Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulderplate, narrow blue glass inset eyes with darker blue outer rims, dark eyeliner, painted curly lashes, arched feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with gently upturned lip corners in enigmatic smile, outlined lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig in elaborate coiffure, cork pate, kid poupee body with square-cut collarette, gusset-jointing at elbows, hips and knees, stitched and separated fingers. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: F (head) G (shoulderplate). Comments: Leon Casimir Bru, the distinctive portrait model was deposed by him in 1872 and is considered an apogee of his designs. All-Original French Musical Automaton with Bisque Portrait Lady, Roullet et Decamps 18,000/25,000

22" (56 cm.) Standing upon a green velvet-covered base is an elegantly-costumed bisque portrait lady of society, having slender bisque head with well-defined chin and cheeks, elongated throat, blue glass inset eyes, painted lashes, brushstroked brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, brunette mohair wig, paper mache lady-shaped body and and shapely legs, metal hinged upper arms, bisque forearms. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Roullet et Decamps, circa 1890. When wound, music plays and a wonderful series of synchronized movements occur, suggesting the high society lady is enjoying a day at the races. As the lady lifts her binoculars to her face, the veil on her bonnet raises; then, as her arm lowers, the veil lowers. Having presumably spotted her winning horse, she excitedly taps her parasol six times on the floor. Value Points: the exquisite portrait bisque face perfectly accentuates the presentation, with very lavish original lace costume, on the extremely rare automaton of which no other models are known to exist....more

Rare French Bisque Musical Automaton "Elegant Lady Reclining on Recamier" Lambert 35,000/45,000

19" (48 cm.) h. seated upright x 24"l. x 12"w. Posed in a refined and elegant manner upon a silk-covered wooden-framed recamier with fringed decorations and velvet pillow, is a bisque-head lady with portrait model face, aquiline nose with upturned tip, blue glass paperweight eyes, closed mouth, finely-painted facial details, brunette mohair wig in upswept coiffure, shapely elongated carton torso and slender legs daintily crossed at the ankles, wearing a sheer muslin ruffled over-dress on green silk satin, trimmed with red silk ribbons, and with square-cut neckline designed to emphasize her separately modeled shapely bisque bosom. Condition: generally excellent, music and movement function well. Marks: L.B. (key). Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1885, with bisque portrait head by Jumeau, the rare automaton is actuated by three brass cams plus two steel stud-cams within the clockwork mechanism. When wound, music plays, and a series of realistic actions occur. Luxuriating on her recamier, the elegant lady, seeming to greet guests, turns and nods her head, appearing to arise, while alternately fanning herself with her right hand, and dabbing her face with the handkerchief held in her left hand. She pauses, and then reclines again, evidently having satisfied the social demands of her high station. Value Points: the intricate movements and artistic presentation of the model indicate its luxury creation, as does the rare portrait Jumeau head and its larger size. Few other models are known to exist....more

Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and whistling feature function well. Marks: Depose 205 (and artist checkmarks). Comments: attributed to Phalibois, circa 1893, with especially commissioned character head from Jumeau; when wound, the jaunty lad tilts his head side to side while he whistles the tune "Daisy, Daisy, Bicycle Built for Two"; that song, written in 1892, was perfectly suited for this automaton. Bisque socket head with lustrous brown complexion, black brushstroked brows with decorative glaze, dark eyeliner, lushly-painted black lashes, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with shaded lips, pierced ears, black mohair wig in elaborate coiffure over cork pate, French composition and wooden fully-jointed body in matching brown complexion. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 9. Comments: Emile Jumeau, the model appeared in his "bebes de quatre continents" (dolls of four continents) series introduced in 1889, designed to appeal to international visitors to the 1889 International Exposition in Paris. The classic tete models of Jumeau were created with various complexions to represent different peoples of the world; their ethnicity was accentuated by details such as, on this example, a young East Indian woman, the bindi (red forehead dot) signifying married status, love and prosperity, and by superbly created costumes from the Jumeau atelier. Value Points: extremely rare doll, her rarity enhanced by wonderfully preserved condition, flawless complexion, original elaborate coiffure and headdress, original body and body finish, and outstanding original silk costume with passamenterie and "emerald" jewels. A wooden open-top auto with four rubber-wheeled metal-spoked tires and metal steering wheel and handles, has a seated bisque-head driver with glass eyes, painted features, closed mouth, blonde mohair wig, bisque hands, and is wearing his original brown velvet chauffeur uniform with matching cap and silver medallion trim, black boots. The man separates at midriff to reveal his candy container torso, and the back seat originally opened (now sealed shut) for use as a further candy box.
