerless gloves, and more.

An artist easel with faux-wood-grained cover is surmounted by a gilt lettered "Prix de Rome", and supports a child's paint box with lovely engraving on the lid to suggest an actual painting; hinging open to reveal various artist supplies viz. brushes, miniature palette, miniature easel, paints on silver dishes, and more, still tied to the box and in unplayed with condition. The famous Prix de Rome, established in 1663,was a famous prize awarded to a promising French art student each year, and was a natural theme for creation of a child's toy painting set. The set was presented in Parisian Etrennes catalogs, circa 1890.

Of light maple wood with faux-bamboo ornamental carvings, comprising armoire with full-length mirror on one door, shelved interior on other door, and single drawer, with silver handles; along with matching three-drawer chest with faux-marble top. Each piece bears the insignia stamp of Collet of Paris. Near mint unplayed with condition. Collet Freres, successor to Choumer & Collet, creators of doll furniture since 1867. These exact pieces are shown in a 1910 advertisement of Collet, as shown in The Encyclopedia of French Dolls by Theimer, page 146.

Early French Wooden Cabinet with Shell Arrangement and Porcelain Dolls 1500/2000 Lot #76 (Sale Order 76 of 306) 26" (66 cm.) cabinet. A wooden cabinet with arched roof and glass front, contains within an elaborate shell arrangement depicting a fountain surmounted by an archway and reached by stairs. Standing on either side of the fountain are a porcelain man and woman, each with painted facial features and hair, and each wearing an original Brittany folklore costume in elaborate detail. Excellent condition, the shell work was a tradition of the Brittany region of France throughout the 19th century and can occasionally be found incorporated into a presentation with dolls as this wearing traditional Brittany costumes; it is likely the elaborate piece was created to commemorate an important marriage of the region, circa 1865.

Each is of heavy card stock with flocked cover and elaborate gilded decorations, feathers, and cord braid, comprising 1803 Hussar helmet, officer's helmet of the Foreign Legion (Legion Etranger) of 1831, and tricorn hat. Created at the beginning of the 20th century, the realistic models are authentic in detail, and appropriate for costuming military dolls about 15"-17". Excellent condition.

An Extraordinary French Paper Mache Lady in Original Costume with Provenance 3000/4500 Lot #78 (Sale Order 78 of 306) 28" (71 cm.) (excluding coronet). Solid domed paper mache shoulder head with black painted pate, oval shaped face with elongated strong throat, black enamel inset eyes, delicately painted lashes, thick brush stroked brows, aquiline shaped nose with accented nostrils, closed mouth, pale accented lips, brunette human hair, original kid lady body with shapely torso, one piece shapely legs and arms, stitched and separated fingers and toes. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Circa 1845, the lady doll wears her original ivory satin gown with gold metallic embroidery and fringe, ivory sash, aqua satin floor-length cape, slippers, and a long veil that cascades from a silver coronet decorated with faux-diamonds and silk flowers. The doll is mounted upon her original wooden stand with painted decorations (see inset photo), and has her original medal with cutwork paper flowers and decorations detailing the doll's significance. Value Points: superb preservation of the rare and large early doll, the complexion, painting and body in perfect pristine state, the costume original; the doll was exhibited for many decades in the famous Musee Roybet-Fould outside of Paris.

Carved wooden swivel head with sculpted facial features and hair, the back of head carved separately and attached, deeply carved hair waved into casual ringlet curls behind the ears, sculpted eye sockets, painted blue eyes, aquiline nose, closed mouth with gentle expression, all wooden androgynous-sculpted body with simple-carving and dowel jointing, over-sized hands in expressive pose, painted blue stockings on lower legs, painted two-strap shoes. Condition: generally excellent, some typical paint wear and minor wood flakes, original painted finish. Comments: maker unknown, the facial and hair sculpting, coupled with the androgynous body style, are suggestive of the female French author, George Sands, whose writings and socially scandalous behavior, were the talk of Paris during the mid-1800s. Wonderful French Hide-Covered Wooden Toy Camel with Wheels 2000/3000 Lot #192 (Sale Order 194 of 306) 32" (81 cm.) l. A carved wooden two-hump camel is covered with light brown hide, and has glass eyes, generous mane and elaborate leather harness and metal stirrups. The camel rests upon cast iron wheels so it can be moved along. Excellent condition. French, circa 1867, the quality of workmanship, grand size, and rarity of the exotic animal style suggests its production by Nicolas Schanne, whose toy animals were exhibited at the 1867 Paris Exposition, and highly praised by the judges.

Outstanding Early Wooden Mannequin with Mystery Articulations 5000/7000 Lot #193 (Sale Order 195 of 306) 34" (86 cm.) The all-wooden doll features hand-carved head with deeply sculpted curly hair, refined facial features with defined eye sockets, aquiline nose, carved ears, and delicate complexion wash with shaded blue eyes, lips, blonde hair. The head is attached to the torso by a central dowel with seven wooden "rings", and the upper and lower torso are separated by a similar dowel with ten wooden "rings"; there is ball and dowel jointing at the shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles, and additional pivot jointing at the upper and lower arms. Condition: generally excellent. original facial finish with very minor nose rub. Comments: maker unknown, the facial sculpt is suggestive of early 1800's Romantic Era; artist's wooden mannequins were created by various firms at this time, and their influence on the mid-19th century French fashion doll wooden bodies is evident here. Value Points: very rare early wooden doll with superb sculpting of face, hands and toes, intriguing mystery body with infinite posing possibilities.

Each is one piece carved wooden head, arms and torso with sculpted detail of hair, hats and costume, with loosely dangling wooden legs, and tri-pod stick-pin balance base. The dolls were designed to rest upon a stick, drum, tabletop or such, and when the platform was lightly tapped, the dolls would "dance" about. Germany, circa 1880, the dolls were imported to France and used in many luxury Parisian parlor toy presentations, as well as being sold separately. Amusing German "Monkey and Donkey Organ Grinder" Automaton attributed to Zinner and Sohne 1200/1800 Lot #241 (Sale Order 243 of 306) 13" (33 cm.) x 7" base. Posed upon a wooden base with decorative paper covers is a paper mache donkey with glass eyes and nodding head. Seated side-saddle on the donkey is a paper mache monkey with painted facial features, original silk costume, wooden hands and feet, holding a brass horn. When the porcelain-tipped handle at the front is turned, the monkey turns to and fro, the donkey nods his head, and pumps the musical organ with his right foot; music plays. Condition: very good, surface dust, mechanism and music function well. Comments: attributed to Zinner and Sohner, circa 1890. Value Points: rare and amusing automaton with charming motions.

Firmly shaped bull dog with flocked flannel cream cover having painted brown shaded, has curled ears, large amber glass eyes, black nose, hinged jaws that when opened, reveal ferocious fangs and teeth, original ruff and leather collar, wheels hidden at base of feet. When pulled along by silver chain, the bulldog nods his bobbing head and jaw opens and closes. French, circa 1925.
