Very Rare Browning Auto-5 Pre-War Grade IV Shotgun Belonging To General Motors Vice President Harley

Lot # 11 (Sale Order: 11 of 1138)

serial #40045, 16 ga. (2 9/16"), 27 1/2" matted sighting plane barrel choked full with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces retain 99% plus original Browning factory blue. The receiver is extensively inlaid in both yellow and green gold in the lovely pre-war grade IV pattern with an additional spray of gold scroll on the barrel just ahead of the receiver. The bright-polished bolt and carrier remain brilliant with only very light wear marks and the trigger and safety retain some very good straw color, the screws and smaller parts have drifted primarily to a pleasing silvery pewter. The checkered round knob pistolgrip English walnut buttstock and forend rate about excellent, the butt showing a few very light handling marks or dings from the years, the forend with the obligatory 1 1/2" crack on its underside, it could easily be rectified by a talented wood man and made to go away if one wished. Close inspection of the buttstock reveals an additional very tiny crack along its left leading edge at the pistolgrip just between the lower tang and the checkering pattern, roughly about 1/4"; it is tight and will not flex. The length of pull to the original factory-installed Hawkins recoil pad is 13 3/4". The shotgun rides in a very nice leather-covered luggage-style carry case with brass reinforced edges. General Motors vice president and head automotive designer Harley J. Earl's name is embossed on the cover in gold "Harley J Earl/General Motors Corporation/Detroit Michigan/Browning 16". The case itself rates very good plus to near excellent showing minor dings and scuffs and handling marks from the years, the interior is a brown baize with compartments for the gun, dismounted barrel, three-piece wooden cleaning rod and a circular recess for cleaning patches. General Motors vice president and chief designer Harley J. Earl is largely credited as the "father of modern automobile design".... the man who took running boards off and put tailfins on. He is the father of the Corvette and his design and styling acumen will not be repeated in automotive circles, likely ever. The winner of the Daytona 500 is, to this day, presented with the Harley J. Earl trophy. Really a very super and very rare shotgun overall, all-the-more-desirable with its connection to this famous and very ingenious automotive designer. (37679-1) {C&R}(4000/6000)...more

Exceptional Colt 1877 Thunderer Double Action Revolver Engraved By Alvin White

Lot # 24 (Sale Order: 24 of 1138)

serial #64190, 41 Colt, custom-shortened 1 1/2" barrel a bright about excellent bore. This lovely revolver is engraved in near full coverage with loose flowing open scroll with background punch-dot shading, the flutes, frontstrap and front of triggerguard the only portions which are not engraved. The barrel, cylinder, backstrap and triggerguard retain nearly all their original engraver-applied blue finish with just some very light high edge wear on the sharp edges of the cylinder flutes, some knuckle wear on the backstrap and a bit on the frontstrap. The frame retains nearly all its nice, slightly muting mottled gray color case-hardening. Both hammer and trigger are nicely blued as well and all the screws exhibit bright blue as well. The checkered hard rubber Rampant Colt grips appear original to the gun and rate very good plus showing wear along their sharp high edges; both are pencil numbered "190". The included factory letter shows shipment in March 1888 to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. in Chicago as a 3 1/2" nickel 38 Colt. Indeed, the cylinder is numbered to a different gun, clearly mated by Mr. White when these revolvers were commissioned as a pair. The frame is stamped beneath the grips "AW" in three spots and the gun seems to time well and lock up properly. Really a wonderfully executed very stunning little hideout Thunderer, a lovely accompaniment to the following revolver. (37679-13) {ANTIQUE} (2500/4000)...more

Beautiful Colt Model 1877 Thunderer Double Action Revolver Engraved By Alvin White

Lot # 25 (Sale Order: 25 of 1138)

serial #33495, 41 Colt, custom-shortened 1 1/2" barrel with a very good bore which shows sharp rifling but with scattered very light pitting. The metal surfaces on this fine little "belly-gun" are engraved in near overall coverage with loose flowing open scroll with background punch-dot accenting. The cylinder flutes, frontstrap and front portion of the guard are the only areas which remain un-engraved. The revolver retains about 99% engraver-applied nickel, the only real area of loss or flaking is on the high edge of the half-moon front sight. The trigger, base pin and screws are all nicely blued, a couple screws showing only light blue loss. The revolver is fitted with a pair of antique ivory grips which are also over all carved with loose flowing scroll, with images of Rampant Colts on both left and right grips; there are nice age cracks running through each of the grips as well, attesting to their age. The included factory letter shows shipment in December 1881 to Hartley & Graham in New York as a 3 1/2 inch blued 41 Colt. The cylinder is assembly-numbered to the gun and the arm seems to time well and lock up appropriately. The grip frame is stamped in two spots "AW" and one grip as "AAW" scratched beneath it. Really a very attractive and very well-executed mate to the previous arm, they would look very attractive cased together. (37679-12) {ANTIQUE}(2500/4000)...more
