French Musical Automaton "Spanish Dancer with Tambourine" by Lambert 6500/8500

21" (53 cm.) Standing upon patterned velvet covered base is a bisque-head lady with slender portrait like face, blue eyes, thick dark eyeliner, painted lashes, feathered ...morebrows, aquiline nose with accented nostrils, closed mouth with shaded lips, pierced ears, dark brunette mohair wig over cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, paper mache hands. The lady is wearing elaborate Spanish festival dress of gold silk with black lace overskirt, soutache braid, red silk bows and gold jewelry. When wound, music plays and she sways her body (from the waist) back and forth, turns her head, and alternately lifts her left hand, and then her right hand which she twists back and forth at her wrist, thus shaking the tambourine which she holds. Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well. Marks: L.B. (key). Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1890, a luxury example of their automaton named "Espagnole" in the firm's catalog, with portrait face and exceptional costume.

Seated upon a wooden stool upon a velvet-covered wooden platform is a paper-mache-headed clown having blue glass eyes, painted white clown complexion with pa...moreinted decorations, red-tipped nose, open mouth with movable tongue, bi-color fleecy mohair wig, carton torso, hinged carton legs, bisque forearms, wearing original silk costume and cap, and holding a wooden mandolin. When wound, his head turns and nods realistically, he lifts the mandolin with his left hand and strums with his right; periodically he taps his right foot to the music, and then his left foot, then bends forward at the waist, and saucily sticks out his tongue; all the while two tunes play. Condition: generally excellent, two fingers professionally restored on left hand; motions and music function well. Marks: L.B. Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1890, this being a deluxe commissioned variation of a similar automaton with less movements "Clown as La Guitare" featured in Lambert's catalog. Value Points: the delightfully amusing seven movement clown is all original, his musical skills enlivened by sticking out tongue in a smart-alecky way and enhanced by fine quality of music.

Rare American Blue Enamel Ware and Nickel Stove "Quick Meal" 1200/1500

The blue enamel ware framed stove has cast iron stove top with six burners and lifter, steel back with nickel edging on brackets and shelf, two nickel-plated shelves that...more hinge from the back wall, chimney with workable flue, nickel-plated oven door embossed "Quick Meal" with hinged opening and interior racks, nickel-plated door for coal or wood, door for ashes with tinplate ash bin, movable grate. There is a wide drying bar at the front, and a small drying bar that forms the oven handle. Condition: near mint state of preservation. Comments: the Quick Meal Toy Stove was only available through dealers of people-sized Quick Meal Stoves, and the manufacturer recommended placing the small stove in the store window along with a little girl baking biscuits "and you will be surprised at the crowds it draws". American, circa 1910, Quick Meal Stove Co. (originally the Ringen Stove Co of St. Louis, which became a division of the American Stove Co. in 1894). In 1909 the stove sold for $5.50.

The clown stands behind a large circus drum which rests on a wooden form and is decorated with circus-themed decoupage. When pulled along, music plays and the clown turns his head from side to side, and clangs the drum with the stick and cymbal that he holds. Condition: generally excellent.
