Smith & Wesson 357 Registered Magnum Double Action Revolver

Lot # 1088 (Sale Order: 89 of 901)

serial #45758 (Reg. No. 16), .357 Magnum, 6" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel, cylinder and crane retain about 97% original blue, the loss due to some muzzle wear, a light rotational ring and some scattered light scratches. The frame retains a similar amount of later blue, perhaps closer to 95%. Somehow the triggerguard was cracked or broken and a welded repair was neatly effected at its front edge near the cylinder stop spring screw; this screw now appears to be a replacement. "Made in USA" is only partially visible and there are a couple of small welding pits present but overall the repair was rather well done, this of course necessitated bluing of the frame, but only a portion of it was actually polished. The trigger retains excellent color case-hardening with light fading, the hammer has had the sides of the spur neatly welded up, dressed, and checkered to form a very nicely-done wide spur hammer, now retaining 95% plus later color case-hardening. The checkered walnut pre-magna style grips rate very good plus to near excellent showing only some minor handling marks or light dings, they are stamp-numbered to a different gun. The front sight blade has been changed to a Kings reflector sight with a red bead, the rear is a black square notch. The gun times well and locks up properly and seems to function well mechanically. Overall a very good "example" piece for the budding Smith & Wesson or Registered Magnum collector that won't break the bank. (38411-13) {C&R}

Engraved Smith & Wesson Model 60 Chiefs Special Revolver

Lot # 1091 (Sale Order: 92 of 901)

serial #R52721, 38 Special, 1 7/8" pinned barrel with an excellent bore. This gun has been beautifully engraved by an unidentified artisan with tight scroll motif shaded by tightly spaced punch-dots that appear more half-moon than whole. The sideplate has a two-headed Masonic eagle with a triangle and the number "32" for about 90% coverage. The stainless steel surfaces rate about excellent and the service trigger and hammer retain full hard chrome finish. The smooth factory hardwood grips with silver S&W medallions rate excellent. The left side of the grip frame has a tiny "[Masonic square and compass symbol] / JLS / 80" stamped near the butt. Most likely this is the engravers signature but that artisan has not been positively identified. This Masonic tribute includes a factory box that is correctly end-labeled and numbered to the gun and manual. A beautiful revolver for the collector or dedicated Mason. (88422-11) {MODERN}

Smith & Wesson 1955 .45 Target Model Hand Ejector Revolver

Lot # 1098 (Sale Order: 99 of 901)

serial #S166111, 45 ACP / AR, 6 1/2" heavy barrel with an excellent bore. This five-screw revolver features a unique "W" shaped combination main and rebound spring. The metal surfaces retain about 99% factory blue with a faint turn ring on the cylinder and few light scratches. The .500" target hammer and trigger retains beautiful case-hardened colors. The revolver is equipped with diamond checkered walnut "coke bottle" factory grips with silver S&W medallions that rate near excellent with a few small dings on the right panel but they are not numbered to this gun. The revolver features a Patridge front sight, black blade micro adjustable rear sight and all appropriate parts are correctly numbered to the gun. Research has not provided much insight on this unique mainspring but The Standard Catalogue of Smith & Wesson, 3rd edition by Supica and Nahas mentions on page 166 under "Variations" that these guns are "Sometimes found with a "W" or "U" shaped mainspring" but does not elaborate further. This mainspring is a two legged "W" shaped flat spring that attaches to the hammer stirrup as the original spring did and the second leg is used to power the rebound slide. Several original parts were removed or altered for the use of this spring but it appears the revolver can be restored to the normal springs by replacing the mainspring, adding a rebound slide, rebound slide spring and installing a new strain screw. The five-screw model was only made for about one year before the upper sideplate screw was deleted. The gun includes a pair of half-moon clips. A beautiful condition Hand Ejector with an interesting period modification. (88511-6) {C&R}

Colt Single Action Army Revolver

Lot # 1099 (Sale Order: 100 of 901)

serial #273274, 38-40 W.C.F., 4 3/4" barrel with a frosted bore. All the metal surfaces of this 1906-made revolver are brown with pewter overtones along with minor pitting, stains from oxidation and handling marks. The checkered hard rubber grips rate about good with moderate to heavy wear, the diamond points are worn smooth and the Rampant Colt in an oval exhibits moderate wear also. Several owners over the years have scratched initials on the inside of the grips and the original scratch serial number is no longer visible but all numbers match on the appropriate parts. Timing and lock up are excellent. This salty old "thumb-buster" has seen some honest use over the years. (86520-2476) {C&R} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]
