Very Good per stock condition - rifle - 23.5" round barrel - full walnut pistol grip stock with handguard; unfinished stock - about 70% plum brown balance soft gray patina; light oxidation around action/ejector site; , brown - Markings: Crisp - On top of receiver "SPRINGFIELD MODEL 87M / J. STEVENS ARMS CO. CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. U.S.A."; Markings under handguard on left side of bbl. ".22 SHORT LONG OR LONG RIFLE / LONG RIFLE ONLY AS AUTOMATIC" on right side of bbl. "PATENT 2094577 / PATENT 2223093"; "SAFE" within an arrow above safe lever on receiver; "19" stamped on backside of buttplate; - Sights: front shielded block sight; rear adjustable diopter sight - Known as the "Gill Gun" due to the vents on the left side of the receiver or "Clickity Clack" referring to the sound of the slow, clunky semi-auto action when fired. Rumored to have been produced as a possible military Garand like training rifle, it was never accepted by the Government. Research shows not very many of the 87M were made, as they did not sell well, as per their high price for the time. A rare find, this example is in Excellent working order & the metal parts are in Fine condition. However, the stock has been replaced or sanded down, the stock behind buttplate does not bear any marking.
