Lot # 1000 (Sale Order: 1 of 847)

Excellent Winchester Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine with Special Order 18 Inch Barrel

This is an excellent example of an Winchester Model 1873 saddle ring carbine in the favorite "44-40 WCF" caliber. This carbine was manufactured in 1886 and it features blued finish with the color case hardened hammer, buttplate and loading lever. This model of Winchester carbine has always been favorite of Winchester collectors especially in this high end condition in this caliber as they all truly saw heavy use on the western frontier. This example has the correct third model receiver with the integral machined dust cover rail on top of the receiver its original smooth sliding dust cover. It has the stepped down radius on the front edge of the receiver only found on short barrel 44-40 caliber carbines. The upper tang has the third pattern markings of: "WINCHESTER 1873" flanked by the decorative foliate on each end and it is correctly Winchester factory drilled and tapped for a tang sight. The receiver is fitted with an 18 inch carbine length barrel with the two line Winchester factory barrel markings on top with the "Kings Improvement Patented along with the 1860 patent dates. The breech end of the barrel is factory engraved, "44 CAL" and it has the fixed carbine front sight with the second pattern folding carbine rear sight that is graduated "2-9" (200-900 yards). The left side of the receiver has the factory installed staple and saddle ring. The underside of the brass cartridge lifter is correctly engraved "44 CAL. "The rear underside of the lower tang is engraved with the third pattern serial number style with serial number "199563A" centered in the middle of the tang. It is fitted with its original carbine style walnut stock and forend. The buttstock is fitted with the correct color case hardened buttplate with the sliding brass trap door, intended for the cleaning rod (which is not included with this carbine). The forend is held on by a single barrel band. No factory letter was made available to describer, but appears correct.

Class: Antique

Excellent with 95% plus of the original factory blued metal finish with blue loss on the barrel bands, hint of brown spotting on the right side of the receiver with thinning on the top left edge of the dust cover. The left rear side of the receiver shows some minor blue wear where the saddle ring rattled around on the side. The hammer and cocking lever retain 90% of their casehardened colors while the buttplate retains 70% plus mixed with some minor light spotting from storage. The forend and buttstock are both in excellent condition with a beautiful dark brown matching oil finish with the buttstock showing some very minor light nicks or scratches on the sides from general handling and storage. Very Fine Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. Lever Action Navy Pistol

Lot # 1005 (Sale Order: 6 of 847)

Very Fine Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. Lever Action Navy Pistol

This is a very fine example of a lever action Navy pistol with eight-inch barrel manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. in New Haven, Connecticut, circa 1856. The pistol has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral ten-shot magazine and swiveling magazine collar. The barrel has a nickel silver cone front sight. The brass (gunmetal) frame has a dovetail mounted fixed rear sight with simple notch. The ejection port on the top of the frame has a square cut on the front and semi-circular cutout on the rear. The loading lever has a round finger hole, and the hammer has coarse knurling on the spur. The two-piece walnut grips have a high polish piano finish. The barrel has a blue finish, and the hammer and lever are color casehardened. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN. FEB 14. 1854" in four lines. The serial number "2532" is stamped: (1) on the right side of the back strap beneath the grip, (2) on the right side of the loading lever, and (3) on the inside of both walnut grips. All of the visible serial numbers match. The barrel markings indicate that this pistol was manufactured after the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. was organized in April 1856, but before Oliver Winchester acquired control of the company in April 1857 and reorganized it as the New Haven Arms Co. Total production of Navy pistols with 8 inch barrels by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. is estimated to be approximately 1,500 pistols. The lever action pistols and carbines manufactured by Smith & Wesson, Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., and New Haven Arms Co. are historically important firearms. Volcanic firearms were the first repeating pistols and carbines to utilize a self-contained primed cartridge, spring loaded magazine, and repeating lever action mechanism. Although Volcanic firearms were not commercially successful, development of the basic design and introduction of improved cartridges paved the way for the successful Henry rifle and Winchester Model 1866 and 1873 rifles. In addition, shirt maker Oliver Winchester's investment in the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. introduced him to firearms manufacturing and ultimately led to his establishment of the Winchester Repeating Arms Co.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The pistol retains 75%-80% plus of the original blue finish overall. Most of the blue finish is present on the barrel and integral magazine. There are several shallow marks on the top of the magazine collar behind the front sight and along the barrel edges. Contact points on the barrel and magazine have developed a nice plum brown patina. The barrel legend is crisp. The case colors on the hammer and finger lever have aged to a mottled plum brown patina. The frame has a mellow attractive patina. There are some shallow handling marks lightly visible in the edges of the side plates along the top of the frame and a few scattered dents on the left side plate surrounding the finger lever screw. The piano finished walnut grips remain in excellent condition and have 95% plus of the original high polish varnish finish. Wear is limited to shallow handling and storage marks with some edge wear along the bottom of the grip. This is an exceptional original example of a Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. Navy pistol with eight inch barrel.

Winchester - 1892

Lot # 1009 (Sale Order: 10 of 847)

Outstanding Documented Antique Winchester Model 1892 Deluxe Lever Action Rifle with Rare Original Winchester Crate

This Winchester Deluxe Model 1892 Fancy Lever Action Rifle was manufactured in 1896 an subsequently returned to Winchester by the owner, for some attentive "detailing". The rifle includes a copy of a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes the rifle features as "25/20 caliber" with octagon barrel, plain trigger, checkered stock with pistol grip and shotgun butt. The letter states that this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on June 8, 1896, and was returned for repair on April 22, 1912. The rifle has a full blue finish with deluxe, highly figured, fancy grain walnut forearm and pistol grip stock. The stock and forearm have Winchester "Style H" checkering and a high polish piano finish. The pistol grip has a black hard rubber grip cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS". The barrel has a Lyman Winchester Express front sight with white bead and a sporting style rear sight with sliding insert. The left side of the barrel is die-stamped "-MODEL 1892-WINCHESTER-25-20W.C.F.-/-TRADE MARK-" in two lines below the rear sight. The right side of the barrel is die-stamped "MADE IN U.S.A.WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./-NEW HAVEN CONN.-" below the rear sight. Oval Winchester "W/P" proofmarks are stamped on the top of the barrel and receiver. The upper receiver tang is stamped with the first style marking "MODEL 1892/-WINCHESTER-/PAT. OCT. 14 1884". The serial number "56827" is stamped in large numerals across the bottom of the receiver. The rifle is complete with the original wooden crate that was apparently used to ship it from Winchester in 1912. The upper left corner of the crate is stenciled "FROM/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS/NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A." "C.O.D." is boldly stenciled in black ink near the center of the crate and an illegible "NY" shipping address is written in grease pencil near the muzzle end of the crate. The remains of an old shipping label are visible near the center of the crate. The crate lid is fastened with brass hinges. The interior contains two wooden blocks and two pieces of scrap cloth padding. Winchester shipping containers from the pre-WWI period are almost non-existent. This is only the second Winchester rifle from this period with an original factory crate ever offered for sale by Rock Island Auction Company.

Class: Antique

Extremely fine as factory refurbished. The rifle retains 99% of the bright original factory blue finish and shows only very light handling and storage wear. The blue finish on the serrated steel buttplate has faded to a brown patina, and the finish on the upper tang and lower receiver has thinned slightly from handling. The exceptional deluxe grain walnut stock and forearm have nearly all of the high polish piano finish, and the checkering is sharp. Wear is limited to a few minor storage marks. The crate shows the wear expected of a 101-year old wooden box, but the Winchester return address remains legible. This is an outstanding example of a Winchester Model 1892 Deluxe Sporting Rifle with the original Winchester shipping crate. This is possibly one-of-a-kind example of an extremely rare deluxe Winchester Model 1892 Rifle.

Winchester - 1885-Musket

Lot # 1017 (Sale Order: 18 of 847)

Extraordinary Documented Winchester Model 1885 Low Wall Takedown Musket, One of Five Known, with Factory Letter

This is absolutely a stunning, near brand new, and extremely rare "British Special Order" Winchester Model 1885 low wall, three band Musket with the rare "takedown" feature; one of the rarest features ever found on low wall rifles. This rifle is one of five known factory documented low musket ever manufactured by Winchester. These muskets are pictured on page 155 of the book "The Winchester Single-Shot Rifle" by Campbell. Although the lower picture does not list the serial number of the rifle, it could in fact be this same rifle! These rifles were supposedly manufactured by Winchester under a special order contract basis for evaluation by the British Government in the WWI era; likely intending them to be used by the British Home Guard, probably for training purposes, just as the US Government was doing with the early Winder Muskets, they had purchased from Winchester. This beautiful rifle is in absolutely near new condition and is fully documented as to its configuration by the accompanying factory letter dated June 1987. This letter verifies that musket configuration, takedown feature, 22 short caliber, 30 inch No. 1 barrel, and a 44-A rear sight. The rifle was received in the warehouse on January 17, 1918, and shipped from the warehouse on January 22, 1918. The letter also states "the Winchester Archives indicates that only five arms of this type were made." The #1 barrel is marked on the left side with the two line Winchester address/patent dates, same as the U.S. contract Winder Muskets and with the caliber designation in front of the receiver. Very interestingly it is also marked under the rear sight with "-----NICKEL STEEL BARREL-----/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER". This is a very unusual factory stamping as these markings were usually reserved for centerfire cartridges only, when Winchester was transitioning from black powder to smokeless powder and was not usually seen on 22 rimfire rifles. It has the standard straight grip walnut stock with the very rare, full length 25 1/2 inch "Musket Forend", that has two barrel bands and a very rare nose-cap that also functions as a barrel band, making this a three-band musket. It is fitted with a set of factory sling swivels mounted on the underside of the buttstock and middle band. It has the standard Winchester circled "WP" proofmarks on the barrel and upper tang markings with the serial number (107633 A) stamped on the rear of the lower tang. It has blued finish with casehardened breechblock and lever.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent plus with 99% original bright Winchester factory blued finish with some very minor handling marks. The breechblock and lever also retain 99% of their deep, dark blued case colors just starting to show some fading. The wood is crisp with only a couple of minor handling marks. The markings are crisp and sharp. The action is excellent with storage grease still around the breech end of the barrel (see photos). It has a mint, bright bore. As noted in the referenced book, two of these rifles were released by the factory years ago when they disposed of some of their collection, and this is one of those rifles sold off. It is rare "One of Five" known three band, Low Wall muskets ever manufactured!

Winchester - 1886

Lot # 1018 (Sale Order: 19 of 847)

Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle in 50 Express Caliber with Casehardened Receiver and P. Orr & Sons Madras Retailer Marking

Manufactured in 1891, this Model 1886 is chambered in the very desirable 50 Express caliber and made for the Indian market. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address ahead of the rear sight and marked "MADE FOR./P. ORR & SONS, MADRAS." at the breech. P. Orrs & Sons is an old store that primarily made clocks in Chennai, India. It was started by Peter Orr in 1846 on the foundation of the nascent George Gordon & Co. The first showroom was opened at Anna Salia in 1879 and was inaugurated by Price George, Duke of York who later became King George V, and Princess Mary of Teck, who later became Queen Mary. The establishment was sold to Karumuthu Thiagarajar Chettiar in 1967. In 1749, the British regained control of Fort St. George and Madras, and in the latter half of the 18th century, it became an important British naval base and the administrative center of the growing British dominions in Southern India. The development of the harbor in Madras led the city to become an important center for trade between India and Europe in the 18th century. Today Madras, now known as Chennai, is a large commercial and industry center and is the automobile capital of India. Located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, the 400 year old city is the 31st largest metropolitan area in the world. In addition to the retailer marking at the breech, the top of the barrel is also marked "50 EX" and there are various British proofmarks on the left side at the breech. The upper front left of the receiver is marked with a "crown/V" proof. The upper tang is marked "-MODEL 1886-" and the two patent dates are marked on the lower tang directly behind the trigger and the serial number on the end. The barrel is fitted with a dovetailed silver beaded blade front sight and a three leaf Winchester express rear sight. Button magazine, blue barrel and desirable early casehardened receiver. The hammer, lever and buttplate are also casehardened. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with a steel forend cap and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.

Class: Antique

Fine. The barrel has traces of blue with the balance a smooth mottled brown patina. The receiver retains 30% of the vivid original case colors with a smooth mottled gray patina on the balance. The forend cap retains most of the original age darkened casehardened pattern. The hammer and lever have a smooth dark patina, and the buttplate has a smooth mottled gray patina. The wood is also very good with some moderate wear on the toe area of the stock. There's a moderately small dent on the left wrist and overall some minor dents, dings and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is fine. A nice Winchester Model 1886 in the very desirable 50 express caliber and casehardened receiver made for an Indian retailer of the British Empire.

Exceptional New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 1020 (Sale Order: 21 of 847)

Exceptional New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle

Henry lever action rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. in June 1865. The rifle has the distinctive brass receiver and crescent buttplate with octagon barrel and integral 15-shot magazine. The stock is oil-finished, straight grain American walnut. The barrel has a mid-late production, nickel-silver, square back front sight with tapered profile blade and the final style folding leaf rear sight. The rear sight has a 900 yard notch on the top of the blade, elevator bar stop screw and elevator bar with rounded ends. The stock has the second style buttplate with pointed heel. The buttplate has a hinged brass trapdoor, and the butt trap contains the four-piece, jointed steel ramrod with brass tip furnished with later production Henry rifles. The left side of the stock and the barrel have a factory sling swivel and screw-fastened loop for a sling hook that were standard on later production Henry rifles. The magazine has the late, large diameter follower, and the receiver has the late milled follower cut. The buttplate and tang screws are the cap head style used on mid-late production rifles rather than the hand-fitted and serial numbered screws used on early production rifles. The barrel and magazine are blued, the hammer, lever and trigger have a color casehardened finish, and the receiver and crescent buttplate have the natural brass finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the second style legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN.CT." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. This late marking is slightly larger than the first style marking (3 9/32" vs 2 17/32") and uses all serif letters rather than the combination of serif and block letters found in the first style legend. The serial number "9899" is stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver and on the inside of the buttplate (the stock was not removed to view the serial number on the tang and stock). The tang and buttplate screws are, correctly, not serial numbered. The "W" inspection mark used by Oliver Winchester is stamped on the lower receiver tang between the lever latch and stock screw.

Class: Antique

Excellent. The rifle retains 85% plus of the original blue finish on the barrel/magazine. The barrel has light finish wear on the edges and the blue has faded to a plum patina on the contact points along the bottom of the rear 1/3 of the magazine. The New Haven Arms Co. address and serial number are crisp. Most of the fire blue finish is present on the rear sight elevation bar. The brass receiver and buttplate are in excellent condition with a very attractive, untouched patina. The receiver side plate joints are perfect. The upper receiver tang has been drilled and tapped for a tang sight, and the hole contains a Allen-head screw. The case colors on the hammer, trigger and lever are about 80% complete and have faded to a mottled brown patina. Traces of the original fire blue finish are present on the tang and buttplate screws. The stock is also in excellent condition, retains nearly all of the original oil finish and shows only a few scattered and very minor handling and storage marks. Henry rifles typically saw hard use and are rarely found with any original finish. This is an outstanding example of an 1865 production Henry rifle in excellent condition that would be very hard to improve upon.
