Remington Arms Company Model 1894 DE-Grade Boxlock Double Ejectorgun

Lot # 351 (Sale Order: 351 of 703)

serial #100154, 12ga., 30" barrels both choked about modified with bright bores showing remnants of some very light pinprick pitting and a couple minor dings and two small professionally raised dents. The barrels show a lovely candy stripe damascus pattern (Remington's "Legia" pattern) their entire length and the rib is equipped with dual factory ivory beads. The frame is beautifully engraved with Remington's D-grade fine tight scroll with hunting dog vignettes left and right. The frame is a pleasing deep tarnished pewter with some very sparse toning to dark gray on the edges of the fences and some very light oxidation staining on the left side, lower edge of the frame. The triggerguard bow has toned more to a gun metal gray and shows engraved game birds. The checkered capped pistolgrip English walnut buttstock and splinter style forend rate excellent as very nicely refinished with freshened checkering. The forend appears to be an original Remington forend that was fitted to this gun and shows a fancy checkering pattern with uncut lines through the checkering. This is virtually undetectable except that the shotgun is illustrated in Semmer's Remington Double Shotguns on pages 158 & 159 with a different forend. The barrels lock up solidly and the ejectors are positive. Only the very tiniest sliver of light can be detected between the breech faces and the standing breech. The engraving on these early high-grade Remington's is just stunning. A nice example of a higher grade 1894 ejectorgun. (18468-1) {ANTIQUE}

Winchester Model 12 Pigeon Grade Slide Action Shotgun

Lot # 352 (Sale Order: 352 of 703)

serial #1965335, 12 ga., 30" ventilated rib barrel choked full with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces retain about 97-98% original blue, the loss is due to some very light operational wear, light muzzle wear and some even fading. The engine turning on carrier is brilliant, the bolt engine turning showing operational wear on its right side. The checkered walnut deluxe grade buttstock and semi-beavertail extended forend rate very good plus to near excellent, showing some stunning grain finish and only light handling marks here and there, the buttstock perhaps with a bit of added finish but certainly otherwise unmolested. There is some very light slot damage on the screw retaining the blued pistolgrip cap and there are the remnants of a silver oval sticker along the toeline. The length of pull to the grooved Winchester white line recoil pad is 14 1/4" and the arm features drops of 1 1/4 and 2", appearing very much to have been made for the trap fields. A very nice example overall. (38493-4) {C&R}

W W Greener DH35 Boxlock Double Ejectorgun

Lot # 353 (Sale Order: 353 of 703)

serial #37801, 12 ga. (2 1/2"), 30" barrels choked improved cylinder and skeet with bright about excellent bores which show some sparsely scattered light oxidation or perhaps light pinprick pitting. The barrels retain perhaps 95% original blue, the loss is due primarily to even fading with a few very light handling marks here and there from the years, the concave rib neatly matted and maker marked. The scalloped frame is primarily a mottled gray case-hardened patina with some traces of colors in the protected areas. The frame shows nice quality tight scroll and a geometric borderline engraving with "WW Greener" in riband on left and right flats; the long tang triggerguard features light engraving on its extension and the bow of the guard. The straight grip English walnut buttstock and splinter style forend rate very good plus to near excellent with remnants of some light dings and handling marks from the years, the butt showing a light cleaning many years ago. The end of the Greener crossbolt has been polished bright or perhaps the bolt is a newer replacement of quality-make. The arm locks up well and seems to function properly mechanically, the Greener side safety is automatic and resets each time the lever is actuated. The length of pull to the checkered hard rubber buttplate is 14 3/8" with the drops of 1 3/8" and 2". A handsome working-grade Greener that swings very nicely with its long tubes. (38542-3) {C&R}

Rare Custom A. E. Berdon Colt Match Target Woodsman Pistol

Lot # 356 (Sale Order: 356 of 703)

serial #109031-S, .22 LR, 5 7/8" custom Berdon barrel with an excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this second model Match Target retain about 95% original and custom blue finishes, the loss high edge and contact point wear, the backstrap fading to gray. The checkered rosewood grips rate excellent and feature an extremely comfortable left-side thumbrest. The brainchild of noted Florida gunsmith Albert Berdon in the post-war era, this arm features partial smooth and partial rifled bores. Berdon's reasoning was sound: shooting a soft lead projectile in a smooth-bored section, of true barrel diameter, it would expand to fill the bore, then after passing through an expansion chamber which acted as a recoil compensator, the projectile entered the rifled section of the bore, being stabilized and engraved with the rifling. Purportedly, only three such pistols were ever built, two pistols, one each with a compensator nearer the muzzle and one closer to the breech were made. Berdon found that the arm with the muzzle-end compensator was considerably more accurate, however debris vented through the compensator was left on the front sight. The story goes that he then moved this expansion chamber rearward just a bit more, and then had THAT example tested by U.S. Marine Corps officer Capt. Thurman E. Barrier. Capt. Barrier used that pistol, also fitted with a barrel weight, to win the 1949 .22-caliber aggregate championship at the National Matches. The expansion port/compensator on this example is in the precise position as that on Cpt. Barriers arm, then making this example the FOURTH such known pistol. The trigger has been neatly widened and grooved, no doubt by Mr. Berdon himself, and the arm also features Berdon's patented trigger overtravel stop screw in the front of the trigger guard. This is a very very rare arm and must be extremely accurate, let us hope its new owner will give it some range time. (38449-17){C&R}

Custom Colt Woodsman Target Model Pistol

Lot # 357 (Sale Order: 357 of 703)

serial #112331, .22LR, 6 1/2" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this minty little target model retain about 98-99% original blue. The checkered walnut Roper grips rate excellent. The arm has been nicely fitted with a custom contoured barrel weight which stabilizes the gun very nicely. Other custom modifications include a Berdon-style over-travel stop screw neatly installed in the front of the triggerguard and there has been a magazine release feature nicely added on the right side of the pistol. The rear nub of the follower has been built up slightly to contact the lower front face of the slide when the magazine is empty. The slide release then actuates upon the magazine button on the right side of the mag, lowering the follower and allowing the slide to come forward; the work is very nicely done. Included with the gun is an original purple-toned hinge-top box which is un-numbered. The box is about very good with a detached front lid flap, which is included, and the end label lid flap is missing (there is no end label at all). The corners are scuffed and there is a bit of loss to the top of the lid. Really a very nicely modified Woodsman in a very fine state of condition. (38449-18){C&R}

This little double is very well balanced and features ejectors and a single non-selective trigger. The action features geometric border engraving with light scroll on fences and "JOSEPH LANG AND SON" on either side. The barrels are engraved with the 102 New Bond Street address and retain 98% professional re-blacked finish. The action retains a pleasing mix of smooth gray brown patina and faded original case hardening and the floorplate retains 97% lovely blue finish. The checkered straight grip buttstock and splinter forend are of beautifully figured English walnut and rate excellent plus having been very nicely refinished with the checkering very neatly sharpened. The side panels are checkered and show subtle round darker areas which may be a concealed bolster from the maker or may be an old repair which is now nicely camouflaged; there is no evidence of any crack or other damage however. The shotgun points like a dream with a 14 1/4" length of pull over leather covered recoil pad and with drops of 1 1/2" and 1 7/8". Shotgun comes in a nice period and possibly original oak and leather case with brass reinforced corners and old gold embossed leather makers label. The lid of the case is embossed with the original owner's name "JACK EWING / BALTIMORE / MD; / U.S.A." and shows an old shipping label. Shotgun is tight and on face. A nice small bore London double gun that is ready for the field. (18508-1) {C&R}

Ithaca Perazzi Mirage Over Under Shotgun with Sub-Gauge Tube Set

Lot # 364 (Sale Order: 364 of 703)

Description Update (11/7/17): 1" crack behind upper tang

serial #48599, 12 ga., with 20 ga., 28 ga. and 410 bore matched tube sets. 27 1/2" ventilated rib barrels, ported, with otherwise bright excellent bores, the top barrel showing a 2" long moderately deep scar within the tube near the muzzle, which under magnification appears as though something was driven or hammered from that portion of the barrel. The tube sets all rate bright excellent. The barrels retain about 95% original blue, the loss due primarily just to even fading and light muzzle wear. The frame retains about 98% original color case-hardening, toning slightly on the belly of the frame to a silvery-gray mottled case-hardened patina. The checkered European walnut buttstock and field style forend with schnabel tip rate very good plus to near excellent, the comb showing evidence of having been relieved many years ago and refinished-over, the work very well done. The length of pull to the 1/2" grooved pad is 14". The arm comes with a spare Perazzi lock, the aforementioned six sub-gauge tubes, hammer and knocker. The 12 gauge barrels appear completely un-choked, the 410 bore barrels appear wide-open, the 28 ga. barrels a tight modified and the 20 ga. barrels an open modified. All these ride in a nice hard black plastic carry case. The gun locks up tightly and seems to function well mechanically. Overall a very nice package, very versatile, for the competition shooter. Unique Colt Large Frame Lightning Slide Action Rifle

Lot # 366 (Sale Order: 366 of 703)

serial #6351, 45-85 WCF, 28" part octagon part round barrel (the only such example produced by Colt) with an about good bore which shows strong rifling but with frosting and pitting its full length. The metal surfaces of barrel and magazine tube are a mix of dull gray and plum brown patina with scattered oxidation staining and scattered light pits here and there, with the expected dings and handling marks as well. The magazine tube does show a bit more pitting, especially along its bottom edge with one spot that could be characterized as moderate. The receiver is more of a silvery case-hardened patina showing pinprick pitting on the dust cover, top radius of receiver and right flat, the left flat being smoother and with the Rampant Colt still evident. The smooth walnut buttstock rates about very good showing an old cleaning many years ago, with chips missing at the sharp edges of the upper tang. There are the remnants of three moderate dents on the right side of the combline and repaired chip at the toe. The checkered grip panels rate about very good as well with each showing a small crack, the right side missing a 1" chip at its lower edge. The gun does function mechanically although somewhat sluggishly. The front sight blade is a modified Lyman hunting style, the rear a step adjustable semi-buckhorn which appears correct. According to Wilson-Sutherland in their monumental work: "one rifle was made with part-round, part-octagon barrel", this gentleman, would be that gun. A salty but honest large frame Lightning overall, perfect to fill that hole in your antique arms or Colt collection, and of the one and only with a factory part round part octagon barrel. Lot # 367 (Sale Order: 367 of 703)

serial #106, 12 ga., 28" barrel choked modified with a fair-good bore which shows pitting its full-length. The barrel shows some nice contrasting star pattern with overall light speckled oxidation, the magazine tube and nosecap a soft brown and pewter patina. The receiver and slide handle feature nice factory milling along the right side which exposes the internal working components of the action. Receiver, slide and bolt retain roughly 85-90% original nickel plate, the bottom plate has toned to a pewter patina. The straight grip walnut buttstock rates about very good as refinished, the metal is now proud as-is the original checkered hard rubber Burgess Gun Co. buttplate around its periphery, the toe with a small chip. The forend rates good to very good showing an old light cleaning with the checkering worn to flat-top. The checkered gutta-percha grasping panel at the rear of the triggerguard rates about good showing a good deal of wear and some minor cracking to the rear of the guard, the pieces remain intact however, the checkering now worn very nearly smooth. The action functions as-designed and the work is clearly factory done, very professionally and cleanly. Lovely Bullard Small Frame Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 368 (Sale Order: 368 of 703)

serial #1785, 38-45 Bullard, 26" round barrel with a bright very good plus bore which shows very sparsely scattered very light oxidation or perhaps light pinprick pits, also with a ring in the bore 1/2" from the muzzle. The barrel and magazine tube retaining about 95% dark gray-blue fading original blue showing scattered sparse rub areas of pewter, a few spots of light oxidation or light pitting and some minor handling marks. The barrel shows tool marks left and right in the area beneath the rear sight. The receiver is similar, a darker gray-brown patina which is very pleasing and smooth and generally free of oxidation with perhaps a couple light pits and some minor handling marks. The lever is pleasing as well and matches the patina of the receiver very well. The smooth walnut buttstock rates about very good with the expected overall light dings and handling marks from the years, but with much original varnish which is crackling nicely with age, also showing a few minor cracks here and there at tang and left side at receiver. The forearm is similar showing perhaps a bit more wear with more handling marks and a 1/2" crack along its lower left edge. The original checkered hard rubber "Bullard Rept'g Arms Co." turkey buttplate rates very good with light wear at heel and toe. The rifle retains its original silver blade front sight and semi-buckhorn step-elevator rear. An interesting arm, the hammer locks the locking block very much like a Remington rolling block hammer; it must be cocked fully to the rear for the action to be operated, when done the arm operates as-designed. Sadly there is no dust cover present but this is a very nice Bullard rifle overall. (38315-146LTS329) {ANTIQUE} [Lewis T Steadman Collection]

serial #2121, 44-40 WCF, 25 1/2" octagon barrel with a good to perhaps very good bore which shows strong rifling but with pitting its full length. The barrel and magazine tube are primarily a smooth plum brown faded original blue with toning to pewter gray gunmetal on the sharp edges and contact points, the magazine tube a bit more gray; the nosecap is a mottled smoky case-hardened patina. The frame is a warm plum brown on its right flat and more of a pewter gray on its left with casting striations and perhaps a scattered pinprick pit here or there. The Rampant Colt is present albeit light. The lever is similar being more of a dark and light gray patina, there is generous trace blue at the root of the trigger. Fine Identified Colt 1851 Navy Model Percussion Revolver

Lot # 375 (Sale Order: 375 of 703)

serial #103618 all matching including wedge, .36 caliber, 7 1/2" barrel with an excellent bore. The backstrap of this revolver is beautifully period engraved "Melzar Dunbar, Jr. / From his Friends, May 1st 1861". The condition of the revolver is quite nice with the barrel and cylinder retaining about 20% original blue finish with the balance flaked to a smooth brown patina. The cylinder scene is about 90% visible with only real loss due to an area of light surface oxidation. The frame retains perhaps 50% original color case-hardened finish which has darkened slightly and is blending with a smooth brown patina. The one piece walnut grip rates excellent with 95% original finish remaining and with a few impact marks in butt. The brass gripstraps retain 95% original silverplated finish which has taken on a pleasing tarnish. Melzar Dunbar, Jr. was a 31 year old clerk from Boston when he was commissioned into Co. B, 11th Massachusetts Infantry as a 1st Lieutenant. Dunbar injured his back and was discharged on September 7th, 1861. He later re-enlisted and was commissioned a Captain in the 47th Massachusetts Infantry on October 9, 1862, his commission was cancelled on November 24th of the same year. This is a fine Colt Navy revolver with a beautifully executed backstrap inscription. (18524-4) {ANTIQUE}
