Lot # 701 (Sale Order: 701 of 703)
Low Estimate: 800High Estimate: 1,200
Description Update (11/7/17): Barrel dated 1862
.58 cal., 40" smoothbore barrel with an excellent bore. The barrel retains 90-95% added plum-brown finish with an area of light oxidation and fading behind the middle barrel band and at the muzzle. The lock, triggerguard, barrel bands and buttplate have toned to pale gray and brown with some scattered fine oxidation. The top of the barrel is dated "1863", the left diagonal flat shows proper eagle head and VP firing proofs and the left barrel flat is marked "C STEEL". The lockplate is properly marked "U.S. / COLT'S PT F.A. MFg Co / HARTFORD Ct" in front of hammer, is dated 1862 at the rear and there is a Federal Eagle on the bolster. The walnut stock rates very good overall with light handling marks and slightly rounded edges, faint traces of a left-side cartouche and "II 16" stamped in the left stock flat and what appears to be an added light finish. Musket is equipped with a two leaf rear sight, the mechanism remains crisp and what appears to bean original tulip tipped ramrod is present. A good to very good refinished Colt Special musket.
