French All-Bisque Mignonette with Rare Smiling Expression 1100/1500

5" (13 cm.) Solid domed bisque swivel head on slender bisque torso, brilliant blue glass enamel inset eyes, painted lashes, single stroke brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with upturned lip corners as though smiling, outlined lips, white space suggesting teeth between the lips, blonde mohair wig, peg-jointed bisque arms and legs, bare feet. Condition: generally excellent, tiniest flakes at arm jointing holes. Comments: for the French market, circa 1880, the little dolls were presented in the Parisian Etrennes catalogs at that time as "poupees de poche" (pocket dolls) in reference to their miniature pocket-size stature. Value Points: very beautiful painting on all-original doll with rare smiling expression, wearing original aqua silk costume....more

Bisque swivel head on bisque torso, cobalt blue glass enamel inset eyes, fringe-painted lashes, single stroke brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with center accent line, brunette mohair wig, peg-jointing at shoulders and hips, ball-jointing at elbows, bare feet. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, the jointed elbow mignonette was deposed by Fernand Sustrac in 1877, and mentioned in La Poupee Modele of 1878, named "poupees de poche" (pocket dolls). Value Points: charming piquant expression on the heart-shaped face wearing original costume and hat, the mignonette has rare ball-jointing at wrists....more

Solid dome paper mache shoulder head with applied hair over painted pate, ivory-like complexion, painted large teal-blue eyes, black upper eyeliner, arched brows, curve-shaped nose, closed mouth with hint of smile, firmly-stuffed pink kid body with shapely waist, one-piece arms with mitten hands, one-piece shapely legs. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1840. Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulderplate, cobalt blue glass enamel inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes and delicately-feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with accented lips, ears pierced into head, kid poupee body with gusset-jointing at elbows, hips and knees. Condition: generally excellent, repair to wrist. Comments: French, circa 1865, included is an extensive trousseau of gowns and dresses, made exclusively for the doll along with an array of bonnets, parasol, jewelry, undergarments, and various accessories such as a wonderful pair of early ice skates, in original trunk with name plate of Mlle Alice Fournier and a miniature calling card of Violette d'Epigny, presumably the name of the doll. Value Points: in his book, Fascinating Dolls, Samy Odin relates the story of the doll. "This was our first lady doll, and has been on public display for more than twenty years! We acquired it from a prominent family in the Protestant valleys of the Piemonte region of Italy...Violette was given to its first Ôlittle mother' around 1865-67 and the wardrobe, which was, for the most part, homemade, reflects the fashion of the end of the Second Empire"....more
