Garcia SIGNED Hart Valley Drifters 1962 photo Lot #1 (Sale Order 2 of 348) The long lost BAND SIGNED and DATED The Hart Valley Drifters B&W December 18, 1962 photograph at San Mateo J. C. Folk Festival inscribed:
"To John Winter – December 18, 1962 - The Hart Valley Drifters – San Mateo J.C. Folk Music Festival"
Below each performer hand signed their names and instruments: Jerry Garcia – Banjo – voice David Nelson – Guitar + voice Norman Van Maastricht - Dobro Robert Hunter - Bass Who would have ever guessed the musical history that this lineup would later bring to the world. This is the actual first generation photograph of Jerry Garcia's first recording as a professional musician; and probably Dave Nelson and Robert Hunter’s first recorded professional gigs as well. This is where it all began in the early 1960’s, and these signatures date and document a musical history that it still alive and well more than a half a century later. We begin our historical artifact and artwork event with the oldest and best preserved band signed photo of The Hart Valley Drifters. It is an old worn, used and not pristine straight from the old photo album historical artifact that has corner marks from aging. Estimate: $25,000 COA Included. |

Jerry Garcia Tokyo Art Show at Parco Gallery Lot #52 (Sale Order 51 of 348) An original Jerry Garcia Parko Stores Tokyo art show poster, one of 20 sent to Jerry for his approval and permission to use the Snail Garden image; 15 of which he signed and numbered. From A to Z this show was a complete disaster, starting with when Parko received the first shipment of signed and numbered prints and discovered that they were not of the quality their buyers would purchase. So in a rush to produce a few high quality pieces they chose the Snail Garden and three others to print onto superior stock, which is why four of his early prints are not on the same stock as all of the others. It is widely believed that Jerry cancelled this show, but according to Jerry himself it was ongoing communications problems with the producers of his art series was the real culprit and it was Parco who ended the business relationship and cancelled this show. This is one of the 5 remaining unsigned posters sent to Jerry (making it actually rarer than the signed and numbered copies!). Dimensions: 23.25" X 33". Estimate: $3500

Rick Griffin 1967 FD-65 Hybrid Uncut Poster Sheet Lot #69 (Sale Order 68 of 348) A VERY interesting early 1967 Rick Griffin FD-65 Avalon Ballroom official promoter-issued second printing proof sheet variant that features a yellow-border poster alongside a set of six white-border cards, a never before seen mystery! This show was for the Canned Heat Blues Band appearing with Big Brother & the Holding Company with Janis Joplin 6/8-11/1967. Good/decent B condition with a hint of edge toning, a few stray surface marks and tiny stains, but overall not too bad- no holes/tears or anything major. This is just a rare, unusual, funky fun one of a kind original 1967 Rick Griffin poster proof that has a great largely unknown background history. Every poster has a story and Rick used to laugh and grow mystical when people would ask him about the source of inspiration for the artwork on this poster, or ask him if he had ever met, or knew the lady used in the central image. His standard answer was "She came to me in a book of dreams" and years later Detroit artist Mark Arminski discovered exactly what Rick meant by that when he found an old copy of "Aunt Sally's Policy Players Dream Book Study of Harmony in Numbers" written by Henry J Wehman in 1889 for lottery and numbers game players with the artwork Rick used for this poster. This was later verified and confirmed by Rick's partner in the California Graphic Exchange, Jose Kent who still had the Aunt Sally's book Rick originally used to reproduce the image from. Dimensions: 28.5 X 22.5". Estimate: $650

Later in his career, he illustrated the First Version of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam translated by Edward Fitzgerald, using images of skeletons and animated pots. Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley found this illustration in the book of poems at the library.

Grateful Dead 1972 Hollywood Bowl Poster Lot #88 (Sale Order 87 of 348) This is a rare original 1st print poster from the June 17, 1972 show by the Grateful Dead and NRPS, at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Due to the advancing chronic liver disease that Pigpen was slowly dying from, this turned out to be his last show. The central picture of the band was printed using a split-fountain method, which meant that each poster was a slightly different variant on the color spectrum, this one being an eye-catching psychedelic fuchsia to orange. The poster is in overall very good condition with a puncture in the top center surface which could be repaired or left as is. There are a few staple holes and a couple of other surface abrasions here and there, which do not detract from the beauty of this poster. These are hard to find and sell for well over $1000 in mint condition when available. This is in B- condition, all things considered, and would be a very nice addition to any collection. Dimensions: 16 7/8" L x 21 7/8" H. Estimate: $500

Pink Rooster GD Poster - Uptown Theatre Lot #124 (Sale Order 123 of 348) You are looking at a rare original 1st print of the poster for the Grateful Dead’s three day run at the Uptown Theatre in Chicago, IL on Feb 26-28 198. Oh, to be back at some shows at the Uptown, a converted movie palace that held about 4,500 fans. This particular poster came to be known to collectors as the “Little Red Rooster,” but is often mistakenly referred to as the “Little Pink Rooster,” due to the light coloration The story is the artists only had two colors of red ink for this job and they knew in advance that their little red rooster would end up rather pink. So as a late addition, a tag was added around the rooster’s neck stating: “I am a little red rooster.” It obviously didn’t completely work to settle the red/pink debate, but these posters all immediately sold out, and are one of the harder to find modern Grateful Dead prints due to the constant demand from the die-hard Chicago fan base. Dimensions: 18 15/16" L x 24 15/16" H. Estimate: $750

Framed Egyptian Sphinx Oil Painting Signed by Artist Rick Griffin Lot #137 (Sale Order 135 of 348) This is “THE” Rick Griffin 1978 Original Oil Painting commissioned by Relix Magazine for the cover of their issue reporting on the Grateful Dead’s ground-breaking set of shows at the Sound and Light Theatre at the Great Pyramids in Gizeh, Egypt. Les Kippel, the founder and publisher of Relix, specifically wanted Rick to paint the cover art for that issue. Rick sent Les various work-ups, and Les being Les, had other changes and tweaks that he wanted made, including asking for more detail and recognizable facial expressions on the expedition team, which clearly shows Jerry Garcia as the central ‘archeologist’ on the dig. Eventually, Les must have been happy, as the painting made the cover. This painting is the final version used on that cover, and is the most highly detailed of Griffin’s Egypt Relix series. It has been beautifully custom-framed with museum quality materials. Dimensions: Framed 21 3/8" L x 27 3/8" H. Estimate: $35,000

“Grateful Dead Records” 1973 "From the Mars Hotel" Side B Steel Record Pressing Plates Lot #187 (Sale Order 185 of 348) We originally thought that these were the original “Grateful Dead Records” 1973 "Wake of the Flood" steel record pressing plates that were rescued from the flooded basement of the Grateful Dead office in San Rafael, then moved to Rock Scully’s duplex in Hepburn Heights that he and Jerry were evicted and these were recovered with the few surviving copies. However noted Grateful Dead tape and vinyl expert spotted this and informed us that this is really the B side of From the Mars Hotel and that the numbers prove this.
Not shown but included is a blue label commercial copy of the pressing plate that another consignor had taken from the box containing these acetates and production pieces at the same time who recognized that their piece belonged to the other lot and they happily reunited these pieces after all these years.
Steel pressing plates are one of a kind artifacts from the Grateful Dead office and are among the rarest historical artifacts in this collection. Estimate $10,000-15000

Mouse's Original Art Golden Road Poster AOR 2.192 Lot #199 (Sale Order 197 of 348) One of the crowning jewels of our auction event is Stanley Mouse’s original artwork for the 1966 Golden Road to Unlimited Devotion Grateful Dead Fan Club poster with photo by Herb Greene shown in the Art of Rock book on page 187 referenced as AOR 2.192. This is the poster that introduced the Grateful Dead to people around the country before they’d even left San Francisco, and was the start of a vast national and later international network of tribes of followers created by newsletters and mailings that gave advance notice of tours, album releases, and other news – a community that still exists. Stanley said that all he was told was they wanted a Fan Club poster and that was it. He got a nice photo from Herb Green to use and built everything around it, imagining that he was the most devoted fan of theirs in the entire world. In his vision he saw Dead Heads as Tibetan monks in Tibet who find true enlightenment and happiness on their own golden roads of unlimited devotion – a fair connection to the spiritual nature at the base of much Dead Head-ism. This piece is one of founding pieces of the Grateful Dead family history and perhaps the most historically significant item in the auction. Please note that all proceeds for the sale of this masterpiece will go directly to Stanley, a standing agreement with the auction house in place for well over a year now. It is near and dear to Stanley’s heart and after an hour of deliberation he said to make the opening bid $420,000. In light of record auction prices for other music related iconic artworks Stanley thinks that a fair and accurate auction estimate for this piece is… $1,500,000 The staff at Donley Auctions have asked that serious inquiries for this artwork please contact Stanley directly at his studio.

FD-26-2 Hand painted orig 1966 s/by Mouse/Kelley poster Lot #200 (Sale Order 198 of 348) The moment when Stanley Miller and Alton Kelley first saw the drawing of a skeleton and roses (in a copy of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam at the San Francisco Public Library) is one of the classic moments of Grateful Dead synchronicity, ever. As Kelley said, “Look at this, Stanley. Is this the Grateful Dead or is this the Grateful Dead?” It was, as Jerry Garcia remarked, “perfect.” They took the image, added lettering and framework decoration, and shazam, had not only a Family Dog poster but also an image that would serve the Grateful Dead for the duration. This piece is Stanley’s black and white variant from the ink test run on the plate. It was his and Kelley’s pattern to keep two or three of these for themselves, a few of which they signed and later traded to one another. After 49 years in storage, Stanley decided this anniversary year would be a good time to hand embellish his original silkscreen. Because it was painted only last fall, the colors are far sharper and more vibrant than the original. This original poster bears “The Bindweed Press San Francisco” credit in corner and is the one known in Eric King’s poster guide. It was printed on vellum stock. The original print run as well as the second “OP-2” printing both bear “The Bindweed Press San Francisco” credits and are both printed on velum stock. Please note that like several other items in this auction all proceeds for the sale of this masterpiece will go directly to Stanley, a standing agreement with the auction house in place for well over a year now. Stanley has set a reserve of this one-of-a-kind piece at $25,000. In light of recent sales, a sane fair-market estimate today is $66,000.

5 Jerry Garcia Band Media Kit Template/Production Items Lot #291 (Sale Order 289 of 348) An interesting grouping of five JGB media kit template/production items all in same envelope. This is a media production kit which could easily become a current press kit for JGB that contained examples of all materials to be included as a reference so anyone could use these template materials to produce timely news and press related media upon demand, which was the technology of the day. This reference template kit includes a 10 x 14 JGB Promo tour photo with 8x10 band profiles, and receipt for all of the above work. Estimate: $100 Please note that these media production photos are not being represented as nice glossy pretty "mint" fresh off the stack/printer items here. These are production materials that were cut, tossed, sailed across the office, taped, glued, blow dried, hair sprayed, clear nail polish laid flat on the copier in sections to make the full flyer or whatever kinds of photos and things, definitely not something for the "minty-condition" types - but more for the hands on workingman humanoids among us who prefer actual historical artifacts from the worlds most beloved musician of all time rather than bright shiny objects trophy hunters seek. These are former employee owned pieces saved from a literal lifetime of unlimited devotion who has the unlimited respect among peers, friends and close friends. Est Value: $500

14 x 10 B&W Grateful Dead Promo Photo w/ Kodak Box Lot #292 (Sale Order 290 of 348) A sharp larger nice Grateful Dead 14 x 10 B&W promo photo in Kodak box found at the bottom of the media file and this one photo was all that it contained by unidentified photographer. This whole small box contained mainly old press clipping files, JGB production materials that were cut up, smudged and generally "used" by office staff to make press kits, promotional materials and anything "media" related to JGB around 1978-9. Most everything was moldy and stuck together and these pieces are all that were recovered without damage or the funky odor. Things in boxes survived best, photos are not damaged but not mint either. Dimensions: 10" X 14". Estimate: $100 Please note that these media production photos are not being represented as nice glossy pretty "mint" fresh off the stack/printer items here. These are production materials that were cut, tossed, sailed across the office, taped, glued, blow dried, hair sprayed, clear nail polish laid flat on the copier in sections to make the full flyer or whatever kinds of photos and things Ð definitely not something for the "minty-condition" types - but more for the hands on workingman humanoids among us who prefer actual historical artifacts from the worlds most beloved musician of all time rather than bright shiny objects trophy hunters seek. Two Jerry Garcia Band Color Photos from Old JGB Media Production Lot #295 (Sale Order 293 of 348) Here are two really nice 8" X 10" color photos of JGB playing at a time and venue we could not guess that was shot by an unnamed, hence uncredited photographer. These are not the clear glossy high resolution shots everyone is used to today by a mile, nor are they exactly "Rob Cohen" quality by a mile either. They've got that old school JGB rumble and roll look and feel about them and that is what makes them so nice and original. Dimensions: 8" X 10" (2). Negative: app. 3" X 5" in sleeve untouched. Estimate: $250 Please note that these media production photos are not being represented as nice glossy pretty "mint" fresh off the stack/printer items here. Grateful Dead Banned WB American Beauty, 1970 Lot #310 (Sale Order 308 of 348) Another "holy grail" is the 1970 Grateful Dead Banned Warner Brothers American Beauty poster by Mouse/Kelley and photo by Herbie Greene. These were produced as free posters inserts for the new American Beauty and all but a very few went through the automatic folding machine, making the unfolded versions the rarest. The photo of the band was taken in front of "the barn" where the band practiced on Mickey Hart's ranch in Novato. When the executives at WB saw the picture and noticed that Jerry was smoking a joint this poster was immediately ordered for destruction, which is why they are so rare today. Originally from the collection of Josh "Acid Test" Postertrip museum quality framing. Dimensions: 24"X 30". Framed: 33" X 39". Estimate: $7500

Grateful Dead 1966 Straight Theater Dance Class handbill Lot #316 (Sale Order 314 of 348) The Straight Theater was a cool little building in the 17 hundred block of Haight Street that wanted to be a cool hippie dance venue. At the time in San Francisco all of the hippies were clogging the city and the odds of getting a concert venue permit at that time were remote. Instead, the Straight Theater applied for an antiquated "dance hall" permit promising "dance lessons" and that was it. This is an original venue used handbill taken by a long-time friend, associate and promoter of the band and has remained in her possession since. The poster for this artwork is listed in the Art of Rock and is known as AOR 2.224. This is for those seeking true band family artifacts from the venues at the time of the shows and not trophy's in "mint" condition. Dimensions: 8.5" X 11". Estimate for one that was really at the show owned to this day by someone who was then as now, working to promote the positive image of the Grateful Dead: Dimensions: 8.5" X 11". Estimate: $500

Grateful Dead Peace Rock III Berkeley Handbill Lot #325 (Sale Order 323 of 348) Another "holy grail" of early Grateful Dead artifacts is the Peace Rock III Berkeley 1966 handbill with the Great Society, Russ the Moose and the Charlatans May 9th at the UC campus Harmon Gym. Due to no parking on the campus and the neighborhood this was a very small show with maybe 150 people in attendance. A reporter for the student newspaper, Jann Wenner wrote a review for the Grateful Dead and the next year founded Rolling Stone Magazine and recruited Rick Griffin to do their official lettering. "Grateful Dead" is misspelled as "Greatful Dead." Estimate: $12,000

S.F. Mime Troop Appeals III AOR 2.38 handbill mint Lot #326 (Sale Order 324 of 348) THE holy grail of Warlocks and Grateful Dead handbills is the January 14, 1965 S. F. Mime Troupe Dance Concert handbill for several reasons; the first of which it is the first advertising document bearing the name "The Grateful Dead". Mickey Hart’s ‘road used’ Pearl Drum Kit w/Special Custom Curved Tom Rack & ADD-ON ITEMS for CHARITY Lot #343 (Sale Order 341 of 348) SPECIAL ADD-ON VIP BASKET OF SIGNED MICKEY HART ITEMS OFFERED WITH THIS DRUM KIT! Keep reading below for all the details!
Imagine that you are 9 years old and a few of your friends at school want to start a band and you are an aspiring drummer influenced by Mickey Hart’s style and power, and you want to join your buddies. Then imagine that your Mom was one of the original GDP ‘office girls’ and you told her that you needed a drum kit. What you see here is the result… and I am happy to report that they worked like a charm and he had more dates than anyone in his high school (we think because of these Pearl drums!). The kid wants what the kids wants to part with his lifetime coolest object on Earth so this is a no-reserve winner take all auction that starts at $10,000 – so go for it. All of us older GDF members have seen what others have legitimately pieced and patched together to make what they could semi-legitimately call a “real Mickey Hart drum set”- and have sat astonished at what these things sold for at auction. To the best of our collective extensive knowledge this is the first truly complete real-deal got it all at the same time and place for the ultimate birthday present of a lifetime. And they’re Pearl’s… and come with the following: 1 Pearl blue sparkle bass drum – no pedal included or available 1 Blue sparkle floor tom 2 Blue sparkle tom’s 1 High hat with double cymbals 1 The cool custom curved adjustable tom rack for more STOOL NOT INCLUDED – and was put there to keep people from touching it and is NOT a part of this lot but is a lot of its own somewhere. So that’s the deal… which is, this is the real deal here with absolutely no questions as to where it came from and who has owned it since their 9th birthday and wants to open a second location to his booming restaurant business in Marin county. This is no friend of a friend of a friend’s cousin who knew so and so deal here folks. Grateful Dead Family owned from day one and solid easy as pie one owner since 9 years old provenance. Everyone in the family who has seen these drums over the years (and heard him pound away on them) agrees that Mickey went way over the top with this gift – and it really is the nicest one any of us have ever seen that we all knew were really real and used as a set. Parting with the bass kick just wasn’t happening so it’s not available and don’t even ask please. And they are Pearl’s man… and someone is going to walk away with these drums. There are no road cases and whoever ends up with these should either come pick them up in person – or else send road cases ahead for packing. Estimate: $40,000 BUT, WAIT! THERE'S MORE! The lucky winner of the Pearl Drum Kit will have the option of purchasing a Drum Kit Add-On VIP Gift Basket for $5,000.00, which includes: - A personal note to the auction winner signed and framed - A signed photo of Mickey, framed, a complete sets of signed Calato drum sticks (Beginner Sticks, Mallets, Drum Brush) - Signed copies of Mickey's books, (Planet Drum, Drumming At The Edge Of Magic, Songcatchers, Spirit Into Sound - Signed copies Of Mickey's Cd's Collection (Planet Drum, Superorganism, Rolling Thunder, At The Edge).
