"A massive example, the iron hilt finely inlaid in elaborate silver flowering vinework overall. The broad blade forged of pattern-welded damascus steel , with narrow fuller at the spine and expanded tip, chiseled at the right forte with Surya, the Hindu God of the Sun, and inscribed, THE RAJAH SAHEB DHARAMPUR. Beginning of the 19th century. Light wear. Presented by the Raja of Dharampur, the English inscription indicates the recipient was British, probably a high-ranking officer present on the occasion of the elevation of Dharampur to a British Protectorate on December 31, 1802. Surya the Sun God was the device of the ruling family, who were members of the Rajput Sisodia Dynasty. Surya remains the Dharampur state emblem and is depicted on its flag. Overall length 87.5 cm.

Mounted with a locally-produced snaphaunce lock featuring a sliding pan cover. The barrel with octagonal breech secured to the stock by numerous engraved silver bands. First half of the 19th century. "The hardwood hilt with high shoulders characteristic of the period, finely carved in Celtic interlace motifs and set with silver studs, the disk pommel mounted in silver with roped border and bead finial, the flared silver ferrule with engraved borders. The massive single-edged blade with substantial back fuller to either side and long false edge, etched with flowers and a crown surmounting a thistle, with substantial remains of bluing and gilding in the fullers. In its original black leather scabbard with four silver mounts engraved en suite with those of the hilt, the chape further engraved with a thistle. Third quarter of the 18th century. Light wear, areas of pitting to blade, implements lacking. Examples of this period are very seldom encountered. See James D. "A British M1897 officer?s sword with the large, nickeled steel hilt pierced with VR cypher and applied gilt copper badge of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC crowned and supported by a laurel wreath.) With knurled backstrap and wooden grip covered with sharkskin, the grip wires intact. Original leather washer intact, the M1892 blade with central fuller, the left side elaborately etched with flowering vines containing the maker?s name, HILL, NORFOLK STREET, SHEFFIELD, the crowned cypher of George V, and ROYAL FLYING CORPS. The right side marked, PROVED within a six-pointed star, and bearing the British coat of arms, together with H.R. JUNOR. In its original field scabbard of wood, covered in leather with nickeled locket and frog intact. Beginning of the 20th century. Untouched, with minor wear, leather frog lacking part of one strap. Hugh R. Junor, DFC, X SQUADRON RFC, was commissioned from the ranks of the Royal Horse Artillery into the Royal Flying Corps. He was a member of X Squadron, the small group of planes that were assigned to assist T.E. Lawrence in the campaign against the Turks. Junor alone answered Lawrence?s call for air support at Deraa on September 17, 1918, throwing himself at eight enemy aircraft in an inferior machine and drawing them off. Though finally downed, Junor continued to fight, pulling the machineguns from his fighter and racing to the front, where blew up a section of the railroad singlehanded. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions. Hugh R. Junor held the rank of Flight Lieutenant upon his death as a test pilot in 1926. T.E. Lawrence described Junor?s valor in detail and also included a portrait of him in his renowned book, THE SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM (1926: London, Cape.) P. 596-597: ?While we hesitated, things were marvellously solved. Junor, the pilot of the B.E. 12 machine, now alone at Azrak, had heard from the disabled Murphy of the enemy machines about Deraa, and in his own mind decided to take the Bristol Fighter?s place, and carry out the air programme. So when things were at their thickest with us he suddenly sailed into the circus. We watched with mixed feelings, for his hopelessly old-fashioned machine made him cold meat for any one of the enemy scouts or two-seaters: but at first he astonished them, as he rattled in with his two guns. They scattered for a careful look at this unexpected opponent. He flew westward across the line, and they went after in pursuit, with that amiable weakness of aircraft for a hostile machine, however important the ground target. We were left in perfect peace. Nuri caught at the lull to collect three hundred and fifty regulars, with two of Pisani?s guns; and hurried them over the saddle behind Tell Arar, on the first stage of their march to Mezerib. If the aeroplanes gave us a half-hour?s law, they would probably notice neither the lessened numbers by the mound, nor the scattered groups making along every slope and hollow across the stubble westward. This cultivated land had a quilt-work appearance from the air: also the ground was tall with maize stalks, and thistles grew saddle-high about it in great fields. Everyone helped to clear it at speed, while Junor was being driven lower. He threw us a message to say his petrol was finished. We worked feverishly for five minutes, and then put out a landing-signal. He dived at it, but as he did so the wind flawed and blew across at a sharp angle. The cleared strip was too little in any case. He took ground beautifully, but the wind puffed across once more. His under-carriage went, and the plane turned over in the rough. We rushed up to rescue, but Junor was out, with no more hurt than a cut on the chin. He took off his Lewis gun, and the Vickers, and the drums of tracer ammunition for them. We threw everything into Young?s Ford, and fled, as one of the Turkish two-seaters dived viciously and dropped a bomb by the wreck. Junor five minutes later was asking for another job. Joyce gave him a Ford for himself, and he ran boldly down the line till near Deraa, and blew a gap in the rails there, before the Turks saw him. "A fine armor wrought in copper and heavily silvered overall, made in distinctly Elizabethan style. The helmet with high comb and characteristic visor and bevor sharing a pivot, the visor pierced for ventilation and secured to the skull by a hook, the neck lames articulated, with rolled, roped borders. Breastplate with central ridge, rolled and roped borders at the neck and arm gussets and flanged at the waist with profiled applique to the lower edge, the backplate likewise rolled at neck and arm gussets. With complete arm defenses, the pauldrons with four upper plates and flared rims, the upper canons likewise of lamellar construction with rolled ridge, the rounded couters with rolled, roped borders, the vambraces rolled at the cuff. The gauntlets well-articulated, with pointed cuffs, one lacking the knuckle-plate, both likely made without fingers. Each tasset wrought from a single plate with embossed lames surmounting a pair of black velvet Elizabethan-style ?slops? or short breeches. The cuisses likewise wrought of a single plate with embossed lames, the poleyns with rounded profile and expanded wings. The two-piece greaves well-modelled, with central ridge to the obverse. The multi-lamed steel sabatons associated. With studded borders and brass buckles throughout. C. 1830s. Minor dents and wear. Releathered. Wooden stand with circular base included. The Eglinton Tournament of 1839 was a lavish reenactment of a medieval tournament and court feast by Archibald, Earl of Eglinton, held at Eglinton Castle in Ayrshire, Scotland. It was inspired by Sir Walter Scott?s IVANHOE, and intended to revive notions of chivalry throughout the British Empire, consistent with the popularity of Romanticism across Europe. This suit is of particularly high quality, and was likely commissioned by Eglinton for a special purpose. Another suit, known to have belonged to him, was auctioned in 1925. Overall height 180 cm.

"Seldom encountered, the rhinoceros grips with pommel of distinctive form, carved with raised panels. The hilt and scabbard mounts wrought entirely of silver and engraved with neoclassical vinework borders. The exceptionally long, hollowground single-edged blade etched at either forte with neoclassical panels and a horseman wearing a tricorn hat and brandishing a scimitar. In its tooled leather-covered wooden scabbard with fine silver wire seam. Late 18th-early 19th century. Worn overall with minor losses. Reputed to have belonged to Spyridon Destunis (1782-1848,) an Ionian Greek educated at Moscow, a highly-regarded Russian diplomat, Philhellene and Greek patriot. He believed strongly in the importance of classical education, and translated Plutarch?s Lives into Russian in 13 volumes. As a diplomat in Imperial Russian Foreign Service, he met and became friends with Ioannis Kapodistrias (1776-1831,) first leader of the newly-liberated Greece, who was supported by General Theodoros Kolokotronis (1770-1843.) In 1818, Destunis was appointed Russian consul general in Smyrna, where he was also inducted into the Philiki Etaireia, the elite Greek secret society which conspired against the Ottomans and planned the War of Independence, together with Emmanuil Xanthos (1772-1852,) Athanasios Tsakalov (1788-1851,) and Alexandros Ypsilantis (1792-1828,) who became its leader in 1820. Destunis tirelessly exhorted Russia and other European states to rally to the Hellenic cause, to which end, he penned many articles and letters in a number of languages, which remain of great historical importance to scholars of Ottoman-Greek relations and the Revolution. He actively pursued philanthropic support for Greek war victims throughout his later years. Another sword of his was sold through these rooms on 3/16/13. Beginning of the 19th century. Worn. The Janissary Bodyguard of Augustus the Strong was modelled upon the Ottoman Janissary Corps. "A fine, early Persian or Indian trophy shield wrought of wootz with characteristic forged-on border decorated with bands of vinework, forms the core to which elaborate gilded and engraved mounts embellished with a fine, translucent green enamel have been applied, including seven ovate tabs, a large, circular boss and rim in characteristic Polish-Hungarian style. The surface is additionally enriched with 24 gilded studs, each set with five turquoises, in concentric rings. The reverse with a pair of bronze lugs set with rings for a leather grip. 17th century. One boss restored, some turquoises lacking. Strong influence from Ottoman prototypes in Polish and Hungarian arms was common during the 17th century. See Z. "Very seldom found on the market, the walrus grips with gilded silver tangband and ferrule embellished with chiseled vines, the flared pommel enclosed in gilded silver with roped borders and set with numerous large colored stones, including rubies, emeralds and turquoises as is characteristic for the type. The broad, double-edged blade with tapered tip, fullered on each side and wrought of wootz steel. The wood-lined scabbard worked entirely in embossed, engraved and gilded silver in typical Bukharan floral motifs, the locket finely inlaid with turquoise on each side. First half of the 19th century. The presentation of these daggers was a privilege reserved to the Amir of Bukhara himself. To be seen with such a weapon in one's belt was a clear mark of favor and accomplishment, and thus generally identified ministers and heroes. Overall length 39.9 cm.

The pivoting peaked visor with sights in the form of eyes , well-modeled nose and incised and pierced breaths formed as a mouth, retained by a hook to the bevor, bevor sharing a pivot-point with the visor, fastening to the skull with a hook. The rims of the bevor and skull with single broad neck plate with studded and rolled borders. The broad gorget of two pivoting plates with studded and roped border and straps which retain the arm defences. Breastplate with central ridge and incised line decoration, with studs for shoulder straps and musket proof to left breast, rolled at the neck and arm gussets and flanged at the waist, the backplate likewise rolled at neck and arm gussets, with incised line decoration, the plate-set straps, and waist belt. With complete arm defenses, the pauldrons with four upper plates and flared rims, the upper canons with raised, roped ridge, and the inner arms protected by laminar panels, the right gauntlet well-articulated, with matching studded borders , the left gauntlet a period replacement, all with rolled borders throughout. Each cuisse composed of ten plates, each knee cop constructed of five plates with wings en suite with those of the elbows. The culet retained by a pair of hooks and composed of seven plates with studded and rolled borders. Mounted on an oak base with square plinth. 17th century or later. General wear and rubbing, remains of black painted finish, areas of old rusting, repairs to some straps. Overall height 196.1 cm
