Extremely Rare Largest Size of the Important American Cloth "Columbian Doll" 3000/4000 Lot #1 (Sale Order 1 of 345) 30" (76 cm.) All-cloth doll with stitched-on shoulder-plate head over muslin form, flat-dimensional face with oil-painted complexion and facial features, oil-painted short shaded brown curls, outlined blue eyes with defined pupils and white eye dots, shaded brown encircling eye shadow, short-stroke brows, outlined nose, painted mouth with shaded and outlined lips, muslin stitch-shaped body with oil-painted lower arms and legs, nice antique costume, undergarments, brooch, shoes. Condition: generally excellent, original finish with few typical rubs. Comments: Emma Adams of Oswego, New York, whose doll was entered into competition at the important 1893 Columbian International Exposition where it was the first American doll to be awarded the Gold Medal at any international exposition, an honor previously bestowed mostly on French doll firms such as Jumeau. In homage to this award the doll was thereafter named Miss Columbia, thus Columbian Doll. Value Points: extremely rare largest size of the landmark American doll, of which few examples are known, with very fine artistry of painting of features and complexion.

All-Original American Black "Witherspoon Rag Doll" 800/1100 Lot #9 (Sale Order 9 of 345) 12" (30 cm.) Black cotton sateen doll with flat-dimensional face having varnished finish with oil-painted features, large outlined brown eyes with white eye dots, defined nose, brows and lips, stitch-jointing at shoulders and hips, antique costume. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Witherspoon Rag Doll. Pat. Applied For New Orleans (paper label on back torso). Comments: Maud Witherspoon Rag Doll Manufacturing Company was founded in New Orleans about 1900; the Witherspoon family had ancestral ties to both the Confederate Army and civil rights advocates, and family ancestors were once owners of the Ellington Plantation in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana. Maud Witherspoon founded the doll company in order to support her widowed mother and younger sister (Cora Witherspoon, a noted American stage and film actress whose career spanned 1905-1954). Articles about Maud appeared in 1902 Troy Daily News and 1901 Indiana Weekly which described her as a "gentle fragile girl thrown on her own resources who...noting the craze for all things Southern" determined to manufacture the very cloth dolls that she had made for pleasure while "still a mere chit of a girl" growing up in the French quarter. Value Points: rare doll with original paper label, intriguing history.

Rare Early American Cloth Topsy-Turvy Doll in Petite Size 400/600 Lot #23 (Sale Order 23 of 345) 10" (25 cm.) An alternate doll head is posed on either side of a muslin torso, and designed so that the full-length costume which accompanies each head will hide the alternate head. When the doll is flipped over, the second head and second costume appear. Each head is stuffed solid with lithograph-printed face depicting a black-complexioned child with coral-shaded lips, and a white-complexioned child with brown curly hair; each doll has factory original costume. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: American, commercially made, attribution uncertain, circa 1890. Value Points: especially nice detail of facial expressions on the rare topsy-turvy.

Early California Folk Art Doll's Chest of Drawers 500/900 Lot #24 (Sale Order 24 of 345) 17" (43 cm.) Handmade of found wood, the three-drawer chest has wooden knobs and two small handkerchief drawers at the top, with arch-shaped apron, and having chip-carved scenes on each labeled drawer, including "Ramona's Home" and "Overlooking San Diego Bay". On the backside is hand-lettered documentation of maker (name illegible) and San Diego, California 1905". Excellent condition. American, endearing scenes complement the exuberant details of the wooden cabinet, with maker's name and attribution.

American Black Stockinette "Missionary Rag Baby" Attributed to Julia Beecher 1100/1500 Lot #25 (Sale Order 25 of 345) 21" (53 cm.) Firmly-stuffed black stockinette head with well-defined stitch-shaped facial features, cut-out eye sockets with eye whites having painted lashes and black shoe button eyes, embroidered brows, nostrils and well-shaped red lips, black yarn hair cap, the head sewn onto original brown cotton sateen body with stitch jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, mitten hands with separate thumbs. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: attributed to Julia Beecher, of Elmira, New York, circa 1890, sister-in-law of Harriet Beecher Stowe, who authored Uncle Tom's Cabin, and of Henry Ward Beecher, the famed abolitionist. Stockinette dolls were made in the Congregational Church sewing circle of Elmira, New York from 1893 to 1910, with proceeds donated to missionary groups, thus earning the dolls the name of Missionary Rag Babies. Value Points: rarely found doll in especially fine condition with original body and antique costume including photographic brooch pin.

Each is all cloth with unusual block-shaped heads with one head seam encircling the sides and crown, with painted facial features and hair, each having painted black hair, and well-defined facial features including eyes, entire nose (of nearly identical shape), and lips. The larger doll has stitch jointing at hips and shoulders. Condition: very good, original finish with some craquelure and darkening. Comments: American, late 19th century, from small cottage industry whose maker is unknown, the very similar painting of the facial features, especially the nose, and similar block shape of the head suggests the same maker of both. Value Points: artfully-painted features, the eye shading especially rich and deep, great antique costumes.

Wonderful and Rare American Cloth "Philadelphia Baby" for J.B. Sheppard 2000/3000 Lot #34 (Sale Order 34 of 345) 22" (56 cm.) All-cloth doll with pressed and oil-painted facial features and hair, deeply-defined eye sockets with incised eyeliner, brown painted eyes, brown painted hair with stippling onto forehead and matching brown brows, accented nostrils, stitched ears, closed mouth with very full lips, stockinette stitch-jointed body, oil-painted lower arms and legs, antique costume appears original. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: known as the "Philadelphia Baby", the distinctive doll was commissioned for the J.B. Sheppard Department Store of Philadelphia toward the end of the 19th century; the quality of artistry and workmanship is superb and distinctive, yet the actual maker remains unknown. Value Points: rarely found American doll with superb sculpting details and fine original painted finish. Ex-collection Evelyn Ackerman from which it was acquired for the Blackler Collection.

A curious pencil inscription on the left leg reads "Origina [sic] "Raggdy [sic] Ann Culpitts NB family" suggesting the doll was given that designation by a later owner of the doll. The doll owns three little vintage dolls and animals. Value Points: the naive painting is harmoniously enhanced by fine sense of artistry on this wonderful early portrait painting in doll form and intriguing family notations.

Condition: very good/excellent with some play wear, original painted finish. Comments: American, Martha Chase, circa 1910, the brown-eyed doll has hand-lettered inscription on her torso "Rosalind, given to Helena Modjeska Chase by Madame Helena Modjeska". Helen Modjeska was a noted Polish actress of the mid-19th century, immigrating to California in 1876 with her husband with the aim of abandoning the theatre and forming a Utopian colony near Anaheim in the manner of the New England Brooks Farm. The colony was a failure but the actress lived out her life in California, dying in Newport Beach in 1909. The significance of the doll's notation remains an intriguing mystery. Value Points: charming pair of brother/sister dolls with antique costumes, one with provenance.

A two-wheel wooden sulky with upholstered seat has hidden pedals for operating the cart, while appearing to be pulled by a carved wooden horse; the horse has a hinge at throat which connects with the wheels allowing the horse to "turn" when the cart turns. The horse and cart have original painted finish, with dappled accents on the horse, original canvas harness, upholstered seat, and even the original buggy whip. Excellent condition. Very Rare American Cloth Topsy-Turvy by Witherspoon Rag of New Orleans 800/1200 Lot #93 (Sale Order 93 of 345) 16" (41 cm.) The classic topsy-turvy doll depicts a brown-complexioned doll on one side, and a white-complexioned doll on the other, each with artistically oil-painted features, and applied hair, the white-complexioned girl with unusual brown-painted eyes and brows and black mohair curls, with common torso. The small New Orleans cottage industry, under the direction of Maud Witherspoon, sold its dolls in important stores throughout the United States for a short period of time at the beginning of the 1900s. Value Points: dolls by this firm are very rare; the topsy-turvy models are virtually unknown.

The rag-stuffed black stockinette head has inset brown glass eyes with embroidered brows, stitch-shaped nose with thread-dotted nostrils, red stitched lips, grey fleecy wool stitched wig, old very worn composition-jointed body with black cloth stockinette cover. Condition: very good. Two German Bellhop "Tricky" Monkeys By Schuco 500/800 Lot #343 (Sale Order 340 of 345) 11" (28 cm.) and 15". Each has felt shaped head with glass inset eyes, mohair beard and hair, sewn-on red and black felt uniform with gold trim, buttons, and matching cap, with jointed arms, felt paw pads. Each has tail which joins to internal mechanism causing the tail to move up and down ("yes") or side-to-side ("no"). Very good condition, costumes vibrant, mechanisms work well, few moth holes on left foot and face of larger. Germany, Schuco, circa 1930s, marketed as "Tricky".

Very Rare Exhibition Model of Carved Wooden Horse on Wheeled Platform 4500/6500 Lot #347 (Sale Order 344 of 345) 44" (43 cm.) l. The carved wooden horse with cream hide finish is posed upon a wooden platform with heavy cast iron spoked wheels, having leather ears, horsehair mane and tail, painted black hooves, painted open mouth with defined teeth, and very elaborately-arranged leather harness and leather-strap bells. Very good condition, wear to hide at saddle area. The maker is unknown, although the very large presentation size suggests its original use as an exhibition model, late 1800s. Wonderful and very rare Americana.
