A Group of 4 Original Old Illustrated Gil Blas Weeklies, with Post Impressionist Artist, T. Steinlen Lot #4 (Sale Order 4 of 336) The favorite cover-artist on these old items is Theophile Steinlen, a contemporary of Toulouse Lautrec's. In fact the two artists would have been working together for this publication, they would have been sketching the same subjects. We have seen these items framed-up and offered for hundreds of dollars at big city galleries, today offered here at Paige Auction for a low opening bid for this grouping of four. See the other photographs to notice that the interior and back of these large format publications have other illustrations by Steinlen and other Parisian artists. The condition is quite good on these - there is a little wear and aging, including some nicks and tears to the paper, which is to be expected on old newsprint. They are all from 1895. The outside dimensions on these is 15 3/4" x 11 3/4" inches.

A Group of 4 Original Old Illustrated Gil Blas Weeklies, with Art by Artist, T. Steinlen Lot #8 (Sale Order 8 of 336) We are fortunate to be offering two groups of four Gil Blas tabloid-size old illustrated newspapers. This is the second lot of four in the auction. These are beautifully printed in black and white with plenty of red accenting, all with that old kind of stone lithography. These could be framed as is, or one could matt-over the type to show-off the beautiful old post-impressionist illustrations. In fact, we've seen these offered at hundreds of dollars in fancy galleries. The artist, Theopile Steinlen, had been a friend and compatriot of Toulouse-Lautrec. The two artists had been known to draw/paint the same famous performers; in fact, the infamous Jane Avril (a muse of Toulouse-Lautrec's) is seen doing the can-can on the cover of one of these. The condition is pretty good considering the age. There are some nicks and tears, some aging and wear to the paper. All in all, much better than to be expected for something so old and fragile. The size on each is 15 3/4" x 10 3/4". And besides the wonderful cover art, there is also much interior and back-cover artwork, mostly by Steinlen. Unfortunately we couldn't find any acknowledgement to Lautrec in these.

World War 1 Vintage Poster from France for the 2nd National Defense Investment Lot #9 (Sale Order 9 of 336) This interesting old poster tells a great story in its images and words. It shows the proud people of France offering-up a part of their savings to the allegorical figures of Marianne (the muse of France, like our Lady Liberty) and the child who represents hope and the future. There are subtle colors in the printing. This would have been printed around 1918 with artwork by Alcide Robaudi, a notable historical salon painter in Paris. The condition is pretty good considering it's age, a little wear and aging to the paper with some water stains on the lower right. If linen-backed, this item would look amazing. The size is 47" x 31 1/2".

A Lot of 2 Old French, Le Rire, Humoristic Journals from France from 1906 and 1912 Lot #14 (Sale Order 14 of 336) When we saw the great artwork in these old magazines, we thought it would be great to represent them in this auction. Charles Leandre, the artist on the 1906 item, had been a well-known theatrical artist of the period. Notice on the back of the 1912 one that there is a humorous illustration of the budding art style, Cubism, which would have been quite radical for the time. There is some small staining in the red near the word "Rire" on the 1906 one and some tearing along the binding edge. The size on each is 12 1/4" x 9 1/8".
