Indo-Persian Parade Shield, circa 1880-1910, approx. 19'' across and 4'' deep, decorated with four bosses held by hooped screws, and acid etched scenes from the Moghul period including tiger hunting scenes, all surrounded by two floral motif on the rim. Pr. Continental Turkish/Ottoman Saddle Pistols

Lot # 552 (Sale Order: 2 of 556)      

Pair of Continental Turkish/Ottoman Single Shot Saddle Holster Pistols, approx. .60 smoothbore, 7-5/16'' barrels, brown finish, reeded European hardwood stocks, with Turkish half moon and star motif on top barrel flats. Possibly Belgian for the Ottoman market. Condition is fair. All steel surfaces have turned a uniform brown with light surface corrosion overall. Pistols are overall decorated with a floral/scroll engraving pattern. Barrels are slightly swamped octagon, possibly Damascus steel, with two script and one cross key proof. The Flobert style reeded stocks are intact with slight losses to the muzzle ends. Brass furniture is floral scroll engraved with shell motif traps in butts. Both are contained in a purple embroidery covered leather holster with shoulder strap. Holster shows its age with general fading and loss to the cloth and stitching. The leather, while still supple, shows several losses around the edges. Pistols are fitted with an unknown type of bone ramrod. Est.: $800-$1,200. (Antique)...more

17th Century Nuremberg Style Wheellock Rifle

Lot # 553 (Sale Order: 3 of 556)      

17th Century Nuremberg Style Wheellock Rifle, approx. .50 cal., 37-1/2'' half-round half-octagon barrel with turned collar at junction, bright finish, full length European stock, with no markings. Rear sight is steel dovetailed into the barrel; front sight is brass dovetailed near the muzzle. Condition is fine as extensively cleaned. This rifle is void of markings or adornment which may be a result of the cleaning to bright. Stock appears to be made in two pieces, extensively incised, with a floral motif and stags grazing on the cheekpiece. Patch box appears to be original to the rifle and is inlaid with bone, as is the muzzle. Cleaning rod is missing as are the attaching thimbles. Rear triggerguard mounting screw has been replaced with a nail. Double set trigger plate has been secured with a replacement screw. English Pepperbox, by unknown Birmingham maker, .36 cal., 3.5'' barrel, case hardened finish, smooth walnut grips, with Birmingham proofs on each barrel. Condition is fine with approx. 40% case color remaining to all metal parts, with light surface oxidation overall, heavier on the grip straps. Pistol is lightly scroll engraved on the frame, triggerguard and backstrap; barrels are lightly engraved near the muzzles. Belgian Percussion Target Pistol, NVSN, brass sleeved .44'' bore with 3-groove rifling, reduced from an original .58'' smoothbore, browned 6-1/2'' octagonal twist barrel with small notch rear sight and square front blade, upper left barrel flat is marked ''58'' and ''44'' above a single Liege proofmark. Lockplate and furniture are lightly engraved with leaf patterns and hammer has a half-cock notch; checkered stock has a gloss varnished finish with metal grip cap and tapered wood ramrod with a brass ferrule; weight is 27 ozs. In modern oak case lined with blue velour. Condition is fair to good with a strong mainspring and clean bore. Metal surfaces have a dark grey patina with fine oxidation and pitting. Barrel has a few chafes and the hammer has areas of buffed corrosion. Stock has small dents and chips with raised grain and a beginning split under the forend. Front sight is an inset replacement. 18th Century English Flintlock Coaching Gun, by James Barbar of London, approx. 12 bore, 19'' barrel with swamped muzzle, brown finish, smooth carved walnut stock, with London view and black powder proofs. Front sight is a groove cut in the muzzle, with no rear sight. Lock is marked ''Barbar''. Condition is very good. Overall finish is an even brown with pitting near the lock. The nicely carved stock is generally sound with some loss to the right and left side of the barrel channel near the muzzle, small losses at the front and rear of the lock, a crack on the left side of the triggerguard, and a slight crack behind the barrel tang. Forward barrel attaching pin is missing. All of the lightly cleaned brass furniture is in excellent condition with minor dents and scratches. Triggerguard has a nicely executed bell-shaped finial; a large brass escutcheon plate is inlet at the wrist. Sideplate is a simple but elegant brass filigree. Est.: $800-$1,200 (Antique)...more

D.P. Slingsby English Bar Action Perc. Rifle

Lot # 558 (Sale Order: 8 of 556)      

D. P. Slingsby, Leeds, Provincial English Bar Action Percussion Rifle, NSNV, .54'' cal, 29-1/2'' browned twist steel octagonal barrel having 12 groove rifling, with maker's name engraved on top barrel flat, accompanied by early Birmingham proofs on lower barrel flat. Lock is case colored with scroll engraved vignettes and triangular cut borders which follow to the blued breech plug and combination glove-fitting triggerguard and knurled hand stop; hammer has a half-cock notch and is similarly engraved. The windage adjustable two-leaf rear sight assembly has one standing and one folding sight, with a small blade front sight. Barrel pipes house a brass-tipped rosewood ramrod with a copper handle. The figured walnut halfstock has a gloss varnish and is cut with coarse diamond checkering, bordered by three lines on the wrist, with a heavy steel buttplate, silver nosecap and ramrod guide, and a small vacant silver shield on top of wrist. Rifle is housed in a key lock mahogany campaign-style case with brass furniture and green felt lining, along with accoutrements including an ornate DIXON & SONS hallmarked copper flask with an adjustable charger and a sealed tin of Joyce percussion caps. Overall condition is very good, having indications of occasional use and retaining a strong mainspring. Barrel brown has drifted to mottled gray-black with overall fine pitting, the hook has light corrosion. The visible bore lands have patchy copper-colored fouling; lock case colors have toned bronze with faint traces of original color. Barrel dovetails and sights have small nicks and scratches from adjustments; buttplate has been polished over old corrosion and pitting. Stock has minor shrinkage and an uneven re-varnish over old dents and scratches with scattered pry marks around the lock inletting. Case has scuffs and scratches with a few shrinkage cracks and is missing the lock escutcheon and key; case lining and partitions have been periodically redone. Est.: $1,800-$2,800. (Antique)...more

Fine Presentation Quality British 1836 Pattern Brunswick Percussion Rifle, NSNV, .654'' cal., 29-1/2'' browned twist steel octagonal barrel with maker's name ''I. EGAN. ARMORER, 2ND. RIFLES.'' engraved on top barrel flat with early Birmingham proofs on lower barrel flat; polished in-the-white back action lock has light vine scroll engraving with ''I. EGAN'' on narrow portion of lockplate, followed by a small British broad arrow; hammer has a half-cock notch and trigger is pin adjustable within an oversized glove-fitting triggerguard. The windage adjustable two-leaf rear sight assembly has one standing and one folding sight, both with platinum center lines and traditionally regulated for 200 and 300 yards, with a small ribbed blade front sight. Breech plug is case colored and is inlaid with platinum bands; barrel has a browned retainer and pipes accommodating a brass-tipped rosewood ramrod with an ebony handle. The light toned walnut halfstock has an old urethane re-varnish with flat diamond checkering, heavy steel buttplate, and single compartment patchbox with an engraved lion herald on the polished cover; top tang has a vacant silver oval. Rifle is accompanied by a large assortment of period parts and accessories including a quantity of 385 grain belted lead balls in a felt bag, ''EXTRA QUALITY'' black leather covered W. Bartram flask with adjustable charger, tin of Sheffield XL percussion caps, partitioned black leather ammunition pouch, ball starters, an assortment of brass cleaning jags and wire brushes in a felt bag, two leather slings, and a wood jar holding a loose sling swivel; patchbox compartment contains a small bag of patches. The rifle and accoutrements are housed in a fitted purple baize lined varnished mahogany campaign-style case with sliding brass catches and key lock. Condition appears nearly untouched as stored for many years with the mainspring remaining strong. Hammer, lockplate and patchbox finish have lightened to a mottled silver-gray patina; lockplate has a few light pry marks on the top edge with an associated wood fill in stock. Exposed barrel brown has areas of blackened oxidation; visible portion of bore has light corrosion and oxidation. Stock has scattered dings and scratches with a few small repairs. Case has overall scuffs and scratches with a shrinkage crack end-to-end through the center brass handle; no key is present. All metal parts have an even grey/brown patina. Barrels have small dents that do not show in the bore. Locks function as designed; right side frizzen is broken off. Cocks are complete, left screw is replaced. Stock is fair with a beautifully rendered boar's head carving on the underside of the butt; checkering on forearm and wrist is worn smooth. Toe of butt is chipped with some loss. Middle ramrod thimble is fitted with a sling stud; rear stud is missing and replaced with a screw. Unique Side-by-Side Underlever Hammer Shotgun by Ludwig Koppensteiner, Linz, Austria, #1680, 14 ga., 2-9/16'' chs., 29-1/2'' browned laminated steel barrels with 3/8'' concave rib, brass front bead, gold barrel breech bands and Belgian proofmarks ca. 1890. Frame is case colored and has full coverage fine Austrian leaf and floral scroll engraving around small game scene vignettes of deer and hunting dogs; back-action locks have unusual non-rebounding hammers with long hinged strikers attached with screws; double triggers have an ornamental steel triggerguard with a long curved horn extension. Checkered dense walnut stock has contrasting flame figure grain with a large saddle cheekpiece and heavy gloss varnish. Length of pull is 13'' to a contoured steel buttplate, weight is 6-3/4 lbs., sling swivels are 3/4''. Overall condition is good to very good showing only minor indications of actual use; the action is tight and the mainsprings are strong; the bores have bright areas mixed with darkening and pitting. Case colors have drifted to dark gray and the triggerguard is oxidized. Action interior and barrels have light oxidation spots and small scratches with losses in the gold bands. Stock is generally dented and scratched under layers of revarnish and has a few sections of worn checkering, with a small fracture behind the right lockplate and on the wrist. Est.: $900-$1,200. Early American Fixed Blade Knife, by Clarenbach & Herder, Phila., 8'' clip-point blade, 12-1/2'' overall, marked on ricasso ''CLARENBACH / & / HERDER, PHILADA''; nickel silver guard, checkered wood grips held in place by brass pins. Includes what appears to be a period brown leather sheath with grooved decoration to front side of body. We estimate this knife to be mfg'd mid-19th Century. Condition is very good overall. Blade shows signs of possible light cleaning, as well as dark spotting and a small amount of very fine pinprick imperfections to the surface. Nickel silver guard with moderate toning, trace amounts of verdigris are present, and fine pitting and impressions, in addition to two larger indentations to the left side. Grips with normal signs of age, use, and nice checkering. Tang with an overall dark patina. Body of sheath with an approx. 1-1/2'' long tear to both upper corners. In general, the knife and sheath show signs of age and use that you would expect from a knife of this time period. This maker is not often encountered. Est.: $1,000-$2,000....more

U.S. Model 1850 Presentation Infantry Officer's Sword, by Ames, inscribed on scabbard throat, ''Presented to Col. H.A. Smalley, 5th Vt. (Vermont) Vols., by the officers of his staff''; and on reverse ''Ames Mfg. Co. / Chicopee / Mass.'' Col. Smalley was educated at West Point and was formerly an officer in the Second United States Artillery. In April 1862 the New York Times printed a tribute to Smalley from the Vermont Volunteers acknowledging this presentation. Col. Smalley expressed his gratitude and his desire to defer the date of presentation until such time as ''I shall have proved on the field of battle.that I deserve it.'' The 5th was active in both Fredericksburg Campaigns and Gettysburg, and participated with the Army of the Potomac from the Wilderness to Cold Harbor, afterward taking part in the siege of Petersburg. Condition overall is very good. The 31'' bright gray blade shows clear patriotic etchings. Wire wrapped shagreen grip with wire wrap is intact with no losses, and the pierced guard shows a floral and vine motif. Kentucky Style Percussion Single Shot Long Rifle, maker unknown, NSNV, .40 cal., approx. 42'' barrel, brown finish, full-length smooth walnut stock, with brass blade front sight and dovetailed ''V''-notch rear sight. Lock marked ''R.B.'' in a scroll. Condition is fair. Octagon barrel is pitted overall heavily near lock. Double set trigger lock does not function; powder drum and nipple are heavily pitted. Stock finish is turning dark brown. Stock is very good with no breaks or losses but some shrinkage. Stock is fitted with brass furniture that is an even dark patina with minor dents. Brass patchbox is simply engraved in a scroll pattern; patchbox is opened by a button in the toeplate. Action does not function, bore is dark. Est.: $750-$950. (Antique)...more

Finely Crafted New York Over/Under Percussion Combination Gun, by W. & C. Ogden, NVSN, 28'' blued octagonal barrels with a .42'' cal. sleeved rifle barrel over a 16 ga. smooth bore barrel; top barrel flat is marked ''W. & C. OGDEN/OWEGO.N.Y/CAST-STEEL''. The gun features case colored back-action locks of best-quality construction, appearing to be made and finished by one of the Birmingham lock makers of the time, circa 1860's, with vine scroll and border engraving on the plates and dolphin motifs on the hammers; triggers are double set with a small adjustable set screw; the long extended silver triggerguard and hand stop have leaf scroll engraving with simple punch dot backgrounds and are matching in style to the crescent buttplate, patchbox and decorative star inlay on the saddle cheekpiece, which also feature small cameos of various game birds; furniture mounting screws are blued with lightly engraved heads. The unique rear sight arrangement includes a small sporting ''V''-notch leaf mounted in dovetail, along with a simple unmarked long-range combination ''V''-notch leaf with fine aperture, also mounted in barrel dovetail, with screw adjustable elevator block resting on upper tang; large front sight is a windage adjustable silver blade; rib mounted pipes on each side of barrels hold a brass handled wood ramrod and combination brass handled wood stuck ball remover and cleaning rod. The red-toned walnut stock has dark grain figure along the comb and is finished with a medium-gloss varnish with broad flat diamond checkering on the wrist; gun weighs 11-3/4 lbs. Overall condition is fine with strong mainsprings; double trigger system needs maintenance to improve the functioning. Lock case colors have drifted to dark gray and barrels have a patchy grey patina with a thin even layer of oxidation and light pitting that is somewhat heavier closer to the breeches and has been buffed. Bores have thin brown oxidation; right rear pipe bracket has a fine lengthwise crack; silver furniture has been lightly cleaned in exposed areas, leaving tarnish under the triggerguard and in patchbox, which has a few patches inside under a layer of verdigris.
