12 GAUGE LONG RANGE SHOT CARTRIDGE CASES.

Lot # 803 (Sale Order: 4 of 667)

Also called shot concentrators, these interesting devices were patented and sold beginning in the mid-1870s by H.H. Schleber of Rochester, NY. They were designed to hold a shot pattern out to one of three distances: 50, 70, or 90 yards, this box being full of the 70 yard variety. Other than a split at the left end of the bottom, typical of these taped construction boxes, both box and label are exceptional as are the shot cases themselves. <br/ [An interesting 1884 ad by the company displaying these cases is displayed on the International Ammunition Assoc website and may be searched using the following link: http://iaaforum.org/forum3/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=13721]<br/

Lot of 3: Original German MP-40 Magazines.

Lot # 818 (Sale Order: 19 of 667)

The German MP-40 was a 32 shot fully automatic sub-machine gun for the German army from 1940 to 1945; often referred to as the “Burp” gun, it has a cycle rate of 400-550 rounds per minute. It was a high quality weapon that was used throughout the war. All three original magazines are full Nazi marked as follows: Magazine (A) stamped ayf43 with Waffenamt 280; Magazine (B) is stamped bte42 with Waffenamt 1aAB37; and Magazine (C) ayf42 with Waffenamt 280. These original magazines are extremely difficult to find and retain the majority of their original blue finish with sharp markings.

.38 MERWIN & HULBERT Picture Box Ammo.

Lot # 820 (Sale Order: 21 of 667)

This box and labeling has not, to our knowledge, been found with cartridges or even a side label. It is typically found with inked notations on one end stating that it contains some small parts used in the Winchester factory. This box doesn’t have that feature though it could have been skillfully removed. Still, there are so few boxes designated for Merwin & Hulbert, and far fewer “picture” boxes, that this colorful box, even empty, is extremely popular among collectors.

.40-60 WCF Ammo (Win Mod 1876).

Lot # 822 (Sale Order: 23 of 667)

This box, the first by UMC, circa 1884, showing un-headstamped cartridge picture on front label. By the end of 1885, however, UMC had begun headstamping these rounds with the short-lived and desirable Raised Headstamp (“UMC SH 40-60”) as contained in this offering. Coming out as it did only months before Winchester’s much improved Model 1886 lever rifle as well as the single shot Model 1885 (High Wall & Low Wall) rifles, both with their several new caliber introductions, the 40-60 was never a big seller. While the labels show some age, the box remains tight at all seams and edges, unusual for these early taped-construction boxes.
