Rare Late 1850s Daguerreotype of E. Remington II

Lot # 527 (Sale Order: 27 of 533)

Rare Late 1850s Daguerreotype of Eliphalet Remington II, (1793-1861), famous designer of the Remington rifle and founder of what is now known as Remington Arms. Born in ...moreSuffield, CT in 1793, Eliphalet was the Junior to his father of the same name and worked as a blacksmith at the family forge in Herkimer County, NY. His home at Kinne Corners is on the National Register of Historic Places. At age 23, he built a flintlock rifle using a lock purchased from a gunsmith and a barrel that he constructed himself. By 1840, with his three sons, he formed E. Remington & Sons, which he headed until his death in 1861. This particular daguerreotype was taken late in his life and at the end of the daguerreotype period. The image measures approx. 3''x4.25'' and is nicely framed in a gold-plated setting contained in a rose-embossed hinged case, the lid of which is inset with a pressed design maroon cotton velveteen material. The image is of excellent quality with some toning around the edges. Even in the last several years of his life, his expression is one of confidence, and the clear view of both his hands gives an interesting insight into the type of work he accomplished. Inside the case, behind the image in pencil cursive are the words ''Grandfather Remington''. Est.: $4,000-$6,000.

Spencer's Slide-Action Patent Model

Lot # 542 (Sale Order: 42 of 533)

Spencer's Slide-Action Patent Model, dated May 26, 1863. Hand-built by Christopher Spencer as his working patent model, with issued U.S. Patent No. 38702 tag for a repea...moreting firearm. The new invention operated by a simple push-pull slide handle on the receiver. This ingenious yet simple design extracts the empty cartridge case as the hammer is drawn to the rear. As the slide handle is pushed forward, the breechblock descends and presses against the rim of the chambered cartridge. At this point the shooter only had to cock the hammer and pull the trigger. Had Spencer continue to develop this design, this would have developed into a true pump-action repeater. This extremely rare working patent model is accompanied by the original government issued patent tag. This device is fabricated from dark stained walnut and sheet steel, with light patent inspector markings to metal components. Rare and handmade by the inventor. This exact device is pictured on page 55 of Roy Marcot's book, ''Spencer Repeating Firearms''. Condition is excellent with minor discoloration to metal parts with a minor loss to stock at toe. Est.: $2,500-$4,000. (Antique)
