Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 942)

Documented Special Order Winchester Second Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Desirable 30 Inch Extra Length Barrel

This is an example of a Special Order Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle that was manufactured in 1879. The rifle has the Second Model receiver with impressed oval "thumb print" dust cover and screw fastened dust cover rail. It is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter which describes it as: "Type: Rifle, Barrel Type: Octagon, Barrel Length: 30 inches", and "Trigger: Set". The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on March 28, 1879. The rifle has a blued barrel, magazine, forearm cap and receiver. The loading gate has a nitre blue finish. The hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut. The rare 30-inch octagon barrel has a dovetail mounted front sight with steel blade and a blank in the rear sight dovetail. A Lyman folding combination sight is mounted on the tang. The receiver has a factory single set trigger. The crescent buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860". The serial number "33402" is stamped in script numerals between the lever latch and the rear tang screw. The barrel and cartridge elevator, correctly, are not stamped with caliber markings. Winchester Model 1873 rifles with barrels longer than the standard 24-inch length are very scarce.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The barrel and magazine retain 80% of the original blue finish with light edge wear on the barrel and some thinning to the blue finish on the magazine tube. 75% of the blue finish is present on the forearm cap. There is finish loss on the high points and forward portions on the receiver but nearly all of the blue finish remains on the side plates and dust cover. 90% of the original nitre blue finish remains on the loading gate. The sides of the hammer and lever have strong case colors. The case colors have silvered on the top of the hammer, bottom of the lever and crescent buttplate. The barrel legend is crisp. The walnut stock and forearm are both in very good condition with minimal handling and storage wear but have been expertly refinished. This is an attractive example of a Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with special order set-trigger and rare 30-inch barrel.

New Haven Arms Co. First Model Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 5 (Sale Order: 5 of 942)

New Haven Arms Co. First Model Henry Lever Action Rifle

This is a solid example of a desirable First Model Henry Rifle that was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. in 1863. The barrel has a German silver blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight graduated from one to nine hundred yards. The top of the brass frame has a dovetail slot positioned towards the hammer. The top barrel flat is stamped "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT.16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS. CO. NEWHAVEN. CT" ahead of the rear sight and the serial number "2658" is stamped at the breech. The serial number is also stamped on the inside of the buttplate, on the shanks of both buttplate screws, in the upper stock tang inlet and the left side of the lower tang. The left side of the barrel has a sling loop and the left side of the buttstock has a sling swivel. Mounted with a smooth straight grip stock. The brass butt plate has the early rounded profile heel. Experts believe that most Henry Rifles manufactured before 1865 saw Civil War service. The Ordnance Department purchased about 900 Henry Rifles in 1863-1864 for issue to the 1st D.C. Cavalry Regiment and a small number in 1865 for issue to the Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiments. The majority of Henry Rifles were privately purchased by individual Federal soldiers who appreciated the rifle's firepower and advanced design. Most of these soldiers were in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky regiments in the Army of the Cumberland. Some western regiments, like the 66th Illinois Infantry, were primarily armed with privately purchased Henry Rifles.

Class: Antique

Very good. The barrel and magazine have a smooth dark patina overall. The markings are crisp. The brass has an attractive aged patina. Traces of original case colors remain on the hammer (in the face). The wood is also very good with a minor surface chip missing near the stock toe, a couple barely noticeable hairline stress cracks near the upper tang and some minor pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically fine. This Henry rifle will fill the gap in your collection very well!

Desirable Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Musket with Unique Cartouche

Lot # 6 (Sale Order: 6 of 942)

Desirable Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Musket with Unique Cartouche

Manufactured in 1872, this is a desirable and fine example of a martially inspected Winchester Model 1866 lever action musket. The crisp script letter cartouche ("GHJ") is stamped on the left side of the buttstock. The Winchester Model 1866 musket was not documented to have ever been obtained by the U.S. military, but was sold to foreign militaries (France, Turkey, Mexico and Prussia). The cartouche, which is inside a ribbon, is indicative of "AOS" cartouches found on Argentine proofed 1866 carbines in the 135,000 to 148,000 serial number range. According to noted Winchester expert George Madis, "To date, no concrete evidence has appeared to explain the meaning of [AOS] markings." The same can be said about the cartouche found on this musket. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address/patent dates ahead of the rear sight and a small letter "J" at the breech. Fitted with a square base front sight/bayonet lug and a folding ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards. It has the 7/8 magazine tube with three barrel bands. The middle barrel bands has a sling loop and the corresponding loop is located on the underside of the buttstock. The serial number is marked behind the trigger. The lower tang is marked with the small letters "PS." The wood is nicely figured straight grain American walnut with 3/4 length forearm and straight grip stock. The buttstock is fitted with a brass buttplate featuring a trap compartment. The four piece cleaning rod is included.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The musket retains 70% plus original blue finish with the balance thinning to a brown. The crisp brass has a highly attractive aged patina. The loading gate retains 60% original nitre blue. The hammer and lever have patterns of case colors with the balance a smooth dark brown patina. The reoiled wood is fine with a couple gouges from the barrel bands, a repaired chip near the buttplate tang and a few minor dings and scratches. The cartouche is sharp. The action is tight.

New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic Carbine with Letter from George Madis

Lot # 8 (Sale Order: 8 of 942)

New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic Carbine with Letter from George Madis

Volcanic Lever Action Carbine with 16-inch barrel manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company c. 1859. The carbine has a blued barrel, silver-plated receiver and crescent buttplate and casehardened lever and hammer. The stock is oil finished, straight grain, American walnut. The top and sides of the receiver and edges of the buttplate are decorated with open scrollwork, simple floral designs and border work. The engraving is period and similar but not identical to the typical factory engraving on Volcanic firearms. The carbine is accompanied by a letter from Winchester expert George Madis. The Madis' letter states that all the carbine's major parts are original, all the internal assembly/serial numbers match and that the barrel blue and silver plating are original. Madis describes the engraving on the receiver and buttplate as "early style engraving" and notes that it is of slightly higher quality than is typically found on New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic firearms. The barrel is the early "Type I" style with full rib and nickel-silver cone front sight. The top flat is lightly stamped "PATENT NEW HAVEN. CONN." in a single line. The receiver has a dovetail mounted rear sight with elevation wheel. The hammer has fine knurling on the spur. The serial number "2307" is stamped on the right side of the loading lever and on the left side of the lower tang beneath the stock. The assembly number "14" is stamped on the right side of the lower tang and on the shank of all three of the hand-fitted tang screws. "H" is stamped on the left side of the tang ahead of the serial number and "X" is stamped on the left side of the lever. The stock is stamped "14" underneath the buttplate and "14" is stamped inside the buttplate heel. The top buttplate screw is brass and appears to be a period replacement.

Class: Antique

Very good. The blue finish on the barrel and integral magazine has an artificial dull blue on the exposed flats but retains traces of original blue in protected areas. The New Haven Arms Co., legend is light but legible. The replated silver-plated finish on the receiver and crescent buttplate is tarnished but remains at least 85% intact. The engraved scrollwork, floral decorations and borders on the receiver and buttplate are all professionally recut. Nearly all of the muted case colors are present on the hammer. The case colors on the lever have faded to a silver-gray patina on contact points. The replacement stock has several insignificant dents in the both sides of the wrist but remains in very good condition overall.

Well-Documented, Historic Incredibly Rare, and Desirable Ira Flanders Factory Inscribed 1 of 1,000 W

Lot # 11 (Sale Order: 11 of 942)

Well-Documented, Historic Incredibly Rare, and Desirable Ira Flanders Factory Inscribed 1 of 1,000 Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter, and Winchester Advertisement History Relating to Owner

There were actually only 133 Model 1873 1 of 1,000 rifles manufactured by Winchester, and according to "Winchester's New Model of 1873: A Tribute Vol. 2" by James Gordon only 63 were uncovered for their survey. This particularly rifle is noted on page 460 in their list of personal inscriptions by serial number and notes "I Flanders:" and "One of a Thousand." The personalized inscription is pictured on page 462. On page 382, the 1 of 1,000 marking is pictured, and the rifle is briefly discussed. It is also pictured and discussed in R. L. Wilson's "Winchester: The Golden Age of American Gunmaking and the Winchester 1 of 1000" on page 64. Based on the factory records surveyed by Gordon and Wilson, this rifle was the 9th 1 of 1,000 built and is one of only nine whose stock is not mentioned in the ledgers. All 1 of 1,000s were based on barrels selected as the best out of each thousand produced and received extra attention in fit and finishing. The factory letter confirms this rifle shipped on May 10, 1875, with the following features: rifle, 28 inch octagon barrel, set trigger, short magazine, "1 Of 1000," and "I Flanders." One other gun was with it in order number 3114. All of the features mentioned match the current configuration. It has "Ira Flanders" inscribed in script on the left side of the action, an unusually crude "1 of 1000" panel on the barrel at the breech (only example with this marking found), a half magazine, and a single set trigger. The dust cover is the correct early style with a checkered "thumb print" and is fitted to mortised guides in the top of the frame. The stock and forearm are smooth walnut, and the sights consist of standard German silver blade front and adjustable sporting rear sights on the barrel and a long range Vernier peep sight mounted on the upper tang. The included documents demonstrate that Ira Proctor Flanders (1831-1915) was a Civil War veteran from Plattsburgh, New York. He served in C Company of the 16th Regiment of New York Volunteer Infantry briefly between August and December 1862 before being discharged due to disability relating to health issues commonly caused by dysentery and other ailments prevalent in the Civil War camps. He is listed as a blacksmith on his death certificate and in Federal Census records for 1870. In "Forest and Stream" Volume 7 from 1876 on page 128 is a Winchester advertisement which includes a target shot off-hand at 400 yards by Flanders in Saranac, New York, near Plattsburgh in July of 1875 with 8 bullseyes and two shots in the second ring in. The target was almost certainly shot with this very rifle given the shipping date on the letter and the renowned accuracy of the 1 of 1,000 rifles. Included with the lot is an oval sepia-tone portrait of a young man in an early 20th century military uniform with "163" one the shoulders.

Class: Antique

Fair. The patinated metal surfaces have light pitting overall. The markings and name inscription are crisp, but the 1 of 1,000 mark is somewhat obscure. The revarnished wood is fair and has a hairline crack along the top left of the forearm, a crack in the front of the forearm, various scratches, and some small dents. The action and set trigger function very well. This is a unique opportunity to get your hands on a very well documented Winchester Model 1873 1 of 1,000 lever action rifle with unique inscription and unusual 1 of 1,000 marking.

Documented Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle with Factory Letter

Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1895. This rifle is accompanied by letters from the Winchester Arms Museum and the Cody Firearms Museum Records Office. The Winchester Museum letter describes it as: "rifle, 45/70 caliber, 1/2 octagon barrel, plain trigger, checkered stock, pistol grip, rubber butt plate, 1/2 magazine (4 Ctgs)" and "Lyman rear, leaf & (unreadable) front sights". The letter states this rifle was shipped from Winchester on July 25, 1895. The rifle has a blued barrel, half magazine, bolt, loading gate and trigger. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer and lever are color casehardened. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, fancy grain walnut with "Style H" checkering and a highly polished piano finish. The pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll-stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger and the serial number, "104230", is stamped in script numerals behind the tang screw.

Class: Antique

Very fine overall. Nearly 90% of the blue finish is present on the barrel, half-magazine, bolt, loading gate and trigger. 60% the case colors remain and have faded slightly on the forearm cap, contact points on the top and bottom of the receiver and on the bottom of the lever. The hammer, sides of the receiver and lever show strong case colors. The highly figured, fancy grade, walnut stock and forearm are in excellent condition with at least 90% of the high polish piano finish. The checkering on the forearm and stock is sharp and shows minimal handling wear. The stock and forearm have a few scattered, relatively minor, handling marks that do not detract from the overall excellent appearance of the fancy grade walnut. This is an attractive example of a special order Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Fancy Lever Action Rifle.

Attractive Panel Scene Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Carbine

Lot # 17 (Sale Order: 17 of 942)

Attractive Panel Scene Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Carbine

This Winchester Model 1866 carbine was manufactured in 1871 and subsequently was custom embellished in the mid-20th century. The carbine has the first style barrel band with integral front sight blade and two-leaf rear sight. A staple mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The stock has a crescent brass buttplate with hinged trapdoor. The stock and forearm are replacements of nicely figured American walnut. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the second type legend: "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16, 1860." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The serial number, "102168", is stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the trigger. The receiver and buttplate are gold plated and decorated with custom engraving. The engraving consists of a scene that covers most of the left side of the receiver and depicts a mounted hunter pursuing a small herd of bison. The right side plate depicts a hunter armed with a Winchester rifle about to be mauled by a grizzly bear and an oval that contains a bison head in profile. The balance of the receiver and buttplate heel are covered with open scrollwork on a punch-dot background, floral designs and detailed borders. The engraving style generally resembles Ulrich factory work.

Class: Antique

Very good as custom embellished. The barrel, magazine, barrel bands, hammer, lever, and trigger have the original blue and casehardened finish. The barrel and magazine have a brown patina with some minor scratches and traces of light pitting. The Winchester legend on the barrel is faint but legible. The barrel bands, lever, hammer, trigger and saddle ring have a silver-gray patina. The highly figured replacement stock and forearm have a few minor handling marks but generally show minimal wear. The gold plating on the receiver and buttplate is about 95% complete. The receiver plating has some minor wear on the edges and a small spot on discoloration in the upper left corner at the junction with the barrel. This is an attractive engraved Winchester Model 1866 carbine.

Engraved Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 18 (Sale Order: 18 of 942)

Engraved Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle

This is an example of a Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action rifle that was manufactured in 1888 and subsequently custom engraved and refurbished in the 20th century. The Cody Firearms Records Office serial number verification form indicates that this Model 1886 left the factory as a rifle with 45/90 caliber octagon barrel and plain trigger. The rifle was received in the warehouse on September 25, 1888 and shipped on October 2, 1888. The rifle has a 26-inch full octagon barrel with full length magazine, factory single set trigger and sling swivels on the forearm cap and stock. The barrel has a Lyman "Winchester Express" front sight and adjustable folding leaf rear sight marked "1886" at the top of the leaf. The top barrel flat has cross-checkered matting that covers the Winchester legend and obscures the caliber markings. The forearm and pistol grip stock are "XXXX" highly figured, fancy grain walnut with checkered forearm and pistol grip and a low-luster piano finish. The bottom of the pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The barrel, magazine, bolt, loading gate and trigger are blued and the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The receiver, bolt, hammer, lever, forearm cap and buttplate heel are engraved with flawlessly executed arabesque scrollwork and fancy borders. The engraving is similar in style and quality to Winchester factory work but lacks the game scenes found on most standard factory engraving. The left side of the lower tang is stamped with the assembly number "341" followed by "XXXX" and "SS". The assembly number "341" is also stamped in the upper tang inlet of the stock. A British "Crown/V" proof mark is stamped on the right side of the receiver and on the left side of the bolt. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped "-MODEL 1886-" surrounded by engraved borders. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are stamped behind the trigger on the lower tang. The serial number "23770" is engraved in script numerals on the lower tang and surrounded by scroll-work flourishes.

Class: Antique

Very good. The rifle has been expertly re-finished to nearly mint condition; the consignor notes state this rifle was refinished prior to 1975. The blue finish on the barrel, magazine, bolt and loading gate is almost indistinguishable from the Winchester commercial blue finish and is in nearly new condition. The case colors on the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate are vivid. The intricate and flawlessly executed engraving is crisp and deep. The crude recut checkering on the forearm has flattened diamonds with some wear on the underside while the pistol grip checkering has sharp diamonds. The stock and forearm have been expertly refinished to nearly new condition.

Antique Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with Casehardened Frame and Factory L

Lot # 19 (Sale Order: 19 of 942)

Antique Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with Casehardened Frame and Factory Letter

The included factory letter confirms the rifle was originally chambered for .40-82 and had a special order 30 inch long octagon barrel with sporting leaf sight (notch and folding ladder), and plain trigger and also indicates the rifle was received on April 4, 1889, and shipped the same day with three other Model 1886 rifles in order 20295. The current 30 inch barrel has a German silver blade front sight, notch and folding ladder rear sight, standard address and patent markings, and is stamped ".45-70 W.C.F." at the breech. The Winchester Model 1886 was the first lever action designed by John M. Browning, and the popular Model 1892 was based on the same design but scaled down for smaller cartridges. The Model 1886 was very popular and could handle everything from .33 W.C.F. to large .50 caliber express cartridges making it one of the best firearms for big game hunting in its day. They also saw limited military use even into WWI when they were used with incendiary ammunition against German airships by the British Royal Flying Corps.

Class: Antique

Very good as restored and rebarreled. 95% of the blue finish and vibrant case colors remain. There is some scratches on the barrel and magazine. The forend is very good and has only a few small dings and minor marks. The slightly undersized buttstock has a small crack on the upper right at the junction with the receiver, a chip on the left side in the same location, and some small chips. The action functions very well, and the markings are crisp.

Manufactured in 1904 with deluxe features on an engraved takedown receiver. The rifle is equipped with blade and adjustable sporting sights on the half-octagon, half-magazine, "SPECIAL SMOKELESS STEEL" barrel, with a mid-range adjustable peep sight on the tang of the "MARLIN SAFETY" receiver. Light scrollwork is present at the breech of the barrel, with deeper punch-dot backed designs on the takedown iron and frame, the latter also bearing a scene of a deer standing in the woods on the right side beneath the ejector port and a larger scene of a stag pursued into a clearing by a wolf on the left. Fitted with a fancy walnut pistol grip stock with checkering at the wrist and forearm, a checkered Marlin buttplate, and a silver shield on the right side of the buttstock inscribed "Edward Field Goltra".
