U.S. Model 1860 Staff & Field Officer's Sword by Ames with Vermont National Guard Markings

29" blade is maker marked "AMES MFG. / CO / CHICOPEE / MASS". This sword features an etched blade which shows scroll, "U.S.", stands of arms and federal eagle with riband that reads "E. PLURIBUS UNUM". The blade is bright and the etch is crisp. The brass hilt is gold washed and rates excellent with a silverplated grip and is adorned with a sword knot. The scabbard is nickel plated with fancy pierced and gold washed brass fittings. The condition of the scabbard is also excellent. The scabbard is engraved between top two fittings on one side "LEVI G. KINGSLEY / QUARTER-MASTER GENERAL / OF THE STATE OF VERMONT FROM / 1874 TO 1882" and on opposite side "BRIGADE COMMANDER / OF THE NATIONAL GUARD / OF THE STATE OF VERMONT FROM / 1882 TO 1886". Levi Kingsley was a veteran of the Civil War first serving Co. K of the 1st Vermont infantry from April until August of 1861, then again as a Major in Field and Staff of the 12th Vermont Infantry from October of 1862 until July of 1863. Kingsley was a native of Rutland, Vermont where he served as the second Mayor of the city and also ran a hardware and furniture store in Rutland until 1905. Included with the sword is a folder of research documents including muster rolls and pension applications and a copy of his obituary that appeared in the New York Times. This is a fabulous sword with neat Vermont history. (16122-27)
