Remington-Beals Navy Model Percussion Revolver

Lot # 458 (Sale Order: 458 of 703)

serial #14433, .36 cal, 7 1/2" octagon barrel with a bright very good bore showing strong rifling and some light oxidation and frosting throughout. The metal surfaces of this revolver have been cleaned in-the-white and show some freckling, minor oxidation staining and tiny pinprick pitting throughout. Many of the small inspector marks are still very clear, the second line of the barrel marking is largely faded and the first line remains very clear. The hammer spur has been lightly dressed and no checkering remains. The original silver cone front sight is intact and the brass triggerguard has also been lightly cleaned and is starting to take on an ochre patina. The sides of the trigger still show some faint hints of original fire temper blue with the remainder mostly toned to gunmetal. The smooth walnut grips are un-numbered but fit the frame very well perhaps having been lightly cleaned long ago. They remain in good overall condition with worn finish, some scattered dings, scratches, dents, four notches chipped out of the base of the left panel, a prominent 1 1/2" scratch on the right grip and twelve further small notches scratched into the top of the right panel. There is no evidence of an inspector cartouche on the grip panels but this example falls into the serial range of the U.S. Army purchase and the sub-inspector marks are present on many of the parts including an "S" on the barrel, frame and cylinder and a "P" on the frame. This revolver still functions very well with a robust hammer, strong timing and lockup just a little loose. A solid overall example of a scarce martially-marked Remington-Beals Navy. (138315-242LS6-37) {ANTIQUE} [Lewis T. Steadman Collection]

Rare Colt Model 1860 Army Thuer Conversion Revolver

Lot # 460 (Sale Order: 460 of 703)

serial #172414, 44 CF, 8" barrel with an about very good bore showing strong rifling and some light oxidation and pinprick pitting throughout. The metal surfaces of this revolver retain about 90% older reapplied blue toning to grayish brown throughout along with some thinning to silver, operational and high edge wear, old dings and pinprick pitting under the newer finish. The barrel markings are very faint and the cylinder scene is almost gone entirely. The end of the wedge spring has broken, one cylinder stop has an old failing repair with two tiny holes through the cylinder and the Thuer conversion plate shows a couple of rather amateur repairs. The brass triggerguard has been lightly cleaned to goldenrod with some small dings and a few traces of silver plate. The one-piece smooth walnut grip is un-numbered and stamped with an "AA" on the interior. It remains in about very good condition as lightly cleaned with a few small dings, handling marks, small chips and is slightly shy of the frame. The Thuer conversion is correctly marked "PAT.SEP. / 15.1868" with the first half worn away and the ejector setting "E" mark is also still present. The backstrap, triggerguard, barrel and frame are all matching, the wedge is numbered 2414, the converted cylinder is 727 and both it and the Thuer unit are assembly-numbered alike. This revolver also includes its original percussion cylinder that shows a similar amount of older reapplied blue toning to brownish gray. The hammer holds on both half and full cock and timing is a little off on a few chambers. Also included is an iron "COLTS PATENT" two-cavity bullet mould that remains in about good overall condition, a mismatched tin of percussion caps, an assortment of lead balls and bullets, a couple of articles regarding the Thuer conversion and a modern red velvet-lined presentation case. Overall a good representative example of a rarely seen original Thuer patent conversion. (138502-32) {ANTIQUE}

The blade remains bright with gold washed etched panels on both sides. The obverse panel is etched in gothic letters "Edwin D. Metcalfe" and the reverse is etched "Springfield Commandery". The hilt features a double guard, pierced counterguards, knight head pommel with chain knuckle bow and an etched bone handle with intertwined letters on one side and a Templar knight on the other side. The hilt retains much silver plate with scattered light tarnish and the handle has a small chip at the pommel on the reverse side. The metal scabbard is nickel plated with silver plated fancy fittings having areas of light tarnish and is etched with fraternal panoplies on the lower part of the scabbard and "Edwin D. Metcalf" between the hangers and an identical sword is pictured on page 150 of "The American Fraternal Sword". Col. Metcalf enlisted for service Aug. 27 1861 as a major and on Oct. 9, 1861 commissioned in the Rhode Island 3rd. Heavy Artillery and commanded battalions at North Edisto and James Island S.C. and the battle of Olustee. Col. Metcalf resigned commission on Feb. 5, 1864 and passed away some time in 1915. Included with the swords are numerous letters to and from Metcalf, officers casualty sheets and muster rolls. A lovely pair of swords presented to a Civil War Colonel with a lot of New England history. (58431-12)

serial #10830, 32 rf, 3 1/2" octagon barrel with a bright very good bore that shows just a small area of light oxidation. This revolver shows floral scroll engraving that looks to be of the period and was likely retailer applied. Metal surfaces of the revolver retain about 90% of a later applied but old, nice quality blue finish. The grips are full checkered ivories and they rate very good plus with just a couple tiny chips from the bottom edge. The revolver comes in a lovely rosewood veneered case with German silver bound lid. The interior of the case is French fitted with recess for the revolver and a brass English style wiping rod with two covered compartments with lids nicely covered with gold embossed leather. One compartment holds the key to the case and the other is divided with one section open and the other with an 8 shell cartridge block. The interior of the lid is gold embossed "B.
