Starr Percussion Civil War Carbine with Unit Markings

Lot # 532 (Sale Order: 532 of 703)

serial #13501, .54 cal, 21" barrel with an about very good bore showing scattered light pitting throughout along with some darkness and oxidation in the grooves. The metal surfaces of this carbine have worn to gunmetal overall, with scattered light freckling and oxidation staining, and some pinprick pitting and staining around the nipple and along the lever. The right side lever screw on the frame also shows some moderate slot damage. The buttplate and barrel band are steel instead of brass and may be from the later cartridge carbines. The smooth walnut forend and stock remain in about very good overall condition with the majority of a dark varnish remaining and scattered light dings, chips, handling marks, and a few small drying cracks. There is a very small hairline crack at the upper tang and two 1 1/4" cracks on either side of the toe, which shows some separation from the buttplate. The action and lock of this carbine remain very strong and functional, the saddle ring is present, and the barrel is matching with the rest of the gun. This example is marked above the chamber "1/ARK/D". Springfield Research does not have this particularly gun listed, but many of the serial numbers around this example were issued to the 1st Arkansas Volunteer Cavalry, so this carbine likely saw service with Company D of that regiment. Overall, a very solid example. (138415-6) {ANTIQUE}

serial #263308, 12 ga., 34" ventilated rib barrel choked full with a bright about excellent bore which shows some very sparsely scattered very light pinprick pitting and a professionally raised dent about one third of the way down its length (from the muzzle), the chamber showing some light oxidation remnants. German WW1 Prussian Oberjager Hirschfanger Dagger

Lot # 536 (Sale Order: 536 of 703)

The dagger measures 23 1/4" long with an 18" blade that is not maker marked but is etched with Bavarian style game scenes on both sides. The blade is mostly bright with some light gray patina scattered about and a few light nicks along the unsharpened edge. The grip is solid brass with an eagle head pommel and simple trunnion style guard. The brass has a mild ochre patina with light handling marks throughout. One side of the grip bears a small medallion with an Imperial eagle in center bordered with the Latin phrase "SUUM CUIQUE" meaning "To Each His Own" or "May All Get Their Due". The medallion is missing much of the enamel background but the inscription is still visible. The logo and inscription belonged to the Order Of the Black Eagle, the Kingdom of Prussia's highest order of chivalry which was founded in 1701. The logo was later continued with Germany's Feljager military police and the Black Eagle Lodge fraternal order. The included black leather body scabbard features a brass throat and chape and has an acorn styled lug. The leather has some minor flaking and crazing but remains intact and the brass a light tarnish. Also included is a leather frog that has more moderate crazing and flaking. A really excellent example of these German "Hirschfanger" hunting daggers. (47884-20D) [Craig Brown Collection]
