Two Forms of Identification: Primary Identification – photo ID issued by a governmental agency that includes name, address, race, sex and date of birth. Date of issue on ID must be 30 days prior to date of purchase. Secondary Identification – Must show an address identical to that shown on the primary identification. Acceptable forms of secondary identification are: Current lease Evidence of currently paid personal property tax or real estate tax A current utility or phone bill A current voter registration card A current bank check A current passport A current automobile registration A current hunting or fishing license Fees: $2.00 Virginia residents, $5.00 Non-Virginia residents Upon completion of forms and receipt of identification, the state police will be contacted, an approval number will be obtained. Upon receipt of the approval number, the firearm may be transferred. Multiple Handgun purchases: Purchases in excess of one handgun within a 30- day period may be made upon completion of an enhanced background check by special application to the State Police. Application shall be made in person to the Department of State Police. Non-Virginia residents are prohibited by federal law to purchase a handgun. Federal Firearm Licensed Dealers are exempt from Criminal History Check Requirements.
