Imported Civil War Cavalry Saber by Walscheib

Lot # 1800 (Sale Order: 801 of 901)

Description Update (11/7/17): Scabbard appears to be worn gunmetal, not nickel

32 1/2" single stopped fuller blade. Similar to an English pattern 1822 light cavalry sword none of their products were imported to England under contract and were only in business long enough to produce sabers during the Civil War. There is no documentation to show that any of their sabers were imported to the Confederacy or solely to the Union. The blade remains bright overall with scattered fine staining, pinprick pitting and tiny nicks along the main edge. The blade is marked "W. WALSCHEID / SOLINGEN" on the reverse ricasso and has "PROVED" stamped in circular emblem on the obverse ricasso. The iron hilt has a three branch guard ending with a circular quillon, the knucklebow is slotted for a sword knot and the pommel and backstrap are a one-piece design. The grip is covered in shagreen and wrapped in twisted brass wire. The metal surfaces have toned to a pale gray with scattered fine oxidation becoming more modest on the guard where the buffer washer has curled around the blade. The shagreen shows light wear but remains intact as does the wire wrapping. The steel scabbard is toning to an oxidized brown patina still retaining about 60% fading nickel plate and a couple small chips along the edge of the drag. A simple yet neat looking Civil War import saber. (58525-25)

Brass-Hilted American Infantry Hanger

Lot # 1801 (Sale Order: 802 of 901)

28" slightly curved blade with single narrow deep fuller along the top edge. The blade has a mottled brown and gray patina with scattered fine oxidation, pitting and tiny nicks along the main and rear edge, the obverse side of the blade having a few patches of more moderate pitting and oxidation. They are marked "1806" between two rudimentary figures and "IPD" in square below the second figure, the letters are faded on the reverse side with only the "D" still visible. The hilt has a brass reverse P-shaped guard ending in a round quillon and a one-piece birdshead pommel with backstrap and a leather covered grip wrapped in braided brass wire. The brass has a nice ochre patina with some light tarnish and tiny impact marks. The leather shows modest wear and ingrained dirt staining and the brass wire shows some light dents but remains intact. There is no scabbard present, a neat look early American saber. (58433-142) [Paul Weisberg Collection]

Case Replica V-42 First Special Service Force Knife Set

Lot # 1803 (Sale Order: 804 of 901)

This two knife set was produced by Case in the 90's to commemorate the original V-42 made in the 1940's for a group rough and tough hand-picked individuals who became the First Special Service Force, better known by the Nazis as the "Devil's Brigade". Both knives measure 12 1/2" overall with 7 1/4" double edge blades, leather handles and skull crusher pommels. The first knife is the 1992 version with a high polish gun-blue and broad polished stacked leather washer handle separated by thin bright nickel silver spacers. The 1998 version retains more of the original look of the knife, with a non-buffed leather handle and a gun-blued non-reflective (matte) blade. This version also has cork behind the guard, much like the WWII era V-42s. It was said that soldiers serving at that time made the tip slightly blunt so that it would not get stuck in bone after stabbing and also reduce wear on the leather sheath. The knives are housed in a hinged walnut presentation case with embossed Special Service Force logo on lid and a black baize interior with red, white and blue ribbons and inlaid facsimile red "Devil's Brigade" arrowhead patch. A first choice Certificate of Authenticity is also included. Overall, this is an awesome dagger set. Be it the original war-era production knife or the reproduction, the Case V-42 Stiletto is a "must-have" for any knife collector and would be the centerpiece of any knife collection. The sleek and darkened blade tells much about the deadly design of this knife. (58432-3,4)

Unmarked Belgian Double Action Pinfire Revolver

Lot # 1824 (Sale Order: 825 of 901)

7mm Pinfire, 4" octagon barrel with a very good bore showing strong rifling, some oxidation and frosting primarily at the breech. The metal surfaces of this Lefaucheux-style revolver retain about 65% original bright blue with some flaking to brown, high edge wear, small scratches, freckling and minor oxidation staining throughout. The triggerguard and gripstraps have mostly toned to dark gray and the trigger, hammer, ejector rod and base pin all show some oxidation staining and freckling. This revolver is embellished with some rather nice foliate motifs and scalloped borders. The black checkered fancy hard rubber grips feature wonderful foliate patterns and remain in near excellent condition with some minor discoloration and smoothing of some points. This revolver appears to be completely unmarked and it will require some mechanical attention as the hammer does not hold at half or full cock. In double action it functions quite well with strong timing and lockup. This little revolver is a rather elegant example. (138547-47) {ANTIQUE}
