Browning Model 1878 single shot falling block rifle 40-70 straight sharps caliber with 30” barrel marked “Browning Bros., Ogden U.T., Pat Oct 7th ’79” serial #313. The rifle remains in good to very good conditionshowing a brown patina finish, some scattered light erosion and pinprick pitting. Some marks on the barrel and normal frontier type use. The front sight is a blade made from antler in the original base. The rear sight is a ballard in its original dove tail. The bore is at least very good and the interior shows use but no abuse. The butt stock shows normal wear, some weathering, small losses, darkened areas andabout good overall. Only approx 500 Browning rifles were made and they were one of the few arms fully made on the frontier. They were favorites of Mormon pioneers headed west and most that have been found have been well used. Estimated that less than one hundred still exist. Est.;$15,000-$30,000.
