Rare Pair of Consecutively Pre-War Serialized Walther Experimental Model PP Pistols with Dual Safeti

Lot # 1476 (Sale Order: 477 of 889)

Rare Pair of Consecutively Pre-War Serialized Walther Experimental Model PP Pistols with Dual Safeties in 22 LR -A) Documented Pre-War Experimental Model PP Pistol

Rare Pair of Consecutively Pre-War Serialized Walther Experimental Model PP Pistols with Dual Safeties in 22 LR -A) Documented Pre-War Experimental Model PP Pistol
This is a rare example of a pair of consecutively numbered Walther Experimental model PPs with the dual safety levers. The "A" pistol is described and shown in the book: "Walthers Model PP and PPK Vol I" on page 75. The Walther Model PP design has seen numerous changes and variations throughout its entire production cycle. Consequently this is an extremely rare and collectable model in that it's chambered in "22LR" but also has the rare "dual safety" design. Reportedly there are several of this dual safety design produced with these being the "only" consecutively pair known. The dual safety was strictly experimental, intended to test the marketability for commercial sales and the German military. It proved undesirable as it required more parts and complicated machining and did not seem to be an improvement over the standard safety. Both of these examples have small safety lever projecting form the front of the left grip panel with the frames marked "S and F". The left side of both slides have the standard "Walther" inside a banner followed by the two-line Walther factory address, patent markings, Cal 22, followed by Mod PP. They are both marked inside the slide with the last three digits of the serial number. The right side of the slide, chamber area and front edge of the barrel are all stamped with the single pre-war commercial "crown/N" proof. The right side of the frames are marked with the vertically stamped serial number "942559" and "942560", respectively. They are fitted with standard checkered Walther banner grips and Walther marked magazines.

Extremely Rare and Fully Documented, Historic Robert Lubstein/Erel Maker Marked World War II Luftwaf

Lot # 1477 (Sale Order: 478 of 889)

Extremely Rare and Fully Documented, Historic Robert Lubstein/Erel Maker Marked World War II Luftwaffe General Officer Summer Cap, From the Family of General der Flieger Friedrich Christiansen

Born in the town of Wyk auf Fohr in 1879, Friedrich Christiansen was born into a family with a long history of sailing and joined the Merchant Marine at the age of 16. During his nautical career, he came up to the rank of Second Officer on the Preussen, (then-largest sailing vessel in the world), but later felt the call of aviation and departed the sea to serve as a flight instructor. This departure would be short lived, as the outbreak of WWI caused Christiansen to be called to service as a naval aviator. During the war, he was credited with 13 confirmed aerial kills and attributed 21. He also performed bombing runs on England and was one of only three German naval aviators (and the only seaplane pilot) to be awarded the Pour le Merite (a.k.a. The Blue Max, signature award of Germany's top flyers). When the Nazis came into power, he was called back to government work, joined the Reichs Aviation Ministry, became chief of the National Socialist Flying Corps, and became General der Flieger (General of Aviators) in the Luftwaffe in 1939. Starting in 1940, he was appointed as the supreme commander of German forces occupying the Netherlands, all while running the NSFK until 1943 and directly commanding the 25th Army from 1944 to 1945. At the end of WWII, he was made to answer for his actions during the occupation and served 3 years. Christiansen was released in 1951 and died in 1972. The cap is a Robert Lubstein "Erel-Sonderklasse" Luftwaffe summer pattern, with a white cloth crown on a black band trimmed with golden wire, a gold bullion eagle over a black, silver and white bullion cockade in a golden wreath, gold cord chinstrap and a black leather visor. The bullion insignia of the most spectacular quality. The interior is lined in white rayon, with Erel markings on the sweatband and printed beneath the diamond, a pair of "F" and "C" oval tags (to denote the special order - his initials) on the left side of the band, and a paper "EREL/Stirnschutz" label stitched to the diamond. This visor cap was introduced to the market by Christiansen's family (his daughter, Barbara) via Hermann Historica Auctions on May 27, 1995 lot # 6121, which also sold a number of presentation items to Christiansen including a piece from Hermann Goering and other important items. The first two lots 6115 & 6116 were WWII portraits of Christiansen. Supporting paperwork and file on this from Hermans Historica are included with this lot.

Class: Other

Very fine, totally original, with a few small stains on the exterior and minor tears of the sweatband. Aside from one or two minor scuffs the decoration is solid. An extremely rare Luftwaffe General Officer Cap, with interesting historical association.

Extremely Rare Documented Experimental Walther Mod. MP ("MP/PP") Semi-Automatic Pistol

Lot # 1480 (Sale Order: 481 of 889)

Extremely Rare Documented Experimental Walther Mod. MP ("MP/PP") Semi-Automatic Pistol

Experimental Walther Mod. MP ('referred to as the "MP/PP" by Buxton and Rankin) 9 mm parabellum semi-automatic pistol. This pistol is essentially a scaled up version of the Mod. PP utilizing the same blowback locking mechanism, chambered for the 9 mm parabellum cartridge. The Mod. 'MP/PP' was manufactured between 1929 and 1932. Known serial numbers range from 5004-5009. Only four Mod. "MP/PP" pistols are known to exist. This pistol is illustrated and described on pages 38 and 39 of "THE P.38 PISTOL, VOLUME ONE" by Warren Buxton. The pistol has the same general configuration as the Mod. PP with a 5 inch barrel. The pistol features an exposed ring hammer, 90 degree safety lever and magazine release on the left side of the frame. The target type rear sight is adjustable and the front sight is fixed. The slide has a serrated rib between the front and rear sights. The pistol has a cartridge cocking indicator similar to that on the Mod. PP. A military style lanyard loop is fitted to the frame behind the magazine well. The eight-round magazine is blued and unmarked. The left side of the slide bears the Walther Banner followed by: "Waffenfabrik Walther, Zella-Mehlis (Thur)/Walther's Patent Cal. 9 m/m" in two-lines. The model designation: "Mod. M.P." is located between the factory legend and the slide serrations. The serial number (5009) is marked vertically on the right side of the frame behind the trigger. "Crown/N" commercial proofmarks are stamped on the right side of the barrel at the chamber and muzzle, and on the right side of the slide below the ejection port. All components have a high polish, commercial blue finish. This pistol has been extensively illustrated and described in "THE P.38 PISTOL" by Buxton, "WALTHER VOLUME III" by Rankin, and Kresten's "WALTHER, EINE DEUTSCHE LEGEND".

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Excellent plus. The pistol retains 98% of the original Walther, high polish, commercial blue finish. There is very minor edge wear on the slide at the muzzle and some very slight handling marks on the right side of the slide near the ejection port. All factory markings and proofmarks are extremely sharp. The walnut grips are also excellent plus and the checkering is extremely sharp. This is an extremely rare, historic, and well-documented pistol in exceptional condition.

Rare Mauser HSC Pre-Production Low Grip Screw Variation Prototype Semi-Automatic Pistol

Lot # 1481 (Sale Order: 482 of 889)

Rare Mauser HSC Pre-Production Low Grip Screw Variation Prototype Semi-Automatic Pistol

This is a rare early "pre-production" low grip screw variant Prototype Mauser Model HSc pistol. This example does not have the standard serial number in the "700,000" range on the front of the lower frame as was done throughout normal production. It is actually marked with only a single letter "V" on the lower front of the frame with the serial number "V" as noted on the underside of the frame behind the magazine release button. Consequently it is considered as a pre-production model. This rare Mauser HSc was probably produced in late 1938 or sometime in 1939 during the early developmental stage and is actually one of only a handful known in this range. The left side of slide is marked with the early factory markings of a: "Mauser Banner" logo, followed by, "MAUSER-WERKE A.G. OBERNDORF a.N./MOD. HSC KAL. 7,65mm", with an early "Eagle/N" commercial proof on the lower right side trigger guard bow. The slide and barrel are not serial numbered (which would be correct for a early pre-production pistol) however both are proofed on the under with the single early intertwined "R/W" Mauser factory proof mark. The top of the slide has the real early smooth concave, milled sighting slot on top with the standard fixed front sight and a dovetailed rear sights. It is fitted with a set of checkered walnut grips and comes with one early Mauser marked commercial magazine.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Excellent with 97% of the original blued finish overall with edge and high spot wear with minor thinning and speckling on the grip straps. The walnut grips are in very fine condition with distinct checkering on both sides showing light wear and a chip missing from top left grip with most of the original varnish remaining overall. A rare example of a Prototype Mauser HSc pistol.

Documented Mauser HSc Nazi Navy Marked Semi-Automatic Pistol with Spare Magazine and Holster

Lot # 1482 (Sale Order: 483 of 889)

Documented Mauser HSc Nazi Navy Marked Semi-Automatic Pistol with Spare Magazine and Holster

This is an example of a German Navy issue commercial Mauser HSc pistol rig. This example has the second style frame with the higher grip screw but still retains its early high polish commercial blue finish. It has the early commercial Eagle/N proof mark on the right side of the trigger guard and the early style German Navy "Eagle/Swastika/M" property markings engraved on the front grip strap. Both the Eagle/N proof and the early Nazi Navy property mark indicates this pistol was purchased directly from Mauser as a commercial pistol and then paragraphed with the Navy markings at one of the Navy depots. The left side of slide is marked with the standard Mauser Banner followed by, "MAUSER-WERKE A.G. OBERNDORF a.N./MOD. HSC/KAL. 7,65mm". The early serial number, "707917" is located at the bottom edge of the front grip strap with the last four digits of the number (7917) on the under side of the barrel. It is listed by serial number on page 176 of A X is Pistols, The Pistols of Germany and Hen Allie, in Two World Wars Volume II by Jan C. Still, (He identifies it as a Variation 2.)The slide has the standard concave milled sighting slot on top with the standard fixed sights. It has the standard checkered walnut grips and is complete with two Mauser marked magazines (with no serial number or proof marks) and a black holster with a questionable Navy proof on the backside. Inside the flap of the holster it is stamped "W.Sch Pol/Hamburg" and on the back it has a single Eagle/M proof stamp.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Excellent with 95% of the original blue finish overall with high spot wear and some minor spotting in a couple areas with blue loss on the front edges of the slide. The grips are in very good condition overall with a darker color overall with light wear across the tops of the checkering. The holster is in fine condition with tight stitching overall. The markings are clear and distinct.

Extremely Rare Documented Experimental Nazi BSW Gas Operated 9mm Semi-Automatic Pistol

Lot # 1483 (Sale Order: 484 of 889)

Extremely Rare Documented Experimental Nazi BSW Gas Operated 9mm Semi-Automatic Pistol

This is an example of a very rare Berlin Suhler Waffen prototype gas operated semi-automatic pistol in "9mm". This pistol is described and photographed on page 25 of "The P.38 Pistol Volume I" by Buxton (notice the shape of the milled panels of the frame). This pistol was intended for service use and to compete with the Walther HP pistol. It is assumed that the pistol was too complex and too difficult to manufacture to make it a viable competitor. The pistol has a very unique delayed blow-back, double action type design with some very unique and interesting features. The first is that the frame is actually constructed out of three separate pieces. The center section is all aluminum with a steel reinforcing plate on each side. The three pieces are pinned together with a push-pin design that allows the pistol to be quickly and easily assembled, with no real tools and probably made from low cost materials. The other interesting aspect is that on the underside of the slide, at the front end of the frame is a large, single cocking lever. This lever locks into a lug on the front underside of the slide, with the front edge of the lever, actually sitting into a cutout area on the underside of the barrel. To cock the pistol you have to depress a small lever on the front of the trigger guard bow, pull down this front locking lever and then draw the slide reward. This will charge the pistol. Then during the actually firing/cycle of the pistol, this front underside cutout area of the barrel has a small port cut into it that forces the front of this cocking lever downward to release the slide which would allow the action to cycle. The interesting aspect is that the locking lug on the front inside area of the slide (noted above) actually holds the slide closed until the bullet passes the port on the barrel, where the resulting gases drives this front locking lever downward. This mechanism delays the slide movement until the bullet passes the port and exits the barrel. Obviously this is an improvement as it would improve accuracy some what, but also allows the frame to be constructed from low strength materials, e.g. the three piece frame, as the frame would not have to take the stress imparted from the recoil into a standard blow-back pistol. Very interesting and unique design, that was probably way ahead of its time! There is no serial number or proof marks are on the pistol. There are only two known examples, each having minor differences in features and milling pattern. The top of the slide has a raised serrated sight rib with a blade front sight and drift adjustable rear sight, with shallow grip serrations on the front end of the slide. There is a small sliding safety on the left side of the frame with the frame mounted push button magazine release. The pistol has a flared front grip strap and corresponding magazine floor plate. It is fitted with a set of checkered walnut grips. It is complete with the one original magazine. The pistol has an all blued steel components with the center section of the frame anodized. A very interesting pistol.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Fine as professionally restored with the lower frame and front locking lever still retaining 95% of their anodized finish overall with the slide, having an old reblued finish, which is thinning mixed with some brown patina areas. The recheckered grips are in very fine condition with nice sharp distinct checkering. Mechanically fine. A very interesting and unique prototype Berlin-Suhler Waffen.

Rare Walther Model PP Factory Cutaway Pistol in Scarce 9 mm Kurz

This is an unique example of an original Walther Model PP factory cutaway pistol that is chambered in the scarce 9 mm Kurz that is equipped with the bottom magazine release feature. Exceptional and Historic Nazi 1939 Mauser Factory Engraved and Gold Plated Presentation Luger Semi-A

Lot # 1489 (Sale Order: 490 of 889)

Exceptional and Historic Nazi 1939 Mauser Factory Engraved and Gold Plated Presentation Luger Semi-Automatic Pistol Given to the Nazi Ambassador Franz von Papen by Foreign Minister of the Reich Joachim von Ribbentrop with Authentication from a Mauser Factory Consultant

This is an exceptional example of a one-of-a-kind WWII German Mauser factory engraved and gold plated Luger pistol. This Luger pistol was owned and presented by two prominent Nazi party members with long time association or affiliations with Adolf Hitler and his rise to power in the early 1930s. Joachim von Ribbentrop was the son of a German Army officer who was born in Wesel, Germany in 1893. He served in WWI with the 125th Hussar Regiment where he won the Iron Cross. After being seriously wounded in 1917, Ribbentrop joined the Germany War Ministry and became a member of the German Delegation that attended the Paris Peace Conference after WWI. In May 1932, he joined the NSDAP, National Socialist German Workers Party, where he quickly rose in rank and eventually became Hitler's foreign affairs advisor in 1933. Later, the NSDAP evolved into the Nazi Party. He was eventually appointed as the ambassador to London. He was instrumental in the various pre-war negotiations with France and Great Britain and was also instrumental in the negotiations and signing of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, a treaty of non-aggression signed in 1939 between the Soviet Union and Germany that kept the Soviets at bay until the Germans broke the agreement in June of 1941. In June 1945, he was arrested and charged with war crimes but denied any knowledge or involvement in the German concentration camps and racial extermination policies. He was later tried during the Nuremburg Trials, found guilty, and executed in October 1946. He was the first to be hanged. Franz von Papen was born in Werl, Germany in 1879, the son of a wealthy landowner. In 1914, he was posted to Washington as a military attaché; however, in 1915, he was accused of being a saboteur and was forced to leave the U.S. He joined the German Army and served as a general staff officer at the outbreak of WWI. After WWI, he joined the Catholic Centre Party (BVP) and in 1921 was elected to the Reichstag. Two years later, he purchased a controlling interest in the leading newspaper "Germania." He attempted to use the paper as means to promote his right-wing policies and was later ousted. He remained a low level political figure until May 1932 when he was appointed as chancellor by Hindenburg. Later, he lifted the ban on the Sturm Abteilung (SA) and gained considerable support from the Nazi Party. Then von Papen persuaded Hindenburg to appoint Hitler as the new chancellor and became the vice-chancellor. After supporting Hitler after the Night of the Long Knives, he was appointed as ambassador to Austria in 1934-1939 with an additional posting to Turkey in 1939-1944. In 1945, he was charged with conspiring to start WWII but was found not guilty. In 1947, the German Government charged him with crimes and offences while Hitler was in power, and he was sentenced to eight years in prison. He served only two and was released in 1949. He died in 1969 in Obersasbach. This pistol was procured for the German Ministry as a standard Commercial Police Model and has the sear safety over the side plate along with the "eagle/C" police proof on the right side of the barrel extension and the standard "crown/U" proof on the left side of the barrel extension. The chamber area is stamped 1939 for the year of manufacture with the standard Mauser Banner logo on the front toggle. The entire pistol has been meticulously engraved with traditional German oak leaf, acorn, and scroll engraving with a punch dot backgrounds for shading that covers 99% of the exposed surfaces of the pistol. The only noted area that is not engraved is the very upper portion of the rear grip strap. The engraving on this pistol was obviously performed by a master engraver given the overall layout and attention to detail is fantastic and meticulous. The side plate also has a small redition of the coat of arms of the von Papen family. The dark walnut grips have been hand carved in a large oak leaf and acorn pattern, and the left grip carries a small 1 1/2 X 2 1/2 inch inscription plate that reads: "Seiner Exzellenz/Herrn Botshafter Franz von Papen/in tiefster Verehrung/uberreicht von Joachim von Ribbentrop/Aussenminister des Deutchen Reiches." This translates to: "His Excellency/the Honorable Ambassador Franz von Papen/in deepest dedication/given by Joachim von Ribbentrop/Foreign Minister of the German Reich." This Luger is accompanied by a copy of a short letter dated 1986 from Dr. Rolf Gminder, a consultant to the Mauser-Werkes factory who had viewed the pistol, noting that it was fully engraved in a very high quality style probably executed in Suhl, Thuring

Desirable G.A. Hoffmann 1937 Dated Enlisted/NCO Visor Cap Marked to the Regiment General Goering wit

Lot # 1491 (Sale Order: 492 of 889)

Desirable G.A. Hoffmann 1937 Dated Enlisted/NCO Visor Cap Marked to the Regiment General Goering with Map Case

Constructed from blue/gray wool in the crown with a black band, the exterior of the cap is appointed with white waffenfarbe piping (HG Ground Troop Division) along the edges, alloy eagle and wreathed cockade badges on the front, and a black patent leather chinstrap and sweatband. The latter is finished on the underside in green with an impressed checkerboard pattern. The interior is lined in brown cloth with a tan sweatband, with the sweat diamond covering the silver Hoffmann markings as well as "1937" and "56 1/2" black ink stamps. A small paper tag in a slot in the diamond reads "Kober/17./Regt. G.G.", and the inside of the left side of the sweatband is ink stamped "II. Rgt. Gen. Goring/7./(illegible)" and "1". This unit, in addition to performing bodyguard duty and anti-aircraft defense for Hitler himself eventually morphed into a division that participated in North Africa, reforming in Sicily fighting in Italy as the Fallschirm Panzer Division HG. In 1944, the division was transferred to Poland and remained on the Eastern front until the end of the war. Included with the cap is a brown leather map case, which bears a faint "R.G.G. I/II" stamp inside the flap next to "WILH.BRAND/HEIDELBERG/1939". No firm identification has been made on "Kober", though records indicate the existence of a Panzer Leutnant by that last name active in Italy, where the Division was known to have fought.

Class: Other

The cap is in very fine, totally original condition, showing a few light stains on the exterior and light handling marks overall. The pins from the eagle badge are visible through the lining, with high legibility to the liner markings and minor sweat stains. The map case is good, with cracking of the straps, edge scuffs, and overall strong stitching and supple leather.

Historic World War II Nazi Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves

Lot # 1492 (Sale Order: 493 of 889)

Historic World War II Nazi Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves

Introduced in 1939 and 1940, respectively, the Knight's Cross and the Oak Leaves were part of the same continuity of awards as the Iron Cross. As a result of the German system of escalating awards and the intense and drawn-out nature of World War II, higher tiers of the Cross needed to be introduced to properly recognize the fighting men in Germany. Barring very rare exceptions, a man receiving the Oak Leaves would first have to earn the 2nd Class Iron Cross, 1st Class Iron Cross and the Knight's Cross requiring a significant duration of service and multiple acts of gallantry. Approximately 890 members of the Wehrmacht are known to have reached this level of achievement. In addition before the attempt on his life in July of 1944, Hitler was in the habit of personally awarding the Oak Leaves in ceremonies performed at his various field headquarters. Later in the war, yet higher decorations would be attached to the Knight's Cross (swords and diamonds) and finally the introduction of the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross (for all intents and purposes unissued; only Goering received one and it was later stripped from him), but for a time the Oak Leaves were the top valor award in the Third Reich. Measuring 1 7/8 inches across and 2 1/8 inches tall including the hanger, the front bears a swastika over "1939", with "1813" on the rear black painted interior and uncovered silver border with "800" stamped on the rear just below the hanging ring and a silver hanger. The red, white, and black ribbon is 7 3/4 inches long with a pair of 9 1/2 inch long matching colored ties, supporting the Oak Leaf, which is marked the silver oak leaf ornament in the center with "21" and "900" stamped on the rear. Information supplied by the consignor lists the Cross as being Steinhauer & Lueck "Type A" production about 1941-1942, with the oak leaves being Godet about 1943-1945; this difference in dating is appropriate for a Knight's Cross and Oak Leaves earned the traditional way. No information on the original recipient is available at this time. The consignor was told that the Knight's Cross was bought at a hotel buy and was confiscated from an officer being taken in April of 1945. The ribbon was added afterwards for display purposes.

Class: Other

Exceptionally fine, totally original showing an attractive aged, untouched dark patina on the edges of the cross and some light wear on the swastika. The oak leaves exhibit even wear as with the ribbon showing some light stains. Overall a very fine "no apology" Knight's Cross.

Rare DWM Model 1914 Commercial Luger Semi-Automatic Pistol with Unique Serial Number 73501

Lot # 1493 (Sale Order: 494 of 889)

Rare DWM Model 1914 Commercial Luger Semi-Automatic Pistol with Unique Serial Number 73501

This is an outstanding example of a very early production DWM Model 1914 Commercial Luger pistol. The key aspect in determining this as a true Model 1914 commercial lies in the serial numbers. The noted 1914 serial number range runs from approximately 71,500 to 73,500, with the 1923 Commercial range starting at approximately 73,500 to 90,000. So based on that could this actually be the last 1914 Commercial Luger model manufactured? This isn't locked in concrete as there are some overlaps in serial numbers between the 1913 and 1914 Commercial serial number ranges. This Luger has the 1914 stock lug, and is fitted with the hold-open device, new style 1914 frame with the coil spring. The chamber area is blank with the rear toggle having the DWM logo markings. The left side of the barrel extension breechblock and front toggle all have the early horizontal "Crown/N" proofs. The "Crown/N" is also found on the underside of the barrel. It is correctly numbered as a commercial Luger with the full five-digit serial number stamped on the underside of the barrel and the front of the frame with the last two digits (01) on the recoil lug. The remaining parts are all correctly stamped with the last two digits (01) of the serial number. This example is chambered in 9 mm Luger and it has the standard extractor and safety marking. It is complete with a nickel plated magazine with an unnumbered wooden base. It is fitted with standard walnut grips (numbered "69" under left panel) and has the higher polish commercial rust blue finish with straw colored smaller parts.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Excellent with 98% of the original blue finish overall with most of the restrawed colors. The replacement walnut grips are also in very fine condition with nice sharp distinct checkering. Mechanically excellent. A super rare early, early DWM Model 1914 Luger pistol.

DWM Luger Model 1902 Carbine Rig Complete with Matching Shoulder Stock and Monogrammed Leather Carry

Lot # 1496 (Sale Order: 497 of 889)

DWM Luger Model 1902 Carbine Rig Complete with Matching Shoulder Stock and Monogrammed Leather Carrying Case

This is an excellent example of a late production DWM Model 1902 Luger Carbine. This example is in exceptional condition that shows very minor handling marks and is complete with an original unaltered DWM factory matching numbered walnut shoulder stock and a rare early leather carrying case, just for the Luger pistol. These carbines were an early attempt by DWM to a produce a light weight rifle substitute, to compete specifically with the Mauser Broomhandle carbines. There were only a total of 2500 of this model ever produced in two serial number blocks with this specific pistol being in the later block. These early carbines all have that distinctive look with the early features such as: the 11 3/4 inch barrel, with the factory installed hanger mounted on the front end of the frame. This holds the small walnut forend which houses a small spring loaded accelerator mechanism inside, that assists the pistol to function correctly during the cycling phase, by helping to return the barrel/upper receiver into battery due to the additional weight of the barrel. All these early 1902 Carbines have all the rare and desirable early features such as: the long old style frame, flat mainspring, grip safety, dished toggles with toggle lock on the right side, and the recessed/flat breech bolt with the small spring extractor. The top of the chamber is blank and the front toggle has the DWM logo. The full serial number (24233) is correctly stamped on the underside of the frame extension, and the underside of the barrel. Inside the forend cutout it is also correctly stamped with number "233". The last two digits of the serial number (33) are correctly marked on the various small parts. The grips are unnumbered, however the right side marked with a small "*" asterisk proof, on the back. The stock is completely original and has a black horn butt plate, lower sling swivel with an original attaching iron that is numbered "233" on top. The magazine has a nickel plated body with the correct wood base and marked with only a single small ordnance bomb type proof. These pistols all have a rust blued finish with a straw color on the various small parts. As noted above, this Luger Carbine is complete with a very rare early leather holster that has the initials "J.W.H." stamped on the front flap. The back side has a double ring hanger for a should strap which is missing. This leather cases was probably made in the same time as the carbine and likely in the US as it has block letters. Surviving leather holsters are rare today as they usually received all the wear and tear in lieu of the Luger.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Excellent with 97% of the original blue finish overall with high spot wear only with the smaller parts retaining 75% of their original straw colors with slightly more in the protected areas. The stock as noted has a matching attaching iron that retains 98% of its blued finish. The stock is in excellent condition showing only minor handling marks. The checkered walnut grips are very fine condition with nice distinct checkering overall showing only minor handling marks on the sides. The forend is also in very fine condition with a nice light brown color with nice distinct checkering on the sides showing light wear across the tops of the checkering, with several minor handling marks on the sides in front of the checkered panels. The sling swivel on the forend is a little loose as its missing the small nut on the inside. The holster is also in very fine plus condition with nice tight stitching overall showing minor scuffing on the toe area and the top rear area of the flap. A super high condition all matching DWM Model 1902 Luger carbine rig.

Ultra Rare Walther Self-Loading Sheetmetal Prototype Rifle Serial Number 3

Lot # 1497 (Sale Order: 498 of 889)

Ultra Rare Walther Self-Loading Sheetmetal Prototype Rifle Serial Number 3

This is a unique example of an original, semi-automatic Walther experimental/prototype self-loading gas operated rifle serial number "3". This "predecessor" model was developed by the Walther factory prior to the German Ordnance Ministry evaluating both the Walther Mkb.42(W) and the C. G. Haenel Mk.42(H) assault rifles(and was used by designers of the aforementioned MKB42(w)). Both used the early stamped sheetmetal designs with the Haenel design being later developed into the MP43/44 assault rifles. The Walther factory evidently went on to also develop a self-loading sheetmetal rifle, only chambered for the powerful 7.92 mm Mauser cartridge. This design is very unique in that it is comprised to 2-3 different sections that were riveted/pinned together. The front section is very similar to the Mkb.42(W) with an extruded barrel jacket, which is keyed into the integral front sight base/bayonet lug assembly that was held on by the muzzle nut. The rear half of the receiver is also a stamped sheet metal housing which covers the rear half of the rifle, which is riveted onto the stamped sheetmetal trigger guard and box magazine. The buttstock is also very unique in that is hollowed out inside and it attached to the rear of the receiver via a through bolt type arrangement, where the attaching mechanism is inserted into the rear of the buttstock and then screwed onto the rear of the receiver. The large hole in the buttstock is covered by the stamped sheetmetal buttplate. Internally the front and rear halves of the rifle are joined to a machined internal receiver that acts as the rear barrel trunnion/locking lugs and rear support for the sheetmetal receiver. This piece was the real key to this design as it is one of the very few all machined and critical parts on the weapon. The other real interesting feature is that inside the upper receiver it has a sliding sheetmetal bolt carrier to which the actual machined bolt body has been riveted or spot weld to. This sheetmetal bolt carrier extends from the larger bulbous middle section of the barrel jacket to the rear of the receiver opening, approximately 12 inches long. It does not have a hold open device and has a stamped sheetmetal safety lever on the right side. As noted in the pictures, it is obvious that the Walther factory was experimenting with an early detachable box magazine. This magazine design would eventually evolve into the standard box magazines for the G/K43 series of rifles. It has a standard blade front sight dovetailed into the front sight base with a machined rear sight base pinned on to the top of the center section of the rifle. The rear sight base is fitted with a standard G/K 43 rear sight tangent graduated from 100-1200 meters. The only markings on the entire rifle are on the left side of the upper receiver which are: "Waffenfabrik Zella-Mehlis/WALTHER" (inside the traditional banner logo) followed by No.3." and the left side of the buttstock which is stamped with: "GEW: 4,350 KG/LANGE: 1120" (indicating weight and length), both would indicate to this describer that this was strictly a prototype/trials rifle intended to prove out a sheetmetal design, which had to meet specific German Army field requirements for weight and length. A similar example is photographed on page 134 of Walther Pistols and Rifles by W. H. B Smith. Another example is on page 236 and 237 of Walther, A German Legend by Manfred Kersten. He identifies this example as an A115.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent with 98% of the original blue finish overall with only minor blue loss on the side of the bolt carrier due to cycling the action. The buttstock has some minor handling marks on the sides with the clear markings noted above. An exceptionally rare Walther experimental/prototype self-loading rifle.

B) 1936 Dated Mauser Banner Luger Semi-Automatic Pistol
This is an excellent example of a 1936 dated Mauser Banner Commercial contract Luger Pistol chambered in 9mm Luger. It is dated "1936" over the chamber and the front toggle has the standard Mauser Banner logo. The left side of the barrel extension, underside of the barrel and left side of the breechblock are stamped with a single "crown/U" commercial proof acceptance mark with no other proofs on the pistol. It is in a very early commercial serial number range in the "V" block with the full serial number "3695" stamped on the front of the frame, the underside of the barrel and left side of the barrel extension. The partial serial number "95" is stamped on various small parts. It is fitted with an all blue unmarked magazine with an aluminum base that is marked "3695/v/Eagle 63". This scarce early commercial Luger has the late type hot salt blue finish, but still retained the earlier straw colored small parts and is fitted with checkered walnut grips. The rear of the pistol still retains the original leather pull thong, which is always missing from these pistols.
