Rare Colt Model 1855 Revolving Military Rifle

Lot # 51 (Sale Order: 51 of 821)

serial #163, 56 caliber, 37 1/2" round barrel with octagon breech and a remarkably excellent bore. The rifle shows serial number on wide of tang beneath stock and also in a cylinder flute which is only partially legible but indeed appears to be "163". The cylinder pin has a number "750" which is overstruck with a "143" or "148". The pin fits and functions perfectly and matches perfectly in color and condition. The rifle features a barleycorn front which doubles as a bayonet lug and an original single standing and two folding leaf rear sight. The topstrap is marked within the groove "COL. COLT HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.", this mark remains clear and fully legible. The iron surfaces of this rifle bear a rich brown patina with old scattered light surface oxidation and some scattered light pinprick pitting - truly and very honest and undisturbed surface. Colt's Patent markings on left side of frame remain predominately legible. The brass triggerguard has turned to a very deep and rich brown patina that almost matches the color of the patina on the iron surfaces except for immediately behind the triggerguard where the metal is more of a bronze colored patina. The plain walnut buttstock and full length forend show a rich, dark color and remain in very near excellent condition. The buttstock shows a couple of dings and a small area of loss behind hammer, this looks to have been done by a period user, perhaps to help facilitate full-cock. The rifle is not martially marked but it comes with a correct U.S. marked bayonet which fits perfectly. These 1855 military rifles come in many variations, this is the longest barrel length and the bore is truly excellent. Just a very nice and very honest Colt revolving rifle. (18158-2) {ANTIQUE}

Colt Ace Commercial Model Semi-Automatic Pistol

Lot # 52 (Sale Order: 52 of 821)

serial #1635, 22 LR, 4 3/4" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces retain about 95-97% original blue, the loss is due to some very light front strap wear, muzzle wear at the front of the slide and some light high edge and contact point wear; there is a very light impact mark at the left rear sharp edge on the slide, it is unobtrusive. The bright-polished surface of the barrel shows only some very light staining and operational usage. The fully checkered walnut grips rate very good plus to excellent showing only some very minor flattening of the points. Included are two original two-tone magazines, the original box pencil-numbered to the gun, an instruction manual, Colts "special instructions" pamphlet and the original test target serial numbered to the pistol. The box itself is somewhat tender showing old paper-taped repairs to the lid, now also bolstered with cellophane tape on both box top and bottom, a couple of corners showing small missing pieces. There is a very very light reassembly scratch on the left side of the frame and the very rear of the hammer spur has been dressed and relieved during the period of use, it is well done and unobtrusive, another hammer could easily be obtained if one wished. A very nice Commercial Ace overall. (38100-24) {C&R} [Walter "Walt" Rauch Collection]

Exceptional 1968 Colt U.S._National Match Pistol by Rock Island Arsenal

Lot # 53 (Sale Order: 53 of 821)

serial #939418, 45 ACP, 5" National Match barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces of this final Rock Island Arsenal-built national match pistol retaining the 98-99% original arsenal phosphate finish showing some sparsely scattered very light handling marks, most of which do not breech the blued and phosphate finish. There are a few spots of extremely light surface oxidation along the left lower edge of the slide, they are very unobtrusive and there is a very small area of wear on the right front of the dust cover. Remarkably, this pistol retains the white painted DOD acceptance mark on the frame to the rear of the right grip, these markings easily worn away by oil and solvents. The fully checkered walnut grips rate excellent. in addition to the normal markings including the left-side "FJA" inspectors marking and right side ordnance wheel, the pistol exhibits arsenal rebuild marks "NM" on the right root of the triggerguard and "RIA" on the right of the frame just above this. 1968 was the last year these pistols were made at Rock Island Arsenal, this example featuring an appropriate "U.S." marked Kensight rear sight, the national match front appears to have been regulated very slightly. The Colt barrel is national match part numbered "7791414" and numbered with the last four digits of the pistols serial number "9418" on the right hood of the barrel. The slide is the correct national match "7791435" part number and is numbered to the gun beneath the firing pin stop "9418", the national match bushing number "7267718" is at the front of the gun. There is a long aluminum trigger adjustable for overtravel installed and the frontstrap of the frame has been neatly metal checkered, both by Rock Island Arsenal. A single unmarked seven round magazine is included, it is numbered to the gun "9418" on its right lower edge in electric DC pencil. Really a superb example overall, very seldom-encountered retaining the white painted acceptance stamping. (38100-34) {MODERN} [Walter "Walt" Rauch Collection]

Portuguese Model 1906-34 Luger Pistol

Lot # 54 (Sale Order: 54 of 821)

serial #2036v, 30 Luger, 4 5/8" barrel with a very good plus bore which is bright with sharp rifling but shows some minor frosting within the grooves. The metal surfaces retain about 90% original blue, the front and back straps are toning somewhat to a brown patina. There was wear to pewter atop the receiver in the area of the "GNR" marking, this area now shows a bit of cold-applied touch-up blue, as does the sideplate which shows some remnants of light pitting. The balance of the arm shows a few scattered spots of very light oxidation and wear to pewter on the high edges and contact points. Both the trigger and ejector have been polished and their straw restored, but the safety lever, magazine catch and takedown lever appear untouched and have faded primarily to a pewter patina with trace original straw. The few numbered parts are matching, the grooved firing pin is not numbered. The checkered walnut grips rate very good showing light wear to their points, they are stamp-numbered to the gun on their interior. There is a single aluminum-based bright-bodied magazine included which shows some remnants of some light oxidation and a few spots a very light pitting; it is un-numbered. A very nice example overall to fill that hole in the Luger collection without breaking the bank. (38050-319) {C&R}

serial # 22693, 9 mm, 4" barrel with a mostly bright very good plus bore which shows strong rifling but with light frosting in the grooves its full-length. The metal surfaces retain about 90% original blue, the loss is due to mottled fading and flaking to a plum brown, also with a few spots of minor oxidation and some scattered spots of very light pinprick pitting. The sideplate is mostly a brown patina but the trigger, ejector and extractor show very good fading pale straw. The toggle is DWM-marked and the few numbered parts are matching, the un-grooved firing pin is un-numbered. The checkered walnut grips rate very good plus to perhaps excellent showing only a few minor flattened or chipped points, they are un-numbered exhibiting only a star stamping on their interior. Included is a single bright-bodied wood-based magazine which is marked along the bottom "Cal. 9 mm", the magazine rating very good plus showing some remnants of light oxidation staining on the body. Lot # 56 (Sale Order: 56 of 821)

serial #9282, 9 mm, 4" barrel with a very good bore which shows sharp rifling but with light frosting and minor pitting within the grooves. The metal surfaces retain about 80-85% original blue, the primary loss being toning to gray on the front and back straps, also with areas of light pinprick pitting there. There is some toning on the high edges and contact points as well and light pitting on the left side of the muzzle boss. The ejector, magazine release and right side of trigger show some very good fading straw colors while the takedown lever and safety have toned primarily to a pewter. All of the numbered parts are matching including the grooved firing pin and the toggle is "Simson & Co./Suhl" marked. The arm exhibits typical Simson inspection marks as well as the Simson army test proof on the right side of the receiver. The checkered walnut grips rate good to about very good showing a number of compressed and flaked points, they are stamp-numbered to the gun on their interior. Included with the gun is a single wood-based magazine numbered "9769" with a small "+" mark beneath. The body is bright showing a bit of light flaking and very light oxidation. The left grip is slightly loose and the edges of the magazine base show some light chipping but these are very minor issues. Overall a slightly salty example of the very rarely encountered Simson & Co. Luger. (38050-136) {C&R}

Mauser P.08 Luger Pistol with Imperial Japanese Markings

Lot # 57 (Sale Order: 57 of 821)

serial #7255c, 9 mm, 4" barrel with an about excellent bore which shows bright crisp rifling but the tiniest amount of frosting within the grooves. The metal surfaces of this interesting pistol retain about 97-98% original blue, the loss is some very light high edge and muzzle wear with some light drifting to plum on the rear face of the frame. All of the numbered parts are matching including the grooved firing pin and the toggle is "42" marked with the chamber showing a 1940 date. Just ahead of the 1940 date is a Japanese chrysanthemum, the barrel ahead of this shows kanji characters, these markings being extremely nicely etched rather than stamped showing appropriate oxidation within and clearly done during the period of use. The checkered walnut grips rate very good plus showing some minor compression or flaking of the points, they are stamp-numbered to the gun on their interior; the right grip is very slightly loose, an extremely minor issue. Included the gun is a matching aluminum-based Schmeisser Haenel magazine which is Waffenamt 655 marked. While there has been a good deal of controversy about these Japanese-marked Lugers, an identical gun was recently sold from the famous Geoffrey Sturgis collection in 2014, catalogued by one of the leading Luger authorities in the United States, lending credence to their authenticity. Overall a very interesting gun, further research may prove the true pedigree of these Japanese-marked Mauser-made P.08 pistols. (38050-131) {C&R}

Lot # 58 (Sale Order: 58 of 821)

serial #236y, 9mm, 4" barrel with a bright about excellent bore showing only minor frosting along its length. The metal surfaces retain about 98% original blue, the loss due to very light muzzle and sharp edge wear. This is a full 1941 chamber-dated, all blue example with the 7-line Mauser Banner on the toggle. All of the visible numbered parts are matching including the grooved firing pin. This superb pistol is equipped with a sear safety and features an "eagle/(N)" commercial proof on the left side of the receiver and an "eagle/(L) police acceptance mark on the right side. The checkered walnut grips rate very good plus with the right side grip showing a number of chipped or flattened diamonds, it is un-numbered and "SE-655" stamped on its interior. The Left side grip has only minor flattening of the points, it is stamp-numbered "42" and also "SE-655" stamped on its interior. These 1941-dated chambers continued for only 600 examples (1y-600y), after which time they went to a two-digit date code above the chamber, making police accepted Lugers within this short serial number range, with the full 1941 date, to be true rarities. serial #289069. 44 WCF, 24" round barrel with button magazine and a very good bore that shows just a little light pitting in a few areas with strong rifling throughout. This rifle is signed "J.ULRICH" on the lower tang to rear of trigger and is engraved in $4.00 pattern. The action and sideplates feature English scroll engraving with a dog head on right sideplate emanating from the scroll and a bull elk on the left sideplate surrounded in English scroll. Scroll also appears on the nosecap, dust cover, cartridge carrier and the top of the smooth steel shotgun buttplate. The condition of the rifle is wonderful with the barrel retaining 95% evenly thinning original blue finish overall. The action and sideplates retain 90% plus original color case-hardened finish which as just softened slightly over the years and has a lovely appearance. The checkered pistolgrip buttstock and forend are of exhibition grade walnut with straight grain through wrist and with tremendous shimmering crotch-wood figure emanating from the top of the comb just behind the nose and throughout the body of the stock. The stocks rate excellent with 95% of their original Winchester finish and with checkering remaining crisp. The buttplate retains about 90% original blue finish while the loading gate retains strong original fire blue. The rifle comes in a green baize lined, partitioned case canvas case with leather trim and a brass disc in the lid which is engraved "YB". The rifle comes with a copy of its factory letter which confirms the configuration including the casehardening and factory engraving and shows receipt in the warehouse on March 13, 1889 and being shipped on February 6, 1890. A note at the end of the letter reads "Returned by Paris and sent to New York". in addition to the factory letter also included is a copy of an R.L. Wilson letter outlining the rifle in detail calling the case a factory supplied item. Winchester sent 45 model 1873's to Paris, mostly carbines, many in nickel plated finish and only four engraved rifles. One engraved rifle had $50 of gold inlay and is illustrated on page 195 of Winchester Engraving, two carbines with $2.50 and $4.00 engraving and this rifle which also has $4.00 engraving. Only the two rifles are known along with an engraved 1886 rifle, all three of these engraved Paris exhibition rifles (two 1873 rifles and one 1886 rifle) were all found in South America according to Wilson's letter. Included with the rifle is a bronze disc from the "Exposition Universelle / 1889" with the reverse side being marked "W.R.A. Co." and the outer edge being marked "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS" and "GRAND PRIX". Winchester was the only American arms company to receive this award. Exhibition Arms are among the most sought after of collectible arms and this rifle is well-documented, signed by the engraver, complete with case and bronze disc and remains in very fine condition. Wilson's letter concludes with the following sentence: This exciting new discovery is worthy of the finest museum or private collection of embellished and historic American firearms. Colt U.S. Single Action Army Cavalry Revolver with Nickel Finish

Lot # 65 (Sale Order: 65 of 821)

serial #95798, 45 Colt, 7 1/2" barrel with a mostly bright very good plus to near excellent bore which shows strong rifling but also with a few spots of light oxidation or very light pitting, more prominent nearer the muzzle. An interesting revolver which falls into the known range of Colt "buyback" guns, this example features an over all later, excellent quality nickel plate. There is some light loss and very light pitting on the right side of the ejector rod housing and a few light flakes missing from the barrel, most notably around the front sight and at the muzzle with a small area of loss near the frame. The cylinder shows some overall light oxidation and flaking along the sharp edges around the flutes. The frame shows a bit more flaking on the high edges and contact points as well as the loading gate and recoil shield. The top of the backstrap knuckle has toned plum as has the frontstrap. Many of the screws still show some good pale fire temper blue with strong traces on the trigger and mottled color case-hardening present on the hammer. The revolver has been fitted during the period of use with a pair of genuine mother-of-pearl grips with a carved right-side steer head. The grips are un-numbered and fit rather well, being slightly shy along the butt edge and showing minor flakes left and right at the top of the frame. The numbers are matching on barrel, frame, triggerguard, backstrap and cylinder with David Clark's inspectors markings on the underside of the barrel, leading edge of the frame and on the cylinder. There is a light "U.S." beneath the nickel on the left side of the frame to the rear of the patent dates. Really a very good example over all which seems to retain about 92% of what is likely Colt factory nickel , this example falling within a block of 15 numbers in the Colt records which was delivered to the U.S. Government in 1883, then re-purchased by Colt in 1888, the nearest number to this revolver's serial number being "95918"; revolver number "95743" and "95849" are also known DFC series nickel-plated revolvers, all this according to Cavalry & Artillery Revolvers a Continuing Study

Wonderful Factory Hoggson Engraved Henry Rifle by New Haven Arms Company

Lot # 70 (Sale Order: 70 of 821)

serial #8298, 44 RF, 24" octagon barrel with a very good bore. This rifle features factory engraving along with a highly figured walnut buttstock. The rifle bears all matching numbers on the barrel, frame, stock and buttplate. The engraving is the familiar pattern with loose relief flowing scroll on sides of frame, flower blossoms on the front panels and a dog on point on left side of frame. The rear of the frame bears the two punch dots on either side which is normally found on rifles engraved in this pattern and was thought to be a grading mark denoting the level of engraving. The lower tang is marked with a single letter "H" at the rear indicating that this rifle was inspected at the factory by B. Tyler Henry himself. The barrel assembly bears a pleasing and even brown patina being generally free of pitting and with all markings remaining clear and legible. The rifle is equipped with sling swivel and ring on left side of barrel and buttstock. The frame bears a pleasing mellow patina with engraving having a lovely appearance. The figured walnut buttstock rates excellent having been very lightly refinished long ago and having an excellent look. The rifle is sighted with a brass blade front and standard Henry ladder rear sights. The rifle comes with a four page George Madis letter discussing all details of the rifle and blessing it as all original as made by New Haven Arms Company. Serial #8300 is illustrated in Les Quick's the Henry Rifle, it is engraved in a nearly identical pattern including the two punch dots at rear of frame but it shows the jumping buck in place of the pointing dog. Engraved Henry rifles are coveted by collectors, this is a very fine example awaiting its new home in a fine collection of Winchester rifles. (18087-2) {ANTIQUE} [Kenneth Fry Collection]

Wonderful Cased Colt 1849 Pocket Model Revolver serial #226365 all matching including wedge, .31 cal., 4" octagon barrel with a near excellent bore. This revolver bears the letter "L" above or below each of the serial numbers. This "L" was an export mark used by Colt on guns made in Hartford and intended for shipment to London. This revolver is unusual in that it has the "L" but does not bear any London proofs meaning it was never sold in England and in fact may have never left our shores. The condition of the revolver is wonderful with the barrel retaining about 95% bright original blue finish with just a little light flaking and with those areas bearing a pleasing smooth brown patina. The loading lever shows very strong original color case-hardened finish. The frame retains 98% brilliant original color case-hardened finish while the brass gripstraps retain about 85% original silver plated finish with loss being due to thinning on the backstrap. The one-piece walnut grip rates excellent with 95% original finish remaining. The revolver comes cased in its original walnut case which rates excellent with proper scribe marks around hinges and lock and with no cracks in the lid or soft wood bottom. The interior of the case is lined in red baize which is excellent and the included accessories are a nice eagle flask, brass two cavity "COLT'S / PATENT" marked mould and a small Eley cap tin. The front of the case has an applied round brass keyhole escutcheon which is held in place with two tiny screws. Key is present. A very nice, high condition cased Colt Pocket.
