Smith & Wesson No. 2 Lever Action Repeating Pistol 6 in. Barrel

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 998)

Smith & Wesson No. 2 Lever Action Repeating Pistol with Scarce Six Inch Barrel

Smith & Wesson No. 2 Lever-Action pistol manufactured c. 1854. This large frame .41 caliber pistol has the rarely encountered six inch barrel. The pistol has the distinctive part-round/part-octagon barrel with integral magazine, toggle lever with round finger hole and two-piece rosewood grips with flared butt. This pistol has the Type II features which include: (1) distinctive hump on the top of the frame, (2) two spring screws on the bottom of the frame, (3) crowned muzzle and (4) T-bar magazine locking spring. The barrel has a small flattened cone front sight. A fixed L-shaped rear sight is mounted on the top of the frame. The hammer has border-less hand-cut knurling on the spur. The lever lacks the spur usually found on No. 2 pistols with eight inch barrels. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped "CAST-STEEL/SMITH & WESSON/NORWICH CT/PATENT" in two lines using four different stamps. The serial number "30" is stamped on the lower right side of the frame beneath the grip and on the back face of the rear sight. The sides and top of the frame and back strap and the back of the hammer are decorated with simple scroll and leaf factory engraving. Smith & Wesson manufactured approximately 500 No. 2 Lever Action pistols c. 1854-55. Most of these pistols had eight inch barrels. No. 2 Lever Action pistols with six inch barrels are extremely rare.

Class: Antique

Fair. The pistol is complete with some repair and extensive restoration. The barrel, frame and hammer have a mottled gray-brown patina with scattered pitting. The professionally made replacement barrel extension has been artificially aged to match balance of barrel, and there are file marks on the back strap. The open, scroll and leaf, factory engraving remains clear. The barrel markings are fully legible, and the serial numbers are sharp. The grips are replacements, and there is a professionally repaired crack in the right grip. This is a solid representative example of an extremely rare S&W No. 2 Lever Action Repeating Pistol with six-inch barrel. This historically important pistol would be a key addition to any advanced Smith & Wesson or Winchester collection.

Volcanic Lever Action No. 1 Pocket Pistol Factory Engraved

Lot # 2 (Sale Order: 2 of 998)

Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic Lever Action No. 1 Pocket Pistol

Volcanic No. 1 Lever Action Pocket Pistol with six-inch barrel and factory engraving manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. in New Haven, Connecticut, c. 1858. This pistol is pictured on page 77 of "VOLCANIC FIREARMS" by Lewis and Rutter. The pistol has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral eight-shot magazine, loading lever with finger hole, brass receiver and two-piece walnut grips. The receiver is silver-plated, the barrel is blued, the trigger, hammer and lever are casehardened, and the grips have a varnished piano finish. The top and sides of the receiver and back strap are decorated with the simple, open scrollwork typical of New Haven Arms Co. factory engraved firearms. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "NEW HAVEN CONN./PATENT FEB. 14 1854" in two lines. The serial number "803" is stamped on the lower left side of the frame beneath the grips and on the inside of both grips. Volcanic No.1 Pocket Pistols with six-inch barrels are rare; only 225 were manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. between 1857and 1860. Engraved No.1 Pocket pistols with six-inch barrels are much more rare than pistols with plain receivers.

Class: Antique

Very good. This pistol retains 25% of the original high polish blue and traces of the original silver-plated finish on protected areas of the barrel and receiver. The balance of the barrel/magazine has a gray patina. The barrel surfaces are light pitted and there are several shallow dents on the top flat. The barrel markings are fully legible. The brass receiver has a good-looking aged patina. Significant amounts of silver-plated finish are present on the inside of the grip and on the butt. The well-executed factory engraved scrollwork is crisp and deep. The receiver is free of significant handling marks, and the side plate joints are tight. The hammer, lever and trigger have a mottled gray patina with scattered light pitting and age discoloration. The refinished grips are fair condition with the butts sanded on both sides. This is a solid representative example of a factory engraved New Haven Arms Co. No. 1 Pocket Pistol with six-inch barrel.

Cased Portrait of a Union Soldier Armed with a Volcanic Pistol

Lot # 3 (Sale Order: 3 of 998)

Rare Cased Image of a Union Soldier Armed with a Rifle-Musket and Volcanic Pistol

This 2 1/8 by 3 3/8 inch image depicts a bearded soldier holding his cap in one hand, a rifle-musket with affixed bayonet in his other, and a Volcanic pistol tucked into his belt. There is a modern sheet on the back of the portrait that identifies him as "(2ND LT & THEN CAPT.)/CARLOS CARR/BRANDON, VT./1ST REG. CO. 'G' VT. VOLS/4TH INFANTRY." Carr served with the 4th Vermont Infantry from September 1861 until May 1865 in companies A, C, E, and F. He was captured at Weldon Railroad on June 23, 1864, just three days after being promoted to 1st lieutenant of Company F and was held as a prisoner of war at Macon, Georgia, until he was paroled on March 1, 1865. The 4th Vermont Infantry fought at many significant battles including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. The consignor confirmed that a carte de visite of Carr in another private collection matches the man in this portrait. The case is marked "GENUINE/UNION CASE,/IMPROVED./Fine Gilt and Burnished/Hinge./S. PECK & CO.,/MANUFACTURERS," under the portrait. Civil War portraits have long been collectible. Those depicting armed men are especially sought out, and those with men carrying rare firearms are even more desirable. Additionally, this is very likely the only identified image of a soldier with a Volcanic pistol.

Class: Other

Fine overall with mild storage wear and some slight chips in the case. This piece would be an excellent addition to a Civil War collection and perfect for display alongside a Volcanic pistol.

New Haven Arms Co. Henry Rifle Rifle 44 Henry RF

Lot # 10 (Sale Order: 10 of 998)

Fine Three Digit Number First Model Henry Lever Action Rifle

Henry Lever Action Rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company in October 1862. The rifle has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral 15-shot magazine and brass (gunmetal) receiver and buttplate. The barrel/magazine is blued, the hammer and lever are color casehardened and the straight grain American walnut stock is oil finished. The rifle has the first pattern receiver with alternate rear sight dovetail and early buttplate with rounded heel. The barrel has an early style, half-moon shaped, nickel-silver front sight blade and dovetail mounted, folding leaf, rear sight. This first style rear sight has "1000" marked below the center notch at the top of the leaf and narrow elevator bar with rounded ends. The magazine has the small diameter follower and the lower receiver has the early, straight follower cut. The buttplate and tang have hand-fitted, serial numbered, screws. The rifle stock and barrel are not fitted with a sling swivel or hook for sling loop which were special order items on early production Henry rifles. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the first style legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS. CO. NEWHAVEN. CT" in two lines. This legend is approximately 2 17/32 inches long and uses serif letters for all the marking except the second "NEWHAVEN" which is stamped in block letters. The serial number, "953" is stamped: (1) on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver, (2) on the lower left side of the receiver tang beneath the stock, (3) in the upper tang inlet of the stock, (4) the inside of the buttplate heel, (5) on the shanks of the two hand-fitted buttplate screws and (6) on the shanks of the two short tang screws. Only early production Henry rifles had serial numbered tang screws. All of the visible serial numbers match. The Henry rifle was the most advanced rifle available during the Civil War. Although the federal government armed only one regiment (1st District of Columbia Cavalry) with Henry rifles, it is generally believed that most Henry rifles manufactured during the Civil War were privately purchased by individual soldiers who wanted the advantage of a 15-shot, lever action repeating rifle. Most of the early sales of Henry rifles were made by New Haven Arms Co., agents in Louisville, Kentucky and surrounding states. Henry rifles proved to be especially popular with Midwestern soldiers. By 1864 several Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky regiments were armed with significant numbers of privately purchased Henry rifles.

Class: Antique

Fine. This early Henry rifle is all original and retains 40% of the original blue finish which is abundant in the protected areas of the barrel. The blue on the barrel/magazine has aged to a good-looking, plum brown patina. The barrel/magazine has sharp edges with crisp address and serial number. Wear is limited to a few minor dents and scratches. The delicate folding leaf rear sight is complete and has crisp markings. The brass receiver and buttplate have not been polished and have an attractive patina. The receiver has scattered, minor, dents and scratches with tight side-plate joints. The buttplate shows moderate wear with slight scratches on the heel and toe and some small patches of age discoloration. The hammer, trigger and lever have an even brown patina. The stock is in very good condition and retains about 75% of the original varnish finish with moderate handling wear. The stock has stains on the sides of the wrist and has several light dents and scratches. This is a very fine example of a first year production Henry rifle that remains in outstanding condition.

Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine

Lot # 11 (Sale Order: 11 of 998)

Factory Engraved Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine with Factory Letters

Winchester Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine manufactured in 1879. The carbine is accompanied by two Winchester Museum letters dated 1968 and 1985. The earlier letter is addressed to "Mr. H. Garcia" of Monterrey, N.L. Mexico which indicates that this carbine may have originally been sold in Mexico. The second letter describes this carbine as: "carbine, full nickel, engraved" and states that it was shipped from Winchester on September 4, 1879, "with 4 other guns with the same specifications to the same order". The carbine features the second style receiver with screw-fastened dust cover rail and dust cover with oval finger grip. The carbine has a 20-inch round barrel with full length magazine, first style barrel band with integral front sight blade, two-leaf folding rear sight, staple-mounted saddle ring on the left side of the receiver, factory drilled and tapped upper tang and carbine style buttplate with sliding trap door. Internally, the tang is stamped "c185" on left side which matches assembly number to stock and buttplate. The carbine has a full nickel-plated finish and fancy grade walnut stock and forearm. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1873" in fancy letters. The serial number is stamped in script numerals on the lever latch and rear tang screw. The barrel and cartridge elevator are, correctly, not marked with a caliber designation. The carbine features factory scroll and punch-dot engraving on the top, sides and bottom of the receiver, side plates, upper and lower tang, cartridge elevator, dust cover and buttplate heel. The left side plate is engraved with a grazing deer in a round panel. The engraving was almost certainly executed by John or Herman Ulrich. The engraving style is very similar to nickel-plated Winchester Model 1873 rifle, serial number 41532, illustrated on page 174 of "The Winchester Book" by George Madis.

Class: Antique

Fine. This carbine has been period re-plated and had the stock refinished but retains all of the original components. The nickel-plated finish is about 85% complete with some scattered flaking and discoloration. The barrel and receiver markings are all clear, and the engraving is sharp. The nicely figured, deluxe walnut stock and forearm have a high polish, piano style finish with a few minor handling marks and spots of discoloration. There is a 1/8-inch gap between the forearm and receiver that could be adjusted. This is a fine representative example of a rare, deluxe, nickel-plated and factory engraved Winchester Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine.

Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine

Manufactured in 1874. In addition to the standard markings the upper left front of the receiver is marked with a "B" inside of a shield (origin unknown, but most likely a retailer mark). From the upper left corner of the shield to below the bottom right is struck with a single line. Winchester Prototype Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 13 (Sale Order: 13 of 998)

Unique Winchester/Browning Prototype 1895 Flat Side Lever Action Rifle

This is a prototype bottom feed, centerfire, lever action rifle similar in design to the early production flat sided Model 1895 found in the first 5,000 rifles manufactured from 1895 to 1896. The solid lever is also a similar feature to the flat sided Model 1895 design. The Model 1895 was based on John Browning's U.S. Patent number 549,345 that was granted to him on November 5, 1895. Browning's original patent model had a flat sided receiver, and Winchester produced the flat sided variation before introducing the contoured or fluted receiver that was made for most of the production run. Winchester's partnership with John Browning began in 1883 and lasted 16 years. Browning's legacy at Winchester is marked by the company's most notable late 19th century firearms such as the Model 1885 single shot rifle, Model 1887 lever action shotgun, Model 1897 slide action shotgun and lever action Models 1886, 1892, 1894 and 1895. Of course, not every Browning patent Winchester purchased made it to the factory production line. The trail leading to even the most successful designs is often steeped in documented and undocumented trials and errors. This Winchester prototype had a barrel fitted by the factory with dovetail blade and elevation adjustable sights and is marked "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight and "40-72 WCF" at the breech. The barrel address is indicative of the type of marking used on early Model 1895s. Later production Model 1895s eliminated the small dashes before the entire marking was omitted. The Winchester factory oval proof that began to be used in 1905 is stamped on the barrel and receiver at the breech. The underside of the barrel under the forearm is marked with a "VP" proof. The rifle lacks a serial number. The upper tang and receiver are unmarked. The lever and buttplate are casehardened, and the remaining surfaces are blue. Mounted on a smooth schnabel forearm with ebony insert and pistol grip stock with crescent buttplate.

Class: Antique

Fine as factory rebarreled. The barrel retains 85% thinned original blue finish and the receiver, bolt and magazine retain 30% original blue finish with the overall balance a smooth brown patina. The lever and buttplate retain 80% vivid original case colors. The wood is very fine with some minor handling markings. Mechanically excellent. This is truly a historic representative example of a prototype of one of John Browning's most innovative lever action rifles!

Exhibition Engraved and Gold Inlaid Winchester Model 94 Lever Action Carbine

Offered here is an exhibition engraved, gold inlaid and carved Winchester Model 94 carbine with a March 16, 1967 dated copy of a Winchester Museum letter. The aforementioned letter confirms the engraving, gold inlay and fancy checkered select, straight grain walnut stock. According to the letter, shipping records indicate that the carbine was a factory exhibition piece from 1934 through 1948. Subsequent information supplied by Cody Firearms Records Office dated May 24, 2017 only state that the "serial number applied on November 24, 1936…No configuration information available." The receiver has a floral scroll engraving on a punch dot background with gold inlaid borders and gold inlaid game scenes. The left side of the receiver has a bear in a mountain scene, and the right side has a running stag in a woodland scene. The game scenes are early patterns that are found in Winchester's "Highly Finished Arms." Scrollwork and gold inlay accents extend to the lever and barrel at the muzzle and breech. The bolt has engraved leaves and scrollwork. Scrollwork is also featured on the buttplate tang. The forearm and straight grip stock exhibit checkering accented with carved floral scroll motifs. A similar Model 94 carbine (milestone serial number 2500000) is identified and pictured in George Madis' "The Winchester Book" on page 446. It is fitted with a hooded ramp front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight. The left side of the barrel has the Winchester legend, the right side of the barrel has the two-line address, the top of the barrel and receiver have a Winchester factory oval proof at the breech, and the upper tang has the three-line Winchester trademark information.

Smith & Wesson Volcanic No. 1 Lever Action Repeating Pistol

Lot # 17 (Sale Order: 17 of 998)

Exceptional, Desirable and Documented Smith & Wesson No. 1 Lever Action Repeating Pistol

No. 1 Lever Action Pocket pistol manufactured by Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson in Norwich, Connecticut, circa 1854-55. Total production of the No.1 lever action repeating pistol was approximately 1,200 pistols. This pistol is identified and pictured in Lewis and Rutter's book "Volcanic Firearms" on page 33. The pistol has the distinctive part-round/part-octagon barrel with integral six-shot magazine, toggle lever with finger hole and two-piece, bag-shaped grips. The pistol has the Type II features which include: (1) crowned muzzle, (2) rounded T-bar spring, (3) narrow muzzle collar and (4) clam-shell type magazine follower. The loading lever does not have a spur on the finger hole. The barrel has a brass front sight with flattened blade. A fixed rear sight is mounted on the frame. The frame, side plates, back strap and back of the hammer are decorated with the open scroll and leaf pattern engraving which was standard on most S&W No. 1 and No. 2 Lever Action Repeating Pistols. The left barrel flat is lightly stamped: "PATENT/FEB 14, 1854" in two lines, and the top of the barrel is stamped: "SMITH & WESSON/ NORWICH CT." in two lines. The right barrel flat is stamped: "CAST-STEEL" reading up from the magazine. The serial number "E 61" is stamped on the left side of the frame beneath the grips. "E61" is stamped on the bottom of the carrier, lever and "61" is stamped on the inside of each grip. All of the visible serial numbers match. The barrel/magazine are browned, the frame, side plates and lever are blued, and the hammer is color casehardened. The bag-shaped, rosewood grips have a high polish piano finish. The S&W lever action repeating pistols are rare and historically significant. Provenance: Bobby Smith and Steven Rutter collections.

Class: Antique

Exceptionally fine. 85% of the plum brown finish is present on the barrel with light high point wear. The barrel markings are extremely crisp. The frame, side plates and lever retain 50% plus of the delicate high polish blue finish. There is some minor age discoloration on the bottom of the receiver. Most of the mottled case colors are present on the hammer. The grips are in excellent condition and retain close to 90% of the piano finish with a few very minor handling marks. The well-executed factory scroll and leaf engraving is crisp and deep. This is a really outstanding example of a scarce and historically significant S&W No. 1 Lever Action Repeating Pistol.

Portrait of an Armed Union Soldier

Lot # 18 (Sale Order: 18 of 998)

Desirable Gutta Percha Cased Image of a Union Soldier Armed with a Rifle-Musket, Revolver, and a Smith & Wesson Volcanic Pistol

The image measures 2 1/2 by 3 inches and shows a bearded Union soldier armed with a rifle-musket with affixed bayonet, what appears to be a Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver, and a S&W Volcanic pistol. The rounded butt of the pistol gives it away as a Smith & Wesson No. 1 Volcanic. Only around 1,200 of these pistols were manufactured in the mid-1850s. There is some minor blush applied to the soldier's cheeks and dark shadowing from developing on the left. Removing the portrait reveals another portrait of a younger man on the back in civilian attire. The case also has a "GENUINE/UNION CASE,/IMPROVED./Fine Gilt and Burnished/Hinge./S. PECK & CO.,/MANUFACTURERS" label. Images of armed Civil War soldiers are always desirable, but images with men armed with rare firearms like the Smith & Wesson Volcanic in this example are even more highly collectible and valuable.

Class: Other

Fine overall with mild storage wear. The back image has some surface chipping.

Winchester Factory Bullet Board

Lot # 19 (Sale Order: 19 of 998)

Desirable Winchester Factory Bullet Board

This is an early cartridge board issued by Winchester. It is the first to use what will later become the "classic" design by using green lithograph paper with the bullet information in gold print and the Winchester shells mounted directly to the board. The board is incased in a custom wood frame with a glass front which measures 47 inches by 35 1/2 inches. The cartridge board itself measures 41 inches by 29 1/2 inches including the frame. The cartridges are in an inverted "V" with cartridges in an arch on each side, a circle of cartridges in the middle and shotgun shells and 6 cap tins on the lower portion. The back side of the original paper backing is correctly marked "COMPLIMENTS OF WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN, CONN" in the center and "Please hang in a/Conspicuous Place" on the lower left hand corner. These boards are seldom seen and rarely offered for sale.

Class: Other

Fine as custom glassed in. Much of the gold is absent from the lettering at the top (Winchester Repeating Arms Co.) and almost all remains on the remaining lettering. There is some minor scattered flaking of the dark green background. There is some water damage and damage where a sticker has been removed, removing the background, on the upper right hand side and there is some minor tears along the right side. The custom frame is very well built and is excellent. A rare Winchester pre- single W ammunition board.

Winchester Model 1866 Musket

Lot # 20 (Sale Order: 20 of 998)

Exceptionally Fine Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Musket with Bayonet

This is a very fine early production Winchester Model 1866 Musket that was manufactured in 1870. The Winchester factory termed these as an "Infantry Rifle" as a marketing tool to encourage customers to think of these as a graceful, lightweight modern rifle instead of using the term "Musket" which evoked images of the large bore, long barreled musket used during the Civil War. These rifles have the distinctive 27-inch round barrel with 24-inch magazine, 17-inch forearm and three barrel bands. Factory sling swivels are mounted on the middle barrel band and stock. The stock has a brass carbine style buttplate with sliding trapdoor. This example was intended to be used with a socket bayonet that locks on to the front sight base, so it lacks the bayonet stud found on the front band of some muskets. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS NEWHAVEN CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER .16. 1860" between the lower barrel band and the rear sight, and the barrel is fitted with a Henry style two position, folding rear sight that is marked "2-8" (200-800) yards, with the 900 yard notch on top of the staff. The serial number, "34224", is stamped in block letters on the lower tang behind the trigger. It has the early style recessed breech end of the barrel and the first pattern breech bolt still correctly chambered in 44 RF. It has the first pattern small loop loading lever, and the hammer spur has the early borderless knurling. The barrel, magazine, barrel bands and loading gate are blued. The hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut. The musket is complete with a socket bayonet with 15 1/2 inch blade. The bayonet has no markings.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine with 70% plus of the original blue finish on the barrel and magazine tube. The rear area of the barrel has a thinning mixed blue/brown patina finish, and better blue finish is on the magazine tube. The excellent receiver, side plates and buttplate have a very attractive aged golden patina look. The sides plates all original as the dovetail edges are sharp and crisp. The loading gate retains 80% bright original nitre blue. The stock and forend are both in very fine condition with 90% of the varnish finish overall showing minor handling marks and light pressure dents on the sides in some areas. The wood to metal fit is tight. The socket bayonet is in very good condition with traces of the blue finish in the protected areas with some very fine erosion overall. A very nice, high condition all original Winchester Model 1866 Musket.

Lot # 21 (Sale Order: 21 of 998)

Documented Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Fancy Sporting Rifle with Very Rare Extra-Heavy Octagon Barrel

The letter describes this rifle, as: "Rifle, 40/65 Caliber, 28 inch, x-heavy, Octagon barrel, Set trigger, Checkered stock with pistol grip" and "Rocky Mountain front sight". The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on November 25, 1889. In addition to the rare special order extra-heavy 28-inch barrel and single-set trigger, this rifle has a deluxe, fancy grade, highly figured forearm and pistol grip stock with Winchester "Style H" checkering. The bottom of the pistol grip has a factory ebony insert. The barrel has a Lyman folding combination front sight and a unique custom rear sight that may have been made by Freund Bros. or Carlos Gove. The original rear sight dovetail is fitted with a blank. The dovetail mounted rear sight is 8 1/8-inches long with a semi-hooded rear aperture and antique ivory elevator bar with four notches. A Lyman folding combination rear sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The rifle has a blued barrel, magazine, bolt, loading gate and trigger. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplates are color casehardened. The stock and forearm have a high polish piano finish. The two-line Winchester legend on the top barrel flat is partly covered by the rear sight finial. The caliber designation, "40-65 W.C.F." is roll stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight base and the receiver. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are stamped in two lines on the lower tang behind the trigger, and the serial number "36890" is stamped in script numerals between the tang screws. Extra heavy barrels are very rare on Model 1886 rifles. A Model 1886 fancy sporting rifle with extra heavy barrel is an exceptionally rare rifle.

Class: Antique

Fine. The barrel has 70% all of the original blue finish with light edge wear. The Winchester legend and caliber markings are sharp. The custom rear sight retains about 30% of the original fire blue finish; the balance of the sight has faded to a silver patina. The blue on the full length magazine is thin. The magazine retains about 85% of the blue finish with traces of plum patina. Nearly all of the blue finish is present on the bolt. The loading gate has a blue-gray patina. The case colors on the forearm tip and crescent buttplate have aged to a mottled gray. The receiver has 50% of the casehardened finish with strong colors on the sides and silvering on the edges and bottom. The hammer and sides of the lever have strong case colors; the bottom of the lever has silvered and shows traces of age discoloration. The highly figured, fancy grade walnut stock and forearm remain in very good condition and retain 85% of the piano finish. The right side of the forearm has a professionally repaired crack that starts at the forearm cap and runs above and parallel to the checkered panel along with limited light scattered handling marks on the stock and forearm. This is a fine example of an exceptionally rare Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle with extra-heavy, 28-inch barrel, factory single set trigger and unique, period, custom rear sight.
