The Chet Helms Memorial poster was created by Alton Kelley (1940-2008) for Chet’s memorial concert service that was held at the Maritime Hall in San Francisco, California. April 30, 1994 and displayed at the Grateful Dead office in San Rafael. Chet was the founder of the Family Dog production company who hosted concerts at the Avalon Ballroom, and members of Credence Clearwater Revival, Big Brother, Gregg Allman, Peter Tork of the Monkeys, the Doobie Brothers, New Riders, Lee Michaels, Country Joe, Dan Hicks, Wavy Gravy, Peter Coyote and many more showed up to honor him. This piece is in excellent condition and came directly from the old Grateful Dead office in San Rafael, CA. as a gift to office employees. Please note: Stanley has requested that we inform everyone that his original ‘Europe 81’ watercolor painting (30” X 22”) was stolen in 2000 in a well-documented NYC theft. Grateful Dead Crew Owned 1956 Chevy Bel Air Sedan. This car was used to transport crew and other notables from 1970s-1990s. VIN VC56L035584. The car was acquired by a Grateful Dead crew member in 1975 and then gifted to his step son (the runner for the Grateful Dead) in 2003. V8 engine, automatic, original California car as it was manufactured in Los Angeles. Vintage California black plates "GPX 253". Repainted white on purple. A customized "Steal Your Face" logo is stitched on the inside rear deck of the car. Car is not in mint condition or near mint condition. V8 Engine turns over and starts but the car needs total restoration. Estimate $10,000-15,000
"This 1956 Chevy Bel Air was given to me by a longtime crew member for The Grateful Dead (who owned this car for a number of years) five years ago. The car was customized in San Rafael, California by the same shop used by many Hell's Angels for their bikes; it was repainted and re-chromed and the “Steal Your Face” logo was embroidered on the rear deck. The crew member who gave this car to me told me that he drove Jerry Garcia and other band members around in it for decades and that they all had some great adventures in her. This car has been a beloved part of the Grateful Dead Family for thirty-three years and it was used at some point as the inspiration for artwork on a Grateful Dead backstage pass. -Former runner

Large 26.5x40.25” display on heavy poster stock displays a copy of the just released Stanley Mouse’s designed Terrapin Station album cover affixed with two sided poster tape and metal studs, and ties the album to the concert date. A burning heart with the all-seeing eye atop a flaming skull bearing the standard White Rose image from the mid-sixties blotter sheets designed and dipped by Owsley Stanley. In a recent interview Mouse stated that Owsley told him that the White Rose was the inner circle’s code mark for only the very purest and potent LSD crystal. And like the old Hobo signs of days gone by the White Rose because a mark where people knew that good acid could be found easily. Enlightened people traveling the county would see Mouse’s little one inch White Rose stickers on walls in head shops usually, but also very often in bars, coffee shops and even Denny’s. The skull rests atop a Jester’s belled collar bib, representing the Prankster in Mouse, and to remind viewers of this artwork not to believe everything that artists sometimes intentionally create to trick and/or fool us - as you have just been tricked and fooled by Stanley Mouse if you are buying any of this crap he just made up to write this description! The image is designed by San Andreas Fault, printing credited to the Paisley Penguin and is catalogued as AOR4.93. Of special interest is the fact that this copy of the poster exhibits no additional hand written dates or notations. The printing of this piece named only the Tuesday July 14 show and omitted any reference to an additional show on Thursday, July 16. The vast majority of distributed copies of this poster have the notation “July 14 & 16” or “and Thursday” added in pencil to the face of the poster, presumably by the promoter. The poster offered in this group lot omits any such added reference. The additional handwritten “July 14 & 16” pencil notation is plainly evident on the face of the handbill in the unprinted area above the printed “Dead” of “Grateful Dead”. The poster has been restored, flattened and mounted on linen.. (Estimated range – in this condition -- $800 - $1000).

Photograph by Herb Greene, thick cardboard stock poster is in good vintage condition; multiple tiny staple/pin holes around the outer edges, a 1" area of missing paper in the lower right corner, light toning, a small 2" white paint drip near Phil's leg in the lower left corner, a moderate amount of surface wear (numerous scattered miniscule surface scratches, tiny chips, scrapes, etc.), otherwise fine; this one features the classic 1966 Herb Greene portrait of the band modeling clothes for Haight Street boutique Mnasidika. As the story goes, "AOXOMOXOA," was an idea given to Rick Griffin by Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, when Griffin phoned him up and asked him for a possible title for the new Grateful Dead album cover Griffin was working on. Hunter suggested that he put a lot of the palindromes that Griffin had been playing with (words like 'mom,' etc.,) together to form a larger word” - Michael Erlewine. That is the long story. The short story is if you look closely at the lettering at the top of this poster it actually says quite clearly: “We Ate the Acid” and not “Grateful Dead”. Dimensions: 22” X 26.25”. An old JGB media file box marked “rush” - that was empty save for this really nice Jerry 8” X 10” photograph by a wonderfully skilled unknown photographer. This came from old JGB files located at the San Rafael office when gifted to a former long-time employee. These are production materials that were cut, tossed, sailed across the office… taped, glued, blow dried, hair sprayed, clear nail polish laid flat on the copier in sections to make the full flyer or whatever kinds of photos and things – definitely not something for the ‘minty-condition’ types - but more for the hands on workingman humanoids among us who prefer actual historical artifacts from the worlds most beloved musician of all time… than bright shiny objects trophy hunters seek. These are former employee owned pieces saved from a literal lifetime of unlimited devotion who has the unlimited respect among peers, friends and close friends.
