Her Retrospections, first published in two volumes in 1929-30, contain local accounts of life in the late eighteenth century, but are soon overshadowed by her unrequited passion for John Roe, heir to Rockwell near Knockgrafton, another of her father's parishes. Good condition.

The Life and Writings of William Law Symonds by William Winter, Published by Privately Printed By Joseph W. Symonds, USA, 1908. 668 pages includes Symonds writings, a brief biography of his life, selected letters, journals, and memorials and press tributes, posthumously. Frontispiece is a photogravure from a crayon portrait of Symonds, by Mrs. Richard Hildreth. Light edgewear. Symonds graduated at Bowdoin in 1854, studied theology at Cambridge divinity-school for two years, and occupied the pulpit of a Unitarian church in Chicopee, Mass., for several months. He then went to New York city and engaged in literary pursuits, contributing to magazines and newspapers, and producing many hundred cyclopædic articles on philosophical, historical, and biographical subjects. He also took charge temporarily of the Astor library.

Notes: Includes index. 4 double page maps, fair/good condition with general wear - nothing severe. With ex-library mark on outer spine. Some cracking showing on hinges. A classic arctic voyage, reprinted in 1886. It contains a sketch of the voyage of the Jeannette, of which Melville was the chief engineer, the drift and loss of the ship in June 1881 in East Siberian Sea. The crew travelled by sledge and boat to the Siberian coast. Melville searched for De Long in the Lena River area. The book describes the country and the native peoples and includes a description of the 1884 expedition to relieve Greely's Lady Franklin Bay expedition and a proposed method to reach the North Pole.
