Early Production Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action .45-70 Rifle

Lot # 1001 (Sale Order: 2 of 1026)

Early Production Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action .45-70 Rifle with British Proofs and Factory Letter

The included factory letter confirms the caliber, round barrel, plain trigger and special order shotgun buttplate. The rifle was received in the warehouse on January 22, 1887, and shipped on February 8, 1887. It has a casehardened frame. British proofs are stamped on the left side of the barrel, and a single British proof is stamped on top of the bolt at the rear and left side of the receiver at the front. Blade front sight (missing bead) and folding ladder rear sight on a barrel marked with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "45-70" at the breech. The upper tang is marked "-MODEL 1886-." The lower tang is marked with the two-line patent information and the serial number. Sling eyelets are mounted on the forend cap and buttstock. Mounted on a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a smooth steel shotgun buttplate. The Winchester Model 1886 was the first lever action designed by John M. Browning, and the popular Model 1892 was based on the same design but scaled down for smaller cartridges. The Model 1886 was very popular and could handle everything from .33 W.C.F. to large .50 caliber express cartridges making it one of the best firearms for big game hunting in its day. They also saw limited military use even into WWI when they were used with incendiary ammunition against German airships by the British Royal Flying Corps.

Class: Antique

Fine. The barrel and magazine tube retain 40% faded original case colors with a smooth brown patina on the balance. The bolt retains half of the original blue finish. The receiver retains 60% bright original case colors. The hammer and lever retain heavy amounts of original case colors. The buttplate is mostly a smooth dark patina with minor spotting. The wood is fine with a cosmetic repair near the upper tang and number of minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent.

New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic Pistol 41 Volcanic

Lot # 1006 (Sale Order: 7 of 1026)

Exceptional Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., Lever Action Navy Holster Pistol

This exceptional Lever Action Navy Holster Pistol with 8" barrel was manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., in New Haven, Connecticut, circa 1856-57. This pistol has an 8" octagon barrel with integral nine-shot magazine. The pistol has the distinctive Volcanic brass (gunmetal) frame and loading lever with finger hole. The barrel has a brass cone front sight. The fixed rear sight is located in a dovetail on the receiver. The barrel/magazine, rear sight, bolt and lever are blue and the hammer and trigger are color casehardened. The two-piece, walnut, flat-base grips have a high gloss piano finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEWHAVEN. CONN. FEB. 14. 1854" in three lines. The serial number, "1928" is stamped on the lower left side of the butt beneath the grips, on the inside of both grips and on the right side of the lever. All of the visible serial numbers match. "W D Bonce" is penciled on the inside of the right grip. The Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., marking indicates that this pistol was manufactured before the company was reorganized as the New Haven Arms Co., on May 1, 1857, by Oliver Winchester. The innovative Volcanic Navy pistols fired the .41 caliber Volcanic No. 2 cartridge. The combination of self-contained and primed cartridge, spring-loaded magazine and self-cocking, toggle link, action made Volcanic pistols and carbines some of the most advanced firearms available in 1857. The Volcanic firearms were hampered by the low-velocity, un-reliable "Rocket Ball" cartridge. Development of a more reliable, self-contained, metallic cartridge led to the introduction of the "Improved Volcanic" or Henry rifle which, in turn, served as the basis for the highly successful Winchester rifles and carbines. Although Volcanic firearms were not a commercial success, they introduced Oliver Winchester to firearms manufacturing and eventually led to the creation of the Winchester Repeating Arms Co.

Class: Antique

Excellent. This pistol is all original and retains 90% plus of the original blue finish. Wear is limited to some very minor finish loss on the left side of the barrel extension, on the edges of the flats and a few very insignificant handling marks. The Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., address is very sharp. The hammer retains 50% of the casehardened finish. The brass receiver is in excellent condition; the side plate joints are perfect. The receiver has an attractive mellow aged patina. The serial numbers on the receiver, lever and inside of the grips are extremely sharp. This is a really exceptional example of a scarce and historically significant Volcanic Lever Action Navy Holster Pistol. Volcanic firearms are rarely found in this exceptional condition. This outstanding Volcanic Lever Action Navy Holster pistol would be stand-out piece in the most advanced collection of Smith & Wesson or Winchester firearms.

Outstanding Winchester Model 1873 .22 Rimfire Takedown Lever Act

Lot # 1010 (Sale Order: 11 of 1026)

Outstanding Winchester Model 1873 .22 Rimfire Takedown Lever Action Rifle with 26-Inch Barrel and Special Order Sights

Winchester Model 1873 .22 Rimfire Rifle with rare takedown pin visible in forward frame and scarce 26-inch barrel. This rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes this Model 1873 as: "Type: Rifle, Caliber: 22, Barrel Type: Round" and "Trigger: Plain". The letter states this rifle was shipped from Winchester on August 23, 1884, and returned for repair on April 4, 1908 and April 29, 1919. Although the Cody letter indicates the rifle was originally shipped with a round barrel of unspecified length it has a scarce 26-inch full octagon barrel that was apparently fitted by Winchester in 1908 or 1919. The barrel has a Lyman folding combination front sight with colored bead and a sporting style flat top buckhorn rear sight. A Winchester folding peep sight with fifty minute graduation is mounted on the receiver tang. The sights were probably installed in 1908 or 1919. The rifle has the Second Style spring steel magazine tube. The barrel, magazine, forearm cap, dust cover and receiver have the Winchester charcoal blue finish and the hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate are casehardened. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut with the standard Winchester oil or varnish finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN, CONN, U.S.A./KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29. 1866, OCTOBER 16, 1860." with slanting block letters ahead of the rear sight. "22 CAL" is stamped on the top of the barrel behind the rear sight. The oval Winchester "W/P" proof mark is stamped on the top of the barrel behind the caliber marking and on the top of the receiver. The brass cartridge elevator is roll-stamped: "22 CAL/SHORT" in script letters. The serial number is roll-stamped on the lower tang behind the lever latch in script numerals.

Class: Antique

Exceptionally fine. The rifle retains 98% original blue and vivid casehardened finish with minimal handling wear. The stock and forearm are excellent with nearly all of the varnish. Wear is limited to a few very insignificant storage marks. The Model 1873 Rimfire Rifle was the first Winchester .22 rifle and the first repeating .22 rifle manufactured in the United States. This is a really outstanding example of a Model 1873 Rimfire Rifle with scarce 26-inch octagon barrel.

Exceptional Winchester Model 1876 Saddle Ring Carbine

Lot # 1011 (Sale Order: 12 of 1026)

Exceptional Winchester Model 1876 Saddle Ring Carbine

Winchester Model 1876 Saddle Ring Carbine manufactured in 1881 with special order shotgun buttplate and London proofmarks visible on the barrel and receiver. This carbine has the Second Model receiver with screw-fastened dust cover rail and dust cover with impressed oval thumbprint. The carbine has the distinctive full-length forearm, special forearm tip and staple-mounted saddle ring on the left side of the receiver. The carbine is accompanied by a detailed evaluation letter by author and Winchester expert George Madis. The Madis letter states that he inspected the carbine "both inside and outside" and that it is all original. The letter further notes that the special order shotgun buttplate is very rare on a Model 1876 carbine. The 22 inch round barrel is secured by the distinctive forearm cap and single barrel band. The barrel has a block mounted front sight with steel blade and transitional folding leaf rear sight with long leaf graduated to "10". The sight is mounted with the pointed end of the base facing the receiver to allow use of a standard rear sight on the shorter carbine barrel. The rear sight base covers part of the barrel marking. The leaf is mounted on the base with the markings and elevator facing the receiver and the hinge facing the muzzle. The Madis letter discusses this sight in detail and notes that a few long leaf rear sights with this mounting are found on Model 1876 carbines in this serial number range. A similar sight is pictured on page 226 of "THE WINCHESTER BOOK" by George Madis. The Madis letter concludes that due to the high degree of original finish, rare features and condition this rifle deserves "a prominent place in any collection or museum". The carbine has the Winchester charcoal blue finish on the forearm cap, barrel, lower barrel band, dust cover, receiver and shotgun buttplate. The loading gate has a niter blue finish. The hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened with muted case colors. This stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut with an oil finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN CT. /KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines. Part of the marking is covered by the rear sight base. London "Crown/V" and "Crown/CP" proof and inspection marks are stamped on the left side of the barrel below the rear sight and a "Crown/V" inspection mark is stamped on the upper left side of the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL. 1876." in fancy letters. The serial number is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the lever latch and the rear tang screw.

Class: Antique

Very fine. As the Madis letter states, this scarce carbine is all original and "has a high degree of original finish". At least 85% of the original blue and color casehardened finish is present on the carbine. Nearly all of the blue remains on the barrel and forearm tip. The sides of the barrel band have some minor finish wear. The barrel legend and British proofmarks are sharp. The blue on the dust cover is thin and 80% complete. The sides and bottom of the receiver and the left side plate have scattered handling marks and light - moderate finish wear. The right side plate retains nearly all of the original finish with a few handling marks. The special order shotgun buttplate has 70% of the high polish blue finish. The hammer, trigger and lever retain 75% of the muted original case colors. The stock and forearm are both in very fine overall condition and have 80% of the original oil finish with a few insignificant dents and scratches. Most of the finish wear and handling marks are concentrated on the left side of the stock; the handguard and right side of the stock show minimal wear. This is a very fine example of a rare British Winchester Model 1876 Saddle Ring Carbine with special order shotgun buttplate.

The engraving was executed by John Ulrich. The 28-inch, full octagon barrel has a gold-plated Beach folding combination front sight and a buckhorn sporting style rear sight with serrated edges. A Lyman "Combination Tang Peer Sight" with fine knurled post and hinged inner aperture disk is mounted on the receiver tang. The receiver has a single set-trigger. "CAL 40-60" is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. "40-60" is roll-stamped in script numerals across the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator. The serial number is stamped in tiny numerals across the lower tang between the lever latch and rear tang screw. This rifle is complete with a custom, French fitted, leather covered oak case. The case exterior has two-tone leather with brass latches and brass reinforcements on the corners. The case has a crimson baize lining and contains two keys in a small compartment with brass handle and empty 20 round carton of Winchester 40-60 cartridges with green picture label. This rifle was formerly part of the Felix Bedlan collection.

Class: Antique

Utterly magnificent. The barrel and magazine proudly exhibit 98% plus original blue finish showing only the most delicate handling marks. The barrel legend and caliber markings are clear. The dust cover, loading gate and trigger retain 98% plus of the fiery niter blue finish. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer and lever have 98% plus vivid case colors. Wear is limited to some thinning with traces of silver patina on the forward edge of the receiver and some small spots on age discoloration on the bottom of the lever. The exquisitely executed game heads and scroll engraving remain in perfect condition. The deluxe, highly figured walnut stock and forearm are both in excellent condition and retain 98% of the original finish. The checkering on the stock and forearm is extremely sharp. The modern leather covered wooden case is in very good condition. This is a truly magnificent example of a special order, deluxe, factory engraved Winchester Model 1876 rifle that would in fact be impossible to improve upon. The flawlessly executed scrollwork and highly detailed game heads combined with the vivid receiver case colors and overall near mint condition make this Winchester a true marvel, a instant one gun tour de force and collection defining piece. Exceptional Winchester First Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 1019 (Sale Order: 20 of 1026)

Exceptional Winchester First Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

The Winchester Museum letter states: "The Winchester Model 1873 serial number records number 11261 as a rifle, round barrel and plain trigger". The letter further states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on December 6, 1875. Also included with the rifle is a copy of a 1968 dated letter from dealer Sidney Stein to the buyer Paul Sorrell. The Stein letter describes this rifle in detail and concludes: "It is about the finest first model in original mint state of condition that I have seen during the past 20 years of chasing after Winchesters." This rifle has the First Model receiver with grooved dust cover guides and dust cover with recessed, oval, knurled "thumbprint." The lever latch has visible threads. The barrel has a standard sporting front sight with nickel silver blade and buckhorn sporting style rear sight with knurled edges. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. The crescent buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor. The butt trap contains a four-piece cleaning rod with brass tip. The top of the barrel has the two-line address/patent dates ahead of the rear sight. The upper receiver tang is marked "MODEL. 1873." in fancy letters. The serial number is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang. The barrel and cartridge elevator correctly lack the caliber markings found after 1879.

Class: Antique

Extremely fine. This rifle is all original and is very attractive. 90% original blue is present on the barrel and magazine. The barrel band has some edge wear and retains 80% original finish. There is some thinning on the side of the forearm cap but at least 80% of the blue finish remains. The receiver retains 80% plus original blue finish with thinning on the edges and on the top immediately ahead of the hammer slot. There is a 1 inch spot of finish wear on the lower right edge of the receiver ahead of the loading gate. The portions of the receiver that show handling wear have faded to an attractive plum brown patina. The sides of the receiver and side plates show traces of age spotting. The blue on the upper and lower tang is thin but mostly intact. The dust cover shows expected handling wear and retains 80% blue finish with traces of plum patina. The hammer, lever, trigger and buttplate retain at least 90% casehardened finish with muted case colors. The stock and forearm are both excellent and retain 90% plus original finish with minimal handling wear. This is a truly exceptional example of an early production First Model1873 rifle. Most of the early, standard grade Model 1873 rifles saw hard use. This rifle shows only very limited handling wear. It would be very difficult to find a better example of a First Model 1873 rifle.

New Haven Arms Co. Henry Rifle Rifle 44 Henry RF

Lot # 1024 (Sale Order: 25 of 1026)

Outstanding Civil War New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle

This exceptional original Henry lever action rifle was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. early in 1863. The rifle has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral 15-shot magazine and brass receiver and buttplate. The rifle has the first style receiver with rear sight dovetail manufactured until late 1863 and first style brass buttplate with rounded heel. The barrel has a square-back, nickel silver, front sight blade. The barrel-mounted, folding leaf rear sight is the third pattern with 900 yard center notch and no elevator bar screw stop-screw. The magazine has the second style, large diameter follower with beveled receiver follower slot. The hammer has border-less, hand-cut knurling on the spur. The butt trap contains a four-piece, jointed, steel cleaning rod with steel tip. The rifle lacks the sling swivel and screw-mounted loop which were extra cost items in 1863 and did not become standard features on Henry rifles until 1864. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the first style legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS. CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. This first style legend utilized serif (Roman) letters for the all the legend except the final "NEWHAVEN" which was stamped in block letters. The second style legend adopted in 1864 utilized all serif letters. The serial number, "2043", is stamped: (1) on the top barrel flat behind the rear sight dovetail, (2) on the lower left side of the receiver tang, (3) in the upper tang inlet of the stock, (4) on the shanks of all three tang screws, and (5) on the shank of the lower buttplate screw. The upper buttplate screw could not be removed and the serial numbers on that screw and the inside of the buttplate could not be examined. However, the upper buttplate screw is properly indexed and does not appear to have ever been removed from the rifle. Based on the overall condition of the rifle and the matching serial numbers on all of the other components, it is almost certain that the buttplate and upper buttplate screw are correctly serial numbered "2043". The "W" inspection mark utilized by Oliver Winchester is stamped on the bottom of the lower tang behind the lever latch. The barrel/magazine and bolt are blued, the hammer, lever and trigger are color casehardened, and the receiver and buttplate have the natural brass finish. The straight grain American walnut stock has the varnished, piano finish found on early Henry rifles. Although the Henry rifle was the most advanced rifle manufactured during the Civil War, Oliver Winchester had limited success marketing the rifle to the Ordnance Department. However, the Henry rifle was favorably received by Federal soldiers who appreciated the firepower offered by the 15-shot, lever-action, repeating rifle. The Henry rifle was especially popular with soldiers from Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky who purchased many Henry rifles from New Haven Arms Co., dealers located in Illinois,, Kentucky and Ohio. By the end of the war significant numbers of Federal regiments were partially armed with privately purchased Henry rifles. Experts believe that most of the regular production Henry rifles manufactured between the start of Henry rifle production by the New Haven Arms Co., in April 1862 and the end of the Civil War in April 1865 were purchased by individual soldiers who were willing to pay for the firepower offered by the Henry rifle.

Class: Antique

Very fine. This rifle is all original and remains in outstanding condition for a Civil War production Henry rifle. The barrel and magazine retain at least 60% of the original blue finish. There is a plum-brown patina on the sides of the magazine and light wear on the edges of the barrel. The protected areas of the barrel and magazine retain significant amounts of bright blue finish. The New Haven Arms Co., legend and serial number are sharp. The folding leaf rear sight is original to the rifle with crisp markings and shows traces of fire blue finish in protected areas. Significant amounts of blue remain on protected areas of the bolt. The hammer, trigger and lever retain at least half of the original muted case colors overall with silvering on contact points and some scattered age spotting. The distinctive brass receiver and buttplate are in very fine-excellent condition with a handsome, untouched, patina. The side plate joints are perfect and there is no indication that the side plates have ever been removed from the rifle. The receiver shows only a few very insignificant handling marks. The upper buttplate screw has rusted in place and there are some rust stains on the adjoining areas of the buttplate heel. The balance of the buttplate remains in the same very fine condition as the receiver. With the exception of the upper buttpla
