Historically Significant Swiss Model 1894 Type IIB Experimental Mondragon Rifle in Rare 5.2 X 68 mm

Lot # 1611 (Sale Order: 612 of 889)

Historically Significant Swiss Model 1894 Type IIB Experimental Mondragon Rifle in Rare 5.2 X 68 mm Caliber

This is an exceptionally scarce example of an early Model 1894 Swiss/SIG experimental Type IIB Mondragon. This model can be identified/differentiated from the Type IIA, by the large "Lange" military type rear sight and the front barrel band that is designed for use with the Swiss bayonet. This is such an extremely rare and all original rifle that very few examples even exist today with almost all known specimen contained in European museums. This series of rifle was actually a further development of the original 1893 Mondragon rifles that was made by the famous Swiss factory of SIG, in Neuhausen. These were based on the original 1893 designs of Colonel Mondragon with improvements, that were coupled with the very unique Swiss "5.2 X 68 mm" high velocity piston cartridge designed by the brilliant Swiss designer Col Edward "Eduard" Rubin, who was the director of the Swiss munitions factory at Thurn as well as the inventor of the full metal jacket. During the development of the M1893 rifle Col. Mondragon came into contact with Col. Rubin, who had actually been working on a small caliber high velocity cartridge. Both seized on the idea of using this new cartridge in the Model 1894. This rifle has several very early and unique features such as the 1) original "en bloc" type magazine, 2) a straight pull, rotary rifle bolt that employs three sets of five locking lugs; one set of locking lugs is position around the front and rear of the bolt body with an additional set around the cocking knob assembly; 3) a manual/automatic type switch mechanism located on the right side of the stock, is marked "A," "L," and "R." (as designed on the 1893 rifle) that allowed the rifle to be fired on a continuous, rapid fire type succession without pulling the trigger each time by simply cycling hand cycling the bolt back and forth. The idea was that if the soldier positioned the rifle butt under his right arm, left hand on the upper forend with his right hand on the bolt handle he could either charge and fire in rapid succession or use the same method in a defensive mode to fend off a frontal assault, by just pulling the bolt to the rear and slam it forward into battery and the rifle will fire. Certainly a very unique and forward thinking battle improvement for 1894! The designs of the Swiss Schmidt/Rubin and K31 series of rifles can clearly be seen on this rifle especially in the rotary locking bolts. The rifle itself has a two-piece stock with an all machined receiver and bolt group. The forend is a full length one-piece round Mannlicher style that completely encompasses the barrel. It is fitted with a one-piece, front barrel band that double for the front sight base and has the early Swiss bayonet lug underneath. The rear sight as noted is the larger military "Lange" style that is very unique in that it has two rear sight leafs; the front one was probably used as a battle sight for 100-300 meters. Next it has a second folding rear sight leaf that is marked "400" on the back side, obviously intended for shooting at 400 meters. Then top, left side of the base is calibrated from 600-2000 meters with the left side of the base marked for 1000, 1500, 2500 meters. It is fitted with a single sling swivel, mid way underneath the forend held on by two screws with a corresponding lower sling swivel on the butt. The cartridge that was designed for this rifle was the 5.2 X 68 mm, which is actually similar to the short bottle neck high velocity cartridges we have today chambered in 22 caliber, only this cartridge has a piston inside the case. The concept was that the cartridge contained an actual piston inside the case with the powder charge located below the piston. The top of the piston rod was positioned below the actual bullet and that once the primer and powder were ignited the pistol would drive the bullet at a hyper-velocity, muzzle velocity (remember at this time they were just developing smokeless powder) with most velocities around the 1,500-1,800 fps. An extremely unique rifle for the 1893/1894 time frame. The only real markings on the rifle are the serial number "98" which is stamped on the various parts to include the receiver, barrel, bolt assembly, magazine follower and cocking knob. The rear of the upper tang is stamped "FAB. D'ARMES/NEUHAUSEN". This rifle has an all walnut stock, full length forend and is fitted with one steel buttplate. It has an all blue metal finish except the bolt which is left bright. There is a small sticker or label on the right front barrel that is marked "L1/1031", which may indicate that this rifle was once in a museum. Certainly worth doing some research on it.

Class: Antique

Very fine with 80% of the faded original blue finish overall with wear on the edges and high spots

Scarce Webley & Scott Webley-Fosbery Model 1902 "Semi-Automatic" Revolver

Lot # 1612 (Sale Order: 613 of 889)

Scarce Webley & Scott Webley-Fosbery Model 1902 "Semi-Automatic" Revolver

Produced in limited quantities at the turn of the century, the Webley-Fosbery uses a novel recoil driven operating system. The pistol is divided into two chief components, an upper frame carrying the barrel, cylinder and the hammer, which is mated to the lower grip frame and single action trigger and disconnector assembly on a spring loaded track. On discharge the recoil energy drives the entire upper frame back along the track recocking the hammer and advancing the cylinder. While this mechanism combines many of the positive features of both a revolver and an automatic pistol, it did not catch on, and the revolver was supplanted by the automatic as the primary sidearm of the military, police and civilians. Blade front and notch rear sights, with the one line Birmingham address on the barrel rib, "WEBLEY FOSBERY" on the left side of the top strap and "455 CORDITE" next to the "winged bullet" trademark on the left side plate of the lower frame. The top strap is also marked "MADE IN ENGLAND." While Wilkinson had stopped producing firearms, they continued to sell, with Webley revolvers being popular item. While no research has been done the Wilkinson archives may still contain information on the original purchaser. The hammer is checkered on three sides, with Birmingham proofs on multiple components, a safety switch on the left side of the lower frame, a pair of checkered grips and a lanyard swivel on the butt.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Very fine. The revolver retains 85% period retailer applied high polished blue finish showing some extensive scattered thinning to a brown and some minor spotting. The grips are excellent with a few minor handling marks. Overall the checkering is crisp. Mechanically excellent.

Mauser Model 1878 11 mm Zig-Zag Single Action Revolver

This is a very fine example of a scarce early production Mauser Model 1878 revolver with the hinged frame. The revolver was nicknamed Zig-Zag because of the parallel and inclined grooves machined into the outside of the cylinder which actually rotate the cylinder during firing. As noted this is the hinged frame model with the ring-type cylinder locking lever/ejector located ahead of the trigger guard, and a safety latch on the left side of the frame that prevents the cylinder from rotating when engaged. The top of the barrel rib is marked "GEBR MAUSER & CIE OBERNDORF A/N. WURTTEMBERG. 1878 PATENT". The matching serial number is marked on the cylinder lock/ejector, rear cylinder face, on the frame, on the inside of each grip panel and "99" is marked on the hammer. The revolver has later style round-butt with the lanyard loop on the end of the butt. It is fitted with two piece hard rubber grips with a relief stylized floral and vine pattern around the edges and checkering in the center. These pistols have a rust blue finish with a bright heat blue on the cylinder, hammer lock, cylinder lock and trigger, and casehardened cylinder latch/ejector and hammer. These revolvers were later chambered in the 9mm Mauser cartridge, (forerunner to the 9mm Parabellum). Although very well manufactured and reliable, the Mauser Model 1878 was expensive to manufacture and had limited commercial sales. They remained in service with the German Army for 18-20 years until it was replaced by the 1896 Mauser pistol. Examples of this distinctive Mauser revolver are scarce.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The revolver retains 60% original blue finish with some scattered flaking, edge wear and a smooth mottled brown patina on the grip straps. The cylinder, trigger and safety levers retain 90% original bright nitre blue finish with some high point wear. The hammer retains almost all of the original vivid case colors and the latch/ejector has a smooth gray patina with some faded original case colors in protected areas. The hammer safety is a replacement. The grips are very fine with a sliver absent from the top of the right panel, otherwise crisp design and checkering. The markings are sharp. The action is excellent.

Birmingham Small Arms Boys Mark One Bolt Action Anti-Tank Rifle, 50 BMG Conversion

Lot # 1614 (Sale Order: 615 of 889)

Birmingham Small Arms Boys Mark One Bolt Action Anti-Tank Rifle, 50 BMG Conversion

Named for its designer, Captain Boys, the Boys Rifle was developed in the mid-1930s and was soon rendered obsolete for its original duty of tank hunting in the European Theater as developments in German armor left the proprietary 55 Boys cartridge behind. That said, the rifle was still put to good service through World War II, most famously by the Finns against the Soviets, as well as by the U.S. Marine Corps against the Japanese in the Pacific Theater, becoming one of the grandfathers of the modern "anti-material rifle" concept. Refitted with a 50 BMG chambered barrel in compliance with the National Firearms act, this Boys is equipped with a tubular steel muzzle brake, a hooded blade front sight, and a new fully adjustable Williams peep sight in lieu of the original 2-position peep, as well as a 4 5/8 inch segment of mounting rail (unknown style) fitted to the left side of the magazine well. Assorted British proofs are present, in addition to the model marking on the left side of the frame, with a turned bolt and a canted pistol grip. The barreled receiver is installed in a shock-absorbing rail frame stock, with an early pattern "T" bar bipod, a rear pistol grip with metal knuckle guard, hardwood cheekpiece, and a metal buttplate with integral oiler and a thick leatherette pad.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Fine as professionally rebarreled/refinished/refurbished, with some light handling marks overall and a few patches of spotting on and around the magazine. The stock is in equal condition. Mechanically excellent.

Webley & Scott Model 1913 Navy Marked Semi-Automatic Pistol with Holster and Shoulder Strap

Lot # 1624 (Sale Order: 625 of 889)

Webley & Scott Model 1913 Navy Marked Semi-Automatic Pistol with Holster and Shoulder Strap

The is a fine example of a late production, British Model 1913 semi-automatic pistol that was manufactured by Webley & Scott Company. This design was the result of years of development work by Webley & Scott in conjunction with the British Army, as they recognized the need for a semi-automatic pistol based on what every other country was developing. This pistol design was finally adopted by the British Navy as the Model 1913 MK 1 "N" for Royal Navy issue. Unfortunately the British Army decided to remain with the large British revolver as their service sidearm as it was more reliable and cheaper to manufacture. The left side of the slide is marked with the Webley & Scott "flying bullet" logo followed by "WEBLEY & SCOTT LTD/PISTOL SELF - LOADING 455 MARK 1 N/1916". The top of the breech block and slide are stamped with the rare "British Crown/GP/Crossed Pennant" proofs and "Crown/V" firing proofs with the British "Broad Arrow" and "British Army acceptance" proofs on the side of the frame, grip safety and hammer. The pistol is equipped with a fixed front sight and a drift adjustable rear sight. It is fitted with a set of black, checkered grips. It is fitted with a bottom release magazine with a lanyard stud and loop on the lower frame. A leather holster and shoulder strap is included with pistol. The holster is unique in that its made from one-piece of stamped leather that is folded over and riveted on the side with "10" steel and copper rivets. It has a sewn in toe in the bottom with a single strap for the flap with the shoulder strap sewn on the back. Inside the flap it is stamped with a single "Crown/Broad Arrow" proofmark.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

The grips are in very fine condition with nice distinct checkering on both sides of the grips mixed with light wear and nicks in the tops of the checkering in a few places. The holster is in fine condition overall with a nice medium brown color overall with only minor scratches and handling marks.
